Typography II
1. RESEARCH
What did you turn to for reference, inspiration, and understanding for your project? How did it influence— directly or indirectly—what you made?
2. DISCOVERY
What was your process for generating possible ideas for the project? How wide and deep did you explore before coming to a final idea? Did your discovery process generate outcomes that were successful?
3. REFINEMENT
How did you refine your work? How did you make decisions as you refined your idea? What criteria did you use for evaluation? Did you find your final refined idea to be the final iteration of your idea?
4. CRITICISM
What criticism did you receive from your peers and faculty about your project? Did you agree or disagree with it? What did you learn from criticism?

RESEARCH
Typography II
I attempted to find a wide range of sources for this project, and collected samples of standard calendars, event posters, school calendars, and any other multievent layout I could come up with. My goal was to look for general approaches designers used in relating the event’s topic or theme to the way they treated the typography. I looked for relations between color choices, hierarchy, overlap between sides, image use, and many other factors. Seeing the different styles and approaches helped me understand the framework I was working in, and the possibilities for how I could manage the events we were given. During the research stage, I also referenced the given images for the Public Lecture series. Besides just learning about the speakers and their work, I looked for any connecting themes between them. I found that space was a common element, or the attempt to engage three-dimensional space with the work.

Typography II
This view of Lorcan O’Herlihy’s Mariposa 1038 would be the main inspiraiton for my final poster. I was inspired by the rhythm created by both the windows and the shadows, and how it gave dimensionality to a typically flat part of a building

DISCOVERY
Typography II
I began with typographic studies for this project, focusing on finding a style to focus on for my poster. I attempted approaches from two different directions; first, trying to make minimal changes to to create effective hierarchy. Second, I tried more drastic changes and added different styles and visual elements to order the information. Eventually I landed on a balance between these experimentations, and based my later iterations on that single style. For the poster side, I also tried to vary my approaches drastically. I began with several type-focused iterations, and then later took inspiration from the Public Lecture Series’ images. After several trials, I realized I didn’t want a high use of images within my grid system, so I settled on designing my poster around a single work.

Resolved drafts for the discovery stage of my process, reflecting the three main directions I was considering. I decided to go in the direction of the above calendar because there was a greater sense of depth and environment that the vecctorized windows brought in.

REFINEMENT
Typography II
For the typographic side, my iterations generally surrounded three goals: improving legibility, editing down my font styles, and balancing color within the system and within the poster’s overall values. In my final designs, I also clustered the months more closely, spacing them further apart within my grid; my previous iterations struggled with navigating through the information, and this change helped significantly. My poster side, and the related visuals on the type side, went through more drastic changes during refinement. Because my inclusion of O’Herlihy’s building was a common approach, I wanted to differentiate my poster by abstracting the original image into something unique. I took groupings of windows and began creating patterns more random than the original architecture. I also began encasing some letters within the windows, which helped create a more engaging and believable environment. I related the type side by creating more drastic scale shifts between the windows, and changing the hue of the background to imply a sense of movement from the poster side.

CRITICISM
Typography II
While I am overall happy with where my calendar ended up, I think it certainly still has areas for improvement. I think my poster could have benefited from more value contrast, as well as more saturation in the pink hue I used. After comparing my work to others on the wall, I think adding some darker values (or areas with higher contrast) could have created a more intriguing environment overall. In the large-group critique, it was also pointed out that our calendars as a whole did not address our audience well; specifically, “Sam Fox” was not indicative enough of our school for most people to know what we are talking about. I would agree that, during my process, I did not highly consider the outside audience of this calendar—I mainly considered the students and faculty, who know these types of posters well and would appreciate something fresher. If I were to do this project again, I would look at changing my language to incorporate “Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts,” and possibly use imagery that gave a more holistic sense of the events occuring in the fall.
