This pool house was made with the idea of repetitive structures that create the form and program. The program pushes the structure and wraps around it creating double uses for every bend. For example, the bleachers create a space for park seating and shade and the entrance makes space for locker rooms, stairs and a walkway to the offices.

The Schwimmbad (or “Floating Opera) is located in Wuppertal, Germany. It has a central competition pool with bleachers viewing it on the sides. These bleachers and the pool are supported by a structure composed of many beams that have the same shape. This repetition of structure creates its unique form.

The garden tool I chose was the pickaxe. The two sides of a pickaxe has different uses, one to break into rocks and the other to dig up roots. So the thought of the pickaxe digging into the earth and coming out again was the idea I used for the rest of this project.
17
18
From the previous tool project I used the motion of the pickaxe as the basis of my Garden refuge design. Like the pickaxe’s movement, this refuge comes out of the building and comes back into the earth. Its pyramidal shape makes a lack of unnecessary space. It makes the living area more communal and requires the residents to rely on each other to live in peace.

This is a weather station placed at the end of an old boardwalk next to the Holland tunnel. This building records the pattern of waves hitting it by putting metal tubes on tracks in front of the building. When waves hit them the tubes move and hit against the edge of the platform made of metal. This would create a chime-like sound to attract visitors and become a part of the boardwalk aswell.

This weather tool is used as a rain water collector that only collects up to the average amount of rainfall per year. It collects from the highest point and when the first cup fills, it tips over to fill the other cups until it eventually reaches and fills the bottom.

Can Lis is a home designed by Jørn Utzon in 1972. It is located in Mallorca, Spain. The design of this house consists of separate buildings connected by outdoor walkways. It is positioned at the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean. Each part of this house is rotated based on the sun’s rotation and how much light Utzon wanted to enter the rooms.

The Gilardi House is a residence designed by Luis Barragan in 1976. It is located in Tacubaya, Mexico. This house also uses light as a way to affect the spaces inside. Barragan places skylights and cuts windows wherever he wanted the light to hit. To maximize the effect of light he painted some rooms different colors to give them a warm or cool feel.

From the “Path” project I found places where a person can watch, hide, and search. With this section from “Path” I designed a house that would relate to these actions. Spaces that are hidden for hiding, in which a person can search, and from hiding in this house they can come across a stair to where they can watch from a platform.

Path

In this Path project I chose the path to wisdom. A person would start at the center. The darkest area of the model, which is covered by pieces that represent the average life of wanting, and always wanting more until it engulfs a person. There is then a challenging path to the top which is clear and free. Representing the attainment of wisdom.

Threshold

This threshold is a path that connects a closed space to an open space in a cycle of movement. Spaces that seem like opposites but are actually very similar, like opposites in real life.
