6 • STEYNING FESTIVAL
STEYNING FESTIVAL 2018! 26th May – 9th June Roll up, roll up, for the Steyning Festival! The Steyning Festival happens every two years and it starts on Saturday 26th May, with booking opening on Friday 20th April. It is a vibrant mix of music, dance, theatre, talks, walks, and community events. It is friendly, warm, and stimulating and has treats in store for everyone who comes. Amongst the big names are Barry Cryer, Robert Webb, John Torode of Masterchef, Herbie Flowers, Julia Donaldson, Sir Malcolm Rifkin, Dame Floella Benjamin, and Simon Nye, author of the popular The Durrells, the latest series of which has just hit our screens. There are many events designed with children in mind, almost 20 of them. There are opportunities to meet the Gruffalo – and its creator - but there’s also a Pirate Adventure and a chance to do your own art work in a giant mural under the expert guidance of children’s author and illustrator, Nick Sharratt. The adults, incidentally, can share breakfast with Julia Donaldson in the Big Top and discover why she is so passionate about providing books for children with hearing difficulties. And talking of the Big Top, youngsters can learn or improve their circus skills! For music lovers one of the highlights must surely be a concert featuring Leonard Bernstein’s setting of the Chichester Psalms and a newly commissioned work by Malcolm Singer. And with singers in mind, you can learn all about the science of music in an entertaining and copiously illustrated talk by consultant radiologist and musician, Malcolm Johnston. If you prefer jazz or folk music that’s on offer too. And for the young at heart there’s a Soul II Soul DJ set with Grammy award-winning Jazzie B, who has worked with some

of the biggest names in the contemporary music scene. You could try your hand at singing along with Bugsy Malone, take part in the Young Dancer of the Year event, find out about winning the carbon war in the Green Revolution, hear about the legacy of the First World War poets, enjoy the Steyning Live Lounge 10th anniversary gig, or be part of A Breakin’ Convention which includes master- classes on the art of hip-hop and streetfunk. If all that’s too active for you, you could take a sedate stroll to enjoy the Wiston Wonders, or you could sink a pint or two as the rag bag collective of musicians, wordsmiths, artists and vintage and classic car fans, known as the Raz Up, returns for another year. Tickets available from the Steyning Bookshop or online at www.steyningfestival.co.uk – have a look online, you will be sure to find something of interest to you and your family this Festival!

8 • STEYNING FESTIVAL
FOLK AT THE FESTIVAL
Annie Edson Taylor was the first person to survive the ordeal of going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. It’s the stuff of legends and the raw material for folk songs. Kirsty Merryn, who appears at the Steyning Festival this year, doesn’t disappoint. Kirsty, and Norfolk-based Alden, Patterson and Dashwood, are two young acts appearing in the Big Top in the folk evening on Monday 4 June as part of the 16 day Steyning Festival, which opens on 26 May and runs until 9 June. Both acts have featured on the BBC Radio 2 Folk Show. Alden, Patterson and Dashwood weave rich harmonies around beautifully written songs and melodies, using fiddle, dobro, guitar and mandolin. Their album, Call Me Home, has received much acclaim both here and abroad and they are in great demand. Their appearance in Steyning is part of a national tour. Kirsty Merryn has produced a highly-acclaimed debut album, She & I, which takes the stories of inspirational women in history, such as Annie Taylor
and Emma Hamilton, and turns them into exciting music anchored in the folk tradition. It has received extensive airplay since its release, reached the top three of the folk charts, and continues to receive glowing reviews in the national press. Merryn’s distinctive sound combines emphatic piano, sharply observed lyrics, panache, elegance, and the crystalclear delivery of assured and beautiful vocals. The folk scene in Sussex is flourishing, with clubs in Brighton and Lewes and in most of the smaller towns and villages. Mick Bullen, responsible for bringing the two acts to the Big Top, runs a monthly song and music session in Partridge Green. ‘The younger generation shows a huge interest in folk music in all its guises,’ says Mick, ‘and the performers at the Steyning Festival Folk Evening are good examples of young musicians putting their own slant on it. It’s going to be an evening of traditional and contemporary songs performed with skill and passion, featuring stories of love, sorrow, hope and inspiration.’

PARTRIDGE GREEN OPEN GARDENS 2018 Saturday & Sunday 16th & 17th June 11am-5pm All in aid of various charities This ever popular village event is in its 7th year and has so far raised over £12,000 for various charities. We are so excited about our 22 gardens which are opening this year, 6 of them are new! Each garden will have a charity box so any donations will be gratefully received. It is a chance to see the beautiful designs, compact plots, hidden jewels and favourites from last year. Many of them will be serving refreshments and lovely homemade treats. The Scarecrow trail is now a big part of the Village walkabout weekend as you go from garden to garden. The leaflets with all the information will be available on the day from Bluebells Nursery situated next to Jolesfield Primary School, Littleworth Lane RH13 8JE. Copies will also be in the Village shops and will be delivered to all houses in the Partridge Green and Dial post Newsletter. The No.17 Southdown bus covers most of the route. Parking is available behind the village hall, and there are plenty of comfort stops along the way.
Kellie!
Hello readers Kellie back again in this issue of the Village Living I will be talking about an event called the Blue Camel club. The event is a disco held at the Old market in Brighton. It is a night for people with learning disabilities and their friends with a range of DJs and live music. Tickets for this event would cost you £5 and an extra £1 for carers. Also the event runs from 7pm to 10pm. If it gets too much you can always go and relax in the bar. The event is held about every 4 months and is always a lot of fun. I go with my friends from SOLD and we all have a great time getting the bus together to the event and letting our hair down there, even the staff go and enjoy it. This is a picture taken of me and my boyfriend Jack at the December one. As they have photographers there taking pictures. You can also see some of my friends in the background. You never know what music will be played but you can guarantee a good time, who knows you might even find a bit of romance like my friends have done in the past. The Blue Camel will always be special to me as last September at the end of the night when we were on some of the last songs Jack made me the happiest girl in the world and proposed to me. See you in the next issue.

Quirky Quintessential Englishness at its Best!
The Floral Fringe Fair 2018 The Floral Fringe Fair 2018 is taking place on the weekend of June 2nd and 3rd at Knepp Castle, Shipley, Nr Horsham, West Sx RH13 8LJ from 10.30 am to 5pm both days. The fair is quirky and eclectic. It has a wildlife theme but also a vintage twist. The fair specialises in quality stalls from Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Hampshire and stallholders who have actually made what they sell and so are able to talk with first hand knowledge and passion about their product. Also, vintage stalls selling items made by craftspeople from the past.

FLORAL BACK IN FRINGE TIME • 15
E
ntry is £7.50 per person, £2.00 for children under 14 and children under 4 free. If arriving in a classic or vintage pre-1975 vehicle entry is £6.50 each for the first two occupants. Classic and vintage vehicles will have a specially al-located parking area. If in such a vehicle, dressing in appropriate fashion is especially encouraged…. or even if not arriving in a classic car, dressing in style is welcome. This year we have also introduced a Steampunk twist. This is a fascinating genre that echoes with our recycle, re-love ethos and general eccentric theme! Why not bring your retro picnic basket and rug and buy all the ingredients for your picnic from the numerous street food stalls at the fair. There are many picnic spots by the beautiful lake. Or eat in our fabulous pop-up tearoom. The fair is becoming something of a foodies favourite. Well-behaved dogs on leads positively welcomed. There are free-roaming cattle, sheep, ponies, geese and deer which may have young, so leads are essential at all times. We saw some gorgeous pooches come to the fair last year. We have thought of them with a several stalls selling delicious doggy treats for good dogs, plus handmade collars and leads. Knepp Castle is the subject of an unusual and nationally important re-wilding project and there will be the chance to learn more about this at the fair. Wildlife safaris have recently been launched on the estate and there is a well-equipped luxury campsite. Find out more and also directions to the fair at www.kneppestate.co.uk The overall theme of the fair is our native wildlife and how to encourage it into the garden, but the fair has grown and
developed into much more than that. It is about everything that is quintessentially English and quirky, about cele-brating the outdoors, gardens and gardening. About talented craftspeople and artists of today as well as the craftspeople of a bygone era, represented by vintage stalls, classic cars. Over 130 stalls including specialist nurseries and wildlife information stalls are expected! Words used by visitors to describe our fair last year were ‘Unique, Eclectic, Quirky, Quality, Informative and Friendly’.There will be music from local musicians, dancing and singing. The beautiful private gardens at Knepp Castle, designed by Georgia Langton, will be open specially during the fair. Many Farmer’s Market Food stalls will be selling a wide range of carefully chosen food to suit everyone and most dietary requirements have been mindfully taken into consideration. There will be plenty of places to sit…a tea tent, a local ale tent also serving Pimms, gourmet fishfinger sandwiches with nori batter, a barbecue, freshly baked wood-fired oven pizzas, cooked as you wait vegan galeites, quiches, pies, cheeses, breads and smoked meat. Coffee, teas, gin cocktails, a selection of cakes, ice-cream, chocolate, marshmallows, fudge and many interesting food stalls from which to buy a picnic to eat by the beautiful lake. All of our stallholders are independent, small busi-nesses and not many of them have card machine facilities so please remember to bring lots of cash to the fair. Courgette Parmigiana
RECIPE • 2121
This is a stunning dish, classic Italian, family-style dish that foolishly I haven’t made for an absolute age. It was given to me by an old photographer friend called Sandro, whilst we were driving home from a photo-shoot in Paris. I got around to talking about cooking and how difficult it was sometimes to create different and tasty meat-free dishes for The Viking, when Sandro suggested I try a dish which his family have made for years and which is served as either a side dish or a main dish depending on who’s at the table… it’s essentially a courgette lasagne, using crispy coated slices of courgette as the pasta. It’s not a fast make… so only make this when you’ve got a long afternoon to relax in your kitchen… although you can freeze it perfectly well. You need time to make a good tomato sauce (something never to take lightly) and then it’s a process of flouring the courgette slices, shallow frying them and then layering the dish. Well worth the effort.
For the sauce
Saute the onions in butter and olive oil and let them sweat for a long while (about
Start with the sauce because it needs at least 3 hours cooking time
10mins on a low heat) and halfway through add the crushed garlic, then add a
• 2 medium onions – finely chopped • 3 tins of good quality chopped Italian tomatoes (fresh is just as good but you need to peel and frankly who can be bothered?) • 3 cloves garlic – crushed • a glass of white wine • 2 tablespoons ketchup • 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar • fresh rosemary and thyme
and vinegar and I like to throw in an extra teaspoon of sugar, but this is to your own
hearty glug of white wine and let is reduce, next add the tomatoes, herbs, ketchup taste Then let is simmer on a very low heat for as long as you’ve got… 2 hours min. Meanwhile… slice the courgettes, though not too thinly… I usually get 5 slices from each courgette. Prepare the flour and egg/mil mix in bowls and when you’re ready dip the courgette into the egg/milk, then the flour and shake off any excess. In a pan, heat the oil…enough so that you’re shallow frying and fry 3 slices at a time… don’t be tempted to overcrowd the pan as they wont turn golden and they’ll go soggy. – set aside on paper to drain.
Courgette Parmigiana • 3 large courgettes • plain flour • salt and pepper • 1 large free-range egg beaten with a little milk • 3 large balls fresh mozzarella •2 00g Parmigiano Reggiano – finely grated
Once you’ve fried up all your courgettes you should be ready to layer your pie. I try and go for 3 layers of each. Start with a layer of courgettes, then add tomatoes, followed by 1 of the balls of mozzarella which you need to tear up and place onto the layers and a large handful of grated parmesan… add salt and pepper each layer and continue till it’s all gone. Top with more parmesan. 30 mins in a medium oven and you have a glorious, golden, molten dish. Eat and of course, enjoy!

WEST SUSSEX HEATING Boiler Installation Specialists, happily growing our small family run business in and around the West Sussex area we love.
With nearly 20 years experience working in the industry and having run his own successful plumbing & heating company for 16 years of that time, West Sussex Heating’s Managing Director & Lead Engineer, Jon, really knows his stuff. Jon is originally from the Shoreham area and began sub-contracting boiler installations for British Gas back in the early days and as the boiler installation work greatly increased, so did the specialised skill set born from installing various different makes of boiler, in many situations on a daily basis. Today we install up to 25 boilers a month for this renowned company, making us vastly experienced and exceptionally good at what we do, and in 2013 we formed our own specialist heating company, which solely focuses on boiler replacement and central heating installation for our own local customers. For every new boiler we install, we’re dedicated to quality workmanship and providing an exceptional service, at an affordable price. Who we are... We are West Sussex Heating Ltd, A local, family run business, fully insured & ‘Gas Safe’ registered. What we do... We’re experts at installing brand new boilers and central heating systems. With our Managing Director having worked with British Gas for many years, we bring the
skills, experience and standards of this renowned company to every project, just without the associated price tag. Why we do it... In life, a comfortable and functional home is a necessity. We let you achieve this with our new boiler installations, providing you with ongoing warmth throughout the year. Whether you want a cosy night in during the deep mid winter, need a long, relaxing shower, or whilst ploughing through the dishes after a fun dinner party with friends, a high-quality boiler is absolutely essential. How we work... When it comes to your home, we know you expect the very best and that’s why we work so hard to provide the best service, which sees new boilers installed to the very highest standards. We also provide our customers with a fixed-price quote at the outset of the work, so you’ll never have to pay any hidden costs, or be liable for any extras. Where we work... We’re based in Steyning, West Sussex and we’re pleased to serve customers throughout the county and all surrounding areas. We have over 19 years’ experience in the trade, meaning you’re guaranteed the highest standard of workmanship, along with excellent customer service and aftercare... We’re not happy unless you are.
