recipe and it was awesome, the kids loved it and enjoyed trying something out of the ordinary. So I have never doubted again. Being quite a foodie family I have to say the recipes are great, and have been all well received ( except the steak one, which I cooked a bit too rare and was met with cries of “gross”!!! ) really well thought out and balanced, the meat comes from local butchers and looks 100x better than anything you get at the supermarkets. Quantities are spot on and the recipe cards are so well laid out the kids can follow them, babysitters with little culinary knowledge and even my husband ( who

TREBLE REBEL H WE’RE UP ALL NIGHT TO GET CLUCKY... THE HOT NEW KIDS APP ‘HIP HOP HEN’ ot too long ago, I uprooted our family from the bosom of West London to the depths of the Cotswolds’ countryside (the remote middle of an ancient 2000-acre wood, to be precise). We did this for a few reasons but mostly so that our children could grow up building dens, playing with mud and running around with no fear…of being squished by the 94 Bus, picking up cigarette butts to taste, or getting dangerously close to dog poo…but I digress.
N
The rural idyll is just that and delivers all that it promises. However, with Wellies full of water and rain lashing down endlessly, there are times when we need to do something non-parental and the iPad makes an appearance - daily during the holidays and before 7am in emergencies. I’d gone through Peppa’s Party, Dr Seuss and good old Where’s Wally, but when a friend sent me the link to the new Hip Hop Hen, I was immediately smitten. Created by Daisy Harrison, genius headmistress and founder of Miss Daisy’s Nurseries (3 and counting) (www.missdaisysnursery.com)
together with educational researcher and teacher, Sophie Carter, this app has shot to the Number 1 position in iTunes Kids Apps for good reason. The app has beautiful visuals (something we are big on at the Maggie & Rose Village Nursery), appeal for children AND grown ups and pleasant and playful sounds. If your little one is working on his ABC’s and you are trying to – hell, let’s be crazy here – read the Sunday papers (or at the most, flicking through the pictures of Sunday Times Style mag like me), you wont be driven totally mad.
urrah, a new non-dairy drink landed on our desks shortly before Christmas – just in time for hot choc holidays chez Rose. Two out of my three children are dairy intolerant (yawn) and I’m constantly looking for new recipes and brands that cater to their somewhat inconvenient needs. Rebel Kitchen was an instant hit, even for my dairy loving middle child, and all three slurped their way into a choco coma very happily. The drinks are made from coconut milk with no nasties added. The kids’ favourite was the straight up choco milk, closely followed by banana milk. Grace liked a mix of the two. The orange choc milk was lagging in third until I came up with the genius plan (I know) of freezing the little fella into ice cubes. Now orange choc ice cream has a whole new power over the other two. Anyway, we love a rebel at Maggie & Rose and although we dairy herds still delight in a hot milk and cadbury’s combo, Rebel Kitchen will now have a firm place in my fridge (and freezer) too. Rebel Taster Grace adds her own (not quite organic) toppings to Rebel Kitchen Coconut Milks
The first of three series of the app is “ABC flashcards”. It’s a simple concept, easy for children to use. You search for words beginning with each letter and get a star each time you find one. As a bonus, each letter page has an accompanying catchy phonics song. My 4 year-old, Rafe, particularly loved “Freddie frog can frighten his friends, when he’s dressed like a fairy”. To each to his own! The next two apps to be released are Hip Hop Hen ABC Jigsaw (release date Jan 16) and Hip Hop Hen ABC Letter Tracing (release date Jan 30). Peppa, we will always love you, but for the time being our hearts lie with Don Dog and Goldie Gorilla - particularly because she likes gobbling grapes, another one of our favourite pastimes in the country…

be taught and encouraged to switch off through meditation from one subject to the next. This allows the brain to retain more of what is taught in lessons. This school has it right – it is not a hot house, so children are not under immense pressure to achieve from day one.Rather they are encouraged to be free to absorb and enjoy their education. As a result, the school get great marks, even from kids that some would write off. SO as we wait with bated breath to see if O actually gets in, I have been inspired to look at meditation more seriously. ( FYI the school is St James, well worth checking out )

From that experience I signed up to a new app called HEADSPACE, which was started by an ex-Tibetan monk (who is young and fun – not what you would imagine a monk to be at all). Headspace encourages you to take 10 mins a day to unwind, it is super clever and beautifully designed so makes you really want to do this. You sign up for meditation prompts (Take ten program is free), to get you to take 10 mins for 10 days. Andy (the monk)

How is life in the Cracknell household? 01/
We had a manic run-up to Christmas: builders in the house, all the usual kid’s christmas activities to fit in and creating all the content for our Blooming Bunch, so now, everything is feeling much calmer. Thank God.

What do you do to relax and unwind?
I wish…what does that even mean?! My New Year’s resolution is to relax a bit more. I need to start exercising again. A swim or a brief run around the block always does wonders for my mindset. I’m just not very good at making the time.
06/What
is your favourite local restaurant to go to as a family? Our kids are 10, 4 and 2 so eating out can be a pretty stressful experience. There is almost no point spending money in a restaurant to hurry through mouthfuls between picking broccoli off the floor and apologizing for my screaming two-year-old. The most successful meals I’ve had recently are at Maggie&Rose: kids wolf a pizza and then run off to play while I enjoy a salad and a latte in peace!
07/What
about family holidays, slopes or sunloungers? or both?! James had a serious head injury in 2010 whilst cycling so we don’t ski as he can’t really risk another. I’m an ex-competitive swimmer and the kids are very happy in water so we go poolside everytime. Now that I only have one in armbands, I’m almost completely free to read a book. But not quite…
08/You
have recently launched an ante natal course “The Blooming Bunch at Maggie & Rose”, what first inspired this? Can you tell us a bit about it? I’ve been a passionate advocate of positive birth since I had my son 10 years ago. I’ve had three great births after taking control of my options, working out what I wanted and - of course - having a little bit of luck. It breaks my heart every time I hear women talk about traumatic experiences because today’s maternity services make it very difficult for women to get the birth they want - whether that’s a home waterbirth or an elective section. I’ve written and lectured about birth now for a decade but the time was right to turn action into words. Meeting Maggie was my light-bulb moment. We want to create an informative, empowering ante-natal group. I’ve pulled together my ‘dream team’ of experts. It’s a pretty special venture. I’m so proud of it.
What is the hardest part about becoming a mother, what top tips could you give to expecting mothers? 09/
The hardest is normally the change of identity: who am I now? Especially if you had a job you loved – that shift of priorities and isolation can be overwhelming. Throw in sleep deprivation and you’ve got a unique cocktail of potential misery! You make all the major adjustments with baby number one: the lack of spontaneity or lie-ins. And of course, it can play hell with your relationship. Of course, joining a good ante-natal group is invaluable for information as much as friendship (but then I would say that!)
What are your top pearls of wisdom you would pass on to your own children? 10/
I love the quote: ‘Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change what I can and the wisdom to know the difference.’ It’s a very liberating concept. And also that there are few things that can’t be solved by a good cup of tea and a laugh with your mates.

pottering in The Perfect Puglia Travel
Guru...
Hankering for a hip hotel this half term? We asked Tamara Heber-Percy, co founder of Mr & Mrs Smith, to recommend the best deals for a half term break en famille.
Italy is one of my favourite places – you can’t beat it as the ultimate place for family-friendly fun and you’ll be warmly welcomed, even if your normally perfect offspring are displaying signs of mini-break mischief. Village resort Borgo Egnazia takes all of the hard work out of travelling with children: it has so much entertainment on offer that it makes for a brilliant break (expect to get sociable with the staff when you play football or take a group trip to a local farm). Interiors are stylish with a pleasing rural touch and the various bars and restaurants offer the perfect respite when you leave the little ‘uns in the top-notch kids club for an hour or two.
Offer: Combine your half-term break with a bit of grown-up
indulgence by booking the ‘Tee off and relax’ two-night golfand-spa offer, from £193.94 per night; it’s valid for stays until 30 March, 2014. (Offer includes breakfast, unlimited greens fees and a golf cart for one guest, a special-edition Aquann private flotation session for one, a room upgrade and late check-out on availability, plus 10 per cent off food and drink.)
Clamour for Cornwall If you’re looking for something a little closer to home, I’m a
big fan of the South Coast. There’s little better than a Cornish escape, whatever the weather. The St Moritz Hotel is art deco in style and has airy family-friendly suites – many have sea views, which are wonderful to wake up to. There’s plenty to do, too, with both an indoor and outdoor pool, a Cowshed spa and, of course, plenty of beaches just a pebble-skim away. The hotel runs two children’s programmes during the school holidays and half term, with a free kids club from 3pm each day: young guests can enjoy anything from treasure hunts to arts and crafts.
Offer: From now until 1 April,
2014, you can book three nights for the price of two, with rates from £80 per night with a minimum stay of three nights; breakfast and a his-andhers Cowshed travel set are included.
Smith & Family match best available rates at every hotel and offer loyalty money back on every booking. To plan your family holiday, call the 24/7 expert Travel Team on 0845 313 9007 or visit Smithandfamily.co.uk
