mile-long art cooperative new york Studio Work Fall 2014 Advisor: Elizabeth Diller

Constructions of new condos have been undergoing everywhere around The High Line, the number of international tourists is way larger than the locals. At the same time, due to the rising real estate price, original artist residents are being driven away. The gentrification process has made high line area a place to consume, not a place to settle down, to live in and to produce something not only vital, but also innovative. If there is a community, it is a community of cultural consumerism. Cultural consumerism is not attempted to be altered here, but to be used as a tool towards a new art institution. The Mile Long Artist Cooperative (MLAC) is an art institution managed by artists themselves, which includes the functions of art production—the studio spaces, art presentation and consumption. It brings back the artist residents and provide them enormous opportunities to be exposed. With the assumption that city government claims the high-line level building adjacencies as the eminent domain, MLAC occupies about 100,000 sqm high-line level floor areas of the adjacent buildings from 19th Street to 30th Street, and has direct accesses to high line. But it is really a starting point and is totally expandable according to how much space the government can claim.

This is a project exploring a new housing typology in the city of Hong Kong. Located in the dramatically sloping site, this housing complex has celebrated the existing high-density living conditions in Hong Kong, yet at the same time introduced a richer and more innovative living/social experience by creating changing sectional relationship. The unified language of twisting from vertical to horizontal has represented rich spatial relationships, including the relationship between the housing and the landscape, as well as the relationship between indoor area and outdoor balcony within one living unit. The continuous horizontal courtyard between upper smaller bars and beneath larger bars has introduced a new sense differentiating from normal skyscrapers. This project also explore on the tectonic aspects. The dramatic form could be achieved by five simple types of prefabricated living units. Every four bars, cantilevered from a sharing central core, providing vertical circulation and mechanical services, generate a relatively isolated building. I hope this experiment could provide more inspirations to the future housing design in Hong Kong.

The central cores not only serve as the structural supports and vertical circulation, but also contain the pipe ducts, the cable ducts, plant rooms and other mechanical services. The truss bars cantilevered by the central core are assembled on site, and the prefabricated living units are put on by cranes. The organization of each unit is defined by the location of the balcony and the location of the entrances---entering from the frond, the back or the middle. These three types are shown in diagrams A, B and C, which will direct the design of the plans discussed following. SMALLER SIZE, SAME ORGANIZATION 6m

Only five types of organization methods are necessary to cover the whole complex. To achieve high efficiency, each functional space, such as kitchen, toilet, living room or bedroom (shown in different colors) are first prefabricated and then put together. Since the larger (9m) units are below the internal atrium, the living room is organized opposite to the balcony to gain more natural light.

PROMENADE HOUSE The Promenade House as a new typology of housing system, marks the circulation ramps as the initial mechanism of the house, from which building structure, mechanical services, envelope and spaces are generated and unified under the same language. As a strategic prototype, instead of a ready-to-built house design, the project exams multiple scales of variations in the design logic, including the scale of a single room, relationships between rooms on the same level, rooms on different levels linked by ramps, the patterns of the ramp, relationships between two ramps and multiple ramps in a landscape context.

Part 1: Relationship+Threshold prototypes This is a conceptual exercise focusing on the propositional analysis on the site, the Astor Place in New York, and unpack the nature of potential relationships between programmatic elements. Graphical definitions of a series of connective thresholds are introduced, between the four components of a modestly scaled transportation access hub: bike share, car share, library outpost, and cafe, which creates the menu of threshold prototypes. These prototypes have established aesthetic/formal directions in order to a range of possible performative aspects of the shared space between the four programs- how these programs will engage each other and the site. Part 2: Intermodal transportation hub The further development of the relationships proposed in part 1 into a complete architectural proposal for a 24/7 intermodal transportation hub. Issues of street connectivity, massing, skin and structure will come together in a conceptual and formal cohesive whole - a new neighborhood mixed-use typology. The different densities of frames indicate different usages according to the sizes of bikes, cars, bookshelves and open cafe areas.

‘industrial forest’ cultural installation hong kong ESKYIU Office Client: Spring Workshop, Hong Kong Completed in 2012 http://eskyiu.com/the-industrial-forest/

“Spring Workshop resides in Wong Chuk Hang, the quintessential post-industrial Hong Kong landscape which is now transforming rapidly into a community of creative inhabitants occupying the factory floors. Comprised of hundreds of incredibly thin metallic bamboo poles, The Industrial Forest acknowledges the origin of Wong Chuk Hang’s heritage by translating the yellow bamboo that used to grow there into a new landscape. Each filament is removable, with the potential to carve out a void from within the dense forest of landscape. Over a series of months the installation will be altered to accept significant crowds or be arranged to restrict access to the site.” --ESKYIU Office

In this project, I worked closely with my employee, and very often independently, on the design development, model making, coordination with contractors and mechanical consultants, and site supervision.

‘movement culture’ cultural installation hong kong

ESKYIU Office Completed in 2013 Photography by Juli Balla http://eskyiu.com/movement-culture/

“ESKYIU was commissioned to create, design and fabricate a stage set and installation back drop for Ido Portal located in the Shaw Studios, Hong Kong. With ESKYIU’s ongoing fascination with surface, boundaries, geometries and movement in three dimensional spaces, this project culminated in the design of a spatial construct that defies the boundaries of fabrication and creative execution. The installation design structure responds to the inspired movement of Ido’s art, trajectories of his body movement and plays with the complexities and lightness of his Movement Culture”. --ESKYIU Office In this project, I designed and determined the form, scale and material with my employee to fulfil the requirements by client. I did several experimental small scale models to test the feasibility of various materials and worked closely with our fabricators in their factories--fabric provider in Hong Kong and steel structure provider in Guangzhou, China.

residential interior hong kong ESKYIU Office Client: Ong Family Under construction

ji’an secondary school ji’an county,china

Rural Urban Framework (conducted in HKU) 2010-2012 Size: 24,000 sqm Total Cost: 3,000,000 usd Unit Cost: 125 usd/sqm http://www.rufwork.org/index.php?/project/02-jian-secondary-schools/

“The Jian county schools are 4 secondary schools with a total of 3,300 students and 1,800 live-in students from nearby rural areas. The design is a school prototype that can be adapted to different program requirements and different site conditions. The initial strategy is to create a perimeter building that frames a large courtyard. This wall, much like a traditional old city wall contains the inner public life of the school. Additional public and social functions of the school such as the library, the canteen, the art block and the administration building, push into this space activating the courtyard.”. --Rural Urban Framework As a summer intern and research assistant at RUF, I contributed to model making, construction drawings and conference translation with local government in this project.
