Mission Point Loma Nazarene University exists to provide higher education in a vital Christian community where minds are engaged and challenged, character is modeled and formed, and service is an expression of faith. Being of Wesleyan heritage, we strive to be a learning community where grace is foundational, truth is pursued, and holiness is a way of life.

The life of an academic involves three major areas of work; teaching, scholarship, and service. I am excited to invite you to browse through this report to give you an appreciation of how our faculty in the College of Arts & Humanities are engaging in these important areas of work. Like many universities, we use the Boyer model for scholarship, which includes the scholarship of discovery, application, integration, and teaching/learning. The quality of each type of scholarship is typically judged in a rigorous manner by a community of peers within the related disciplinary fields of research, application, or performance. Most faculty members will not engage in every type of scholarship, but each is vitally important for the life of the college. This continued activity keeps them current in their areas of expertise and encourages their growth as lifelong learners. Each type of scholarship that faculty members participate in can also offer various benefits to the students who interact with these professors, either through direct engagement with a faculty mentor in a community of scholars or indirectly by learning through intentional educational opportunities informed by more experienced faculty members’ scholarship. I commend to you the great variety and the high quality of the scholarship represented by members of the College of Arts & Humanities in this report, but more importantly, the outstanding faculty members themselves who are represented within its pages.
