STORRINGTON COMMUNITY ON SHOW 2108. TIME TO TAKE PART! There are many benefits to being a member of a local community group, such as making new friends, learning new skills, having fun, feeling useful or even getting exercise and enjoying the fresh air. Storrington has a great deal to offer for all its residents, whether young or old, new to the area or simply looking for a new challenge. Its website www. storrington.org offers a wealth of information and contacts for every aspect of its community. Many local voluntary groups are now finding it increasingly hard to find new recruits to maintain their activities, be they social, environmental or of a service nature. This year the Community Partnership in Storrington is planning a bigger and better show on Saturday 12th May at the Chanctonbury Leisure Centre in Spierbridge Road to showcase the wide range of activities and opportunities existing in the voluntary organisations, and to raise the profile of volunteering, along with the benefits it can bring. Louise Hayton, Trustee of the Community Partnership, said, “Friendships, social activities, exercise and the satisfaction of helping others can all be found in joining a local voluntary group.” One such group is the Storrington Area Help Scheme. Originally founded in 1973 by the Reverend John Lambourne, curate of Sullington and Storrington, he was dicussing with a friend the possibility of setting up a scheme to help people in need, offering help with hospital and other medical appointments, shopping for the elderly and babysitting in emergencies. White cards were printed with a large printed red H on them, which could be put in the window of a house if someone needed help. Arrangements were made with the milkman, the postman and the paper boys to look out for these cards, and if they saw one in the window to contact the group, an d they would send someone round to assess the situation and find someone to help from their list of volunteers. The Scheme now concentrates on pre-arranged medical appointments at hospitals and clinics, and is run from an office in Trinity Church in Storrington, manned Monday - Friday 9.00 to 12.00 - 01903 742124. Generally the driver waits for the client to complete their appointment, and returns them back home. Mileage is paid at the standard rate to volunteer drivers, and a contribution is made by the client. Volunteers are currently needed in the Storrington, West Chiltington and Ashington areas. If you want to know more, or your group would be interested in taking part, then contact David on 01903 746101.

Kellie! Hello readers I just figured for my first piece, I’d do a bit about myself. Anyway my name is Kellie and I’m the newest reporter for Village Living. I will be covering things that young people can do in the wonderful area of West Sussex as I myself am only 20, soon to be 21. My family has two black cats, one named Milly who is my baby and one named Shadow, both of the cats are black rescue cats and have very different personalities. Milly is very laid back and always has to be close to me, in fact whilst I’m typing this she is on the chair next to me. Shadow on the other hand is a bit mischievous and cheeky boy, however he can be very sweet when he wants to be. Other than the cats I have 11 tropical fish. Apart from my animals I live with my parents and little brother Kieran, I also have 4 older sisters and we are all very close. If I’m not writing or doing some other creative thing you can find me volunteering in the SOLD charity shop in Shoreham, or the Cancer Research also in Shoreham. I enjoy socialising, being active and making things like candles. Apart from writing one of my other passions is gaming, my favourite game to play right now is Overwatch, I also love anime and manga. As a keen animal lover I have done some work with the RSPCA, as before we moved that’s where you could find me. I also used to do horse riding at weekends but due to it being a very expensive hobby I decided to only do it away on holiday. We go to lots of fantastic and amazing places on holiday, one of my dreams is to go to America one day. I am dyslexic so thank goodness for spellcheck and my mum! I have autism along with a few other disorders which I’m coping with, Milly has taken it upon herself to be my furry therapist. Any feedback or things you would like me to write about, would be most welcome. See you in the next issue.

agoodnight’ssleep In 2017 we at Popsicle Interiors launched a crowdfunding campaign raising money which would be used to provide children with spaces inside their home that they could feel ‘safe’ in. With the donations we gave some to the charity Shelter and with what was left we wanted to create a room for a child in the local community. So, we launched an online appeal. From the appeal we chose a family in Sussex who would benefit from the monies raised. This family had never had a good night’s sleep – at the time when I met them the whole family were trying to sleep together in the front room. Charlie their eldest son had been recently diagnosed with autism and this was having an affect on the whole family so him having a bedroom he felt comfortable would make the World of difference to all of them. We spoke with Charlie about what he wanted from his bedroom and then did our own independent research about what makes a good room for a child diagnosed with autism and managed to come up with a plan that would work. We were very happy with the finished room, particularly because we managed to get in most of what was on Charlie’s want list – superwings, bunkbeds and a ‘den’!

Being in a bunkbed can be tricky in providing somewhere to put your ‘pile of important stuff’ so we gave Charlie this cloud shelf to put his new superwings collection, his new groclock (totally recommend this if you have children that don’t want to sleep) and his new bedroom sign so we all know whose room it really is!

Charlie had asked for a den so he could spend some time in it playing and reading with his cousins. We decided that a teepee would be a great piece for Charlie’s room and provide the den that he desired. We found this large navy blue and white one online at Fun With Mum. The finished room is a purposeful simple design filled with clean lines and items that Charlie particularly wanted in his room. We have created areas for sleeping, getting dressed and for play. These are very important pointers when designing a room for a child, particularly one with autism. The end result for the family went above and beyond what we ever could have imagined possible from just the redesign of one little boys bedroom. A week after the room had been completed we wrote to them for some feedback and here is what the mum had to say: “Huge thank you for your kind generosity in creating a room for Charlie. He & Amelie absolutely love it, they are now actually excited to go to bed and have actually been sleeping through the night, which is huge. I can’t remember the last time that happened! You have transformed all our lives and I honestly can’t thank you enough. You’re amazing.” And thank you Village Living readers for donating to our crowdfunder and enabling us to give one family in Sussex a good nights sleep!

The Mellor Practice is expanding! We are opening our second office over the next few weeks – 31 Chapel Road Worthing BN11 1EG. This is in addition to our existing premises just outside Arundel. For some time I’ve wanted us to be more visible and we are now right in the heart of Worthing. It’s important to us that we can serve the local community, right on their doorstep. We continue to offer professional, unhurried, face to face Independent Financial Advice. With well over 120 years combined experience, our qualified advisers – male and female – can help you answer the following questions – and more… l l

I’ve just inherited a capital sum – how should I invest it? I’m retiring in the next few years – can you look at my existing pensions? I’m fed up with poor Cash ISA returns – are there low risk alternatives offering potentially better returns? I’m aware that my family needs life assurance/critical illness protection – can you help? I’m concerned that I may need long term care – how is it best funded? I’ve heard about Equity Release – is it for me?

We offer the first 45 minute consultation at our expense, either in our comfortable offices in Worthing or Arundel. This first meeting is an informal discussion to find out more about you, your aims and objectives and your attitude to risk. All our fees are transparent and will be discussed with you prior to producing a comprehensive report with recommendations if you decide to proceed. Please telephone Hilary Peyman on 01903 882007 to book your initial consultation. We look forward to being of service! Laurie Mellor BSc(Hons) DipFA MLIBF, Managing Director

22 • STEYNING FESTIVAL

LINE UP, LINE UP, FOR THE

STEYNING FESTIVAL 2018! 26th May – 9th June The line up for the 2018 Steyning Festival has just been announced and very exciting it is. Amongst the headline acts are Barry Cryer and Colin Sell, staples of I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, legendary jazz bassist Herbie Flowers, Peep Show’s Robert Webb, and Soul II Soul with Jazzie B. Other big names include Baroness Floella Benjamin, Sir Malcolm Rifkind, children’s author Julia Donaldson, and Simon Nye, responsible for many successful TV shows, most recently The Durrells. The 16 day Festival with a theme of Revolution starts on Saturday 26 May. The mix of music, drama, dance, art, poetry, literature, talks, walks, community events and craft activities, has something for all ages, whether a fun day, a sing-along to Bugsy Malone, a Young Dancer of the Year competition, or the naughty and satirical Bounder and Cad, who have performed at 10, Downing Street. Live Lounge, the popular music event, celebrates its tenth anniversary, there’s a wine and beer festival, and if you’re young and active there’s A Breakin’ Convention with graffiti and streetfunk. In contrast there’s dreamy English folk music from the South Downs Trio, a pirate adventure, Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, explorations of Gluck and Byron, you can co-create your own Steyning Revolution Bag, Sir Anthony Seldon asks how artificial intelligence is changing education and our world, Professor Andrew Coates looks for life on Mars, award-winning journalist John Pilkington ponders what next for Russia and Europe, consultant radiologist Malcolm Johnston explores the science of music, there’s a jamming session for massed ukuleles, and a specially commissioned piece by two dancers

from Ballet Rambert. And for literary buffs there’s a wealth of writing talent, including Salley Vickers, Sarah Dunant, Amanda Craig and Sarah Gristwood. Simon Brett and Elly Griffiths are the judges at a Short Stories Awards Dinner, and Mark Billingham, Sarah Hilary, Erin Kelly and William Shaw make up an excellent crime writers’ panel. The Steyning Festival has something to whet every appetite. Tickets can be booked from 20th April on www.steyningfestival.co.uk
