LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION WITH MIDDLETONS How exciting! Local, independent agents Middleton Estates in Shoreham, showed Kirsty Allsopp one of the properties in their portfolio for sale on Shoreham Beach, the staff thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the shoot and were delighted one of their properties was chosen to feature in the next LocationLocationLocation series! “Thank you channel 4 and the Location Location Location crew. Been lovely to spend the day with you all. Fingers crossed for an offer” Fingers crossed indeed for the Shoreham Beach vendor!

STEYNING Food & Drink Festival The month long Steyning & District Food and Drink Festival came to an end on Sunday 2nd October. It was a very happy time, with some fantastic offers in the shops & eateries, plus some outstanding events. The Author Dinner & Book Signing at Sussex Carol Drinkwater in full flow during her interview with Gudrun Bowers Produce, with headliner Carol Drinkwater from the icon series All Creatures Great & Small, was a smash hit with the café bursting at the seams. Gudrun from Steyning Bookshop (who organised the evening) stood in for her mother, Sara Bowers, and conducted a great interview with Carol. The Adur Brewery Beer Festival at Steyning Cricket Club also proved a hit, doubling the attendance it received last year, when it was staged for the first time. The Breakfasts for Charity and the special lunch dishes looks set to bring in a donation of just under £400 for the Festival Charity, Know Dementia, which is really good news. Other events included the Daylands Farm Walk & Tea, Riverside Brewery Tour, Pubs & Breweries Walk, Wiston Estate Wine Tour, Pie & Pint Evening, Ashurst Tasty Walk, Best Local Allotment Competition, Pick It

November 2016 • Village Living

Cook It days, Pasture to Plate Lunch, Demonstrations & Workshops… the list is endless. On the last Saturday of the Festival – in the pouring rain – the judging of the Best Food Theme Shop Window Competition took place. The winners of the Foodie Section were The Little Sweetshop, with its wonderful display of “sweetie” food dishes & cocktails. The non-Foodie category was gloriously won by The Baby Boutique – their tiny window housing an exquisite Farmers Market Scene, all hand knitted; leeks, cauliflowers, sausage rolls, etc. on the stalls with knitted people in attendance – you had to use your imagination as to which of the figures represented Derek Crush, major organiser of this regular monthly occasion. Over at the Market the Annual Pumpkin Weigh was taking place, winners for the third year running being Family Ridley’s children with a gigantic specimen weighing some 350 lbs! The competition raised £150 for St Barnabas Hospice. This report cannot end without firstly recognising the generosity of the Festival sponsors, the Steyning & District Business Chamber & the Steyning Parish Council plus, of course, the tremendous work that is undertaken by the valiant Festival Committee. As always, the event is aimed at attracting more business to our area, at the same as having fun.

Brighton Charity Ball Vivacious Events are very proud to announce that our recent Brighton Charity Ball event held in association with Gifts for Angels and held on behalf of the charity Brain Tumour Research, has raised in excess of £7000.00 for this very deserving cause. Brain Tumour Research is a cause very close to the heart of the owner of Gift for Angels, Michelle De La Motte-Rice, who suffered the devastating loss of her daughter Lola as a result of a brain tumour.

n Saturday 8th October 2016, over 170 guests, the men all dressed in their stylish Tuxedo’s and the ladies adorned in their finest outfits, attended the Brighton Charity Ball held in the gorgeous and ornate Clarence Room at The Brighton Hilton Metropole, all of them enjoying an amazing evening of top quality entertainment, food and dance. Amongst many highlights of the ‘Hollywood Glamour ‘ themed evening were gold human statuette Oscars and live dancing all provided by the outstanding Manic Stage Productions team who thrilled the audience with their stylish show reel production. Prior to the sumptuous three course dinner, served outstandingly by the Metropole wait team, guest Speaker Tim Green from Brain Tumour Research made a heartfelt

and articulate speech thanking everyone for their support and informing guests of both the outstanding work carried out by the Brain Tumour Research team and the necessity of funding from events such as Brighton Charity Ball. Later in the evening guests were treated to music provided by live band The Soultastics who played some great tracks and who soon had guests dancing away to their classy and soulful tracks. Making a significant contribution to the amount of money raised by this event were funds raised by both the sale of raffle tickets and auction items, and we would like to pass on a most sincere thank you to our generous donators and our guests, and especially to our main event sponsor Barratt David Wilson Homes without whom this event would not have been possible.

Following the calling of the raffle and live auction expertly handled by out talented Toastmaster Mark Lanahan, the evening finished with a disco with music played by Bluedawg Entertainment who also provided photography and a photo-booth for the evening, the latter also providing an opportunity for guests to give a donation to Brain Tumour Research. Vivacious Events and Gifts for Angels would like to take this opportunity to extend a huge thank you to everybody who played their part and helped to make the evening such an outstanding success, all of which has helped to raise such a fantastic amount of money for Brain Tumour Research. With special thanks to: Oliver Simon Kay, Zoe & Ollie Miles from Bloomsbury Clinic & Studio, Flicker Rose, Watch Religion Brighton & James Ross Jewellers. The ‘C’ Word... This month we are talking the C word, that naughty nine letter word that comes round every year draining our bank accounts, exciting our children to the point of complete mania, but also allowing us to spoil our loved ones and make our home look fabulous! After reading last month’s article on autumn trends I am going to presume that you all took notice and got your homes up to standard so now we can just go all out for Christmas décor and this year you are spoilt for choice of how to turn your home in to a festive wonderland.

This cushion available from Magic and Sparkle (Marks and Spencer) is the most perfect example of winter animals and traditional warm colours, who wouldn’t love that little ‘hum pug’ looking at them whilst they opened their Christmas presents. If this is the year you want it all; glamour and warmth without a compromise on style, then pick velvet and velour materials in rich pink, purple, turquoise and metallic colours. In my opinion this theme is done best by using big bold statement pieces. A silver crush velvet sofa, like this one from abode sofas, would look great in a room themed this way and would also be great to drink your chosen Christmas tipple upon!

If you are wanting a glamorous Christmas this year choose black and white and add hints of gold, this theme can be carried throughout the whole home including the tree. On the local high street Next currently have some great black, white and gold accessories, or if you’re thinking of making a trip to the big smoke then be sure to pick up this must have black and gold feather bauble from the Harrods Christmas shop. Looking for something a bit cosier that will also appeal to the children, then choose winter animals, we are talking penguins, owls, bears, stags and any animal seen out and about in Santa’s company or in a snow scene, as your theme. These winter animals, whether fabric prints and soft furnishings, ornaments or tree decorations, should be in warm ‘traditional’ colours like reds, greens, browns and neutral tones.

If you wanted to give someone a gift for their velvet Christmas home these initial cushions I found in Marks and Spencer would be perfect. Just a little hint I am putting out there now to anyone reading who might want to buy me a little present this year! Saddened at the thought that this was the end of the C word from me? You will be pleased to hear that the December article is all about the Christmas table; what table, what chairs, what to decorate it with, what to serve in to and what to drink out of!

Taking ‘you time’ isn’t a crime! I’m not sure about you, and I know it’s “only” November, but I feel as though I’ve blinked and missed the time in between last Christmas and this. How come Christmas is nearly here again? I keep asking myself. I’m not ready… I keep saying to myself.

S

o with Christmas on its merry way (it gets closer by the day), a bit like the runaway train you see in an action film, how can we look after ourselves at what is, for many, a really stressful time of year? Apologies to those out there who breeze through the festivities... I’m honestly not trying to be a bar humbug, because obviously there are lots and lots of positives involved around Christmas especially where children are concerned, but there are also added pressures. The financial juggle for presents, as well food buying, the cooking, possibly driving or travelling to see relatives; let alone the overall dynamic of family juggling and “fitting” everyone in, even if they don’t get on or haven’t seen each other and you haven’t seen them for a whole year either. I really don’t mean it in a bah humbug way as I said, it’s just all rather a lot to consider when you think about it. Plus this is only from my perspective after all, but I reckon a few of you out there will share some resonance with me… Having said that, knowing Father Christmas is coming down the chimney and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer and his clan will be flying though the sky landing on every roof, is nothing to be overlooked... although with all the carrots and mince pies they consume on their trip round the world,

a post Christmas weight loss program might be the order of the day... My question to you though is “How can you take care of yourself with this added pressure and still come through the holiday time fairly unscathed?” My suggestion to you would be to put yourself at the top of the family and friend pile for a little while. Taking time for yourself (are you feeling uncomfortable at my suggestion?), because actually you do deserve some “you time”, even if there is a little voice inside you that says you don’t. Sometimes we get a bit lost and overwhelmed during the festivities, let alone at any other time of year! A bit like taking a journey having left the map or sat nav at home. You know where you would like to go and have a rough idea of how you’d like to get there, but you’re just not sure of the way. So if you do feel slightly uncomfortable at my suggestion… Taking “you time” isn’t a crime. Putting yourself first for even a small amount of instance during those stressful periods we all go through in life, actually benefits those around you, because it enables you to deal with daily stressors and life better. My experience is that using Talking Therapy, Counselling, NLP or Hypnotherapy and speaking to someone who “gets it”, enables you to find your own personal map, or sat nav to where you want to go.
