Archaeological sites, intangible artefacts and keys, and a deep affinity in bridging cosmic worlds with stories and imagination. Artist Jay Horan explores ontological patterns in life and scientific research to create correlated cosmic themed artwork, music, literature and film. Horan’s approach to art is a labour-intensive process that combines experimental mediums in materials and traditional crafting techniques to discover fusions when creating projects. Horan’s work offers viewers to explore art in the form of intangible artefacts with thought-provoking inquiries.

Life experiences and travelling shapes a significant role in untethering Horan’s creativity. His latest projects were influenced by his stay with a nomadic Bedouin tribe in the heart of the desert at Wadi Rum, also known as Valley of the Moon, in Jordan. The experience from this captivating cosmic desert landscape infused Horan’s curiosity and creativity.

Horan’s abstract art piece, ‘The Johari Window in Retrospective’ was exhibited in New York at the Woodstock Artists Association & Museum. Horan presented his arts-based research and creative projects at several conferences, including the London Arts-Based Research Centre in London and OPSITARA in Invercargill. Horan’s work engages in community events, collaborations and commissions.

“LIFE EXPERIENCES CARRY EMBEDDED INTANGIBLE ARTEFACTS WAITING TO BE EXCAVATED”

What are some of your latest creative projects?

Handcrafting the ‘Mosaic Tribal Grains’ collection, writing ‘Dossiers of Solace Tales’, recording new music in ‘Portals of Ions’ , and shooting films for the ‘Constellation Stations’ and ‘Portal Stations’ collections.

Where do all of your creative inspirations come from?

I enjoyed the outdoors and exploring new discoveries since I was a child. I loved creating structures with small mosaic-stones, forming symbolic shapes while listening to the wind breaking between them. Also life experiences, mysteries and the sciences became inspirations as I grew up while travelling and learning from diverse cultures and minds from around the world.
