Guangzhou Liwan Planning Department announced two winning schemes for the Guangzhou Huadi Fangcun Sustainable Masterplan Competition: Scheme 1: West 8 urban design & landscape architecture Scheme 2: GZPI; Rainer Schmidt Landscape Architects (RSLA). Guangzhou Huadi Fangcun (Flower City), located in southern China, is a former delta landscape with a traditional horticultural legacy. With speedy expansion of the horticultural industry, the current scattered and disorganised land use of the area is detrimental to the environment, and ecosystems are severely polluted. The Guangzhou government is in search of a sustainable solution to the current problem in this era of rapid urban development. The plan encompasses a site of 2,050 hectares (20.5 square kilometres), with more than 450 hectares of wetland area.

The overall concept by GZPI/RSLA derives from the form and character

of the dominant elements of flowers and water. The proposal incorporates artificial and natural wetlands to control flood patterns and intensity.

Humboldt Forum, Berlin The Berlin-based landscape architects bbz landschaftsarchitekten won the Humboldt Forum competition for the area around the controversial reconstruction of the Berliner Stadtschloss. The jury commended the winning proposal for approaching the site’s heritage in a contemporary way and for forging a link with the adjacent pleasure gardens. The project splits the embankment of the Spree River into two levels, the Spree balcony and

the river promenade. Two ramps and steps connect both levels. Raised beds of herbaceous perennials to the north and outside the Humboldt Forum are reminiscent of the former palace terraces. The slab paving material is continued across to the pleasure gardens opposite. The second prize went to WES GbR LandschaftsArchitektur and Hans-Hermann Krafft from Berlin. Lützow 7 from Berlin won third prize.

Elkiær + Ebbeskov Arkitekter have won first prize in the Suburbs of the Future Competition with their proposal “Grow Your City”. The idea is not to reinvent the suburbs from scratch, but the designers believe that if it is possible to identify their existing strengths and exceptional features, the areas sometimes referred to as the “fringes” may have the potential to become the “cutting edge”. The design describes a modern area of suburban cultivation – the “Growth Zone” (Vækstzonen) – as a new residential quarter in the town of Nykøbing Falster. Its underlying notion is based on the broad links sweeping from countryside to seaside and on into the close-grained structure of the Danish fields and farmlands. People living in Nykøbing Falster’s Suburb of the Future will show, quite literally, that they want their town to grow – because without involved, committed citizens the suburbs will wither away. Cultivating edible plants is an essential part of the strategy, and the key components are community, cooperation and countryside. The Suburbs of the Future Competition aims to initiate debate and formulate visions for a future sustainable development of the Danish suburbs. Among Danish citizens, the suburbs are popular places to live, but there is a need to make the suburbs more sustainable. The campaign includes architecture competitions in the cities of Aalborg, Albertslund, Furesø, Glostrup, Nykøbing-Falster and Vejle. All six competitions have been completed and are now b eing prepared for public exhibition in the summer of 2013.

Green Wall Infrastructure in China The Chinese 3-North Shelterbelt Program is the largest afforestation program in the world, extending across over 40 percent of the country. The project is being recommended as the most effective strategy to combat desertification and dust storms. At this scale, planting is certain to have extensive effects on both the local territory and the region. A critical view on a complex landscape issue.

The Tarim Desert Highway crosses the Taklamakan desert for 550 kilometers. It was built to access the region’s vast oil reserves. The single species shelterbelts planted under the auspices of the 3-North Shelterbelt Program protect the road from encroaching sand.

There is a relationship between local legends and the landscape they originate from. This project is based on a holistic approach to sustain ability, where culture, nature and economy come together in an attempt to develop a distinctive method of rural development.
