An interview with

Guy Watts from Architectural Plants

Tell us a bit about you and your company Architectural Plants was established in 1990 by Angus White and has been going strong for 27 years. We’re a specialist nursery with a strong enthusiasm for the sculptural qualities of plants. I am now Managing Director of Architectural Plants and Chairman of a charity, Streetscape, which I co-founded in 2011. I broke 2 world records as the first Pairs team crossing of the Indian Ocean. What is Architectural Plants, what do you specialise in? We specialise in plants that are both shapely and exotic. We’re based on the A29 between Billingshurst and Pulborough. We are open to both retail and trade customers. We provide garden design and planting services, from small town courtyard gardens to large country gardens needing full re-design. We also source and supply pots, garden sculpture and seating to complement our plants. We’re child and dog friendly too. Why should people visit Architectural Plants? We are much more than a plant nursery. We aim to be a destination of excellence in horticulture. We’ve recently launched a home & garden shop and cafe serving coffee, cakes, lunch and ice creams all sourced from within a 30 mile radius, which you can enjoy sitting amongst the plants or by our lake. What plans do you have for the future? It’s a very creative environment, we are always looking to challenge the way things are done. We love to support and work with local suppliers and we plan to celebrate them, starting on 16th September with our first Farmers & Makers Fair. We’re actually looking for exciting brands to join us with a stall on the day.

Farmers & Makers Fair – Wednesday 16th September Our first Farmers and Makers Fair. Wander through a tempting array of stalls from growers, artists and craftspeople from across Sussex and beyond. Join us for a tipple of Gin, really good sausages, artisan cheeses, Dexter Beef, local honey, beautiful ceramics, unique children’s clothes and much more. Creative Maintenance Course – Wednesday 20th September Spend a full day learning some AP signatures and horticultural tricks of the trade including how to strip a Trachycarpus, raise Bamboo, clip Cupressus and how to use a blow torch to manicure Cordylines. We also cover pruning, including an overview of the art of niwaki pruning and tool sharpening.

Jasmine Gin Fizz

RECIPE • 25

A FORTNUM & MASON TEATAIL

I find it both a delight and a pain when brands send me cocktail ingredients. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a cocktail, it’s just I’m one of those really lazy people who like to have a cocktail made for me, preferably by a handsome barman whilst I lay in a hammock around a pool somewhere tropical. I actually quite like making cocktails but they can be a bit of a faff and I don’t know if it’s just me but I always make an un-holy mess too. It’s all very well when you’re in a bar and you can throw the equipment into a sink and someone else washes up but at home you have to be quite dedicated to the art to want to be bartender for the night… and that’s what I love about this cocktail, it can be served in individual glasses but can also be more of a punch cocktail and served in a large bowl or teapot as I’ve done here. As well as championing the Fortnum & Mason Cocktail I’m also here to shout about a bit of a local phenomena, the Lincolnshire Gin. The good people at Pin Gin have created a very decent gin indeed and are proudly shouting about their local heritage… which of course makes me very happy.

• 2 measures Jasmine Gin • 1 measure fresh lemon juice • 2 teaspoons honey mixed with 2 teaspoons warm water • 1 large egg white • Ice • 1 measure chilled soda To make your Jasmine Gin, soak a tablespoon of Jasmine Pearl Tea in 200ml of gin for at least 12 hours, then strain and set aside. In a cocktail shaker, combine the 2 ounces of Jasmine Gin with the lemon juice, honey syrup and egg white and shake well. Add ice and shake again. Pour through a fine strainer into a chilled glass or china cup, stir in the soda and garnish with jasmine flowers or lemon wedges. F&M have many tea-based cocktails on their blog, so do check it out for inspiration!
