olumes have been written about the tiny village of Leavenworth nestled in the foothills of the Eastern Cascades. Often described as the Miracle Town its story is about the power and grit of the American spirit. The story began in the 1960â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when a group of local residents mortgaged everything to save their town from the depression of a declining lumber and railroad economy. They re-created their tiny mountain home building it into a Bavarian Village focused on tourism. The vision of those early dreamers worked to create what has become Washingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest tourist attraction. Today, the still tiny village of Leavenworth entertains millions from around the world. Today the entrepreneurial spirit that captured the magic of economic renewal continues as the community regularly reinvents itself. The old world Bavarian theme is still alive but every year finds new events and activities. And while some might wish otherwise, modern conveniences like cell phones and Wi-Fi are available in most of the local mountains and valleys. Under new ownership this year, Leavenworth Ale Fest is an opportunity for Northwest breweries to showcase their beer and ciders in support of the non-profit arts education and performance center Icicle Creek Center for the Arts. Attendees will find a variety of brews from more than 40 regional breweries and Hours are from 6:30 p.m.-10:30 p.m. but VIP tickets offer early access at 5:30 p.m. For the first time, this year’s event will also include the Make Ale for the Arts Home Brew Com-

A NUTCRACKER DAY IN LEAVENWORTH April 13

This is a day dedicated to the Nutcracker. There are special events at The Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, presentation of the history of nutcrackers, a chance to crack hazelnuts with a variety of different nutcrackers, a free poster to each family, and maybe win a free nutcracker. You can have your picture taken with our famous Karl or the giant Mouse King, and go on a nutcracker hunt. Winners of our Kids Nutcracker Making Contest will demonstrate their entries. A wonderful spring tradition, this will be the 49th Maifest in

the Bavarian Village of flowers. Enjoy the Old World celebration with great live entertainment, including traditional German dancing, the intricate Maipole dance and a street dance. The Grand March and Procession is one of the highlights of the weekend as horses, carts, carriages, Bernese mountain dogs, townspeople in their colorful trachten (traditional Bavarian garb), bands, musicians and the Leavenworth bier wagen parade through town. LEAVENWORTH SPRING BIRD FEST May 16-19

Celebrate birdsong and explore the natural world during the annual Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest. The Leavenworth area features spectacular habitats, attracting a wide variety of birds. Festival-goers may spot anything from the tiniest Calliope hummingbirds to the most majestic eagles. While birding is the heart of the weekend, activities also include “edu-tainment” science programs, wildflower walks, conservation displays, and arts events. Accordions like you’ve never experienced them before are at the Leavenworth International Accordion Celebration! ong before local residents came together to create the Bavarian Theme the upper valley was known for its agricultural produce. Apples and Pears were the primary crop but tree fruit growers have diversified their crops over the years to add cherries and now wine grapes. Today, the Leavenworth area is still the largest exporter of organic pears. Produce stands can still be found all along Highway 2 from Monitor to Lake Wenatchee and Highway 97 from Blewett Pass north to Highway 2. Apples, pears, nectarines, peaches, apricots, grapes and cherries are available in these picturesque stands, often tended by their owners from early morning until dusk. So, if the kids ever asked you where an egg comes from, or you would like to taste a truly fresh pear, you might want to stop by a local produce stand or check out one of the self-guided driving maps available at local visitor centers. Today’s orchardists, like the farmers before them, are finding innovative ways to make the land productive and to maximize the financial return from their efforts. They have diversified their crops with many new varieties of apples, pears and cherries. Creating some truly unique flavorful fruit. Now many have turned their attention to creating their own wines and ciders made with locally grown fruit. You will find many tasting rooms in the Bavarian Village offering samples of

their products. It is an opportunity to discover new beverages not available anywhere else. Another unique and popular fruit product, Aplets and Cotlets candy, is made right here in the valley. This world famous fruit candy is made in a broad variety of styles and flavors. Tours of the factory in Cashmere are open to the public. Before the Bavarian Village theme, before summer theater, river rafting and all of the recreational opportunities, farmers were turning the Upper Wenatchee River Valley into a rich agricultural region. With irrigation those innovative farmers turned a once arid land into one of the premier fruit growing areas in the country. As a result of their hard work and dedication, each spring the hills are filled with the sweet aroma of fruit blossoms. But agri-tourism is more than just produce stands and orchard tours. It includes wine tasting festivals, car shows, hay rides, petting zoos and even tours of an old fruit packing line. There is no need to leave the kids behind while you explore the local win-

eries. There are ample opportunities for the entire family to explore the world of agriculture in the Wenatchee River Valley. Valley wine makers experiment with both white and red varieties with equal curiosity and passion. It’s still too early to say which kinds of wine will establish a reputation in our region.

Each variety continues to garner awards and high marks at wine competitions all over the world. THE NUTCRACKER MUSEUM One of the unique treasures of Leavenworth is the worldfamous Nutcracker Museum, located on the Southwest corner of Front & Eighth Streets. Leave your rig in the parking lot and enjoy nature. Old Pipeline Bed in Tumwater Canyon - This trail in Tumwater Canyon offers a 2-mile round trip views of the Wenatchee River and sandy beaches for tired hikers to rest their feet. From Leavenworth travel 1.7 miles west on U.S. Highway 2 and turn left at the public fishing/picnicking area. Hike across the bridge and head upstream. Blackbird Island - Not a national forest trail, but an excellent destination for families. The Waterfront Park trail meanders along the Wenatchee River. Travelers can go west on U.S. Highway 2 from the Ranger Station, turn left at Ninth Street, then turn left at the end of Ninth and drive down the unpaved road to the parking area. There are signs at the trailhead. Twin Lakes Trail - Twin Lakes has two legs. The first 3.5 miles of the trail will take travelers to their first lake, and then another three-fourths of a mile takes them to the second. Both lakes

are closed to fishing. Travelers should follow U.S. Highway 207 north parallel to Lake Wenatchee until it banks left. Take a right on the White River Road. Follow signs for the Napeequa Crossing Campground and immediately after, park on the right hand side. Devils Gulch Trail - For a great early season trike, hikers can expect 17 miles of cliffs and hillsides as they head up and over Mission Ridge and wind across Mission Creek three times. Travelers will need to leave U.S. Highway 2, go over the bridge at Aplets Way in Cashmere, and turn right onto Pioneer Avenue. Travelers will go down two blocks on Pioneer, turn left on Mission Creed Road and follow it until it becomes a dirt road. At the dirt road, travel on for another 2.7 miles to the turnout. The trail will be on your right.

RAFTING AND KAYAKING The Wenatchee River at the foothills of the towering Cascades reflects all the land around it, extreme and powerful in some areas, smooth and placid in others. Rafting season runs from April to October. For those look-

ing for a thrilling adventure, the snow pack runoff ramps up the river’s water volume providing thrilling white water rafting adventures with class II, III and IV rapids. Water levels even out during the summer and the Wenatchee River offers a smoother ride. From mid-July to October local outfitters offer Class III rafting trips and scenic, educational journey and recommendations for the family who are looking to enjoy a relaxing day. Folks can also watch wildlife during their journey. Inflatable kayak journeys are available from mid-July through September, though many outfitters request payment and reservations 30 days in advance. Inexperienced rafters who are unfamiliar with the area, may want to visit one of the outfitting companies before tackling a river. We recommend Osprey Rafting Company. A local company that offers Class IV rapids in their private high adventure put in on the Wenatchee River in Leavenworth. Established in 1991, Osprey has been Leavenworth’s hometown rafting company for over 25 years and takes great pride

ROCK CLIMBING Washington state is renowned for its vast, and excellent rock climbing options. The Leavenworth area will provide climbers a plethora of opportunities to test their skills and reach new heights. One of the more well known climbing areas is the Peshatin Pinnacles State Park a couple of miles outside of Leavenworth on U.S. Highway 2. Climbers can also find new heights as they travel Icicle Canyon. Some climbs have safety systems already in place. Contact the ranger station and local outdoor sport outfitters about climbing conditions in the Upper Valley, as well as updated conditions, supplies and rock climbing guide books.

LEAVENWORTH ZIPLINES Folks can travel to Leavenworth Ziplines at the Mountain Springs Lodge just 20 minutes away from Leavenworth. The lodge has a rich history dating back to 1895 when owner W.W. Burgess bought Beaver Valley from its first homesteader, John Matthews. The ziplines will take you through the trees, across Beaver Creek Valley and through a gorgeous landscape.
