The Taste of

VICTORIA

Hungry for the unique flavour of Vancouver Island? Try these dining options focused on local ingredients BY J U L I A D I LWO R T H

on’t let the lack of skyscrapers fool you. Victoria is a world-class culinary city, completely obsessed with fine food. Downtown is essentially one big food court, with top restaurants on every street, and unique dining experiences in every style of international fare are scattered across the peninsula. But how do you find the unique taste of the Pacific Northwest? Fortunately, there’s a thriving locavore dining scene too, specializing in the produce of the area’s fields and sea. Consider this your cheat sheet to the best of everything farm-to-table.

D

BACKYARD BREWS AND TIPPLES BEER Along with local food, southern Vancouver Island is experiencing an explosion of craft beverage making. Set out on foot or cruiser bike into the warehouse district of Rock Bay, just north of downtown, for a brewery crawl. At Hoyne Brewing Co., $5 buys you a tasting flight (cash only). Sample the signature, hoppy-as-all-get-out Fat Tug IPA at Driftwood Brewery. Try the small-batch experiments at Whistle Buoy Brewing Co. Or luxuriate in the tasting room at Vancouver Island Brewing with a summer sour.

Enjoy seafood literally on the dock at Red Fish Blue Fish

Eating OUT Chinatown’s OLO is the slow-food, peakpresentation mainstay that people buy gift cards for. It’s fine dining as far as the menu is concerned but the atmosphere is casual and fun, with heritage brick, splashes of orange and crazy scribble light fixtures. OLO’s menu is always changing, which leaves room for play and experimentation: sablefish collars (fins come with), confit chicken leg with a side of potato foam, and chicken liver pate dressed up so beautifully with pickled purple daikon you can’t help but take photos first. Fresh off winning a bucket of awards is Saveur and its hotshot, 31-year-old chef, Robert Cassels. Cassels specializes in delivering French-inspired contemporary cuisine that pulls from the area’s rich heritage: chilled soba noodles with miso and grilled shitake, Haida Gwaii spring salmon with Cowichan chanterelles and Cowichan Valley chicken let you taste local in every bite. 10 Acres is a 10-acre farm located 25 kilometres from its three downtown restaurants of the same name. What they don’t grow or ethically raise themselves is sourced nearby, and even compost from the restaurants makes it back to the farm— it’s farm-to-table and back again! Each eatery is unique with its own mood and

menu. 10 Acres Commons is the anniversary dinner spot with an artfully crafted menu to match its rustic-luxe setting. It is just steps from the Inner Harbour, has a heated streetside patio and serves up organic pub favourites like mile-high burgers and buck-a-shuck oysters that you can wash down with a local white India pale ale. 10 Acres Bistro is a more casual option, with a locally inspired lineup of dishes (order the rotisserie chicken before it sells out) and drinks. Brunch is practically a religion in this town, but to hit multiple birds with one stone, head to Paul’s Diner by Fol Epi. It’s attached to Paul’s Motor Inn, which has been a local icon since it started out as a drive-in theatre in 1965. The diner has just been taken over by Victoria’s artisan bakery darling Fol Epi and now this renovated retro gem is offering organic and handcrafted brunch, lunch, dinner and cocktails. For sustainably harvested Ocean Wise West Coast seafood, look no further than Red Fish Blue Fish. This cheery yellow shipping-container eatery is right on a wharf in the Inner Harbour, with casual umbrella-shaded seating by the water. The menu is fathoms deep, from tempurabattered wild salmon and chips to albacore tuna tacones and deep-fried oysters.

FALL IN LOVE September is the time to take in harvest events like Brewery & the Beast Culinary Festival and the Salt Spring Island Apple Festival.

COCKTAILS Want something stronger? Pass under a purple neon elephant on Fort Street and keep walking down a long tiled hallway until you reach Little Jumbo Restaurant and Bar, one of Victoria’s favourite downtown cocktail haunts. Dark and moody, with a touch of Prohibition-era mystique, it’s the perfect spot for meeting up with friends for truffle fries and a serious cocktail made from regional spirits. Other honourable mentions: Clive’s Classic Lounge, Veneto Bar Ristorante and Clarke & Co. SPIRITS On the waterfront in Sidney, Victoria Distillers makes a series of smallbatch craft spirits, from hemp vodka to brandy, but it’s best known for the blue-purple Empress 1908 Gin. A collaboration with Victoria’s iconic Fairmont Empress Hotel, the gin gets its unique jewel colour from butterfly pea blossoms. It’s a favourite in cocktails, which you should try at the distillery’s cocktail lounge. CIDER The whole family is welcome at Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse, a bucolic, 10-acre orchard between the ocean and Saanichton’s town centre with more than a thousand organic apple trees supplying the fruit for its award-winning ciders. Sipping a blush pink Ruby Rose on the patio with the waves crashing off the shore is exactly what Island life is all about.

tourismvictoria.com | 11

FOOD & DRINK

Down on the FARM Driving out of downtown up to The Roost Farm Bakery & Vineyard Bistro in North Saanich is a different kind of farm-to-table experience. It’s a farm with a winery, bistro and bakery all in one location. The wheat grass you see blowing in the wind is milled on-site and used in the establishment’s freshly baked breads. You can stroll the vineyard, take a tour, do a tasting and then settle in at the bistro to taste food that’s grown within sight of where you’re sitting. On the way back to town, swing by Country Bee Honey Farm for a jar of infused honey – great paired with your favourite dishes. The Glenrosa Farm Restaurant offers a similar on-location experience, but with the ultimate storybook view. Imagine sipping the Island’s Unsworth Pinot Noir rose on the patio of a lemon-yellow heritage house that overlooks rolling fields and a weather-beaten grey barn in Metchosin. Brunch, lunch and afternoon tea make this the perfect midday stop in the sprawling farmlands just outside of downtown Victoria.

Much of Saanich remains rich and scenic agricultural land, helping supply the city's eateries

Practically every neighbourhood in Greater Victoria has its own farmers’ market, but the James Bay Market could be the most whimsical. It’s an openair bazaar that runs every Saturday, May to September, where local farmers and artisans set up right on the grass, serenaded by live bands. Year-round markets include the Esquimalt Farmers Market (outdoors May through September, in the Esquimalt Recreation Centre the rest of the year) and the Victoria Public Market. Housed inside the old Hudson’s Bay building downtown, the latter features The Very Good Butchers – not purveyors of meat at all, but producers of organic, plant-based meat alternatives like Ribz, pepperoni, Smokin’ burgers, bangers and Stuffed Beast. They have a little sit-in restaurant too, so you can try their Very Big Mac and gluten-free, vegan Mac ‘n Cheeze.

WATERFRONT City

Living on an island, Victorians make the ocean a part of their lifestyle. Here are some great ways and places to enjoy being beside, on and in the water BY J U L I A D I LWO R T H

14 | Destination Greater Victoria 2020 | 800-663-3883

oised at the southernmost tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria is surrounded by water. Downtown restaurants and shops pour into the central harbour, which is a hive of activity. Dockside markets and pop-up concerts are flanked by the iconic Parliament Buildings and The Fairmont Empress hotel. You could easily spend hours here, but for those who enjoy the water this is just the start. Aquatic adventures stretch in every direction: white-sand beaches, breaching whales and teeming tidepools are all within easy reach.

The cliffside path that snakes along Dallas Road has one of the most stunning panoramas in the city, year-round. Over wild pink roses and a weathered timber fence you can look straight across the Salish Sea to Port Angeles or watch the windsurfers jump waves down below. When the sun is out, it seems like everyone is here with their dog or taking a book to the beach. Start your walking tour at the Ogden Point Breakwater with a coffee at Breakwater Café and Bistro, take a photo in front of the 1912 lighthouse, then start walking east as far as you care to go. Another way to get a good view of the water – both salt and fresh – is to ride a bike along the Galloping Goose and Lochside trails, cross-city pathways converted from old railway lines. From Victoria Harbour, venture north along the Gorge Waterway (a six-kilometre sea arm that stretches from Selkirk Trestle to the Portage Inlet), across scenic wood-trestle bridges, over duckfilled ponds and through the forest before fetching up along the shorelines of a brace of local lakes. You can rent a bike for the

day at Sports Rent, The Pedaler or Cycle BC Rentals.ca, or join a guided excursion with Bike Tours Victoria. Want to see wildlife? To the west, in Colwood, lies Esquimalt Lagoon. Set back behind a long strip of driftwood-covered coastline, this migratory bird sanctuary is filled with families of Canada geese, swans, herons, gulls and ducks. People come from all over to photograph the waterfowl, and local artists have even taken to creating elaborate driftwood birds that you can spot along the beach. Time permitting, Botanical Beach makes a highly recommended day trip. Yes, it’s a twoand-a-half-hour drive west, just past Port Renfrew, but you won’t find anything else like it in all of B.C. Over the years, rocks, ocean waves and sea urchins have punched unnatural-looking orband kidney-shaped tidal pools into Botanical’s soft sandstone. Plan ahead to arrive at low tide, enabling you to peer into these aquarium-like ecosystems filled with crabs, anemones, starfish, sea urchins, hermit crabs, fish and countless other fascinations, while the surf crashes below.

ENERGY BOOST Ride the Glide rents electric bikes for easy exploring – delivered to wherever you are in the city.

Victoria's daily life revolves around the Inner Harbour (opposite page); twilight at Ogden Point (top right); the ebb tide at Botanical Beach reveals aquarium-like tidepools (above right); riding the Galloping Goose trail past inlets and lakes (above); the seaside path beside Dallas Road is one of Victoria's favourite strolls

ON the Water Pocked with sheltered inlets and bays, including the harbour and Gorge Waterway, Victoria’s shoreline offers even novice paddlers the opportunity to explore the rich marine environment up close. You can rent stand-up paddleboards from Ocean River Sports (which has locations downtown and in Oak Bay) and South Island SUP, as well as kayaks from Victoria Kayak. Many rental operators also offer scenic tours, which is a great way to get your bearings and become acquainted with the area’s aquatic residents – you’re guaranteed to see at least one otter or harbour seal! Speaking of wildlife sightings, you’ll never forget the first time you see a pod of black orca fins slicing through the water, or a humpback splashing and rolling in the waves without a care in the world. Whale watching is something everyone should do at least once in their lives, and Victoria has numerous local charters that take you right into the action in speedy open-air boats

or luxury catamarans to witness grey whales, orcas, harbour porpoises, sea lions and more in their natural habitat. Scenic sunset paddle tours from Kelp Reef Adventures showcase the marine wildlife (under Victoria’s signature pink skies), while 3 Hour Sail offers landlubbers the chance to steer the ship on a pleasure sail in the Salish Sea. Tight for time? You don’t need a reservation for the charming Victoria Harbour Ferry – just hop on one of its 15 docking stops around Victoria’s Inner Harbour and up north through the Gorge. Small green vessels give you an intimate look at Victoria from the water (tickets start at $7). Harbour Ferry also offers 10- and 12-person group tours that run 45 and 75 minutes, starting at $30 per adult. If Northwest Coast fishing is on your bucket list, Adam’s Fishing Charters and Island Outfitters offer thrilling high-sea adventure quests, from local salmon and halibut to crab, clam and oyster tours.

PRIZED QUARRY Salt water sport fish of the Pacific Northwest include five species of Pacific salmon, ling cod, rockfish and halibut.

Gonzales Beach (top) boasts white sand and crystal clear water; whale watching tour operators can take you where the orcas are in just a few hours (above); create your own itinerary on the Victoria Harbour Ferry (left); or try to land a mighty tyee salmon with Island Outfitters (below)

The Capital Region contains literally dozens of beaches, each with its own attributes and vibe. Ask a local or the helpful staff at the Victoria Visitor Centre for their recommendation for you and your crew

IN the Water Want to hit the beach? You won’t have to travel far – one of Victoria’s best beaches is just a 13-minute drive from downtown. Nestled below the sleepy summer homes and stately mansions of Gonzales Bay, Gonzales Beach is a sheltered stretch of white sand with clear, clean water, public washrooms, picnic tables and plenty of space for everyone – even at the peak of summer you’ll never be towel-to-towel with your neighbours. Granted, the Salish Sea can feel brisk. Fortunately, Victorians are spoiled with a selection of warmer freshwater swimming holes too. Thetis Lake is only a 35-minute car ride northwest

from downtown and one of the biggest and best. The H-shaped lake is a great place for families or launching a kayak. If your group is more mobile, take to the 4.9-kilometre trail that surrounds the lake and look for a private rock bluff to set up shop for the day. For those happiest under the waves, Rockfish Divers and Esquimalt Eco Tours offer snorkelling and diving adventures off Victoria’s West Shore as well as equipment rentals and boat charters. You can expect to see a rainbow of underwater vegetation, curious fish, crabs and anemones, plus whales and dolphins often make guest appearances while you’re out on the boat.

HOW'S THE WATER? Ocean temperatures around Victoria range between 7.5°C in winter and 12°C in summer.

Need to refuel between aquatic adventures? Fisherman’s Wharf is a delightful walk west along the waterfront from the main harbour downtown. A charming destination on its own, this little floating community with houseboats and market stalls has even more seafood on offer at Barb’s Fish & Chips and The Fish Store. Just across the Johnson Street Bridge (hang around to catch it flip completely vertical to let boats pass underneath) is the harbour restaurant and popular local haunt, Spinnakers Gastro Pub, where elevated and seafood-forward casual favourites combine with a stellar patio view. A welcome new addition to Victoria’s on-the-water eateries is Boom + Batten, whose menu is inspired by the coastal Pacific Northwest; dishes like marinated octopus, scallops, albacore tuna and Humboldt squid show off the best of the ocean’s bounty. And there are few better places to catch the setting sun (with fresh West Coast fare) than upstairs at the Breakwater Bistro & Tasting Room.

SIGHTS

If These Streets Could

TALK

Exploring Victoria along five of its most colourful boulevards BY PAUL WILLCOCKS

ictoria is rare among North American cities in that it eschews a grid of roadways laid out to the points of the compass. Its avenues instead curve and meet at oblique angles like the old cities of Europe. Built before the advent of the automobile, many of the city’s streets grew organically out of the needs of pioneering residents to get around on foot or, at best, at the speed of a horse’s trot. That helps make Victoria delightfully walkable today. Here are five streets – each with its own distinct character, history, charm and secrets – best explored at an unhurried pace.

V

Government Street hosts a number of lovingly restored heritage structures, such as the old Bank of British Columbia building, now home to the Bard & Banker Public House (above); the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (top right) can be found on mostly residential Moss Street; Garrick’s Head Pub (bottom left) serves thirsty customers on Bastion Square; Johnson Street features quirky shops like Oscar & Libby’s (bottom right)

HIGH TEA High tea remains a Victoria tradition, served in the afternoon at several hotels, cafés and historic sites. Then board a Gray Line Hop-on Hopoff tour for an anglophile experience on a doubledecker bus.

Since the Hudson’s Bay Company established Fort Victoria in 1843, Government Street has been at the centre of city life. It’s paved now and the streetcar tracks are long gone, but the classic buildings remain. The one-kilometre stroll along Government from Pandora Street down to the Inner Harbour, the Royal BC Museum, IMAX Victoria and the British Columbia Parliament Building proffers a broad avenue with generous sidewalks and room for benches, lined with stores and restaurants. A century ago this was the bankers’ row, and the opulent buildings have found new lives. Munro’s Books, considered one of Canada’s most

18 | Destination Greater Victoria 2020 | 800-663-3883

beautiful bookstores, is in the 1909 Royal Bank building. The Irish Times pub occupies the 1894 Bank of Montreal building, while The Bard & Banker Public House is in the beautifully restored Bank of British Columbia building, constructed in 1885. (The bard in the pub’s name refers to poet Robert Service, who worked in the bank.) Both are known for great food and live music. Garrick’s Head Pub has been in the same

building at the corner of Government and historic Bastion Square since 1867. If pubs aren’t your style, consider a stop at Murchie’s Tea & Coffee for a snack or one of their specially blended teas to take home. Or sidle up to the Tea Tasting Bar at Silk Road Tea in historic Chinatown for the finest organic tea blends. Looking for gifts? Cowichan Trading Company has a wide selection of work by First Nations artists and craftspeople. Jade Victoria is also B.C.-focused, with carvings and jewelry made from jade from the province’s north. Then pop into Canadian-created Little Blue House for funny flannel sleepwear for the whole family.

GOVERNMENT Street

MOSS Street To explore the quieter, residential side of historic Victoria, head to Moss Street. Start at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, just off Fort Street. The gallery’s permanent collection includes works by Emily Carr, the trailblazing Victoria painter. Nearby Craigdarroch Castle, built for coal baron Robert Dunsmuir, offers a look at the opulence and splendour enjoyed by the very rich in the Gilded Age. Upper Moss is in Rockland, Victoria’s Nob Hill in the late 19th Century. Stone mansions nestle alongside Tudor Revival cottages, designed by Victorianera starchitects like Francis Rattenbury and Samuel Maclure.

Heading down Moss toward the Salish Sea, you enter Fairfield. Mansions share the street with smaller homes built in the early 1900s as the city grew. Take time at Moss and Richardson to admire Old Ben Mosser. This sequoia tree, apparently a gift from California 170 years ago, towers 50 metres over the neighbourhood.

If it’s a summer Saturday, be sure to stop at the Moss Street Market at the corner of Fairfield Road. There’s local produce, arts and crafts and fashion, food stands and live music. It’s a great place to pick up supplies for a picnic. And if you continue down Moss to Dallas Road and Clover Point Park on the ocean, you’ll have the perfect spot to enjoy it.

ART FOR THE AGES Master painter Emily Carr, many of whose works hang in the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, was a Victoria native.

JOHNSON Street If Government is the Old Town’s pulsing artery, Johnson Street is its more hidden heart. Start at Government Street and head toward the water and the fancy new lift bridge. This was where, after the 1858 gold rush saw the city’s population jump from 500 to 5,000, hotels, saloons and dance halls sprang up. Those brick buildings line the street today, and on LoJo — Lower Johnson — they house

quirky shops and restaurants with brightly painted storefronts. This is the place to come for affordable, one-of-a-kind fashion. Baggins Shoes, in a classic 1899 red-brick building (once home to a brothel), is a destination for shoe buffs, with an amazing selection of Converse, Vans and Dr. Martens. A few steps down the street, Market Square occupies a half a block and houses more than 35 eateries and shops — a tradition that started when Giacomi Bossi opened his liquor and grocery store here in 1883. Today, stores like Oscar and Libby’s — “jam-packed with all that is weird, wacky, and a wee bit whimsical” — offer an eclectic shopping experience. Food choices are even more varied; you can pretty much eat your way through the world’s cuisines. Just across Johnson is Il Terrazzo Ristorante, a local favourite for Italian cuisine in a romantic courtyard setting. If you have room, follow dinner with dessert at Mosi Gelato; or make a special trip – it’s worth it!

FOR PEDESTRIANS ONLY You won’t find a street like Fan Tan Alley anywhere else in Canada. It’s the narrowest street in the country, less than a metre wide at its skinniest point, creating the sense you’re in a red-brick canyon. In the city’s early days, it was home to gambling houses and opium dens that served the Chinese population drawn by the gold rush. Today, the alley is home to small, independent and fascinating shops selling everything from conversation-starting umbrellas to gourmet ice cream. Another must-visit for pedestrian explorers is Trounce Alley, home to tapa bars and one-of-a-kind shops, still lit at night by original gaslights more than 125 years old.

Oak Bay Avenue sports several art emporiums including the Avenue Gallery (above); learn about the area's colourful history at the Sidney Museum (top right) on Beacon Avenue

OAK BAY Avenue For years the District of Oak Bay, just east of Victoria proper, took quiet pride in claims it was “more British than the British.” Even today its main drag, Oak Bay Avenue, resembles an old-fashioned high street in an English village. More recently, the municipality has gone for public art in a big way, which should whet your appetite for its galleries. The Avenue Gallery features contemporary Canadian art in a beautiful space, offering everything from jewelry to sculpture to paintings. Winchester Galleries, just down the avenue, features works by emerging artists and masters. (Don’t

miss the upstairs space with works by Newfoundland printmaker David Blackwood.) If you’ve worked up an appetite, don’t worry. Vis-a-Vis offers a menu based on the best from local producers and, next door, The Penny Farthing Public House offers great food and two dozen beers on tap. White Heather Tea Room offers classic afternoon tea, with sandwiches and sweets served on tiered trays. Save room though. Rogers’ Chocolates, in a handsome heritage building on the avenue, serves up amazing confections. (Queen Elizabeth II is reportedly partial to its vanilla creams.)

Anglophiles may feel transported to the old country at the White Heather Tea Room (above left) and the Penny Farthing Public House (above right) on Oak Bay Avenue

DARE TO COMPARE The Oak Bay Beach Hotel, just off the avenue, hosts craft beer tastings featuring a wide sampling of local brews.

WORD ON THE STREET Browsing bibliophiles can find six bookstores in the space of just a few blocks in scenic Sidney.

Sidney-by-the-Sea lies 30 minutes north of downtown by car, an hour by public transit, with views of the Salish Sea and farm fields along the way. (It’s near The Butchart Gardens and the Swartz Bay BC Ferries terminal.) Once a rough-and-tumble fishing, logging and, during Prohibition, rum-running port, Sidney today is a prime retirement and vacation destination, one that proudly moves at a slower pace. Beacon Avenue, the main street running to the waterfront pier and parks, reflects that transformation. With wide sidewalks, flowers and public art, it invites visitors to explore the shops, restaurants and galleries. Start with its unofficial name: Sidney Booktown. Beacon Avenue’s bookstores offer everything from antiquarian finds to new releases to secondhand bargains. There’s more than books of course, with clothing stories, gift shops, art galleries and restaurants and the Sidney Museum. Just off Beacon on First Street, there’s the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea, an aquarium with more than 160 species of marine life. A few steps farther along First, Victoria Distillers offers tours and tasting sessions in a beautiful waterfront building. Finally, you can’t leave without exploring the waterfront, with its fishing pier, pubs, restaurants and parks.

Victoria has moderate temperatures yearround. The average monthly rainfall in winter is 13.5 centimetres (5.3 inches) and in the summer is less than 2.5 centimetres (1 inch). Compare that to Seattle’s average monthly winter rainfall of 34.3 centimetres (13.5 inches) and 8.6 centimetres (3.39 inches) in summer. Victoria has low humidity and almost constant offshore breezes, which keep summer days from becoming too hot. Summer evenings cool off, and a sweater or light jacket is recommended. Victoria boasts an average of 2,193 hours of sunshine yearly and an eightmonth frost-free season. Although winters are mild, warmer clothing is recommended November through March.
