VL MEETS ST PETER’S BACKSCHOOL IN TIME • 7

St Peter’s School Nestled in a quiet part of Shoreham, St Peter’s is one of the town’s best kept educational secrets: a small Catholic one form entry school.

O

ffering caring and inclusive education with classes of thirty in each year group. With standards that are consistently high, St Peter’s is a very strong performing school at Key Stage One in the locality, with good phonics results and above national level at KS1 – data which has been verified by local authority moderation. The school is also in the top three for Key Stage Two results, which is above the majority of both local and national schools. St Peter’s has rigorous and high standards in the new challenging national curriculum, alongside a creative and engaging approach. The school has a caring, family ethos where every child is known to all staff. The pupils feel confident and safe, knowing that if they need any help with anything either in or out of the classroom, they only need to ask. There is a no bullying policy in place at St Peters; the children from an early age are reminded of the importance of being kind, to each other and themselves. As a parent of two children at the school I am relaxed in the knowledge that if any playground situation arises, it will be dealt with appropriately and properly. The attitude to behaviour is firm but fair and there is always a positive to be found. Children are encouraged to think for themselves, both in the classroom and with being responsible with their belongings and with their behaviour. The school fully embraces the children’s imaginations and staff take part in all themed days such as World Book Day, book week, survival week, and other themes, such as holiday day when the children all “flew” on St Peter’s airlines to various exotic locations. There’s a fantastic, large, new Reception outdoor area lain with high quality astro turf – making it an all-day any day place to be!

The children at St Peters enjoy playing and honing their sports skills on the expansive field, with swimming lessons based at Lancing College, for one term a year (four and up). The spacious grounds are used in all seasons, and both netball / basketball courts in the playground. The children have recently secured four first places at sports tournaments against other local primary schools. This is an excellent achievement for such a small school, the competition out there is fierce and the children have worked extremely hard across the forms to get to this level in sports such as rounders, cross country, gymnastics, football, cricket and rugby. The school offers a wide range of clubs both at lunch time and after school, and have access to a breakfast and end of school service, which is as most of us know an invaluable service to most parents. The PTA is very active and includes an amazing team of mums (and Dads at events!) who are fantastic at raising money for the school, getting local businesses to support with raffle prizes and which supports the school with fun Christmas and summer fayres, uniform sales, school discos and magic shows, cake sales, various dress up days plus quiz nights and even the upcoming Elvis night for the parents! St Peters is a very welcoming, friendly, and all-encompassing school; I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking to place their child in a caring and safe, environment at the start of their education. Xmas Table Settings As promised in our last article here is this month’s Christmas table setting article. Christmas to us here at Popsicle Interiors would be nothing without the films that have come to represent the Festive Season, so we have taken our top 3 Christmas films and turned them in to Christmas day table settings. First on our list is Elf, an iconic film, full of colour and humour. If you have children then this theme would be perfect. Colours; go for bright green and candy cane red and white. Start with a crisp white table cloth, place a white and red stripy table runner down the middle. Choose bright green plates and red and white spotty napkins folded up on top of the plates. Splatter the table with jars of brightly coloured sweets (well it is Christmas!) and use candy canes to make homemade place holders. Finally make sure every person round the table can join in with some Elf selfies, we found this set at John Lewis. Second on the list; The Nightmare Before Xmas, this theme is as dark as Elf is bright. Colours; use purple, black, white and hints of orange. Start with a black tablecloth, black and white striped table runner and dark purple charger plates with plain white plates on top. Make placeholders out of Jack baubles and black and white paper napkins. Pop an orange and white striped candy cane into your guests drinking glass and place this large snow globe, from collectibles, as a centre piece to complete the theme.

Last, but by no means least, is my most favourite of all film’s ever; Home Alone. The theme for this film table setting doesn’t jump up and smack you like the previous 2 but we can assure you it’s going to be a good one! The main reason we love Home Alone so much is that the film colours and in particular the McCallister house decorations are Christmas personified, they are traditional and classic, with rich colours. Colours; choose deep reds and golds with hints of dark green. Start with a red tablecloth, layer with a gold and red table runner, gold charger plates, red coloured glass wine glasses and your finest Christmas crockery, this set by Williams-Sonoma works perfectly with the theme. Kevin McCallister loves Christmas tress so use tree ornaments to decorate the table along with little house scenes. For place cards use quote cards from the movie like this one found on printables.

All that leaves us to say is “Merry Christmas Ya Filthy Animals”!

How to be Happy :) As 2017 approaches, are you someone who waits to see what will happen, or do you dream of what you might be doing by the end of next year? If you dream, do you know that you’ll achieve them? We are brought up to be sensible and logical but that doesn’t help us follow the calling we have inside. We stick with the job and the pension, we stay where we feel comfortable and then we end up watching travel programmes or reading magazines to vicariously live our dreams through others. This month I’d like to propose that you be the one that goes after your dreams rather than the “maybe one day” person. My gift to you this Christmas is a 3 Step process to follow if you want to make 2017 a different kind of year. Step 1. Get clear on what you want. This sounds obvious but I see so many people who don’t really know what they want. The way to discover this is to listen to that inner voice, the one that keeps whispering to you but you push away. You carry on being logical, saying to yourself, “I could never do that’ I’m silly to dream of that, I don’t have the time, I don’t have the money…” You can choose to ignore this longing inside, or you can choose to live a more fulfilled and inspired life. If you know what your dreams are it’s time to act! You’re not getting younger – and it’s never too late! You have the capability to bring these experiences into your life; you just have to trust yourself. You have these dreams because you know deep down that you only have this one life. What are you waiting for? Give yourself permission to create the lie you desire. Step 2. Decide to do one thing that will move you in the direction of your dream. Your dream might feel just too huge and unattainable right now. That’s good, why dream unless it is a big fat audacious dream? I know it can feel overwhelming but you can break it down into baby steps that feel more comfortable. For example, your desire might be to write a best seller. So what is the first step you can take? You could join a creative writing group, or start writing a daily journal. There will be other steps, but the first one sets you on your journey. Step 3. Get moving! Think of creating your life the way you’d take any journey. First you have to choose the destination. Only then can you work out the route. The next step is to put your foot on the accelerator and start driving! So to reach your dreams you have to focus on your dream and spend time on making them happen. Nothing ever happened from sitting on the sofa. If you really want to do the thing you’ve always wanted to do in 2017, you have to take those action steps. Go and get what you need, whether it’s practical help or support. If dreams are going to become reality they need investment, and that can be investment of time, money or effort. I wish you joy this Christmas, but more than that I wish you allow your dreams to become your reality in 2017. www.villagelivingmagazine.co.uk | tel: 0785 2231512
