URGENT PARKING ACTION AT SOUTHWATER Horsham District Council has taken urgent action to deal with inconsiderate drivers who park along Cripplegate Lane that runs at the side of Southwater Country Park. A temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) authorised by West Sussex County Council was put in place on Friday (19 August 2016) which will enable council officers to enforce on-street parking restrictions along the lane and therefore ease congestion and improve access for local residents. The action has been necessary following a peak in visitors to the popular Southwater Country Park and the new Dinosaur Island Play Area over the past few weeks. When the Dinosaur Island was created in 2015, the council undertook works to extend the main car park serving the Country Park to cater for increased demand. The council will be applying to West Sussex County Council for a permanent Traffic Regulation Order, whilst the temporary order is in place, to cover the season from April through to October each year. The council’s request for the order will be subject to normal consultation. If the TRO is approved, arrangements will made for the necessary signs and road markings to be provided and final notices will be advertised in a local paper stating when the Order will come into effect. Councillor Jonathan Chowen, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said: We are of course very pleased that the Southwater Country Park and the Dinosaur Island Play Area is as popular as it is, drawing in visitors from accross the district. We did take measures to increase car parking capacity when improvements had been made to the Country Park last year, but with the great weather it has been a very popular destination over the school summer holidays. However, its popularity cannot be at the expense of the quality of life and safety of local residents, which is why we had to look for some immediate solutions. I am confident that the additional parking and enforcement actions that have been put in place will provide immediate relief for local residents. We will of course continue to monitor the situation closely. Councillor Claire Vickers, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, said: The situation for residents along Cripplegate Lane has been very difficult for the past few weeks and I would like to thank local residents for their patience during this difficult time. We have put in place a number of temporary measures to deal with the situation urgently whilst we seek a longer and more permanent solution to the problem.

BRIGHTON SCIENCE BACKFESTIVAL IN TIME • 9

Brighton Science Festival September Programme Brighton Science Festival has been facilitating science in the Sussex area and putting on events since 2005. It aims to build a spirit of discovery in people of all ages, to promote science and curiosity, to bring the best of the world’s science to Brighton (and the best of Brighton’s science to the world).

B

righton Science Festival kicks off the new September programme with a triple bill of scintillating science, guaranteed to enthuse and enthral curious people of all ages.

Richard Robinson opens the Book of Beasts and looks at the parallels between the world of work and the wonders of nature. You will recognise many of these creatures – and you are at least one of them yourself.

Big Science Saturday – 17th September

Saturday 17th September, 7pm – 9.30pm Sallis Benney Theatre, Brighton £6 / £3 – Tickets available from www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2591674

A day of talks and discussions from an incredible array of scientists and experts – covering the entirety of human knowledge (well, almost) in just six hours. From the complete history of the universe (delivered at a billion years per minute) to how stupidity helps businesses get things done (in the short term, at least), via such thorny topics as why renewable power is inevitable, what the ‘obesity crisis’ actually is, and why legs are a greatly underrated invention, expect a non-stop cavalcade of scintillating science guaranteed to get you thinking, questioning, learning and laughing. Saturday 17th September, 10.30am – 5.30pm Sallis Benney Theatre, Brighton, £7 / £5 – Tickets available from www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2591569

Ugly Animals – 17th September A two-headed beast of a show with illustrated talks from Simon Watt and Richard Robinson. Would the WWF get as many donations if its logo was a blobfish rather than a panda? Why should the most attractive animals get all the praise? Simon Watt fights the cause of some of the planet’s less photogenic species. Is your boss a hammerhead shark? Or more like an assassin bug?

Take Nobody’s Word for It – 18th September Discover the art of arguing without being cross and disagreeing without being disagreeable. Debating can be both boring and aggressive – we’re going to make it fun. Join in with a series of talks and games designed to polish your debating skills. All this is accompanied by some very special guests, including Rob Eastaway’s Maths on the Go – games to make even the longest car journey bearable, Jillian Scudder taking on all comers in the physics quiz show Astroquizzical, and Dominic Johnson telling us how God is Watching You – whether you like it or not. To round things off, Sense About Science cover how to ask for evidence, and make sure something’s true before jumping to conclusions – politicians take note! Sunday 18th September, 10.30am – 5.30pm Sallis Benney Theatre, Brighton Entry by donation www.BrightonScience.com www.facebook.com/BrightonScience @BrightonScience

Spring Cleaning

MISS MOP • 11

Today, the term ‘spring cleaning’ means any process that involves a deep clean of a house or room but whether it’s a good freshen-up or an act of major de-cluttering, you certainly don’t have to wait until daffodils bloom before donning the rubber gloves.

S

o just who was responsible for creating this widely-adopted and immensely satisfying habit of blitzing the house room by room until it’s shiny, fresh and tidy? It is claimed by some that the beginnings of spring cleaning came from the ancient Jewish practice of thoroughly cleansing the home before the spring-time feast of Passover. Others believe it originated in Iran on March 21 – the day of Now Rouz (Persian New Year). It’s a time for refreshing and reinvigorating life, a process that is relayed in the tradition of khooneh takouni which literally means ‘shaking the house’. The Chinese too stake a claim as they believe spring cleaning in preparation for their New Year brings good fortune. Homes are cleaned from top to bottom at the end of the year to remove any bad luck and misfortune that may have gathered and be lingering ready to continue into the next. In English, the term ‘spring clean’ dates to back to around 1860. Before central heating, people kept their houses shut in winter. Homes were heated with coal, oil and wood and lit with candles, producing a lot of smoke and ash. Spring was a time to open the doors and windows and let out the smell of stale smoke. Nowadays, when you choose to spring clean your house is irrelevant and a post-summer blitz is always a good idea, largely because indoors can often be neglected when outdoor living takes hold.

•W indows and frames will need a good wipe down to remove evidence of summer bugs •C heck your light fittings, particularly if you have lamps with bowls – a guaranteed graveyard for flying insects •G ive upholstery and curtains a vacuum, paying particular attention to the tops of pelmets and blinds • I f you have an open fire, make an appointment to have the chimney swept now. And one you’ve finished all that, don’t forget to clean the barbecue. You don’t want to be grilling your sausages on a charred, mouldy rack come the first signs of sun in April. That would be the kind of “spring” cleaning you could certainly do without! Of course, if you’d prefer not to do all of this yourself contact the professionals at Miss Mop Ltd on 01798 874355 for a free, no-obligation quotation.

Some top tips to freshen your house: • S piders are more active during summer months so you will notice many more cobwebs. Use a feather duster or hoover attachment to do away with them •N ow that the kids are back at school, wipe down kitchen unit cupboards, walls and doors to get rid of sticky icecream marks and greasy fingerprints •Y ou will often notice dead flies and wasps around the edges of carpets and floors, particularly under window sills. Use a hoover attachment to get rid of them along with the layer of dust that is often missed with normal hoovering. And don’t be lazy – pull out the furniture! • P ollen and dust settles everywhere. Give skirtings a wipe down with a damp cloth – you’ll be surprised how dirty they become when doors and windows are open www.villagelivingmagazine.co.uk | tel: 0785 2231512

My Waistline Has Been Hijacked By My Hormones!!! A different topic this month – Hormones the reality!

I

don’t need confirmation to know that many woman who may be reading this – nodding their heads at the same time – will completely understand what I am going on about… Hormones!! Pesky things that they are. It actually doesn’t matter what age you are, because your hormones play a massive part in how your body functions on a daily basis; how it metabolizes, how it holds and stores fat and how your mental wellbeing is subsequently affected. Think of PMS, PMT, fluctuating mood swings, sugar cravings, water retention, ovarian cysts, weight gain, or weight loss, etc… the list goes on! They decide where you are going to lose weight from, put weight on, or just plain have you going up and down like a yoyo on a week-by-week or month-by-month basis; and when you reach the early or actual menopausal stages, they can completely take over, or have such an impact on your body that it’s as though someone has snatched the real you and left an imposter in your place. Ring any bells?? The “pesky” hormones I’m talking about – estrogen and progesterone – are part of the body’s network of glands called the Endocrine system. These glands produce more than fifty different known hormones, which maintain and regulate basic bodily functions. The Endocrine system is actually second only to the nervous system as the controlling system of the body. Clever system and clever bodies!! Stress is also a major contributing factor in how these two hormones affect, not only weight gain and being able to lose weight, but also our mental wellbeing, because stress can “rob” hormones and affect hormonal balance. That’s not to say that what we put in our mouths doesn’t also have a huge impact on our waistlines as well as our other hormones! …For my part, I had always been able to lose weight when I had gone too far towards my “over comfortable” level, and have been lucky enough not to have too many PMT episodes over the years thank goodness. That was until about year and a half ago, when I literally got “hijacked by my hormones”. I know my age played a big part, as did the

years of intermittent stress, but I soooo wasn’t prepared for what happened. It was as though the “hormone” body snatchers had been overnight and left someone else who looked like me in my place. With this “new” body came bizarre emotional turmoil, night sweats and hot flushes during the day (both which I got under control with the herb sage). But what threw me totally, was what happened to my waist and bust line… These “body snatchers” had been kind enough, whilst I was asleep, to pump up both, increasing them by quite a lot – over and beyond my “comfortable” level, consequently turning my body into something I didn’t quite recognise as my own!! Suffice to say that many months on, with my stress levels addressed (working with myself in the same way I invite my clients to work with themsleves), my emotions and hormones now well under control, I am very much back to being “me”. Working with a doctor who specialises in Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy has been life changing, although there is still the “little” problem of my waistline and bust, which are still a work in progress… but as the old saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Russian Layering Lashes A

nother treat from lovely Amy at Little beauty Salon, a treatment I highly recommend, I love having extended lashes and these ones suit me best ! Am absolutely thrilled with the result. If you prefer a full, high impact . glamorous look that lasts longer and requires minimal maintenance then look no further, plus with the special offer in the month of September you can get them for £20 off! Russian Layering is a multi lash technique. Using very fine fans of 3-8 artificial lashes put on one of your natural lashes. These fans are hand made by the therapist, dipped in glue and then placed on your natural lash. Russian layering gives you a fuller thicker look without being heavy. These lashes feel very light a fluffy but still gives you great volume. Like classic eyelash extensions, Russian Layering lash extensions require infills approximately every 3 weeks, where grown out lashes are removed and fresh ones put on leaving your set as good as new! A full set of Russian Layering lash extensions take about 2 and a half hours to complete. Normally £75, on offer in September for £55.

Garlic, Mushroom & Olive Chicken thighs An absolute classic here but, and I hate to blow my own trumpet, one of the best I think... plus I have a friend, who shall remain nameless, who brings garlic with her wherever she goes. I used to think she was barmy but in fact now I find it quite an adorable quirk that I totally get... and of course for me it means that I happen to have a lot of garlic knocking about. The garlic gets a long slow cook here so it’s beautifully mellow by the time you serve the dish, I’m also including some fennel bulb (well, you know me...) as well as spring onion for a sharper, more summery vibe, plus my favourite lemon thyme to add a little pep! I’m using chestnut mushrooms here which are a robust, medium to small brown mushroom with a lovely nutty flavour that hold up well in the roasting process but feel free to use any mushroom of your preference... Chicken thighs are a gift from god. They are the tastiest part of the chicken by a country mile, they are tender yet robust so work will in slow-cook style dishes. They have a glorious layer of juicy fat around them so are in effect self-basting. They are inexpensive and go a long way which means you can splash out and buy free-range or at the very least, farm assured. I always buy them with the bone in and skin on because they’re even tastier and they are very versatile...

6 chicken thighs 2 bulbs of garlic (roughly 25 cloves – skin on) half a fennel bulb – roughly chopped 5 spring onions – roughly chopped using the whole length 7 medium chestnut (brown) mushrooms – quartered 1 glass of white wine a handful of pitted, green olives seasoning 1 large sprig of lemon thyme 1 large sprig of rosemary Place all the veg into an oven-proof roasting dish and lay the chicken thighs on top, skin side up. Season well with salt and pepper and sprinkle plenty of herbs on top, then carefully pour a glass of white over the whole thing. Cover with foil and roast on 160C for an hour and a half, then remove the foil, turn the oven up to 170C and turn the chicken thighs over so they’re skin down, then roast for another 30 minutes, then turn the thighs back over, turn the oven up to 180C and roast for a final 20 minutes till they’re golden brown and divinely delicious! Eat and of course, enjoy!
