TIPS FOR GREAT EXPERIENCES
3
Pedal-powered railbikes
1
Swimming in Markaryd
There are plenty of opportunities for swimming both indoors and outdoors. If you prefer to swim in a pool, you can choose between our indoor facility at Hannabadet in Markaryd, where there is a pool, play area, bubble pool, etc, and our outdoor facility at Strömsnäsbadet, where there are three pools for both adults and children. If you prefer lake swimming, there are several excellent spots to choose from. At Lake Hammarsjön is the popular Klinabadet facility and in Markaryd you can swim in Lake Getesjön and Lake Hannabadsjön.
2
Cultural Centre
You will find Kulturhuset – the Culture Centre – in central Markaryd. It offers a wide programme of cultural activities including films, concerts, lectures and art exhibitions. There is also a library with sections for both adults and children.
112
The engine sheds at Strömsnäsbruk are open to railway enthusiasts and a popular activity, especially in the summer, is to take a trip on a pedal-powered railbike or draisine. This is a completely environmentally friendly and very different way of getting closer to nature.
4 Picture: Pdl Group
Padel – new this year! Next to the bowling hall in central Markaryd, two outdoor courts for padel will be opened this summer.
5 6
Lakeside walks
There are many fine walking trails in Markaryd and a very beautiful and popular one is the Sjörundorna trail that takes you round Lake Byasjön and Lake Lokasjön. It comprises four different walks, from one to six kilometres long, depending on the route chosen. The trails are equipped with information boards, barbecue sites and wind shelters.
7
Go fishing!
Moose safari
Smålandet is a popular tourist destination offering Markaryd’s very own moose safari. Along a three-kilometer-long winding forest road, visitors can experience close-up encounters with the king of the forest and even with American bison. It is possible to drive around the park in your own car but travelling by the destination’s own train is an experience in itself. Smålandet also has a souvenir shop, a café and a newly built restaurant.
Close to Markaryd there are a number of lakes offering excellent fishing opportunities. A fishing licence is required and can be purchased at the COOP in central Markaryd or at www.ifiske.se
The Traryds Skans Zoo
8
In the northern part of the Municipality of Markaryd lies Traryd. There is a zoo here where all different kinds of farm animals can be seen. You can also have a barbecue or walk round the small lake next to the park.
9 10 Herrgårdstoppen
Strömsnäbruk is where Lindvall’s sausages are manufactured and they are served both at IKEA and almost every roadside restaurant throughout the country. This is also where chocolate coconut balls and chocolate tops, so-called Herrgårdstoppar, are made. Production takes place at the Herrgårdstoppen factory, which also has a shop. Here you will find everything from loose sweets, soda drinks, ice-cream and snacks to gift items and souvenirs.
Teashop and country café
If you would like a coffee break and want to enjoy a typical Småland countryside atmosphere, then we can recommend Gräddhyllan Lantcafé and Stockhultgårdens Tebod. Gräddhyllan Lantcafé, with its fantastic selection of homemade fare, is located in an attractive setting close to the River Lagan with a view across Lake Tånnerydsdammen. Stockhultgårdens Tebod is beautifully situated in a forest clearing. Here, in a quaint little shop in the old farmhouse, you can choose from more than 160 types of tea, which can be enjoyed with one of their famous buns. If you want to stay overnight, there are bed & breakfast facilities.

Gate Sven a man with a tragic destiny This is the sad story about a man who had no easy life on earth and for whom things turned even worse after his death! Sven Pettersson, known as Gate Sven, was born in poverty in May 1817 in the village of Gräsholma on the River Lagan. While Sven was still young, he lost three of his siblings, and the clergy complained about the family at the catechetical meetings in the home and considered the children badly behaved. Together with his father and his other siblings, Sven had to witness the burial of his mother after she had drowned herself in the black waters of the River Lagan. A few years later, Sven’s father died of pneumonia leaving the 20-year-old boy alone in charge of his siblings. They all had to struggle to survive in a tough, cold world in which the neighbours spoke ill of the children. In the spring of 1847, some silver trouser buckles disappeared from a farm in the neighbourhood and suspicion was immediately cast on Gate Sven. He was taken into custody by some of the villagers who tried to force him to admit his guilt. He promised to show them where he had hidden the buckles if only they would release him. However, he managed to tear himself away and threw himself into the river to avoid further beatings. The unfortunate man drowned and was washed ashore on a headland beyond the waterfall in Kvarnaholm. According to the priest, he had taken his own life and could therefore not be buried at the cemetery together with his parents and siblings. Instead, he was buried in a gravel bank next to the river. When the farmer Hjalmar Andersson from Bråna quarried gravel here in 1930 he dug up the remains of poor Gate Sven. But he didn’t get a proper funeral this time either. Instead, the skeleton was preserved and used for educational purposes at the municipal secondary school in Strömsnäsbruk. It wasn’t until many years later that the Municipality of Markaryd became aware of the terrible truth and, in November 2013, Sven was eventually buried in the old cemetery in Traryd. At last, he was given a gravestone and a memorial stone was erected in the gravel bank south of Kvarnaholm, where he had been washed ashore 166 years earlier.
The Lagan Route Welcome to the Laganslingan tourist route which extends from Markaryd in the south (motorway exit no. 74) to Strömsnäsbruk (motorway exit no. 76) in the north. In today’s world, things have to move quickly – roads are often only a way of getting from A to B. This road, however, is for those who want to take things easy for a while. Welcome to a trip through both time and space along this 20-kilometre route that used to be one of Sweden’s most important roads, dating back to ancient times.

Exhibition in Markaryd The ‘Experiment’ exhibition will be on display in Markaryd between 1 September 2018 and 28 February 2019. The exhibition is on loan from the Nobel Museum in Stockholm and is the first Nobel exhibition to be displayed outside Stockholm. The exhibition shows how being inquisitive about science, technology and mathematics, together with an entrepreneurial spirit, can change the world. Visitors will be given the opportunity to carry out experiments themselves and who knows – a future Nobel Prize winner might come from Markaryd. School classes throughout Region Kronoberg are invited to visit the exhibition. Members of the public and corporate visitors are also very welcome. The exhibition will be held in premises on Hannabadsvägen (opposite the swimming centre). More information about the exhibition, opening hours, etc. can be found at www.markaryd.com

A fika break is a vital part of life for local residents. Having a break and a cup of coffee or glass of strawberry squash and a cinnamon bun is a simple and relaxing way to hang out with friends, family or work colleagues. A coffee break also provides an excellent opportunity for solving problems and is often used to facilitate tricky negotiations.
