JennaRoseDove Magical Girls in the artwork:

Doremi Harukaze, Pop Harukaze, Hazuki Fujiwara, Aiko Senoo, Onpu Segawa, Momoko Asuka, Hana-chan, Majorika, Pao, and their fairies (Ojamajo Doremi Dokkan!) and Hibiki Hojo, Kanade Minamino, Ellen Kurokawa, Ako Shirabe, Hummy, and the fairy tones (Suite Pretty Cure).

Artist Talk:

Ojamajo Doremi is my favorite magical girl series hand down and has been for well over a decade! So I had to include the girls from that series, and thought it’d be nice to include a series I’ve watched in the last year to bring my childhood favorite with a recent fav! I’ve known about Precure almost as long as I’ve been online but only this year have me and some friends decided to watch all of the series! Suite was one that sticked out the most to me so that was the first one I finished and I absolutely loved it! It’s the music themed Precure so I thought drawing both groups having a little jam session together would be fun, this is certainly a big and detailed piece for me but I wanted to get across some of my love for the genre as a whole with this project <3

@stone_Umbrella @stoneumbrella StoneUmbrella

Magical Girls in the artwork: ChibiUsa tsukino(sailor moon) meimi haneoka (saint tail) karin kokubu (tonde buurin) ririka moriya (nurse angel ririka sos) sasami kawai (magical girl pretty sammy)

Artist Talk: Ever since I was a young girl I have always wanted to draw magical girl crossovers because a lot of the characters would get along as friends as they all can share their experiences about fighting and help esch other grow. Or...play cards together.

Magical Girls in the artwork: Anthy Himemiya (Revolutionary Girl Utena) and Homura Akemi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica).

Artist Talk: I really love the flower imagery on Utena and Anthy’s one of my faves from the series! On a rewatch I noticed how much Anthy and Homura ressemble each other not just on the aesthetics (red and purple color code, flower motif, pink-haired girlfriend) but on their personalities too. I think they could really be friends! Magical girl shows mean a lot to me since they are what got me into drawing and manga in general, I could spend hours watching Sailor Moon and CCSakura!!

@SanDoria2000

Magical Girls in the artwork: Usagi Tsukino (Sailer Moon) and Papika (Flip Flappers).

Artist Talk: Sailor Moon was the first magical girl anime I watched and actually also the first manga I’ve bought! Flip Flappers is the last magical girl anime I’ve watched so I thought it might be a fun idea to draw the protagonist of my first and most recent magical girl anime! Flip Flappers is hugely underrated, please give it a try! :D Hope you like my piece <3

@ceejinary

@ceejinary Ceejinary

Magical Girls in the artwork: Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon), Madoka Kaname (Madoka Magica), Sakura Kinomoto (Cardcaptor Sakura).

Artist Talk: I always perceived the standard stereotype of a magical girl as pretty, air-headed and a cute mess! So This piece is purposely cluttered and disoriented as they are prettily colored and in their tree-house. A lot of lighting was used to highlight and compliment their pink attires and chubby childish faces, as their game of Uno spirals into something not so Uno.

@homusatan

@homusatan

homusatan Magical Girls in the artwork: Chris Yukine (Symphogear), Tomoe Mami (Madoka Magica), Jinx (League of Legends Star Guardians Skin Series).

Artist Talk: Symphogear is my favorite underrated mahou shoujo anime and Chris is my favorite character, I started thinking what could link her with other magical girls since she is the usual antagonist turned hero and reached the conclusion that she would love to have fun with other magical girls that are gunslingers like her, that’s how I ended up getting the concept of Chris, Mami and Jinx having fun in a shooting booth at a festival trying to win all the plushies and prizes! <3 It’s kinda cliche going like this, but I really got into art and more brave when I meet magical girls series like Winx, Sailor Moon and Rayearth when I was a little girl, so they ended up making a big part in my life as a girl and as an artist trying to find her place in the world. I’m really thankful for them <3

@duskingcos

Magical Girls in the artwork: Ahiru & Rue (Princess Tutu), Chibiusa & Hotaru (Sailor Moon), Madoka & Homura (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), Utena & Anthy (Revolutionary Girl Utena).

Artist Talk: There are so many magical girl series that really influenced my taste and were a really important part of my growing up! I tried to feature a few of those here, along with a slightly newer favorite (PMMM). I thought it would be funny if all the girls in the top panel and all the girls in the bottom panel got together on occasion to hang out and relate about their (somewhat) similar struggles, in a cafe that suits their tastes.

@hoshiwotadoreba @eri-chi eri

Magical Girls in the artwork: Momomiya Ichigo (Tokyo Mew Mew), Tsukino Usagi (Sailor Moon), Ahiru (Princess Tutu) and Kinomoto Sakura (Cardcaptor Sakura).

Artist Talk: I wanted to draw the girls in ther “magical girl mode” but wearing casual clothing! Also wanted them to match with each other. In this picture, Sakura and Usagi are wearing outfits with matching colors and so are Ichigo and Princess Tutu. My very first anime was Cardcaptor Sakura and I’ve been in love with Magical girls since I was a small child! So I’m really happy to be part of this zine.

Magical Girls in the artwork: Momomiya Ichigo (Tokyo Mew Mew), Tsukino Usagi (Sailor Moon), Kisaragi Honey (Cutie Honey), Marinette Dupain-Cheng (Miraculous ladybug), Kinomoto Sakura (Cardcaptor Sakura).

Artist Talk: Like many other girls, Magical Girls have always inspired me from a young age that girls can be strong and powerful, especially when it comes to protecting the ones they love. They truly inspires you the importance of love and friendship as well as the importance of standing up for yourself and giving you the confidence of self esteem that every girl needs. Hence why I decided to create my work with a sukeban theme, where these girls look badass n threatening if you decide to pick a fight with them.

@hiirusuisaiga @hiirusuisaiga iza Magical Girls in the artwork:

Ichigo Momomiya (Tokyo Mew Mew) | Sakura Kinomoto, Tomoyo Daidouji and Syaoran Li (CardCaptor Sakura) | Atsuko Kagari, Diana Cavendish, Sucy Manbavaran and Lotte Jansson (Little Witch Academia) | Tsubomi Hanazaki, Erika Kurumi, Itsuki Myoudouin, Yuri Tsukikage (Heart Catch Pretty Cure) | Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup (PowerPuff Girls) | Will Vandom, Irma Lair, Taranee Cook, Cornelia Hale and Hay Lin (W.I.T.C.H.) | Ahiru Arima and Rue Kuroha (Princess Tutu)

Artist Talk:

Tokyo Mew Mew was my “gateway” to magical girl anime, because I loved it so much, it made me interested in the whole genre, that’s why I chose Mew Ichigo to be the center for this piece! All other characters there are also incredibly important to me: CCS, my first - and favorite! - magical girl manga; HeartCatch, my favorite Pretty Cure season; PPG and W.I.T.C.H, that were so important to me in my childhood; LWA which I’m rewatching recently and last but not least Princess Tutu, my favorite magical girl show. I still have many more that I love (Shugo Chara, Sailor Moon, Ultra Maniac, Winx Club etc) but then the piece would have even more characters... that’s why I chose to limit it to only 7 series!

Magical Girls in the artwork: Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) Sakura Kinomoto (Card Captor Sakura) Momomiya Ichigo (Tokyo Mew Mew) Chibiusa (Sailor Moon) Ladybug (Miraculous Ladybug).

Artist Talk: I thought the idea of magical girls coming together for a group snapchat photo, whether it be before a big battle, or just going about their daily magical girl duties! Magical girls have always been a big part of my life since I was young, and if not for them, I wouldn’t be a devoted artist! I believe they will always continue to inspire me!

@indidere

Magical Girls in the artwork: Ryuko Matoi (Kill la Kill) and Amu Hinamori (Shugo Chara).

Artist Talk: Ryuko would be a really cool mentor for Amu, I think. Amu would work well with Ryuko as well. I could definitely see them both as the cool kids hanging out together! They also have very similar aesthetics, I think.

@MyintyDraws

@myinty

@myinty.draws Myinty Magical Girls in the artwork: Mitsuki KĹ?yama (Full Moon Wo Sagashite) Yu (Creamy Mami) Lucia Nanami (Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch).

Artist Talk: It’s a concert with Mitsuki, Yu, and Lucia on stage singing with a happy audience, glow sticks and all! I really wanted the colors of the stage to reminiscence of that with the colors you see when something magical is happening.One of my favorite sub genres of Magical Girls were definitely leaning towards the music based ones because I always enjoyed singing their songs growing up. I wanted to draw these three because not only did I love their songs, but the romance dynamics of these characters really made me enjoy the show. Growing up as a tomboy, magical girls really helped me to embrace my feminine side. It taught that you can still be strong and tough yet still enjoy cute things!

Artist Talk: As roses, magical girls are both; beautiful with the most brilliant colors and always in alert with their dangerous powers or weapons. Madoka and Snow white are truly alike. That’s why I put them together. I think they’ll be good friends. Pink + pink = the pinkest

Magical Girls in the artwork: Princess Serenity (Sailor Moon) and Prince Sakura (Card Captor Sakura).

Artist Talk: When the curtain rises, when our enemy appears, when you’re alone and helpless; they will be there fighting in the name of love and justice. Magical Girls aren’t just some crybaby anime girls, they are our sisters and allies with whom we have grown and the ones for we will fight for. They remind us that we don’t need princes, the importance of sisterhood, that we must make our own decisions and, above all of them, that love is our most important gift. Please, take care of each other and love and protect yourself.

Bianca (Bii) Magical Girls in the artwork: Chocola Meilleure (Sugar Sugar Rune), Harukaze Doremi (Ojamajo Doremi) and Atsuko Kagari (Little Witch Academia).

Artist Talk: Since I was a little girl I always loved magical girls series. I remeber how excited I always became in front of the TV trying to imitate my favorite characters, drawing them and wishing to be like them someday. The years passed and my passion and admiration for these characters and their series have grew even bigger! Their strenght as women inspires me even today on my daily routine to fight against my problems and all the situations in my life. For my piece, I drew Chocola, Doremi and Akko trick or treating together using each others clothes because I always loved the witch aesthetic so much and I would love to see these three being friends and having fun together!

Artist Talk: This piece is a drawing of some of my favorite sweets themed or patissier magical girls. I always think about Kirapre and TMM hanging out but I thought it would be fun to take it a step further and add even more sweets girls I could think of. I’ve liked magical girls since I was a kid and these days I mostly stick to precure I still love the cute aesthetic a lot.

Artist Talk: I always loved the sporty girls. They’re so energetic it feels contagious to see them in action! So, for my piece, I thought about my favorite athletes hanging around after a game of soccer. I choose these three because they’re special little goofs of my childhood. I love how magical girls are so different from each other, yet all of them always have a special shine to them. I can clearly see lots of them being best friends, no matter if they’re from different universes.

Magical Girls in the artwork: Sakura Kinomoto (Card Captor Sakura), Makoto Kino (Sailor Moon) and Marinette Dupain-Cheng (Miraculous Ladybug).

Artist Talk: The life of a magical girls isn’t a bed of roses, they spend more time sacrificing themselves for others than enjoying their youth, so Makoto, Sakura and Marinette could totally team up to ‘bake the stress away’ and make some well deserved treats! Magical Girls have been in my life since I can remember, inspiring me to be a better person in day to day life but more important artistically inspiring me to draw cute outfits like Sakura’s or expressive eyes like Usagi’s! This is a tribute to a meaningful part of my childhood (and adulthood), sincerely hope your all enjoy!

Artist Talk: What if magical girls contacted each other the same way we, people on the internet, talk? They can be all internet friends, and one day they see a cute picture and decide that they can make one too! They all try their best to make an arm heart collage. Magical girls are all about love, friendship, brightness and hope, and no matter the age I am, they will always be in my heart. I feel like magical girls inspire me to be a better person and try my best!

Magical Girls in the artwork: Sakura Kinomoto, Tomoyo Daidouji (CardCaptor Sakura) and Ahiru Arima, Rue (Princess Tutu).

Artist Talk: What better time to spend with friends than walking the town, talking and enjoying each other’s company. Ahiru and Sakura are a perfect pair to meet up because they have so much in common. Not to mention how much fun Tomoyo would have making matching costumes for her new friends, and yes that includes the reluctant tag along Rue! As a kid, I was never into shoujo because my sisters and I were not allowed to watch Sailor Moon. However, in 4th grade, I didn’t have many friends so I spent a lot of time reading Cardcaptor Sakura. To this day the series holds a special place in my heart as my start to loving magical girls.

Suitan Magical Girls in the artwork: Nono Hana (Hugtto! Precure), Hinamori Amu (Shugo Chara), Harukaze Doremi (Ojamajo Doremi).

Artist Talk: Magical girls series have been part of my life since I was little, and nowadays they still are, but I have to confess that I wasn’t aware of it until I started to work in this project. I was in a deep slump when I started rewatching them (and watching new seasons like Hugtto! Precure), and it was as if they were cheering me. “Don’t give up! You can do everything”, that kind of vibe. I felt how my motivation boosted and, even now, I still watch magical girls series when I’m almost to cry and give up. And that’s what I tried to do with Nono Hana, Hinamori Amu and Harukaze Doremi (who were very important in my life): to cheer everyone! Fure fure!

Magical Girls in the artwork: Adora (She-ra), Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon), and Madoka Kaname (Madoka Magica).

Artist Talk: I got really inspired by the fact that these three girls actually had kind of an ultimate form transformation outfit! So I decided to swap their outfits and draw how they would react to being dressed in said clothing! Honestly, magical girls have been quite a big deal in life as they really helped me develop my art as well as find new and unite genres of anime to explore!!

Doremi (Ojamajo Doremi), Sakura (Cardcaptor Sakura), Aiko (Ojamajo Doremi), Ichigo (Tokyo Mew Mew), Mint (Tokyo Mew Mew), Hazuki (Ojamajo Doremi) and Tomoyo (Cardcaptor Sakura).

Artist Talk:

Magical Girls stories are my longest lasting passion! I’ve been watching magical girl shows since I was little and they were the first thing I drew. I’m happy to still get a chance to go back to my childhood and draw them every so often! I first came up with the idea for this piece when I was brainstorming, and the idea of Mint and Tomoyo having fancy tea with their slightly less fancy best friends was so funny to me. From there I added another set of one fancy gal and her adorably disastrous best friends in Hazuki, Aiko and Doremi. I knew I wanted a piece that was mostly pink blue and green and soft and I’m very happy with the final result! I’m thankful for this zine because it gave me a reason to draw these characters that I love so much alongside so many talented an hardworking individuals!

Magical Girls in the artwork: Utena Tenjou (Revolutionary Girl Utena) , Hana (Ojamajo Doremi), Tsubomi Hanasaki (Heartcatch Precure).

Artist Talk: Magical girls have always been a big support through my life, they helped me to understand myself and the world around me a little better. A lot of these shows teach very important lessons about life, and I hope the world of magical girls keep expanding so they can reach to more kids! For this piece in particular I wanted to draw 3 girls with plant motifs (because I love nature) so I thought Utena, Hana and Tsubomi would be perfect! Utena and Tsubomi are having a good time at the greenhouse and Hana is probably about to cause some trouble...

@faerisami

Magical Girls in the artwork: Bloom (Winx Club) and Doremi Harukaze (Ojamajo Doremi).

Artist Talk: I don’t know when my love for magical girl shows started, but I know it was Winx Club who did it, back when I had no idea there was an entire genre dedicated to girls transforming into powerful magical beings and fighting evil. Since then, I was introduced to anime, and my love for the genre only grew and grew. Magical girls are the reason I started drawing, and now years and years later is one of the main factors that keep me drawing. This piece brings together the main characters of my two favorite shows of all time - Winx Club and Ojamajo Doremi. I noticed both shows have witches and fairies, so I thought it might be fun to play around with that idea!

Artist Talk:

Ever since I happened across Sailor Moon at the tender age of 6 years old, magical girls have always been a huge influence on my creations- from my love of anime-styled art to writing stories with female characters who are both strong and relatable. I originally had the idea of a bunch of magical girls having fun on a purikura machine (a photo booth), but I decided to add some polaroids and a letter to make it look like a fond memory that Usagi put up on a pin board! I can really see her looking at this when times get tough as a reminder that she’s never alone!

@maris.q

@Marisa Maris Queiroz Magical Girls in the artwork: Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon), Ichigo (Tokyo Mew Mew) e Sakura (Cardcaptor Sakura).

Artist Talk:

My passion for magical girls came from Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura and what attracted me most about these stories was the idea of strong women protagonists. These animes were one of the few with girls fighting bravely alongside with their friends. Other series also caught my attention like Tokyo Mew Mew, Corrector Yui, Magic Knight Rayearth, Star vs forces of evil, among others. I always thought the aesthetics of magical girls are beautiful with all the transformations, clothes, accessories... For this piece I gathered the 3 characters that most impact me when I was young and portrayed them as medieval warriors (the general idea at least xD). I wanted to present the idea of warrior girls who, besides being magical, are brave and always are ready for new challenges!

Artist Talk: W.I.T.C.H. is my favourite series from the years when I was a teenager. So I decided that I must incude them into piece. Another character from my piece is Star. How they solve problems,make new friends, do mistakes, grows as a character, their adventures-from both show ..I really enjoy it. And I’m very thankful to them, because these shows and these characters really inspired and impacted me. I came to the idea of piece when I imagined that both worlds have many magical dimensions and portals, so maybe they could somehow meet each other :)

@sigma.draws

Sandra - Sigma Magical Girls in the artwork: Utena (Utena Revolutionary Girl), She Ra/Adora (She Ra), Rina (Pichi Pichi Pitch Mermaid Melody) and Sailor Uranus/Haruka (Sailor Moon).

Artist Talk: I started into magical girl animes with Ojomajo Doremi, and then I had a very hard obession with Pichi Pichi Pitch, specially, I was focused on masculine girls like Aiko from Doremi and Rina from PPP. They made me realize I was bi all along and that I can be cute and have masculine traits at the same time. Last year I made a class project about Utena, the animation and all the metaphors, and is just such a deep story having on mind it was from the 90s. I related so much to Utena I needed to draw her with Adora from She Ra, another series I love. I thought they would get along well. Finally I drew Sailor Uranus, even tho I haven’t seen the anime, she’s my favorite character from SM. I also have an obession with fashion and character design so I drew them in a shopping centre.

@seacrowns

@seacrowns

@seacrowns Sea Magical Girls in the artwork: Mirai Asahina (Mahou Tsukai Precure) and Doremi Harukaze (Ojamajo Doremi).

Artist Talk:

For my piece, I knew I had to draw someone from Ojamajo Doremi, because it was the series that encouraged me to begin drawing and got me into anime; it was the anime that introduced me to anime. I really feel that my life would be completely different if it wasn’t for Ojamajo Doremi and I’m extremely thankful for it! I knew I had to draw something for Precure too since it is probably my second favorite magical girl series, and I especially love the concept of Mahou Tsukai Precure! Witch-magical girls are my favorite type so I knew I had to go in that direction! I have a soft-spot for magical girls, specifically because it lead me to get into drawing and it caused this sort of “domino-effect” for the rest of my life. It lead me to get into other things like fictional idols and other genres of anime, which lead me to meet really amazing friends! Our current selves all stem from a chain of events in our lives, and for me, the beginning of that chain was a magical girl anime called Ojamajo Doremi.

Artist Talk:

I’ve loved magical girl shows for as long as I can recall having grown up on afterschool re-runs of Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura. As a little girl, I loved watching shows with strong female characters that emphasized the importance of friendship and being kind. These shows inspired me as a child and continue to influence me well into adulthood in so many aspects of my life. For this piece, I was inspired by 80’s roller rinks mixed with a dash of vaporwave aesthetic and a large dose of magical girls. I picked some of my favorite characters from various shows and then imagined how they might interact with each other and this is what I came up with!

@miyacarons

Miya Magical Girls in the artwork: Minako Aino (Sailor Moon), Erika Kurumi (HeartCatch Pretty Cure) and Miyako Gotokuji (Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z).

Artist Talk:

I love Erika’s love for fashion and how she does her very best to become a fashion designer, so I just knew I had to draw her doing something like this. Minako is so pretty, if Erika ever met her, she would totally want her to be her model! Miyako wasn’t there in the first sketch, but she and Erika would get along so well because of their hobbies, I had to add her as well! (Also, a way to honor her anime that was an obsession of mine when I was younger, hehe.) I’ve always loved stories about magical worlds, fantasy and anything that could let your dreams afloat. With magical girls, I could picture this magic happening inside my reality and I felt way more connected to them. Beautiful messages, meaningful connections and an undying courage were the things that inspired me while watching them, they helped me grow into who I am today and to shape my world, I am forever grateful for that.

Retasu Midorikawa (Tokyo Mew Mew) and Hazuki Fujiwara (Ojamajo Doremi).

Artist Talk:

Magical girls were present in my life since when I was a child. Cute girls, cute mascots, cute outfits, cute and wholesome moments, what more could I ask for? And of course when they were transforming I was posing in front TV too, wishing to be cute and strong like a magical girl(laughs, someday). In my piece I drew my favorite girls from Tokyo Mew Mew and Ojamajo Doremi, since Retasu is a maid and Hazuki has a patissier outfit I thought it would be a cute crossover. I originally would draw Ichigo and Doremi, the main protagonists from their series, but I wanted to show some love to my favorite ones! When I was younger it was really sad to find characters to relate (I wear glasses since ever), so these characters were really important to me because I felt included when my friends were playing as mahou shoujo! Of course I also love Mizuno Ami from Sailor Moon too! This ended up getting a little long(laughs). Sorry! I hope you like my piece and appreciate other artists hardwork in this zine!

Artist Talk: I grew up watching magical girls series, they’re “part of me” now. I start drawing them since I was a child. I think that my favourite serie is Mermaid Melody but the one that will always be in my heart is Tokyo Mew Mew it was also my first anime <3. @KuShu_Art

@kushu_fanart

KuShu Magical Girls in the artwork:

Sailor Cosmos (Sailor Moon) and Goddess Madoka (Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica).

Artist Talk:

I grew up seeing all those strong girls in pretty costumes fighting against evil when i was still very young and going to elementary school. Sailor Moon, Wedding Peach, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne are only a few to mention here. Tokyo Mew Mew was among my very first manga I read and Utena still is one of my most favourite series. For me it was very important to see strong independent girls leading the way and showing me, what strenght is about. That a girl can be strong and caring, fighting and protecting what is dear. Those girls helped me becoming the woman I am today and that’s why I keep Magical Girls very dear to my heart. When I was thinking about my piece for this zine I had many ideas and at first I really wanted to draw some of my most favourite characters but then I went for two characters who are considered as “the strongest and most powerful among the others in their series. So I drew them together because I think no matter how strong and powerful you are, you always need a friend to hold on to. A friend who holds their hand in a time when even the most powerful becomes weak. Always being there for each other, never having to be alone again.

Artist Talk: For my piece I went with an RPG theme! I wanted to show some of my favorite magical girls and what their classes would have been had they been in an RPG! I did my piece on MSpaint because of issues with my computer, but I also feel like the pixel art style reflects old video games pretty well!

Fue Magical Girls in the artwork: Cocona and Papika (Flip Flappers) Tsubomi Hanasaki(Heartcatch Precure), Nanoha Takamachi (Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha).

Artist Talk: For this piece, I drew some of my favorite studious magical girls having a study sessions. The inspiration for this was those few episodes of Sailor Moon where the inner senshi try their best to help Usagi pass her exams. I wanted to draw modern magical girl characters from some of my favorite magical girl shows in recent years. The first anime I ever watched just happened to be a magical girl anime! Some of my fondest memories were the afternoons I’d spend after school, catching up with whatever episode of Cardcaptors or Sailor Moon or downloading paper dolls of Usagi and her friends to dress up. I still remember the music that would play when visiting the Cardcaptors website! If there’s a new magical girl show airing, you’ll bet I’ll be watching it!

kana Magical Girls in the artwork: Madoka Kaname (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) and Snow White (Magical Girl Raising Project).

Artist Talk: i’ve always loved magical girls, even before i properly discovered anime as a whole! because i grew up absolutely obsessed with revolutionary girl utena, i’ve developed a love for shows of the genre that have darker-than-usual themes; since PMMM and MGRP are among my all-time favourites, i wanted to honour that by drawing their two lovely protagonists together! snow white and madoka not only share a bunch of character traits (such as their initial naive response to becoming magical girls) they’re also similar design-wise, with lots of cute pink elements to play around with. i honestly just wanted to draw these two because of how special they are to me and also because of how they match visually! as you can see i’m a die-hard pink mahou shoujo supremacist…hehe!!

Holly Magical Girls in the artwork: Karin Hanazono (Kamichama Karin), Ichigo Momomiya (Tokyo Mew Mew) and Taruto (Magical Meow Meow Taruto).

Artist Talk: I first started reading magical girl manga in middle school, when I checked series out volume by volume from the public library. I have a lot of fond memories of stuffing six books into my backpack at once, stocking up on reading material as if getting ready for a siege. They’ve always been a welcome escape from the world, fantasies where transforming into your ideal self was as easy as a few magic words and a snap of your fingers. Some of the first magical girl manga I read were Kamichama Karin, Tokyo Mew Mew and Sailor Moon, so I chose to put some of those characters together in a cat-appreciation scene. And where you have cats and magical girls, you can’t leave out Taruto.

Magical Girls in the artwork: Minako Aino (Sailor Moon) and Stella (Winx Club).

Artist Talk: I wanted to draw some characters who were recognizable to my childhood, but who I also thought would get along well and these two blondes came to mind early on in my design process. I also thought it would be interesting because their powers resemble each other and I wanted to entertain the idea of their friendship. I wanted to have a cute scene of Stella and Minako hanging out doing skin care in a lovely room setting. It just felt fun and soft and I love those types of scenes. I grew up watching Winx Club and later was introduced to magical girls in anime and adored everything they were representative of and they are a part of how I went about developing the aesthetic of my art style.

Artist Talk: Shugo chara and Ojamajo Doremi were some of the first magical girl fandoms I ever got into! I loved how both of their respective series set out to help people solve their problems and for that I think they’re one and the same! So I swapped their outfits. I think it really suits them!

Magical Girls in the artwork: Kaname Madoka (Puella Magi Madoka Magica) and Kinomoto Sakura (Card Captor Sakura).

Artist Talk: The first series of magical girls I saw was Sakura Card Captor, and I really loved the beauty of the series and all Sakura’s dresses were awesome. Later in my adolescence Madoka Magica appeared, and wow, I completely change the world of magical girls for me. Both Sakura and Madoka are my favorite magical girls and I thought that a good way to draw them together was with the beginning and the end of each one, the beginning of Sakura and the final transformation of Madoka.

Bear Magical Girls in the artwork: Sakura Kinomoto (Cardcaptor Sakura), Zakuro Fujiwara (Tokyo Mew Mew), Atsuko Kagari (Little Witch Academia), Adora (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power), Makoto Kino (Sailor Moon).

Artist Talk: For my piece, I drew girls from different shows skating down an empty street in Tokyo (rare, I know!). I love that on any show, the girls hobbies and personalities vary and yet they still get along. I picked a soft pick color pallet to balance out the “chaos” happening among the girls. Rather than a single magical girl show, the idea of the “magical girl” has always filled me with the sense of power, love, and the ability to fight for what you believe in. Magical girls also taught me its ok to cry, to be hungry, and that sometimes you just need to rely on friends to help you back up. Magical girls can be tough and quiet, sporty and loud, or cute and ditsy. There is no one magical girl just like there is no one singular “girl.”

@sasskervilles

kao Magical Girls in the artwork: Homura Akemi (Madoka Magica) and Princess Tutu (Princess Tutu).

Artist Talk: Magical girls has always been an uplifting genre for me! It has always empowered me to see strong girls take on the world and its problems, and WIN. Most precious of all though, is that every body of work had made me believe in the power of magic and friendship. Regarding my art, I wanted to tackle a timepiece theme because I’d always been fascinated by beautiful clock designs for as long as I can remember. I thought it would be fun to draw, but also interesting and heartwarming to imagine Homura meeting Princess Tutu in the midst of her time-looping nightmare. Homura would undoubtedly be reminded of Madoka through Tutu’s kind countenance, and her resolve to change the dim future of her world would once again be strengthened through their meaningful encounter.

Artist Talk: Doing this piece I had to pay tribute to my all time favorite series, Sailor Moon, and bring my current magical obsession, Star vs the Forces of Evil. Moon and Usagi are two of my favorite magical girls of all time because of how much they grow in their respective series. You can see them start as young girls learning to gain control of their powers and transition into adult women as mothers, queens and teachers to the next generation. So I just had to do a mommy daughter crossover moment!

lucy Magical Girls in the artwork: Lucia Nanami (Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch), Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) and Hikari Kujou (Pretty Cure).

Artist Talk: From the beginning I wanted to draw girls from series that were very dear to me during my childhood, so I made a list with those and ended up picking these three, which were some of my favorite characters when I was little. I also thought of drawing a cute scene with them hanging out and show them as just the teens they are. As cool as I find them in their pretty magical outfits, I always enjoyed seeing the girls during their daily lifes, facing struggles and showing happiness I could relate to more, which only made me like them even more, so I thought that would be a nice concept to go for. In the end, I had a lot of fun with my piece, giving them cute casual outfits and drawing my all time favorite girls being close to each other. I wish I could be their friend too!

@nicolsaltdelete NicoleAltDelete Magical Girls in the artwork: Usagi, Ami, Rei (Sailor Moon), Adora and Entrapta (SheRa), Madoka and Kyoko (Madoka Magica), Marinette (Miraculous Ladybug), Star Butterfly (Star vs. the Forces of Evil).

Artist Talk: My main love of magical girls entirely stems from Sailor Moon, so I wanted to do a piece with her at the center of it. One of Usagi’s main hobbies is video games, and I thought something fun and glowy in an arcade would be perfect. It’s a fun setting to get some interesting interactions out of tons of girls from different series, from Adora and Entrapta, who have probably never seen games like these in their lives, to Kyoko, who’s canonically a DDR master. A lot of my favorite magical girl series aren’t what you’d consider as the typical “magical girl” genre, but they were heavily inspired by it and it shows. The same can be said for a lot of the concepts I make, and I’ve loved the chance to show case some of my biggest inspirations from the genre. I can’t wait to see what other kinds of empowered girls the world will have to offer!

@conquiary

Conquiary Magical Girls in the artwork: Will Vandom (W.I.T.C.H.) and Hikaru Shidou (Magic Knight Rayearth).

Artist Talk: Like a lot of people, I was introduced to magical girl shows and comics when I was young. Often, I would catch shows on tv, but even more often, I would go to my local library and check out my favorite magical girl comics! My favorites were W.I.T.C.H., Magic Knight Rayearth, Full Moon Wo Sagashite and Card Captor Sakura. For my piece I drew Will from W.I.T.C.H. and Hikaru from Magic Knight Rayearth. When I first started this piece I really wanted to include a western magical girl, but I also wanted to draw themes of fantasy which are present in both of shows/comics. Fantasy, girls with swords and magical girls are three of my favorite things so I wanted to try and capture them all in one cohesive illustration. This piece was quite a challenge for me to complete, but in true magical girl fashion, I couldn’t have gotten it done without the help of my friends!

Magical Girls in the artwork: Princess Tutu/Ahiru (Princess Tutu) and Doremi Harukaze (Ojamajo Doremi).

Artist Talk: No matter what I wanted to draw Tutu and Doremi interacting. Ojamajo Doremi (or when I first watched it Magical Doremi) was the first magical girl anime I ever watched. It left a great impression on me as a kid. I wanted to connect that with how Princess Tutu left so much of an impression on me as a young adult so much that I started loving the magical girl genre again! Keeping this in mind, I thought it was cool Tutu’s powers are dance based and Doremi’s spell casting powers are loosely music based that I thought putting the two together would be interesting!

@wilderulz @ci_ci_elizabeth Wilderulz Magical Girls in the artwork: Sakura Kinomoto (Cardcaptor Sakura) and Adora (She-ra: Princess of Power).

Artist Talk: Sakura and Adora magically switching outfits! Adora has never worn something so elaborate and flamboyant in her entire life, and she loves how the skirt swirls around her, it really feels magical. At first Sakura was a bit intimidated by the size of the Sword of Protection, but soon began to feel the power that She-Ra feels when she wields it. And of course, Sakura’s good friend Tomoyo (who designs and sews all of her outfits) loves this new look on her! I personally love the magical girl genre, they’ve inspired me from a young age to be strong and true to myself and my beliefs. I also appreciate the uplifting message and tone of these shows, because that’s sometimes just what you need to get through hard times.

Artist Talk: Magical girls make up a big part of my early exposure to superheroes and anime. I never watched a huge range of them, but I still keep going back to my favorites time and time again because of the beautiful visuals and catchy songs. @janarowe janarowe Magical Girls in the artwork: Lettuce Midorikawa (Tokyo Mew Mew) and Rina Toin (Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch).

Artist Talk: It was difficult to choose since I have so many favourites, but I went with two beautiful, green mermaids - Lettuce and Rina! I originally got the idea for my piece when I recently began to rewatch Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. I loved Rina and Lettuce, it just seemed like the perfect fit for an underwater encounter! Tokyo Mew Mew has a very special place in my heart. It was my very first mahou-shoujo anime and is what sparked my love for fanart. My childhood friends and I adored Tokyo Mew Mew so much we even created our own original characters. I had found Mermaid Melody shortly after and fell in love with the magical girl genre. For me, magical girls are a creative outlet - cute girls, adorable outfits, magical elements, and the pursuit of good (well, sometimes). I will never get tired of magical girls and I can’t wait to see even more creations as time goes on!

Artist Talk: Magical girls have shaped who I am as an artist and as a woman. To be unapologetically glittery, shiny, and cute, yet stronger than anything in the universe...I believe the magical girl is a totem of what it means to love your femininity. Also, I love the outfits and crazy hair colors! I’ve always had a fascination with ballet, probably because I am utterly incapable of it. Shows like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura are some of my favorite magical girls series, so for my piece I thought it would be interesting to see these characters interact. @protosstar Hex Magical Girls in the artwork: Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Moon), Michiru Kaioh (Sailor Moon), Akira Kenjou (Precure), and Yukari Kotozume (Precure).

Artist Talk: Magical girls have always been special to me, seeing them fighting to protect their friends while still being true to themselves was an inspiration to me growing up. For my piece I wanted to draw some characters that really mean a lot to me. Haruka and Michiru were the first LGBT characters I ever saw in children’s media, and the way they unashamedly loved other girls made me realise that maybe my own feelings weren’t so bad. Then only a few years ago, Precure had its first LGBT characters, Akira and Yukari, and knowing there could be kids out there who were just like me, finally seeing themselves represented in such a well known franchise just made me so happy. This piece is a tribute to these characters that made so many people, myself included, feel less alone.

Artist Talk: When I was a child, sometimes I would wake up much too early before school, so to pass time I would watch anime on TV. I was enthralled by the shows, which included Jewelpet, Powerpuff Girls Z and Winx Club. I learned that these shows were about ‘magical girls’, and for a long time I was obsessed. I copied the outfits the girls wore into my sketchbooks, and wrote my own stories about ordinary schoolgirls who transformed into heroes by night. Magical girl anime and manga has had a huge influence on the types of things I like to draw today; whether it be frilly dresses or sailor-style school uniforms. I’ve really enjoyed being a part of this project, and I hope it inspires people to find their inner magic!

I still like this idea, so I made Icons of different magical girls holding ribbons that connect them! :) So you can use it with your friends, or just choose the one that is matching your mood! I love magical girls because they don’t have to be a certain type! They can be clumsy, naive, childish, serious, mysterious, intelligent, strong, bold, outgoing, quiet and so much more and they still can be magical girls because there are SO MANY ways to be a magical girl.
