STEYNING DESIGN WHAT’S SCHOOL ATON 32 • 7• 7

STEYNING CofE PRIMARY SCHOOL SEEKS FUNDRAISING SUPPORT A year on since the appointment of new Headteacher Sue Harrison, Steyning CofE Primary School continues to thrive. New initiatives such as the introduction of Read Write Inc, a structured approach to teaching literacy, have ensured a continuation in high levels of learning and progress. However, due to increasing costs and a decreasing income, the school faces tough financial decisions for the year ahead. Mrs Harrison says: “Our income is down by around £30,000 for the 2017/18 school year but with no reduction in pupil numbers. This is due to a reduction in the payment per pupil from West Sussex County Council. Added to this, our projected outgoings have increased by approximately £40,000, largely due to increased salary, pension and national insurance contributions forced upon us.” The school has cut back as much as possible in previous years but it looks increasingly inevitable that the cuts are going to affect the provision for the pupils. Planned steps include a further reduction in staff, with temporary contracts not being renewed, as well as the provision for education outside of the core curriculum being cut.

David Peace, Chair of the Governors at Steyning CofE Primary School says: “As school governors, our responsibility is to ensure we deliver the best education for our children with the resources available. We realise there is no more money and realistically this situation is not going to get better for at least another 5 years. But we are determined to minimise the impact on our children. We have therefore taken the decision to seek alternative funding through sponsorship and grants. We believe passionately that we need to secure additional funding to ensure that every child is given the best opportunity for their future.” As part of this proactive approach to address the budget deficit, the school’s Governors are looking for sponsorship to help fund vital new resources. This includes planned upgrades to the school’s IT provision and new sports equipment and kit. The Governors are also looking to recruit a new member that can offer expertise in fundraising and bid writing. If you are interested in sponsoring the school or applying for the Governor vacancy then please email Benita Hibbert, the Clerk to the governors at Benita.Hibbert@steyningprimary.org.uk.

Co-opted Governor Vacancy Steyning CofE Primary School Governors are looking for an experienced fundraiser and/or bid writer to join their team. The role of School Governor is voluntary and it is a great opportunity to get involved and really make a difference for the young children in Steyning. The successful candidate will be appointed for a four year term. With constricting budgets the governors have made the decision to look for corporate sponsorship to enable us to deliver the high quality education to our children. We are now looking for someone who works or has worked in a fundraising capacity who can bring their expertise to our team and lead this new initiative. The governing body meets once a month during term time on a Thursday evening at 7pm. The successful candidate will: 1. Have relevant experience in fundraising and/or bid writing. 2. Be committed to helping the school and in particular the children. 3. Have time to get involved and attend the regular meetings. 4. Be willing to have a DBS check carried out and make safeguarding children a priority. The Clerk has details of the regulations concerning the qualifications and disqualifications connected with the role of governor, which you should read carefully before applying for this voluntary role. If you are interested please apply with a letter to the Clerk to the governors. Please email your application to: Benita Hibbert Benita.Hibbert@steyningprimary.org.uk If you have any questions please feel free to ask the Clerk on the address above. WELLBEING SOLUTIONS DESIGN WHAT’S ATON 32 • 11 • 11

LOSE WEIGHT BY GETTING HEALTHIER Summer will be upon us soon and yet again the race against time to fit into our summer clothes has started. I want to share some tips with you that I picked up from talking to Barbara Cox who is an award winning business woman as well as a nutritional therapist and health columnist for several high street magazines. Barbara explained to me that a detox diet is necessary to lose weight; a diet of fresh vegetables, good fats and clean proteins alongside vitamin and mineral supplementation will gently break down any ‘mucoid plaque’ that has built up in the lining of our stomach due to pollution and chemicals absorbed through our skin and ingested from non-organic foods.

When we heal and soothe the lining of our gut it becomes easier to absorb the nutrition and goodness from our normal day-to-day diets. In this way we will find it easier to be in control of our weight. As part of the detox you may want to reduce or stop gluten, dairy and sugar. When choosing a healthy snack or meal replacement, try to avoid soy or whey protein. Instead, you may want to choose a good protein such as edamame beans or cranberries. If you want to have a shake as part of your detox try to aim for a product that is 100% gluten-free, dairy-free, soya-free, without GMOS’s and artificial sweeteners or preservatives. Ensure that you include fibre, probiotics and prebiotics in your daily diet and superfoods such as pomegranates, okra, acerola, acai berry, mangosteen [most commonly found in capsules or juice in the UK] to name a few. There are proven healthy and natural solutions out there and I would be delighted to discuss your needs and objectives and provide you with a bespoke solution. Mobile phones... good or bad?

I have been taking more notice of one “habit” that I believe a lot of us suffer with; our constant interaction and our ever-increasing dependent relationships with our mobile phones. Instead of interacting with each other and those around us, we ignore each other, choosing instead to check our messages, emails and social media. We look everything and anything up in an instant, and it sometimes seems as though we have a more in depth relationship with our phones than we do with people.

M

y reason for highlighting this is that when I was away recently with my husband, as we walked along the seafront past restaurants, we were having the “mobile phone” conversation. We then made a point of looking to see how many people – either in groups or in couples – were using or checking their phones rather than talking to each other. It was at least half, if not more. On another day we were at a lovely cliff top bar and restaurant and again we looked to see how many people were checking their phones and again it was well over half the people sitting there. We watched as one foursome sat together hardly saying anything to each other. One person had his head bent down looking at his phone, occasionally showing his friends what he was looking at, whilst the other three talked in between checking their own phones. I know I am as guilty of the next person of this on occasion, so much so, that I am standing in a post office queue (where I will be for ages) on my phone adding notes to this article. I did think about what I was doing though and asked myself why; coming up with the answer that it was as good a place as any. That it was also peaceful

standing with the sun shining into the post office on my back, but I did also fleetingly think, “what about looking around and just doing nothing?” I reflected and decided to make a conscious choice to carry on making notes on my phone, before sending my son a Whats app message. Random behaviour, or the norm today? I think this is the norm. I also believe that whilst checking our mobile phones for messages etc, or using them to makes notes as I did, whilst this is now the “norm”, it is an unconscious process that has turned into a habit, which most of us engage in without really thinking about what we are doing. I find I now consciously choose to leave my phone at home on evenings out with friends or my husband, or leave it in the car when I get where I am going. Whilst I know I would feel odd doing this during the day, in the evening I like the peace of not having my phone with me gives me. Maybe have a think for yourself and see if what I say resonates with you on any level, especially the next time you pick up your phone to check your messages or social media. I know it does with a lot of my clients… and I wonder how this is for you.

There are free-roaming cattle, sheep, ponies, geese and deer which may have young, so leads are essential at all times. We saw some gorgeous pooches come to the fair last year. We have thought of them with a several stalls selling delicious doggy treats for good dogs, plus handmade collars and leads. Knepp Castle is the subject of an unusual and nationally important re-wilding project and there will be the chance to learn more about this at the fair. Wildlife safaris have

RECIPE • 19

Banana & Vanilla Victoria Sponge This cake is practically perfect and absolutely divine and so simple to put together. The addition of the banana at the end is inspired and adds a wonderful moistness. A classic strawberry jam and then some fresh strawberries to compliment the banana (if you’ve not tried banana and strawberry before you absolutely must they are a winning combination.) We use the ‘weigh-the-eggs’ method to bake the cake. This is a classic, no fuss, always win method where you weigh the eggs in their shells and then use the equal measurement of butter, sugar and flour to create the cake. • 3 large free-range eggs • 200g golden caster sugar • 200g butter – at room temperature • 150g self-raising flour • 50g ground almonds • 2 teapsoons vanilla (I used the brilliant Nielsen-Massey vanilla bean paste) • 1 ripe banana • jam and fresh strawberries Grease and line 2 20cm loose-bottomed cake tins and pre-heat your oven to 170C. Combine the flour and the ground almonds and set aside. Place the butter and sugar into a bowl and beat furiously into submission until you have a wonderfully light and whipped creamy texture… a stand mixer will do this in five minutes, an electric whisk will do this in 8 mins and a wooden spoon and a lot of jiggling will do this in 10 mins. Then add one egg and a third of the flour mix and beat in, then the second egg and another third of the flour mix and beat in and then the last egg and the rest of the flour, then beat in the banana along with the vanilla. Beat well until it’s all whipped up and the banana is broken and creamy. You may need to add a dash of milk to slacken the consistency if it looks a little thick. Divide equally between the two cake tins and bake for 25-30 mins until golden and risen and firm to touch – set aside to cool entirely. Once cool, slather the cake in jam and fresh strawberries and then lay the other cake on top and top off with more fresh strawberries. Eat and of course, enjoy!
