The Windsor Story

I

t’s a retailing miracle, really. By the numbers, impossible. A four showcase jewelry store in Augusta, Georgia grows to become one of National Jeweler Magazine’s Top Ten Independent Jewelers In America, and today extends its brand to Charlotte, North Carolina, to a revitalization of the great Friedman’s Jewelers name, and to a fleet of recreational vehicles designed to take gold and jewelry recycling to a new level of convenience. ALL THIS FROM FOUR SHOWCASES? YES.

The product of a jewelry family, Windsor founder Donnie Thompson acquires the 1975-created Windsor Jewelers and immediately sets about making Windsor the preeminent jeweler in the Aiken-Augusta market. In the 1980s Windsor remodels and moves in to a nearby former bank building, continuing to lure major jewelry talent from across the Southeast. One by one, the world’s marquee jewelry names align themselves with the Windsor name. By the mid 90s Windsor’s growth demands an entirely new two-story, superstore format, and in 1998 the ribbon to nearly 10,000 square feet of dazzling new display space overlooking the Augusta National Golf Club is cut. The new century sees the acquisition of long-time Augusta landmark Doris Diamonds and Charlotte, North Carolina luxury jeweler Lions Jewelers. Mr. Thompson is honored as Retail Jeweler Of The Year by the Southeastern Chapter of the 24 Carat Club, and Windsor’s web site, windsorfinejewelers.com becomes a model for jewelers everywhere, setting an industry benchmark for worry-free ecommerce. Today the brick-and-mortar Windsor Fine Jewelers showcases 13 of the world’s names in timekeeping, joining more than a thousand world-class jewelry and fine gift suppliers to form a roll call of industry legends like Rolex, Roberto Coin, TAG Heuer, David Yurman, Mikimoto, Breitling, Tacori, John Hardy, Pandora and many more. Truly, a retailing miracle. And whatever the future may hold, what will never change are the three constants that have been Windsor’s hallmark since 1975: unrivaled service, unequaled selection and unbeatable savings.

Weddings, the Windsor Way A QUICK GUIDE TO MAKING YOUR PERFECT DAY, PRICELESS!!!

T

he most joyous of occasions is the union of man and woman in celebration of life. It’s a wonderful moment in the life of two individuals but a lot has to take place before the union can become a “hybrid” of one! Planning your momentous day can be very enjoyable or very frustrating depending on your ability to communicate, make wise choices, and stick to an overall sound plan of action. Remember, start early and it’s best if both parties are involved to keep the stress levels low. Our guide will help you narrow down your major decisions by following several quick (but good) guidelines to having a successful day! From picking your wedding dress, photographer, invitations, flowers, etc., we have it all covered. So, keep this guide handy and remember Windsor Fine Jewelers when it’s time to plan that special day. We carry a wide selection of ring styles, bands and diamond cuts; from round brilliants to pear cut diamonds; from classic solitaires to vintage art deco styles; from engraved bands to eternity bands ... we have them all ... It’s the Windsor Way!

If you’re thinking engagement, think Windsor Fine Jewelers.

D E T A I L S THE DRESS

Duchess satin, slipper satin, taffeta, organza, chiffon, douppioni, broderie Anglais, peau de soie. Just the names of wedding dress fabrics sound shimmering and magical. You may have the diamond on your finger and a deposit with the caterer, but you won’t really feel like the bride-to-be until you step out of a dressing room to the tears and cheers of your mother or your best friend.

Some helpful hints: • Floral embroidery and tiny, covered buttons create a delicate, snowy white pattern that plays off flowers in the bridal bouquet. • A thin ribbon or sash around the waist or a lacy hem grazing a pair of sandals can make a gown extraordinary. • Fresh flowers tucked into the hair set off an unstudied wedding look, yet they add an appropriate flourish to a more formal gown. • A veil is often thought of as a traditional accessory, intended to be worn with a classic dress such as boatneck or A-line style. But a sweeping version can lend an exotic touch to a more modern slip dress.

WEDDING PARTY

A good wedding tip to make sure the bridal party stays happy: be sure that all of your attendants eat breakfast or lunch—it could be hours before you get to the reception and have something to eat, and being hungry makes everyone nervous and cranky. When you’re picking out bridesmaid dresses, remember that your friends are on budgets. Even if it’s absolutely gorgeous, don t pick a gown that is going to make it difficult for them to purchase. They’re most likely only going to wear it once, and won’t love you if you pick something that costs two hundred dollars or more, especially considering that they also have to pay for shoes, bridal shower, shower gift, wedding gift, lodging, transportation and more. Don’t forget to pick out a nice bridesmaid gift for your friends as well. Make sure you’re prepared for emergencies on your big day: take along a purse or bag containing items such as Band-Aids, clear nail polish, needle and thread, aspirin, an extra pair of hose, and other things that might come in handy in a pinch. Give them to a bridesmaid to keep for you.

26

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEO

Questions you’ll want to ask: • What packages are offered and how many photos are included in each package? • Are the proofs yours to keep or do you have to purchase them? • What is the cost for additional time or photos? • How much is the deposit and when is it due? • When is the balance due? • Is there a travel charge? • Are the negatives available to purchase and, if so, do you have to wait a specified time before you can purchase them? Start comparative shopping early, insist on viewing samples of the photographers work (from more than one album). To cut costs, enlist family and friends who are shutter bugs. Place disposable cameras on the guests’ tables with a note requesting candid shots. This will help to ensure plentiful wedding photos. When interviewing your prospective videographers, you might want to ask them the following questions: What video format is offered? What are the charges for extra time or tape? Will the videographer have back-up equipment available in the event difficulties are encountered? How many cameras will be covering the events? Can a videographic collage be provided? Is a choice of background music available? Are title screens provided? Does the artist provide lighting, or does he rely only on available light? If friends or family want to purchase copies of the tape, can they, and how much will they cost? These are all of the things that should be asked when choosing wedding videography.

INVITATIONS

A wedding invitation heralds something special. It’s a signal to your friends and family that the day you’ve talked about for months is finally here. Your choice of paper, format, type style, printing method and embellishment will make a first and lasting impression of your wedding. Given the staggering number of possibilities, it’s sometimes hard to know where to start.

Things to consider: • • • • • •

The style of the wedding The setting The season in which it will be held The formality: Black tie or beach attire? Indoors or out? Does your guest list number 200 or is it a more intimate affair?

You should mail your invitations six to eight weeks before the wedding and invitations to the rehearsal dinner two or three weeks after that. Include an RSVP card to help keep track of head count. While many elements of a wedding invitation can vary, including the size, shape, color, weight and material from which it’s made, when it comes to putting ink to paper, these are your four basic options: • Engraving • Letterpress • Offset Lithography • Thermography (Consult with your printer for details)

FLOWERS

CATERING

REHEARSAL DINNER

To cut your wedding flower costs, have the arrangements from your church or other ceremony location moved to the reception location. You’ll get double the use!

When it comes time to give the final number of guests to your caterer, don’t forget to include meals for your DJ/band members, photographer, videographer and wedding consultant (ask them beforehand if they’d like meals). Sometimes the caterer will give you discounts for vendor meals.

At a rehearsal dinner, family and friends toast the couple, the bride and groom can give thank-you gifts to their attendants, and your families can get to know one another better if they haven’t spent much time together prior to the wedding.

Today s best selling wedding flower bouquets epitomize simplistic elegance. Eight bunched calla lilies tied with ribbon are not only economical but stunning. The “rose ball” bouquet is very popular and looks best with only a small amount of greens as an accent to the roses. Tulips dressed in the same fashion are a spring delight. With smaller bouquets and much less need for filler flowers, the savings can really add up.

Consider the traditional meanings behind each wedding flower: • Red Rose - Love; • Yellow Rose - Devotion; • Daisy - Purity; • Gardenia - Joy; • Orchard - Beauty; • Blue Violet - Constancy; • Forget-Me-Not - True Love; • Red Chrysanthemum - Sharing; • Lily of the Valley - Happiness

Be sure to get detailed quotes from your caterer regarding specific food items. This is especially important to remember if you are planning for a wedding that’s more than six months away. Perishable food prices can change; be sure you’re prepared by asking these questions: • Are you guaranteed the price on the food quote or can it change? • Will you be charged more overall if the caterer’s cost of food increases? • How and when would you be notified of a price increase? • Can you make substitutions? • Do you cater full-time? • Do you have any formal training? • How long have you been a caterer? • What is the ratio of staff to guests? • What equipment do you provide? • Are there extra charges for buffet servers, champagne toast, cake cutting, bartenders, etc.? • Can you provide the cake?

If you’re not thrilled about the idea of inviting out of town guests to your rehearsal dinner, but feel guilty not doing so, you might want to consider having your rehearsal dinner two days before your wedding—no guests will have arrived, and you won’t feel guilty for not inviting them. Traditionally it’s the groom’s family who hosts the rehearsal dinner, but in today’s world it can be given by the bride’s family or the couple themselves. Keep your rehearsal dinner light and casual: a barbecue, clambake, pasta supper—anything non-formal that will let you chill out with your guests. If possible, have your dinner two nights ahead instead of the night before ... you’ll have a more relaxing wedding eve, you’ll hopefully get more sleep, and you’ll have the chance to catch your breath before the big day.

If you want wedding flowers for your church but are on a tight budget, focus the flowers on the main point of action: the altar or front of the room. Flowers on the ends of pews are pretty, but everyone’s going to be looking at the altar for the majority of the ceremony.

THE RECEPTION

What can you do to make sure in your Wedding Reception Planning the invited guests not only RSVP but do not bring “additional” guests? Either hire a wedding coordinator or designate a non-family member not known to the guest to call and confirm before you need your final count. Plain champagne is not the only cocktail for a wedding reception; you could try kir royale, mimosas, or champagne framboise (mixed with a dash of raspberry liqueur). These alternatives are much prettier and more festive. Traditionally the head table features the bride and groom in the middle; you can go either with the best man next to the bride and the maid of honor next to the groom (and then boy-girl down both sides), or you can put all the girls on one side and all the guys on the other. If you don’t want to have one big table, you don’t have to—you can have the bride, groom, maid of honor and her date, and best man and his date at one smaller table, and the rest of the attendants and their dates at another table. It’s up to you! The parents, siblings, and grandparents of both couples sit at the table that’s closest to the head table.

THE HONEYMOON

The world is waiting for you! First, sit down with your partner and find out what each of you had in mind for a honeymoon. Do you prefer the mountains, beach, a cruise, a big city spot, or a theme honeymoon such as a Sandals Resort? What you do in your spare time may determine where you go for your honeymoon. Are you the kind of couple who likes to lay out in the sun all day? Or, do the two of you like hiking and participating in extreme sports? Another consideration is the length of time you're allotting for your honeymoon. If you plan to spend two weeks, does the destination you're considering have enough activities to last you? Finances are often a major factor. But these days, traveling can be quite affordable—from seven-day cruises where they upgrade you for being newlyweds, to all-inclusive resorts. • The most popular honeymoon destination in the world is Hawaii. It's perfect for activities or relaxation and couples can stay put or take short flights to different islands. • Mexico is a close second. It's one of the most affordable honeymoon destinations on the planet. • If you're a couple that never sleeps, Las Vegas is a perfect choice. • Want to really explore different parts of the world? You might want to look into a European honeymoon like Paris, France or the Greek Isles.

CLASSIC CUTS

ROUND BRILLIANT (shown below) This shape has set the standard for all other diamond shapes, and accounts for more than 75% of diamonds sold today. Its 58-facet cut, divided among its crown (top), girdle (widest part) and pavilion (base), is calibrated through a precise formula to achieve the maximum in fire and brilliance. EMERALD This is a rectangular shape with cut corners. It is known as a step cut because its concentric, broad, flat planes resemble stair steps. Since inclusions and inferior color are more pronounced in this particular cut, take pains to select a stone of superior clarity and color. MARQUISE An elongated shape with pointed ends, the Marquise cut was inspired by the fetching smile of the Marquise de Pompadour and commissioned by the Sun King, France's Louis XIV. It is gorgeous when used as a solitaire or when enhanced by smaller diamonds. OVAL An even, perfectly symmetrical design is popular among women with small hands or short fingers. Its elongated shape gives a flattering illusion of length to the hand. PEAR (shown above) A hybrid cut, combining the best of the oval and the marquise, it is shaped most like a sparkling teardrop. It also belongs to that category of diamond whose design most complements a hand with small or average -length fingers. It is particularly beautiful for pendants or earrings. HEART This ultimate symbol of romance is essentially a pear-shaped diamond with a cleft at the top. The skill of the cutter determines the beauty of the cut. Look for a stone with an even shape and a well-defined outline.

RING STYLES

WEDDING BANDS

CLASSIC SOLITAIRE While this iconic style may now seem timeless, the custom of a single diamond gracing a metal band really only dates back to the 19th century. While round brilliants are most commonly used for solitaires, any shape of diamond can work in this simple presentation.

PLAIN BAND The basic band, in yellow gold, white gold or platinum, is favored by both minimalists, who love it for its simplicity, and jewelry-loving brides who want a ring that goes with everything. A plain band can have a rounded shape, appear flat or have a bevel, known as knife edged. It can also feature millegraining—tiny beadwork along the top and bottom edges that give an antique look.

SIDE STONES (shown above) This design, which made its mark in the lady-like late 40’s, uses smaller stones to flank the main one, thus flooding it with light and making it sparkle even more. The most traditional version features a round diamond sandwiched by two tapered stones known as baguettes; but emerald-cut center stones and other shapes are also popular. WIDE BAND SOLITAIRE Sleek and modern, this style is ideal for brides who prefer not to stack an engagement ring with a wedding band since it’s strong enough to stand alone. It’s also flattering on women with large hands. And it allows plenty of room for engraving. VINTAGE Whether a delicate, lacy Edwardian design or a glamourous art deco look, vintage rings have recently caught on with brides looking for something different that nevertheless has a whiff of romance about it. MICRO-PAVÉ Invented in Paris about twenty years ago, micro- pavé is a stone-setting technique that involves placing many tiny stones closely together on a ring so that it looks covered with diamonds. The band is usually very thin and the prongs either encircle or are underneath the main stone. Note the resulting ring can be quite fragile. THREE-STONE Symbolizing a couple’s past, present and future, this style is unlike those that display a center stone of roughly the same size and shape (most often round). Three-stone rings have existed for hundreds of years, but the look works for women as stylish and up-to-date. COLORED DIAMONDS Pink and yellow diamonds, also known as fancy colored diamonds, are extremely rare (pink ones are less common than yellow, also known as canaries). Though yellow diamonds have been used in jewelry for 100 years, only recently have they become the IT stone for engagement rings. Even rarer are blue and green diamonds. CREATIVE CONCEPTS A ring that features an unusual design motif, such as a star or vine-shaped setting, intricate engraving, crossover bands, or what’s known as split shank (a band that divides into two with a stone nestled in between), offers an unusual way to announce you’re spoken for. Not only will you wear something that’s yours and yours alone, these styles, which often don’t feature a centerstone, can offer relative value.

ENGRAVED BAND Bands with carving or engraving on the outside can incorporate design motifs— dainty floral ones or sinuous Celtic ones, for instance—or words, initials or phrases, the lettering working as decorative elements as well as bearers of meaning. Consider displaying your initials, your wedding date in Roman numerals, or a few words from a poem that’s meaningful to you as a couple. You’ll have a ring that’s one of a kind. ETERNITY BAND (shown above) In the 1950’s, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn popularized this style, which features diamonds (often channel-set ones) all the way around the band—meant to symbolize endless love. Eternity bands can showcase round, emerald or princess cuts, or even tiny pavé stones. Because they rely on a collection of relatively small diamonds to dazzle, eternity bands can be an affordable alternative to a solitaire. OPENWORK BAND Wide bands with airy filigree and organic motifs that recall antique styles have caught on recently—perhaps because they manage to be both delicate and substantial at once. While often covered with diamonds, creating an enchanting pattern of sparkle and space, the gems usually used are generally small, which means they can give glitter without a big price tag.

John Hardy THE BEDEG COLLECTION

F

irst introduced in Fall 2010, the Bedeg collection celebrates the simple, yet exquisite Indonesian artisanship found in woven bamboo. The pattern of the woven material is used throughout the collection, and is beautifully rendered with modern gleaming lines, creating a stunning statement of textured silver. The Fall 2011 Bedeg collection highlights the art deco style of Rattan furniture, and is embellished with diamond pave, thereby creating a sense of glamour and sparkle. The pieces are lightweight and feminine, and the coil bracelets also create a great layered, chic look.

Eli Jewels COMBINING INTRICATE DETAILING WITH STUNNING SIMPLICITY

E

li Jewels’ colorful history dates back to the Ottoman Empire. Their great, great, great Grandfather established one of the first fine metalworking shops in the ancient city of Antioch. The fine craftsmanship practiced and perfected hundreds of years ago has been passed down through six generations. Today, brothers Simon and Fred are partners. The name Eli honors their father.

Inspired by the intricate metal scrollwork in New Orleans they created beautifully hand engraved bridal styles, which has evolved to seven collections of bridal, each expressing their own look and feel. Our newest collection marries sterling silver and 18k yellow gold, with accents reminiscent of the Etruscan era. The braid work and dramatic finishes are hand applied, and the gemstones and diamonds are of the finest quality. A bold and finely nuanced look at attainable prices.

Timepiece Terminology UNDERSTANDING YOUR FINE TIMEPIECE Fig.1 Aperture - Small opening. The dials of some watches (in French: montres a guichet) have apertures in which certain indications are given (the date, hour, etc.). Fig.2

D E T A I L S

Bezel - The ring which surrounds the watch dial (or face). The bezel is usually made of gold, gold plate or stainless steel. A rotating ratchet bezel moves in some sport watches as part of the timing device. Some rotating bezels are bi-directional, and can assist in calculations for elapsed times. On jewelry watches, the bezel may contain a ring of diamonds. On sports watches, the bezel may have calibrated markings and the ability to rotate in one or both directions. Fig.2

Caliber - The size of a watch movement or the model, style or shape of a watch movement. Chronograph - A watch that includes a built in stopwatch function i.e., a timer that can be started and stopped to time an event. The accuracy of the stopwatch function will commonly vary from 1/5th second to 1/100th second depending on the chronograph. Some chronographs will measure elapsed time up to 24 hours. Watches that include the chronograph function are themselves called “chronographs.” Fig.1

Fig.3

Crown - Also called a stem or pin, a crown is the button on the outside of the watch case that is used to set the time and date. In a mechanical watch the crown also winds the mainspring. In this case it is also called a “winding stem”. Fig.3

Guilloché - A style of intricate engraving that is popular on watch dials, usually very thin lines interwoven to create a surface texture. Horology - The science of time measurement, including the art of designing and constructing timepieces. Tourbillon - A device in a mechanical watch that eliminates timekeeping errors caused by the slight difference in the rates at which a watch runs in the horizontal and vertical positions. A special complication found on only a few very high end mechanical watches that compensates for the effect of gravity.
