June saw the exciting opening of a brand new Beauty Salon on Steyning High Street – The Boo-ti Salon. Boo-ti have moved in to the old Hut Stuff premises at the bottom end of the High Street, and you wouldn’t believe the transformation inside. Stylishly decorated in fresh clean whites and greens, the salon has a quality and relaxed feel as soon as you step through the door. Proprietor Helen Harwood has over 20 years experience working within a salon environment, and previously owned and ran a large award winning salon in Cuckfield. Some of her original clients are still with her today. Helen says: “Living locally, it was always my wish to open a salon in Steyning. The town is vibrant, fun, and has a great sense of community. I was delighted when the current Boo-ti premises became available, and gave me the opportunity I had been waiting for. My aim is to provide top quality treatments in a friendly, comfortable environment. My passion lies in facials. Having worked with and been trained in all of the top product ranges in the past, I now use Guinot products out of choice. I’ve worked with the range now for nearly ten years – I am always amazed at the fantastic results achieved from the Hydradermie2 facials, and the positive feedback from my clients. I’m really excited about this new venture, and have had so much positive feedback already. I can’t wait to welcome new clients into my salon!”

12 • KAREN BACK INBURGE TIME

How to be Happy

A couple of years ago my daughter told me of a post she’d seen on Facebook; it was a New Year’s resolution. A company was suggesting that for 30 days people took a photo of something that made them smile and posted it to their page. I immediately liked the idea, and decided to take the photos, but being a bit fearful of Facebook and publicity, instead of posting them on this strangers’ page, I would make my own album. That decision changed my life. It was New Year, my family were around me, it was a time of fresh beginnings so finding things that made me smile was easy. I merrily snapped the children playing, the meals we were enjoying and the time spent with friends. Then the festive period drew to a close, the cold and wet dragged on and I found I had to actively look for things to photograph. I was determined to do this each day but it wasn’t always easy. I realized that the event or object didn’t have to be momentous. Looking back I can see that I photographed everything from a warm bubble bath to the receipt for my completed tax return (well, that was a great moment!). There was lunch with a friend, a visit to the Farmers’ market, a good book I finished. As the days went on I found that hunting for the good things, the simple pleasures, and the small achievements, meant that I was always looking for the best in each day. I was looking for the upside in life. I became happier. When you start purposefully looking for things that make you happy, like magic, you will start feeling happier. I would suggest that you slow down today and look around. Start to savour the little things that give you pleasure and they will also give you joy. When we rush through our day we can overlook moments that comfort us, and it is the simple things in life that be the most rewarding – if we let them. There have been many surveys on what people enjoy most, what they like to spend time doing, what gives them the greatest pleasure. Apparently eating fish and chips by the sea comes high on the list. Most people would agree that to sit and watch a sunset, read a good book or laugh with friends makes them happy. What would be on your list? Do you have a list? It can be fun to jot down all the things that make you feel good. You may remember things you haven’t done for a while, things you’ve been just too busy to fit into your hectic life. I wonder how many you could write down before you had to really think. If you want to be happy, here are two challenges this month. Write a list of the things that make you happy now and think about fitting a few of them into the next month. Secondly, as you go about your day, look for one thing that brings a smile to your face. Happy snapping. July 2015 • Village Living

15 • HANDSOME HOUNDS

HANDSOME HOUNDS Sharon – owner of Handsome Hounds, has had a successful grooming salon in Upper Beeding for over 10 years, City and Guild qualified, and well on her way to completing the highest qualification in the profession – the Guild of Master Groomers. Along the way of winning many awards however the salon was becoming a little run down and was in very much need of a revamp. So whilst the new shop-fit was being done, Sharon had an idea, she wanted to reach the customers that didn’t need a professional groomer. Sharon had a vision, the Self Service Salon – as it had never been done in this part of the country. So January this year Sharon started to plan her vision. It would save people washing their dogs in the bath at home, saving them from back ache and mess, or the “dreaded by the dog” – cold water hose down in the garden! She wanted some way for the customer to bath their dog with ease and convenience, and a fraction of the cost of a groomer. Sharon thought about all the times she’d had to take her dogs Milo and Poppy back to the salon after them rolling in something disgusting and getting messy out on walks. As a professional groomer herself, knowing what makes the bathing and pampering easier, she wanted to give her customers the use of equipment from her trade that would make things as easy for them! Things like :- 24/7 use (people walk their pets all times of day and night!) This is done via a key pad entry system, just a phone call to retrieve the code and you’re in! A ramp up to the waist high baths and tables, so no more bending and lifting! A high velocity dryer as used by professional groomers, which also removes shedding coat. Pro shampoo’s, stand dryers, towels, brushes, safety equipment and aprons, all included and at the customer disposal! And so the vision was born and Sharon and all her lovely staff are pleased to announce the launch of Handsome Hounds Self Service Salon…

Welcome to, Handsome Hounds.

19 • WAGGING TAILS

WAGGING TAILS W

agging Tails (WT) home boarding service provides dog owners with a kinder, more humane alternative to kennels. 50 weeks of the year we treat our four legged friends as members of the family – we pet them, we cuddle them, we love them, we spoil them – it therefore makes no sense at all when we human folks jet off for two weeks of luxury lifestyle to stick our pampered pooch in what amounts to little more than a jail cell, with maybe an hours yard exercise. The BN post code area of WT is run by Karey with added support from dogs Shearer and Scamp and Karey’s partner Jon. Using carefully selected and vetted carers who are home all day, they offer real home from home care. WT guarantee only one family’s dogs holiday with a carer at any one time, ensuring dogs get the same care and attention as they do at home. All carers are insured and licensed in accordance with the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963, in homes and gardens that are dog friendly, safe and secure. Owners and dogs get to check out Fido’s proposed holiday home beforehand in a ‘sniffing out’ meeting. Owners can then relax leaving their beloved canine friends behind, knowing they can contact the carer at any time to double check all is OK. As an added extra, at the end of the holiday, WT also provide a wee holiday report and photos so the family can see what their dog has been up to. For any subsequent bookings the company then aims to place the dog with the same carers – familiarity and peace of mind for owners and dogs! If you are interested in the services or think you have the qualities to become a WT carer and enjoy the company of a doggie guest in your own home contact Karey on 07869 470 570/01323 651 517, email: bn@waggingtailsuk.co.uk See: http://www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/home-dogboarding-sussex ... so WT provides the option of real home from home care. It is a home boarding service with added exclusive benefits. Owners’ dogs stay in the home of carefully selected and vetted carers who are home all day. How long in the area … do you have a dog of your own … The company was launched in Surrey in Hampshire in 2007. Rapid growth and the number of enquiries coming in from further and further afield lead to the realisation that there was a national demand for the service. However it was realised that an essential element of the growth in Surrey and Hampshire had been the local knowledge and the close, supportive relationship the owners had been able to provide for carers, owners and council and other officials. It was therefore decided to open the business up to franchise based on post code areas. In 2010 the first franchise was opened in the Oxford area. There are now

18 franchises up and running right across the country. The BN post code area branch is run by Karey and her dog Shearer, with additional support from Karey’s partner Jon . Shearer is a fifteen and a half year old jack Russell/patterdale cross who joined Karey as a puppy and has been with her through lifes ups and downs including a spell living in New Zealand where he loved running on the beaches barking at the odd seal. He is now very much part of the company and takes an active role in ‘interviewing’ and ‘sampling’ prospective and recruited carers. The team are soon to be joined by Bailey, a four month old pedenco cross, who is coming from Spain and whom Karey and Jon are adopting via the charity Give a Dog a Home. Karey, a life time dog lover, was working as a teacher of the deaf when she got involved with WT after meeting some of the other franchisees at the head quarters of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf (WT nominated charity) where she was training as a speaker. She thought the whole concept of WT was absolutely brilliant and, as a dog owner who had frequently spent hours and hours scouring web pages and newspapers looking for suitable carers whilst she went on holiday, knew that there was indeed a need in the BN postal code area. So after investigating a bit further she decided to take the plunge and the BN arm of WT was launched in September 2014. This covers Brighton and Hove, Lewes, Eastbourne, Worthing, Arundel and all the surrounding areas. How is the business expanding Advertising through the national website (http://www. waggingtailsuk.co.uk/home-dog-boarding-sussex) local press and attending local fairs and fetes, the initial focus was on the far west side of the area and then on the east. Several carers have now been recruited in those areas and so far the BN branch have provided happy holiday homes for a wide range of woofs from all over east and West Sussex, a large proportion of whom have been so delighted with the service they have returned for a second, third or in some cases even a fourth (or fifth!) stay. The branch is now getting an increasing number of calls from the Brighton and Hove area and so are looking to recruit more carers in the city. So if you are an experienced dog owner, love the company of woofs, are home all day and have a safe and secure home and garden in which you would like to welcome canine friends for their holidays Karey would love to hear from you. Owners provide the food, bedding and leads. You get to enjoy the company a lovely dog AND receive payment for doing so – it’s a no brainer! Contact Karey on: 01323 651517 or 07869 470570, email bn@waggingtailsuk.co.uk or visit our website at http://www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/homedog-boarding-sussex

Wicker’s Gymnastic Club At Wickers Gymnastics Club play and fun are an essential part of all the children’s gymnastics experience. At Wickers the children’s experience of gymnastics brings many rewards, children learn how their bodies move how to socialise with other children & enjoy the thrill of achieving new skills. There’s nothing children of all ages like better than tumbling around on soft mats, bouncing on the trampoline, swinging on the bars and balancing on the beam. We offer all of this in a very safe environment.

We offer an extensive programme of preschool gymnastics, junior gymnastics, competitive gymnastics, and adult gymnastics. Classes take place throughout the week and at the weekend. Gymnasts also follow the British Gymnastics badge scheme. We can also host your child’s birthday party! For more information visit our website – www.wickersgymnastics.co.uk or call on 01903 752503

At Wickers Gymnastics Club children build strength, develop coordination, learn social skills, make new friends, develop valuable listening skills and the ability to follow verbal instruction, all whilst having great fun. Wickers Gymnastics Club has been running for over 25 years and recently expanded and has a dedicated gymnastics facility in the Adur District. The Club holds the prestigious Gymmark/ClubMark accreditation from British Gymnastics, which recognises the club as ‘safe, effective and child friendly’.
