earest Members, So, the original family members Club has made it to 10 – we are officially double digits! This milestone has made us all nostalgic and extremely thankful to all the amazing people that have helped us along this crazy journey. It has certainly been a ride, starting way back in 2006 with a tin of Farrow & Ball paint and an M&S interest free credit card – oh and the bonus of no idea whatsoever in how to run a business! I, Maggie, am not sure that I intended it to grow so much…it was in essence a selfish need to have somewhere to belong in the isolation of new motherhood. Our growth is purely down to the memories we have created for so many families over the years. We have been there for 1st birthdays to 40th’s and all the ones in between, welcomed newbies to London who don’t know anyone, first

steps, first words, first contractions, got kids to eat things

parents didn’t believe we could, had their artwork displayed at the Saatchi gallery, even had kids named after us!! The list goes on and on – like a trusted family home we have been there for the good and the bad and we are blessed to have created something that so many of you love and treasure. No business is perfect and it has been a bumpy road at times, but we are truly thankful to have been a part of thousands (yep, thousands!) of children’s lives over the past 10 years. We are thrilled that all you past and present M&R’ers are taking a walk down memory lane and indulging in our nostalgic special birthday edit of the magazine with us. Don’t forget to flip us over to The Kid’s Edit – where the gang are celebrating for themselves – although how have they not aged a day in 10 years??

ONCE UPON A TIMELINE or those of us who have had kids, and been lucky enough to discover Maggie & Rose, it’s hard to imagine (a totally sane) life without them. Sure, there are plenty of other fun things to do en famille - but these guys make things that bit - okay, a LOT - rosier. So how did the original and coolest club for families come to fruition?

F

Summer Litchfield charts the highs, sighs and rise of Maggie & Rose. stereotype of soft play or a drafty church hall - somewhere that bred magical memories, rather than dismal ones.

2006 Maggie meets Rose in April and it was, as they say, love. Partly because they are both passionate about working for themselves, and because they are both on a mission to offer something that challenges the traditional idea of ‘family fun’ . New Zealander Maggie - at the time mother to three kids under 4yrs - had just started running creative classes for toddlers and Rose - formerly an actor’s agent - ran Busy Kids London, offering mini film classes for school children. They start working on a concept that defied the

In September they open their first premises in a little cobbled street called Albert Mews. Maggie and Belles teach the classes, Rose runs the business side of things and they all, on occasion, play the role of party entertainer.

Anna (these days in charge of Design & Development) joins the team and they focus on developing the now legendary programme of unique classes that are all about learning through play: cooking and art sessions that kids can really get stuck into, and other delights such as Dress Up and Dance and Make & Make Believe, which are still going strong today.

It is at Pembroke Road that the model for the clubs really begins to take shape. With its calming neutral colours, reclaimed and upcycled furniture and healthy home cooked food it sets a new benchmark for modern family spaces.

The quirky little studio and inspiring classes become so hugely popular that with the help of architect and father of three Alex Michaelis of Michaelis Boyd, they find another site on Pembroke Road in Kensington and open in September the same month that Rose has her first baby, Grace.

2009 - 2011 Rose has two more children in quick succession and moves to Oxfordshire while Maggie takes over the running of the company as CEO. With their Kensington club going strong, the girls invest time in organising a huge event for children’s charity Starlight at the Saatchi Gallery. They manage to raise £150,000! Maggie’s husband Sean (Mr Maggie) throws in his day job and joins the company to get it growing. They publish activity books with Walker – ‘This Book is Totally Rubbish’ and ‘This Book Totally Makes Stuff Grow’ - one is signed off in the delivery room (Maggie fell pregnant with number 4 - oops!)

2012 - 2014 With the pressure now on to expand, they find the perfect property in Chiswick and sign a lease without having funding secured – luckily they raise £2million in 8 weeks! In April 2013, with the help of Lou Davis at Box 9 Design and BB Contracts, they open their Chiswick club. At 12,500sq ft it is more than four times the size of Kensington complete with a Double Decker bus, vast roof terrace, spacious brasserie and daycare in the shape of the Village Nursery. The waiting list, before it even opens, grows to 450; and the club’s capacity is reached almost instantly. The Kensington club undergoes an extensive refurbishment in 2014 to be more in keeping with the Chiswick club’s design.

2015 A visitor comes to one of the London clubs on maternity leave from Hong Kong and decides, as you do, that she needs the concept for her daughter back home. She makes it her mission to help Maggie find the right partners, which they do in Yenn Wong, Natalie Chan and Levina Li-Cadman - all mums and savvy business people. Together they find a stunning beachfront site in the form of The Pulse in Repulse Bay. In just a few months their mission is accomplished and The Beach Club opens. The 9,000sq ft space includes a brasserie, expansive roof terrace with secret garden, stylish soft play area, cookery and art studios and a cinema. Not content with just expanding Clubs, Maggie works closely with an industry mentor and creates her own furniture range of handmade, wooden articles including tables, chairs, dolls houses and train tables – The Maggie & Rose @ Home range is born.

2016 All three clubs are at capacity and with waiting lists. The company is inundated with requests from all over the world to open in their neighbourhood and the message of #everywhereneedsamaggieandrose is spreading. Frankly, it’s anyone’s guess where the next site will be (Club or Nursery), but then that’s what keeps things interesting. Never a dull moment at the coolest kids’ club in the world!

Thank you! We have had an incredible 10yrs and are truly humbled by the love that we have been showered with by the thousands of little cherubs that have passed through our doors. We never imagined that what we started in Albert Mews could quite be what it is today. We are super proud of the incredible team we have grown and our Clubs for our members to create childhood memories that last a lifetime .

n honour of our celebrations, we asked past and present members to fill us in on what makes being a part of the Maggie & Rose family so special….

I

anita & Family “Maggie & Rose has been more than a members club for us...my children have gained so much from the classes. So many wonderful teachers that have thought them so many wonderful things...from encouraging them to say Thank you to the first dance moves, challenging their taste buds, arts and crafts and my favourite Make & Make Believe classes where they truly went on some of the most fantastic journeys”.

12/

Hannah & Family Elnora & Family “My sons love Maggie & Rose and tell all their friends about it. Whenever I have brought in friends who have children they have ended up joining as members. They (and we) are always greeted with such enthusiasm. All the staff are so caring and now Eddie is in school they always ask him how he is doing. I have also hired the roof garden for co rp o r a te events and those have been amazing! Whenever we leave we always feel the boys have had fun, been well cared for and exceptionally well fed! I have to say Maggie & Rose holds a special place for the Terakopian Watts family”.

“Those first few months for Minty doing her many weekly classes are honestly all my favourite memories of that time. Who could forget her making sushi at 18 months old!! I thought it was wonderful and am so grateful for all the opportunities your classes gave her to let her imagination run completely wild. Magical days!!”

Aida & Family

Charlotte & Family “Eddie is so happy there (at the Village Nursery) and clearly loves M&R, the grownups and little friends. It’s such a wonderful mix of fun, play, learning, creativity, music, discipline, warmth and love. Everyone is always so nice to us and parents too and we have so appreciated all of the help, advice and insights. As a working mum I can’t tell you the peace it gives you to know that while you are at work that your little one is having a great day and probably having a better time at nursery than he would be having at home! Actually M&R feels like a more fun packed extension of home. Thank you”.

Vanessa & Family “We became members of the Kensington club when Helena was 2 (she’s now 8). After a show round with Maggie both my husband and I knew instinctively it was the place best suited for Helena’s early childhood experiences. I particularly loved the warm welcome all the staff gave us and it didn’t take many visits until everyone knew us as a family and each of us by name. Maggie & Rose has played a huge part in all of our lives - for the better. It’s formed us as a family and I’m really grateful I was given the chance to be part of the activities when the girls were so young. We miss being at the club so very much and wish that one day they were scattered all over the world”.

“We joined Maggie & Rose when Ziad was about 9 months old. I can easily say it was a pivotal point in our lives. Ziad is now 7 years old and after celebrating practically all his birthdays there, I can’t imagine a world without Maggie & Rose. As a first time parent, living away from family, Maggie & Rose gave me that familiar place to reach out to, whenever motherly doubt kicked in. It’s not just about the classes and the play areas for the children (which are fabulous!), it’s more about the community they allow you to become a part of. We have made some life long friendships through the club. Whether it was help figuring out schools or seeking out children’s activities, the M&R team have always been there. I often tell them that they literally helped me raise Ziad in his early years, as I went back to school full time to get my Masters degree. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and M&R is most definitely mine. Happy 10th Birthday! We look forward to continuing the journey with you!! ”

MAGGIE ON….

WHAT SETS OUR CLASSES APART FROM THE REST… Our brand started with classes, so it’s been vital that these remain the focal point of our brand, 10 years on and looking forward to 20 years later! It was the first experience we had of redefining ‘togetherness’ and encouraging grown-ups to be involved with their little ones, and this has formed the basis for our Club vision. Here, Maggie muses over how it all began and what those foundations have built for today… I remember, when mine where little, buying them toys and giving them to the kids to ‘figure’ out while I ran around doing washing or getting the dinner ready. It only took 10 minutes to sit with them at their level and make believe, encouraging them to use their imaginations and have fun together. And yet there was nowhere that this was encouraged and certainly at the time didn’t seem ‘possible’.

“I

started the whole company on one simple idea: that we had forgotten how to play and enjoy ourselves with our kids. Everything seemed busy and stressful in our lives as parents, and even when spending time with your little ones - you went to a class for 30 mins or so in a church hall somewhere, then shuffled back out into the cold to find somewhere else to go, and by the time you had unbundled, then rebundled and packed up the pram everyone was stressed ten times over!

So I started a little creative class that is now called Make & Make Believe. The whole idea is that for 45 minutes you make and play – simple! With easy-going childhood themes like a teddy bears picnic, to doctors and nurses, to going fishing; we dress up, make believe and play to our hearts content. There are no developmental goals attached to any of our classes – even 14/

though we accidentally ‘teach’ more than most educational programmes do! Our programme was not created by people in an office somewhere trying to prove statistics - instead out of a mother’s love for her kids and her sheer boredom with what else was on offer. Everyone asks if I have an Early Years degree of if I was a teacher…the only qualification I have is I watched what my kids responded to and created classes based on this. We now have a very large repertoire of classes all tried and tested by hundreds of kids and parents and we are lucky enough to have an excellent team of teachers helping deliver them. Many people ask if they are qualified, as there is this obsession with qualifications in the world today. Honestly, the ones who are trained to be teachers cannot deliver our classes as they have been conditioned to teach to government targets and for most their creativity is just not there because they are not allowed to utilise it and think outside the box.

We instead look for artists, musicians, actors, cooks – or just truly passionate people who know how to have a good time. It’s imperative to me that that passion is at the core of all we do and that members feel that with each and every visit they make to us – even 10 years down the line.” Maggie xx 15/

10 YEARS OF COOKING Anyone who has entered our Kensington Club has met the magnificent Belles – our Cooking School Extraordinaire / Matriarch / Food Fairy – whatever you want to call her, she has been ingrained into the Maggie & Rose walls since the very beginning, and here she recalls the journey to date….

“T

he summer prior to starting at Maggie & Rose I had met with the girls and we hatched a plan to create a cooking class for children that would introduce them into the art of cooking - involved in the process of cutting, mixing and most importantly tasting whilst developing their palates and sharing the whole experience with their parent or carer. Maggie and I taught in a small room with one table…I had no hot running water and an old oven which was rarely used, so most dishes were uncooked ones! I used to bring in everything every week for the classes - I was like a travelling salesman. After a year in Gloucester Road we moved to Pembroke Road and finally had a shiny new kitchen with hot water, oven and hob, space and two tables. There the class developed and I have

16/

great memories of sitting in the office brainstorming themes, recipe ideas and names for the classes. We expanded the Little Cheflets classes, introducing themes for a whole term which were all about healthy, delicious family meals and snacks, Super Foods for Superheroes, I can Cook a Rainbow, East vs. West, and Store Cupboard Secrets. As the class became more and more popular the cooking days went from 1 to 5 so new classes needed to be introduced and fast! This is when our cook and craft class was born, with Rhyming Recipes, Cook Up a Story and then came Jellies ‘n’ Wellies (one of my favourites!) and Kitchen Jammin’ - which I must confess when Maggie had the great idea I wondered how it was going to work but like everything, with research, planning and a fabulous play list it become a fabulous class!

Why I think the classes remain popular is due to the fact the food element is masked by fabulous themes and motor skills – i.e. a carrot is not just a carrot, it is a super hero vegetable that makes you see in the dark! I have had many parents coming to me saying ‘my child is so fussy’ and I have always told them to give the class a go. Because we are not forcing the child to eat their dinner or breakfast and instead are asking them to put a digger hand of grated courgette or mashing up a banana it takes away the idea that they have to eat and instead making it an item to play and create with. There is a magic that happens in the cooking school and no matter what age - 12 months to 6 years - the children will try things that they would never try at home - that is why I got the name the Food Fairy!!!

What I love about working for Maggie is she is so creative and imaginative, and having brought up four children has a huge input into all the classes we offer at the Clubs. I have been allowed over the years to experiment with new flavours and surprising the member ssometimes too with my results - avocado cheesecake, beetroot chocolate cake, strawberry pizzas, etc. I clearly love my job as I am still here! Though I gave up teaching last year I am developing the classes behind the scenes and working on lots of new and creative projects. We have come a long way in 10 years and I am so proud of what we have done and how many Little Cheflets we let loose into the outside world to carry on cooking and enjoying food. Belles xx

KENSINGTON

CHISWICK

Hello Kensington Club Families!

Dearest Chiswick Members,

I’d like to introduce myself to you all as I take over the reins as Club Manager. I’m looking forward to steering our little flagship to even greater adventures.

We are so excited to join in the M&R 10 year celebrations here at Chiswick, and we can’t wait to be part of the journey as Maggie & Rose continues to expand. We are now in our 4th year here at Chiswick – thank you for all your support and for bearing with us while we gave the club a facelift recently. After a few licks of paint we are now ready to face the new term!

A little about me (unless you’re interested, feel free to skim!): I’m originally from a tiny village in Newburyport, Massachusetts but lived in the UK for over 16 years of my life and I love London more than any city in the world. Trained in London at Guildhall and Royal Academy of Music I’m coming to you from a theatre background directing, acting as well as running my own theatre company in New York City. (If you listen you’ll invariably catch me singing to myself - just tell me to stop if you don’t like it!) But that’s more or less behind me now. I met Maggie and decided immediately I wanted to become a part of this incredible family. We share a similar passion for aesthetics and a certain theatrical flair and I’m keen to bring you first rate service and 5 star hospitality - you know - underneath all the fun stuff. I truly want to make the club a hub for you as well as for your kids and I invite any suggestions as to how to entice you folks to hang out here more often. I’ll introduce myself to you all as we go along but please do say Hello if you see me. I hope we can have a coffee at some point and get to know each other.

18/

Yours, Keith x

We hope you’ve all enjoyed your summer here at Maggie & Rose. We have had some glorious sunny days up on our roof terrace, and it has been home to some epic water fights, beach ball races and of course, some al fresco pizza parties. We have also had some amazing evening parties and events up on the terrace, with live music, outdoor heaters, and snuggly blankets for when the sun goes down. We have a few new faces around the Club as we have recruited industry experienced senior staff to head up our departments. They will be introducing themselves to you, and can’t wait to meet you all and get to know you. Please do grab them for a chat if you see them – as always, our ears are open for your feedback about what you would like to see in the club in the future. We can’t wait to share the next 3 months with you all!

L ove, Dotty x

BEACH CLUB Dear Members, As the newest ‘Club’ on the block, we are so happy to be a part of this 10 year story, in our first year of operation! It’s so great to see our Club going from strength to strength every month, with new faces joining and continued development of club happenings each month. After expecting summer to be deserted as everyone escapes HK heat and humidity it’s been fab to see so many of our members actually sticking around and making the most of our summer camps and classes. We’ve also been able to launch our partnership with M Yachts for weekend hires, as well as our Beach Ready Hamper & equipment hire to make those trips to the seaside as hassle free as possible! We’ll be offering the packages right up until the end of October! As much as I’m loving summer time, I am most excited for the Autumn term to get going as we’re introducing new classes. Also, it won’t be long until we get festive in the Club for the Mid-Autumn Festival with bespoke Maggie & Rose Moon Cakes ready for pre-order soon, followed by Halloween not long after! With lots of fun and events planned in the club over Autumn make sure you check out the Save The Date section so you don’t miss out!
