The story began in the 1960â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when a group of local residents mortgaged everything to save their town from the depression of a declining lumber and railroad economy. They re-created their tiny mountain home building it into a Bavarian Village focused on tourism. The vision of those early dreamers worked to create what has become Washingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest tourist attraction. Today, this tiny village of Leavenworth entertains millions from around the world. Today the entrepreneurial spirit that captured the magic of economic renewal continues

as the community regularly reinvents itself. The old world Bavarian theme is still alive but every year finds new events and activities. Life is always entertaining in Leavenworth

eavenworth is more than just picture postcard perfect. Besides its magnificent alpine setting and charming old world architecture the community works every day to make your visit an occasion to remember.

That is why once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve experienced the magic you want to return. Friendly residents often dressed in Bavarian costume are always willing to teach you how to do the Chicken Dance or just give directions. Everything in downtown Leavenworth is close and Park Strasse (Front Street-all downtown streets have English and German names) in front of the Gazebo is the center of activities. The street is usually crowded and during festival weekends is often shut down to vehicular traffic. With the wide variety of events and educational experiences there is always something for every member of the family to enjoy. The two largest festivals of the year occur 8

in the fall with Oktoberfest and Christmas lighting. Parking is often a challenge during these heavily attended events and just getting into town for the Christmas Lighting ceremony requires an early start.

The Festival that started it all!

he Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival was the very first event developed to draw visitors to the little tourist town of Leavenworth. Now in its fifty-sixth year the Autumn Leaf Festival Association travels to other community festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest to invite those other communities to come and enjoy the magic of the Bavarian Village. The Autumn Leaf Festival entry in all of the other community parades it attends is unique in its energy and enthusiasm. In keeping with the “changing of the seasons” the community chooses a mature woman each year to be the Royal representative. The “Royal Lady” is featured on the community float and serves as the ambassador at other community festivals from Portland to Vancouver, BC and Spokane to Seattle.

Joining the Royal Lady in all of these festivals is a group of Autumn Leaf and Royal Bavarian members dressed in traditional Bavarian Trachten who walk with the float and entertain the crowds along the way with the classic “chicken dance.” It is a silly little thing that always causes smiles and often brings spectators to their feet to join in the fun. The Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival is the last festival of the Northwest Festival season. It always occurs on the last full weekend of September. Northwest Festival members from all over the Pacific Northwest as well as many non-member festivals love to come to Leavenworth making the parade a colorful representation of the communities, both large and small, that make up this vibrant region. High School bands are also big at Autumn Leaf. For many of these schools it is the first outing of the school year. Many of those who have come to Leavenworth to enjoy the changing of the seasons consider the Autumn Leaf Festival the best event of the year and have made it an annual “must do” event.

HISTORY

The story of Leavenworth’s first 100 years starts and ends with Icicle Ridge and the towering mountain range that shelters the town. The majestic landscape has remained the only constant. Its beauty and abundance drew in eras of eclectic characters who reinvented Leavenworth time and time again. THE EARLY YEARS, MID-1800S The great salmon runs brought thousands of American Indians from all around the inland Northwest to harvest these fish. The confluence of the Wenatchee and Icicle Rivers became a popular place to gather. These gatherings lasted weeks and included ritual dancing, trade, stories and contests. The P’squosa, or Wenatchi, as the white settlers called them, were the primary people to inhabit the area. Mining brought an influx of settlers after gold was discovered in the Blewett Pass area in 1860. Of the hundreds of mines “The Hummingbird” continued production until 1975. The mining camps housed miners of all nationalities including Irish, Scandinavian, Chinese, German and English. Those in the camps depended on a small settlement in the valley, present-day Leavenworth, for shipping, supplies and liquor. The settlement was named Icicle, from the American Indian word “nasikelt” or “narrowbottom canyon.”

RAILROAD, LUMBER BOOM, 1890-1920S The first route across Stevens Pass was built by The Great Northern Railway Company (GNRC) in 1892. That same year a townsite was developed across the river from Icicle and was named Leavenworth. It was named for Captain Charles F. Leavenworth, president of the Okanogan Investment Company, who purchased the land which is present-day downtown. The railroad was completed in the dead of winter 1893. It was the valley’s first connection to the west coast and everything east. Leavenworth became railroad

central. Seven sets of tracks were laid downtown where U.S. Highway 2 is now. GNRC also built a roundhouse for turning engines where the present-day Enzian Inn is located. The riverfront at Enchantment Park was the staging point for the area’s second biggest industry, timber. LaFayette and Chauncery Lamb, brothers from Iowa, arrived in 1903 to build the state’s second largest sawmill. The Lamb-Davis Lumber Company brought in a $2 million fortune after two years of business. At one point the company employed more than 1,000 men. At the turn of the century, Leavenworth’s streets were abuzz with saloons, brothels, a general store, a school and an opera house. The town’s newspaper was founded in 1904 by Deed Mayer a real estate agent. The town was lawless until Mayer championed a movement to incorporate the town and in 1906 the city government and sheriff’s office were established. Newspaper editor and real estate agent Deed became Mayor Mayer, the town’s first mayor. The area’s population exploded to eight times its original number, from 300 in 1900 to 2,500 in 1915, which is approximately the population in Leavenworth today. Between 1910 and 1920, the first hospital, library, cemetery, orchard, modern water system and irrigation district were created.

INDUSTRY LEAVES, DEPRESSION SETS IN 1920S-1960S In 1925 the GNRC announced its plans to relocate its headquarters to Wenatchee and move its tracks away from Tumwater Canyon’s dangerous avalanches through Chumstick Canyon instead. The

Others also began to facilitate the change. Townsfolk began Project LIFE (Leavenworth Improvement for Everyone) dedicated to create a community plan of action. In 1964 the Vesta Junior Women’s Club of Leavenworth won a $10,000 national prize for improvements in Leavenworth. Then on a summer evening in 1965 at the Tumwater Inn, the Project LIFE committees unanimously agreed to “go alpine” and officially commit to a Bavarian theme and by 1968, 14 buildings had been remodeled. With that and savvy promotions by Leavenworth residents new attention was drawn and the town was on its way to becoming a major tourism destination. LIFE brought new vitality and purpose without coercion and without government aid prompting many to describe Leavenworth as the “Miracle Town”. Leavenworth area residents enjoyed lighting the Christmas tree in the City Park and also baseball leagues, town dances and church events. A group of Norwegian settlers built a toboggan run and a ski jump in the late ’20s. Skiing became the new buzz in town, bolstered by the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club established in 1929. Spectators in waves of 10,000 a weekend came to watch the international jumping competition. By the mid-1970s the competition ended when international ski jumping standards changed and modern equipment made the local ski jump too short to safely complete the landing.

nce considered the Apple Capital of the World, North Central Washington is rapidly developing into a world class wine region. Serene vineyards have replaced many orchards that now produce an amazing variety of wines from award winning cabernets and merlots to Chardonnays and Rieslings.

In Chelan County and the Upper Valley that includes Leavenworth there are now over 40 wineries, tasting rooms and vineyards. Valley wine makers experiment with both white and red varieties with equal curiosity and passion. It’s still too early to say which kinds of wine will establish a reputation in our region. Each variety continues to garner awards and high marks at wine competitions all over the world. Historically, this region has always grown grapes. But with the explosive growth in the industry. Wine tastings are scheduled year-round and many wineries are open seven days a week. The most popular times to tour the vineyards are in early summer when the buds begin to break and late summer when the grapes are at their fullest. But you won’t want to miss the wine stomping during the fall crush period. Of course, wineries aren’t the only agricultural attraction. Before vineyards this area was already known for its tree fruit. Apples, Pears and Cherry 14

orchards dominated the agricultural landscape. Today, the Leavenworth area is the largest exporter of organic pears The Wenatchee Valley is still a major player in the production of apples and pears. Exports compete with places like New Zealand and Chile for an ever expanding market now reaching places like the People’s Republic of China and Japan. The original Red Delicious Apple that made our region famous is still considered a delicacy in China and Japan. Here at home, however, local growers have diversified their crops to produce a wide variety including a few varieties that were developed right here by innovative local growers. Another unique and popular fruit product, Aplets and Cotlets candy, is made right here in the valley. This world famous fruit candy is made in a broad variety of styles and flavors. Tours of the factory in Cashmere are open to the public. LEAVENWORTH VILLAGE VOICES Leavenworthvillagevoices. org The Leavenworth Village Voices is a nonprofit community choir founded in 1982. Our members have a passion for singing, sharing the joy of music, and contributing to Leavenworth's Bavarian theme and festive atmosphere. Our mission is to enrich our community and the visitor experience by promoting choral music and traditional Bavarian songs, while providing an opportunity for locals to sing in a professionally-directed chorus. Dressed in traditional Trachten (German attire), the choir performs primarily during the Christmas season.
