small town such as Steyning is worthy of a place of remembrance, refurbishment groundworks to improve the condition of the garden began on 11th of July, and huge thanks go to all who have participated in ensuring the successful conclusion of this project. The aims and objectives of the project are to provide a Memorial Garden which will be seen by all who visit as a peaceful and beautiful place in which to sit, contemplate and enjoy. It is essential that the facility should include total access for wheelchairs and sensory planting has been included for the benefit of the partially sighted. These points have been taken into full consideration in the new design by Alex Bell who is a professional prize
Village Networking – A Success Story
A
network of village-based business networking groups, set up by local businesswoman Jo Donne, in Henfield two years ago now includes Storrington, Lindfield and Southwater. “My vision is that rural residents running a small business will be able to network on their doorstep with other village businesspeople. Networking is such a great way to promote yourself and meet up with other local entrepreneurs for support and exchange of ideas” says Jo, who runs her own utilities consultancy business from home. village Networking meetings are informal and friendly but serious about business too. Everyone has a chance to present their business and to tell the group any exciting news they may have, as well as passing referrals and thanking other members for any help given. To finish there are one-to-one sessions, where members get to pair up and get to know each other better. To help them celebrate the second birthday of the Henfield village Networking group, Jo invites you to visit the social business networking event 6pm until 8pm Monday 12th September,@ The George Hotel, Henfield. Go and meet the members of village Networking Group for an evening of business networking with a social twist. only £2 per person. s part of their 50th anniversary celebrations Sussex Wildlife Trust teamed up with local bakers Truffles recently and organised a fun competition for primary school children to design their own nature inspired biscuit. The winning biscuit, shaped and decorated as a frog, was designed by Isla Kinsey-Tozer from Seahorse Class, St Peter’s Church of England Primary School in Henfield. Five year old Isla’s winning biscuit is now on sale in all of the ten Truffles Bakery shops in Henfield, Horsham, Storrington, Billingshurst, Burgess Hill, Steyning, Shoreham, Lancing, Hurstpierpoint and Hove. Farm Diary W
here has the summer gone??? The nights are drawing in already, how sad, that means it will soon be Christmas! (Sorry) We have already had to talk turkeys with Copas our supplier! We have had lots of new changes in our pig department. We have just purchased a young pedigree Gloucesteshire old Spot boar that we have named Boris. He is gorgeous and very friendly and he loves being scratched and he really loves cuddles! He has had to have lots of suncream on him as he was kept in a barn with his previous owner/breeder and so his skin needs to toughen up slightly. He loved having the cream rubbed in, even all over his ears... So cute! He had also discovered what fun it is to root around in the field and dig it all up! We went to the GoS show and sale in Cirencester with our stockman richard and his family. We had a great time at the market it was a traditional market and Keith did all the bidding for our boar. We we’re delighted to bring home our new pedigree Gloucestershire old Spot Boar. He was born at the end of october 2010 so he is nearly a year old and ready for action!! We hope he will be a good boar and produce us lots of beautifully marked piglets. Charlie and Patricia have now hit retirement hence the arrival of our new stock. We have 2 gilts (female pigs that have not yet had a litter) arriving any day now, so that’s exciting too. Their names are rosie and Delilah. We are also keeping one of Dorothy’s beautiful young gilts to bring on for breeding, but that will happen later in the year. rosie is due to give birth in october so I will keep you posted.. We are honoured to have won a Great Taste Gold Award for our Pork and Leek sausages with Sussex charmer cheese. This is a very prestigious award to win and we are excited about it. I’m sure you may have seen the stickers on other products. All our sausages are made by hand in our butchery by my husband Keith. We use our free range GoS pork in our sausages. The shop is bursting with new products and we have a new menu in the tea room as well as all the usual homemade cakes and scones. We also have goodies for babies and young children and some colouring pens and colouring books. Best wishes,

Matt Cowan’s
Gardening Diary A
lthough every season has it’s highlights, autumn is my favourite time of year as the leaves begin to turn, reflecting a new sharper light, the evening air turns crisp and fresh and the stars appear brighter in the night sky. Look out for the full harvest moon on the 12th of September and the hunter’s moon, full again on the 12th october, traditionally allowing us some special extra light to finish the harvest or stock up on migrating birds for the winter! It’s harvest time again and in spite of many challenging weather conditions through the season, we now have trug-loads of wonderful food in abundance and can congratulate ourselves on the produce of our labour. Jam has been made and the freezer is well stocked to give us delicious fruit and vegetables from the allotment long into the winter months. I have spent time in so many vastly different gardens this year and met a wide variety of people with such different needs and approaches to their gardens and plants, which is always an education and a great opportunity for me to learn. To me, one thing clearly stands out. Whether professionals, amateurs or novices, gardeners and garden owners are custodians of the landscape and have a profound and powerful impact on the natural environment and an important role to play too. When considering the loss of natural habitat to the ever increasing needs of development and apparent necessity of intensive chemical agriculture, domestic gardens are actually helping to conserve and expand bio-diversity by providing rich, often unique and protected habitat for all kinds of plants and wildlife. With the hundreds of thousands of square meters of domestic garden in West Sussex we are talking about a huge nature and wildlife reserve so enjoy playing your part in its welfare and evolution!

13 • BACK PuB WALK IN TIME
Whites Pub Walk By Claire Eaton A countryside and river walk from Whites in Steyning High Street, at approximately 6.5 miles and taking around 3 hours of your time. Enjoy strolling along the Adur, in all weather types on this flat and easy circular walk back to Whites. Note that paths can get muddy in our ‘glorious’ English weather, so it is advisable to wear appropriate footwear. 1) Step out of Whites and cross the road opposite into Church Street, and continue along this road, passing St Andrews church on your left, and crossing the high bridge over the bypass until you reach roman road on your right. Continue along this road until you reach Castle Way on your left. Stay on the left side and at the end of the road turn into a path between the houses.
4) Bear right through a gate/stile and turn left and continue along the edge of a field, to cross to another stile. Keeping to the right, follow the field boundaries and footpath signs and cross a wooden bridge at the end, then walk uphill with a small oak copse on the right. In the distance on the right, the farm buildings of Huddlestone Farm can be seen. Turn left and follow the minor road, ignoring side paths and tracks.
2) Go down to a crossing path and turn left and cross a stile into open fields. Stay on a high path along a stream; turn right over the stream and cross the metal bridge over the river Adur. Turn left at the bridge, keeping the river on your right. After a few bends, you will reach an old railway bridge and cross a stile up onto the old railway track and after crossing via a gate, continue along the river.
5) At the junction with a bench, turn right and the road surface becomes a track. Continue along the track and you soon meet up with the Downs Link (straight on, not left). Follow this snaking track and at Greenfields Farm entrance, the track becomes a road again and you soon cross an old railway bridge. Stay on this minor road passing a water treatment works and Kings Barn Farm.
3) Continue through five gates/stiles until reaching Northover Pump, then turn left away from the river and follow the track, passing through a field gate. Walk past some houses and farm buildings on the left and at the next junction turn left through a field gate into a farmyard.
6) At the end turn right, and continue straight on leaving the Downs Link as it turns left between Kings Barn End, stay on this road as it crosses the bypass on a high bridge. Carry on back past the church on your right, and continue until you reach Whites at the roundabout ahead.

Colour Analysis With Helen Reynolds at Stylestep
C
olour Analysis, I remember, was all the rage in the 80’s. It then seemed to quite literally fade away, but I’m pleased to say it’s back with a bang and it was with some excitement that I joined Helen from the Independent Image Consultancy firm, Stylestep, to discover what I should be searching for not only in my clothes shades, but also my make- up, jewellery and hair colour to enhance my natural skin tones. Helen works from home in Partridge Green. Her house was easy to find and there is ample parking. Helen successfully launched her business on 1st July 2009, so has just celebrated her 2nd Birthday. Initially, clients came via friends and referrals; she did little advertising. Her clientele hail from all over the South including London, Crawley, Brighton and Worthing. The roots of colour analysis originate from the Bauhaus Movement in

Germany around the early 1900s. Bauhaus was a school for architecture, art and design and one member, Johannes Itten, is said to be the inspiration for it. He associated colour palettes with four types of people and named these by the Seasons. By knowing which Season you are, you can learn what is right and wrong in your colour shades. It is not that you should avoid certain colours but that you understand the shade of a colour which works with your complexion. A good colour will give you a nature lift. Your skin will glow and wrinkles will be minimised (hurray!). You will look more awake and fresh. With this comes confidence that could be life changing. Bad colours can make you look tired, drawn, a bit yellow and older. Not every client will see a big dramatic effect as their choice in colour shade may have been the correct or nearly the correct one already. But for
By Ginette Stevens
some it is a majorly positive change. The idea is to boost self-esteem and from this, confidence will come from within and shine through. In simple terms, it can be for anyone! Helen has four distinct process steps and you can chose to experience one or all of these. The first step (and the one I am here for today) is Colour Analysis. This is to discover your Season. The good news is that once you know which Season you are, this will be yours for life. It is very rare for a person to change Seasons if the colour analysis is carried out properly. Do bring your make up bag along as Helen will also help you see which colours are working well and which ones you may want to think about replacing. Step 2 is Image Analysis. Here you can learn which styles and shapes you should be wearing. The type of neckline, sleeve length and patterns are

discussed, as well as Helen helping you look at the selection of clothes she will have asked you to bring. Advice will be given on whether to keep or recycle! A full personalised report will follow your meeting. Step 3 involves Helen visiting you and conducting a wardrobe assessment. Rather like Gok Wan’s visits in his Fashion Fix programmes. Lastly, Step 4: Personal shopping. It’s exactly what it says on the tin – Helen accompanying you on a shopping trip to fill any gaps left in your wardrobe and to visit the best shops suited to your shape, colouring and budget. Time for my Colour Analysis session to begin. I donned a disposable cape and cap to bring an air of neutrality to my face. Helen then began with the colours she thought were from my least compatible Seasons. Spring colours which were bright and vibrant
made any colour in my face disappear. Winter colours did not bode well either. Black, Helen suggested could be worn if softened with another colour. We spent quite some time trying Autumn and Summer colours. Some of the autumn colours felt good but when the same colour but a slightly different shade from Summer was placed around my shoulders, my skin texture improved. Taking off my cap, Helen explained that currently my hair was an autumn shade which meant that I could get away with autumn colours but my skin tone yelled summer. She suggested trying another shade of hair colour, just slightly lighter and cooler which would be more complementary. I was sure a lot of the clothes I already owned would be ‘summer’ shades but to be on the safe side I purchased a fabric swatch which not

only had all my colour shades in, but advice on jewellery, make- up and hair colours. Helen also gave me a useful leaflet on what makes a summer person and why the colour shades work so well. I have since had a mini wardrobe clear-out and have taken my swatches shopping. I felt more confident when choosing new clothes and matching colours in outfits. I think more about the colours I wear when choosing my daily outfit and feel more confident in myself and my style. Thank you Helen! Ports & Railway tracks of Steyning By Claire Eaton
F
or some of us, it is hard to imagine our local village Steyning with a busy and fully functioning railway station, let alone when it was known as Steyning Harbour of St Cuthmans Port back in the 11th Century. This slow yet dramatic change has evolved over three main types of transportation; waterways and river traffic, the Horsham to Steyning Turnpike and lastly the train station on the Steyning line. Steyning Harbour laid well back from the open sea, similarly to the ports of Arundel and Lewes. There is evidence of extreme sabotage to the port as the de Braose family at Bramber Castle, constantly interfered with the goods travelling to Steyning from the river Adur, and by hijacking the boats to steal these goods such as timber and stone, the decline of Steyning port began. The de Braose family, set on the failure of the Steyning port, also introduced rye
and Winchelsea ports into the equation, as well as the founding of New Shoreham, which all pushed Steyning towards failure. However, when rye and Winchelsea posed a threat to national defence in 1247, the Crown resumed them, allowing Fécamp Abbey to retain Steyning, which they favoured above the other Sussex ports. However, Mother Nature had other plans as the arm of the river where Steyning port was situated silted up and it is believed, ceased to exist by the early 14th Century. This did not mean the end for river transportation however, as timber and coal continued to be shipped up the Adur until the early 1800’s. one final push to save Steyning port came from the Duke of Norfolk who ‘made a proposal to revive Steyning’s river trade’ which unfortunately, came to nothing. A young boy at this time, Ernie Parrott, was said to have dropped
sandwiches over Beeding Bridge everyday to his father, who was a bargeman travelling upstream to New Shoreham port, carrying clay to the Shoreham cement works! As the river became less frequently used, silt coming down the river was deposited on each side of the river banks, and as they became larger and larger, the river began to dry up. A causeway was then proposed to be built over the muddy fields and the roads which were in treacherous conditions between 1461-1464, and so finally in 1764, the Horsham to Steyning Turnpike road was established. The turnpike, which is later known as “Beeding Turnpike road”, improved the condition of the main roads drastically, but the minor roads still had to be braved by many carriage drivers. There is evidence of many toll gates along the road through Ashurst, up to Steyning and then across to Beeding. Due to the survival of a receipt from 1793, we know that a certain Mr Philip Peckham passed through Bramber Gate on December 13th with five horses and a wagon, carrying five tonnes of goods which altogether cost him a total of eight shillings-four pence! The toll gates were an excellent way of raising money to maintain the road conditions and also repay the debts of the initial start up costs of the turnpike. Therefore once proposals were starting to be made in the early 1830’s about a railway line, all those in favour of the toll gates began to worry as a railway would mean quicker and easier journeys to direct villages around Sussex, so there would be significant decrease in profit from the tolls.

The opening of Steyning’s railway station on the 4th July 1861, is documented in the West Sussex Gazette, where the buzz and excitement for Steyning’s latest development is clearly perceptible,“...and the populance, as a matter of course, rushed out en masse to witness the wonder of the age”. The station meant that villagers of Steyning were able hop on and be in bustling Brighton in only half an hour! Outings were also now available to Portsmouth for a small price of two shillings for a return ticket, with only an hour and a half journey standing in the way. Schoolboys were able to attend Steyning Grammar School from places like Horsham or Henfield, before the school became a comprehensive one. Trains were also a much easier way to transport livestock to the market held in Steyning every Wednesday, where local farmers sold anything from chickens to cattle. Unfortunately, although Steyning station was used frequently and was one of the busiest on the line, other stations were not as well used, resulting in the shutting down of the entire line in 1966, where buses were supplied as a replacement. Steyning has undergone a slow transformation over many, many years, and it is amazing to think that all of our local villages have stayed put, yet the different methods of getting around them have changed extraordinarily.

The Green Man Partridge Green Reviewed by: Anna and Dan

e drive past the green man often but have never been in. The outside looks quite unassuming, while the interior has a fresh contemporary feel, without detracting from the warmth of a traditional local. Gastro frenzy is hitting our countryside with a vengeance! It’s a breath of fresh air being somewhere that still holds the informality and friendliness of a real pub. We were welcomed warmly by David the bar manager, who was very enthusiastic and informative about the establishment and the food. They have just held a Ball to raise money for Breast cancer research that raised £12,000! He has worked for Nick and Rebecca (The Owners) for Ten years and that most other staff had worked for them for many years. This is always a good sign. He recommended the fish and chips as the fresh Cod was delivered daily. We sat outside to have drinks and look at the menu. The Garden was okay, although slightly tired. The Menu was fantastic, I say this because it was 50% or more was fish and we love fish. There were a great deal of homemade choices, they even smoke their own Salmon, Dan was cheeky enough to ask for a taste even though he ordered the mussels for starter! David (bar manager) told us that the locals actually buy their smoked salmon direct from them because it’s so tasty! I chose the fresh dressed crab, homemade coleslaw and salad to start and the Whole fresh Plaice Meumiere for main. Dan chose the Mussels to start followed by the Line caught fillet of Sea bass. A very polite, smart waitress

showed us through to our table which was cute. While the placemats looked a bit tatty & dated, the overall table setting was very agreeable. The centre piece was a potted oregano, such a nice touch. Our starters arrived! Huge portions, Dan’s mussels came in a large pot and smelled delicious; he said they tasted good too, although not the biggest ever, they were succulent with a very rich sauce. My Crab was lovely. They brought out the smoked
salmon that Dan had cheekily asked to try and that was like another whole starter! Dan thought it was succulent, lightly smoked, but still retained its delicate flavour. Both dishes were well presented. With our starter also came with an array of artisan bread. After a small break (which could have been longer) they brought through our Main courses. Again both meals looked wonderful; my Plaice was so huge it was hanging off the sides of the

plate. Dan’s Sea bass looked so pretty with the asparagus fanned out perfectly. The Sea bass had a shallot, ginger and saffron cream sauce. The Sea bass itself was a little over cooked. We have been spoilt having access to such fresh fish with Dan’s fishing hobby, when fish is straight from the sea you don’t need to cook it for very long. Still the flavours were amazing. We were so full, but had to squeeze in a quick dessert ‘Affagato’ to share which is a Classic Italian dessert of vanilla ice cream, an espresso and Amaretto. To summarise – really friendly staff, Good service, good food, we would go again, we would recommend it and we are still full!

English Wine & Vine Nick Hempleman: owner of The Sussex Produce Company, award winning produce store in Steyning, West Sussex.
S
itting on a hill overlooking a vineyard bathed in the warm afternoon sunshine, you have to pinch yourself when you realise that you’re not in Provence but in Sussex where some of the most exciting wine making in the world is taking place. English wine (an important legal distinction. ‘English wine’ must be grown in England, ‘British wine’, which can simply mean wine blended in Britain from foreign grapes, wine, or concentrate), is undergoing a rapid transformation. once something of a bad joke, it’s critics are having to eat humble pie, washed down with a glass of award winning English wine. Take ridgeview. A little vineyard in Ditchling that has not only won many awards but recently beat over 700 champagnes, prossecos and sparkling wines, to be voted ‘the best sparkling wine in the world’. This sort of success is really refreshing because so often I feel myself lamenting the disappearance of heritage varieties of fruit and vegetables and increasingly even the disappearance
of local producers. Climate change seems to be offering imaginative growers the chance to do something new and they are doing it very well. Just up the road from us Wiston Estate is on the verge of releasing their new sparkling wine and it is already making waves in the industry. With such exciting things going on in local vineyards it is hardly surprising that foreign competitors are coming over to Sussex to see what’s going on. Big champagne houses are rumoured to be buying up tracts of south facing down land with the perfect ‘terroir’ so they can get a piece of the action. When the French come to England to buy land to grow wine on, then you know that we are sitting on something good. Always quick to support local producers doing something well, local people are now actively seeking out local wine. Personally I think with it’s strange language and rituals and pronunciations, it is easy to feel intimidated by the world of wine.
Therefore we are holding a wine tasting evening on Thursday 13th october. This is the first in a series of evening events with our suppliers and we will start with some of the fantastic ridgeview ‘champagne’ and move on to seven different wines from across the world. Simon Deakin our wine expert for the evening runs his own independent wine company and has bought for prestigious restaurants such as Amberely Castle and South Lodge Hotel. He is also exceedingly good entertainment! None of the wine we stock is available in the local supermarkets as we prefer to source from small, artisan winemakers that the big boys ignore. Some food will be provided and guests will be entitled to generous discounts off the wine that is tasted. Even though the evenings are still warm, Christmas looms ever closer so it may be worth keeping that in mind as you taste, we have a few delights including something rather special that goes perfectly with turkey…

ecently we attended Hampton Court Flower Show where we were awarded a silver-gilt medal for our display of rare ginkgos and shade loving plants. During the show we received many kind words and compliments on our range of plants and the service offered by Big Plant nursery. We would therefore like to offer a big thank you to everyone who spoke to us and indeed bought our plants. Hopefully we will see you all again next year when will be offering more exclusive home grown plants. onto September, this month it’s all about the planning and choosing of trees and shrubs for your garden. If you are looking for the Autumnal colours then a good place to start would be with a Liquid Amber tree. often mistaken for a maple, Liquidambar styraciflua has similarly-shaped fivelobed leaves. However, while the leaves on the maple are arranged in opposite pairs, those of the liquid amber appear alternately on the leaf shoots. Fruits of the tree are known as ‘monkey balls’ and are green when immature but ripen
to spiky brown globes that hang on the tree throughout the winter. Also known as the ‘Sweet Gum’ tree. The Autumn foliage colours are superb, the leaves are lustrous green all summer, changing through shades of brilliant autumn colours ranging from bright scarlet to deep red, lemon and purple making it a popular ornamental tree. Preferring warm and wet conditions, they are reasonably hardy and can survive as long as there is sufficient moisture in the soil. As this species prefers sheltered conditions it is best planted in the company of other small to medium sized trees. In nature it thrives with red oak, maple and tulip trees, but requires good light and damp fairly lime free ground. Milder conditions are also

an advantage. Increasingly popular in the south of England, another sign perhaps that sign that the climate really is changing. The name Liquid Amber, alludes to the yellowish-brown gum that exudes from the bark, it hardens when exposed to air. Although bitter to the taste it was used in America as chewing gum to sweeten the breath. The pleasant smelling gum is routinely used in adhesives, perfumes and in incense. Sizewise in approx 10 years you can expect them to grow 6mts. In the uK it is planted mainly for its magnificent colours of foliage but in its native habitat, especially in Mexico, it is cultivated for the liquid amber. The wood of these trees are of no use in construction as it rots easily, but it is dense and fine-grained and has been known to be used for veneers and furniture. Another good bet for the Autumnal colours, would be the Japanese acers, we have a huge range of these very easy to care for trees, with a variety of leaf colours, shapes and sizes, come and have a browse!

10/09/2010
W
e’re used to clouds in this country, so getting used to one more shouldn’t take us long. But what is this ‘cloud’ they keep talking about, and what does it mean to you? The ‘cloud’ in ‘computer’ terms is the internet, perhaps it’s prescient at this time for me to define ‘internet’; The internet is a mass of ‘big’ computers (servers) physically stored all around the world in what’s known as ‘data centres’, they’re all interlinked via the network. The ‘net’ part of it is the ‘web’ of infrastructure provided by the communications companies like BT etc, this is the cable and phone lines criss crossing the globe. (hence ‘world wide web’) Your BBC news or Yahoo email website is just a collection of folders and files, like you have in your ‘My documents’ on one or many of those servers. Keeping up so far..? When you type in www.seagulls.co.uk (if you’re that 10:32 way inclined) your internet provider (BT, Talk Talk etc) directs your browser (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome etc) to one or many of those servers. So if you think your internet speed is slow on occasion just have a think about what is happening as you click on ‘go’ or ‘return’. Your request is literally being sent around the world in a split second to give you the information you require. You may have noticed that all websites have ‘http://’ in front of the descriptive part of the website address for example (http://www.seagulls.co.uk), this is so the ‘internet’ or in this case the servers can differentiate between the traffic on the net, this is obviously important as you don’t want emails coming out of phone receivers and websites appearing on supermarket tills. (obviously that couldn’t happen but what a thought!) So that’s the cloud, but what does it mean for the future of computers as we know them today?

eek commencing September 12th is National Sexual Health Week; organized by the sexual health charity, FPA, to promote understanding of causes and treatment of sexual problems. The jokey strap-line does not do justice to a matter that causes many people a lot of anxiety. Sexual problems can have physical or psychological causes; sometimes both. Psychological causes can be linked to relationship difficulties, uncertainties about sexuality, and previous sexual experiences. Most people are very reticent to deal with sexual problems; let alone discuss them with others. Putting aside those problems that are of a physical nature, there are many areas that can be treated using Cognitive Hypnotherapy, which is a quick and very effective way of identifying and then resolving the subconscious issues that allow the problems to exist. Some of these are outlined below. orgasm problems often relates back to a trauma(s), often in adolescence, which create a negative association between elements of the sexual act and the trauma itself. These “anchors” can

have an adverse affect on the sufferer’s libido indefinitely, unless treated. Triggers can be such things as sounds, touch, smell and/or images that are associated with the original trauma. relationship issues can make the problems worse. In the case of rape, other emotions can result; such as feelings of guilt (e.g.’ why did I not resist more?’), anger (‘e.g. why did he get away with it?’). victims can experience P.T.S.D. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), with all the effects that it can bring. The sting can be taken out of the negative emotions involved, by using various hypnotic techniques. Men are particularly bad at coming forward with their problems. (I guess

He subsequently became interested in the concept of using them to help people and found that Hypnotherapy provided the ideal tools for this work. He is based in Storrington.
