THE HALLMARK OF UNIQUE DESIGN

The hallmark of

unique design

In between seasons and during winter we naturally spend more time indoors. The more thought given to functional and practical interior spaces, the more time spent enjoying company and utilising the space creatively. Interior designers are like keepers of your home – gaining access alongside you or when you can’t, to deal with trades, measure and calculate, drop off samples and more. This gesture of trust and confidence is especially appreciated by professionals and the time-poor who can’t escape the workplace to attend to design decisions and would prefer to use their weekends in other ways. Specialists in interior design for more than 20 years, Frobisher Interiors is genuinely committed to understanding what its clients seek from both their interior spaces and the designers entrusted to deliver them. Between Frobisher’s comprehensive design services, online store, retail shop and Espressory, its designers have collaborated with a broad range of clients, many longstanding, from farmers, professionals, building companies, new home builders, architects, commercial aged care and more.

30 | B&R www.buildandrenovate.co.nz “It’s not all about selling a product or service, it’s about an experience, a relationship that can be long or short,” says Frobisher Interiors creative director, Ann-Marie Appleton. “Yes, we have unique pieces in our show room and we can design a custom one-off, or we can access thousands of suppliers and manufacturers globally, but a lot of clients want to be involved in the process, time permitting. “They want to feel confident and that they have been heard. They want to know that final decisions made are based on professionalism and experience. “They want a stress-free experience and a great relationship with their interior architect or interior designer. “With that said, clients can often be overwhelmed by the responsibility of design decisions. Frobisher’s designers help to simplify the process for them.“ A good interior designer can recognise immediately how a change of design can transform a room, whether it’s too dark, too bright, too cluttered, over or under scale. “

Trending in 2020 “Classic Blue is the Pantone colour of 2020. So many people will find this easy to use and work with, whether it’s applied as a paint colour or fabric – team with terracotta or a dusky pink,” Ann-Marie says. “Natural materials such as rattan, linen, solid wood, bamboo and stone will be more ‘considered’ design purchases over manmade products.” Wallpapered ceilings – you read that correctly – while recently only seen in American WC and powder rooms, expect that people will get braver and install wallpaper in bedrooms and living rooms for a huge statement and contrast. A more versatile form of warm flooring, floor rugs are being mixed old with new, cheap and expensive, to create works of art on the floor that can be easily interchanged for a freshened look. At first, designers help clients to decide on the best exterior details for their building within its environment – colours, materials, joinery and more. Once that’s locked in, the interior colours are chosen in accord with what was chosen for the exterior. The way you feel within a space hugely influences your broader moods and feelings. “A good interior designer can recognise immediately how a change of design can transform Interiors

a room, whether it’s too dark, too bright, too cluttered, over or under scale,” Ann-Marie says. It’s hard to put a monetary value on interior design. It could simply be a new paint colour applied to the walls, increasing or updating your light fixtures, getting some new furniture, bed linen, curtains or blinds – but an impartial, professional opinion is always received well. “We’re very lucky to have some amazing clients who return to

us time after time, house after house,” Ann-Marie says. “We’ve done holiday homes, horse floats, show homes and specialist care homes. “This shows me that we have a very special relationship with our clients – they trust us, they feel comfortable asking questions, sharing their thoughts and opinions, they trust the design process – whether it’s a one to one selecting upholstery to recover a favourite armchair, or it’s with a larger team of professionals and trades, it’s a unique design, inspired together.”

Outside life

This contemporary construction takes its cue from the timeless architecture of Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson. It’s the second of two complementary designs built on a large waterfront property in Auckland. The modernist design champions honest, practical use of a simple palette of materials. Steel, concrete, timber and glass have been subtly integrated into the whole. Such a seamless finish belies the degree of detailing and workmanship undertaken. Floor-to-ceiling glass opens the 475sqm interior to views over East Tamaki and Mt Wellington to the city. Alfresco living includes a stunning outdoor kitchen and dining space. Five bedrooms, four bathrooms and two living spaces offer luxury and flexibility inside.

Two distinctly expressed horizontal slabs form the floors and roof, sandwiching the open living spaces. The concrete walls are off-the-shutter concrete while the floating facades are hookseam aluminium. This innovative design, including the eco-friendly building materials and technologies used, sets new standards for sustainability. But it was the commitment to outdoor living – stunning views over the elevated pool, outdoor dining and sit-up bar with open fire and outdoor kitchen – that impressed the judges so much, the build scooped the National Outdoor Award at the 2019 RMB House of the Year Awards.

A dream venue

Christchurch’s new convention centre looks set to make a significant impression on the region’s conference hosting abilities.

The Centre will be capable of hosting up to 2,000 delegates for a variety of national and international events. It will include a 1,400-delegate auditorium, a 3,600sqm exhibition hall and 1,600sqm of meeting rooms overlooking Victoria Square. The main entrance to the Centre opens out to Oxford Terrace and the Avon River and has been designed to reflect the fluid curves of Canterbury’s braided rivers. This gives visitors easy access to Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct and creates a space for civic powhiri and welcoming events. The Armagh and Colombo Street sides are straighter to reinforce the traditional edges of Victoria Square and Cathedral Square, and to tie in with the restored Lady Isaac building. The Colombo Street side will be lined with hospitality and retail outlets and space has been created for the potential construction of a hotel that would further increase the level of activity around Cathedral Square. Armagh Street will include areas for public use designed to encourage people to linger and enjoy the view of Victoria Square. Estimates put the direct economic benefit of the Convention Centre to the Canterbury region at $300m to $400m in its first eight years of operation.
