ASHEVILLE’S ARTS COMMUNITY is thriving, and a simple stroll through the city puts colorful murals, intricate mosaics, and bronze sculptures all on full display. For a visual history of Asheville, head under the Lexington Avenue Bridge, where a multi-wall mural by six local artists depicts Western North Carolina history, including indigenous American tribes, Appalachian pioneers, and African-American industrial laborers. In the River Arts District, the Foundation Walls project gives street artists the ultimate canvas for their colorful works. At Pack Square Park, the Golden Threads mural commemorates local musicians and the annual Shindig on the Green outdoor concerts. And, at the Triangle Park Mural downtown, you’ll find the collaborative work of more than 100 volunteers paying tribute to the vibrant community and history of the area known as The Block. Just be sure to also gaze upward as you walk, especially near the Aloft Hotel, where the Daydreamer, a tile mosaic in shades of blue and brick red, nearly pops off the wall to those below. For a more comprehensive guide to more than 30 sculptures throughout Asheville, follow the two-hour Asheville Urban Trail self-guided walking tour. Along with a printable map, an audio version of the tour is available. Visit ExploreAsheville.com/urbantrail 12 | 2019 official visitor guide

Salutations & Suds Asheville breweries inspire mind, body, and heart.

Yoga at Archetype Brewing

ASHEVILLE BREWERIES offer more than just a spot to sip a frothy pint. Here, creativity extends beyond brewing with local ingredients and funky yeast strains— you can attend a lecture, get in a workout, create art, or adopt a new furry friend, all while partaking in one of our city’s favorite drinks. Check brewery websites and social media feeds for event specifics, dates, and times. MIND: Invigorate your brain by attending a lecture, class, or presentation. Some breweries even host improv, open mic, and storytelling nights.

HEART: Join a painting class, participate in a musical jam session, or adopt an animal in need— all while quaffing beer.

BODY: Work your muscles at a yoga, dance, or boot camp brewery class.

The Biltmore Factor An inside look at America’s largest private residence.

WELCOME HOME! At more than 175,000 square feet, the 250-room Biltmore House—designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt for a young George Vanderbilt—is a sight not to be missed. And throughout 2019 there’s plenty of opportunity for an intimate look. From February 8 through May 27, you’re invited to A Vanderbilt House Party—The Gilded Age, an exhibit that brings to life how the Vanderbilts entertained during the early 1900s. Clothing reproduced from the Vanderbilts’ wardrobes will be on display,

and a new immersive audio guide will detail estate parties hosted by George, his wife Edith, and daughter Cornelia. Outside, the 8,000-acre estate’s exquisite gardens, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, are equally impressive, with sensational spring colors on full display during Biltmore Blooms, April 1 through May 23. Don’t want to leave? With lots to see and do, it’s easy to extend your visit. Just don’t head out without tasting the award-winning wines at Biltmore Winery or diving into outdoor adventures like fly-fishing, horseback riding, and even attending a Land Rover driving school.

MUSIC TO YOUR EARS ASHEVILLE SOUNDS PRETTY SWEET

Asheville is a city with a sound all its own and with performances humming around the clock. Start your day with an acoustic session at one of the city’s cafés, where you can expect to find toast and a jam session, or hit a trendy brunch spot in West Asheville for breakfast with a side of blues. Come afternoon, head downtown, where local musicians turn sidewalks into stages. You might catch Abby the Spoon Lady, with her toes tapping service bells, or feel the reverberations of a didgeridoo just around the corner. While you’re out, be sure to check out local instrument shops, as well as the world-famous Moog Music Factory (they offer free tours). When evening falls, check the lineup at ExploreAsheville.com/music for performance details at music halls and outdoor concert venues. Of course, Explore Asheville Radio lets you stream the sounds of our city from anywhere (listen at ExploreAsheville.com/radio), so you can always have a bit of Asheville in your earbuds, no matter your locale.

THE ASHEVILLE ART MUSEUM REBUILDS AND EXPANDS.

Art lovers, rejoice—after more than two years of renovations, the Asheville Art Museum is set to reopen late spring 2019. The fresh-faced institution will showcase some 70 percent more art—including American art of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as an impressive collection of Appalachian art—and feature a rooftop sculpture terrace and café, a hands-on space for families, and an outdoor plaza. Opened in 1948, the small but mighty museum has seen a variety of homes, moving in 1992 into the 1920s Italian Renaissance-style building fronting Pack Square, where it helped revitalize downtown into the thriving cultural center it is today. And, after the building's much-needed update, the new look promises to continue to stand as a showpiece in the heart of downtown. ExploreAsheville.com | 15

Spring

SPRING IN THE SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS is a rush—from the roar of waterfalls to the riotous blooms of native wildflowers. Here in the world’s oldest mountains, trilliums and daffodils bud first with early pops of color, followed by a floral fantasia of mountain laurel and redbuds that peaks in a haze of rhododendrons carpeting high balds such as Craggy Gardens. In town, gardens transform into petal paradises: Notably, Biltmore Blooms ushers in the season with 96,000 tulips and more than 1,000 orchids, while the North Carolina Arboretum features an Appalachia-inspired patchwork quilt garden and native azalea collection. Sweetening the season are local honey, Asheville Beer Week, and culinary festivals celebrating cheese, bread, and vegan bites. There’s also a massive herb festival, a showcase for outdoor gear makers, and a parade of festive street parties around town, including downtown’s Art in the Park and the historic neighborhood of Montford’s annual arts and music celebration.

Summer

IT’S A TIME-HONORED TRADITION to head to the hills to rise above the summer swelter. Refresh body and spirit in the cool mountain breezes or with a dip in a secluded swimming hole. Experience the thrill of a natural waterslide at Sliding Rock in Pisgah National Forest or the adrenaline rush of whitewater rafting. Try stand-up paddleboarding or a locally made Bellyak (a belly-down kayak), or join locals on a lazy inner-tube float down the French Broad River, pulling out for a pint right on the riverbank. Taste our regional abundance at one of the city’s many popular tailgate and farmers markets. Enjoy the extended evening light at one of the city’s popular summer concert series, from traditional mountain music at downtown’s historic Shindig on the Green and national touring acts at Biltmore to brewery performances big and small. No matter what’s on tap, summer nights here pulse to their own frenetic beat.

Fall cycling

COME AUTUMN, Asheville pulls out all the stops. Brisk mountain air cues one of the country’s most dramatic—and longest—displays of fall foliage, thanks to tree biodiversity and elevation variety. Brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges unspool down the slopes to the Asheville valley over the course of several weeks, beginning with the highest elevations in late September. Joy rides here are never more delightful, whether following the curves of the Blue Ridge Parkway or winding along bucolic country roads. Get further immersed in all that scenic splendor while fly-fishing, zip-lining, or hiking. The spectacle sets a colorful backdrop to other seasonal pursuits, too. Harvest time at area family farms means apples to pick, pumpkins to carve, corn mazes to navigate, and hot cider doughnuts to devour. Good times roll every weekend with Oktoberfest and beer and music festivals. And creativity flourishes at the biannual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands—among the Southeast’s largest craft fairs—and at art shows in neighboring Weaverville and Black Mountain.

Winter

COME WINTER, Asheville crackles with charm. Cozy up next to an epic fireplace or rooftop fire pit, stay toasty with a steaming cup of tea or foamy latte, linger over a candlelit dinner and a warming cocktail, or hunker down in a cozy mountain cabin with a private hot tub. Get fired up over a rousing musical or theater performance, and turn up the heat as you groove to live jazz or tap your toes to homegrown bluegrass. spectacular salad or towering plate of barbecue is more than sustenance here; it’s a journey from the farmers’ hands to your plate. Many vegetables and fruits are harvested in the morning and served in restaurants that same night. A seemingly simple meal is the culmination of a tremendous amount of effort when mushrooms are hand-foraged and a cheesemaker milks the cows herself. Appalachian ingredients like sorghum syrup and wild ramps are transformed into fine-dining experiences, as well as wholesome meals that feed the soul. Adventurous eaters will find new flavors at every turn, as well as comfort foods that make you feel right at home. It’s no surprise Asheville is called Foodtopia. With entire menus that reflect the bounty of the region, sitting down to a meal here is a way to join the local food ecosystem while digging into some truly delicious fare.

“ WHOLE-HOG BARBECUE WAS BORN IN THE CAROLINAS.”

HOG WILD Pigs reign supreme in Western North Carolina. They thrive in the mountains and are an essential part of Asheville’s food culture. “Whole-hog barbecue was born in the Carolinas,” says Elliott Moss, James Beard nominated chef and pitmaster at Buxton Hall BBQ. The whole-hog barbecue method

harkens back to the tradition of using the entire animal. Many modern chefs go beyond breakfast bacon and pulledpork sandwiches by finding creative ways to use parts of the animal that might otherwise go to waste. A local farm supplies the restaurant with whole hogs, a symbiotic relationship

that provides the farmers with steady income and gives chefs like Moss access to the entire animal. In addition to classic pulled pork, Moss uses every part of the pig to make hash, stock, and gravy. “I’m getting the whole pig, so I know where every piece of it comes from,” he says. “It’s something special.” ExploreAsheville.com | 35

“ OUR REGION IS FILLED WITH SO MANY WILD DELICACIES.” WILLIAM DISSEN,

executive chef, Market Place Restaurant

FOUND IN THE FOREST Wild foods are one of the best-kept secrets in the southern Appalachian Mountains. A stunning array of mushrooms, wild leeks called ramps, and a multitude of greens and herbs thrive on the forest floor. Asheville chefs make the most of this abundance by partnering with foragers who bring them delicacies straight from the earth. 36 | 2019 official visitor guide

“Foraged ingredients are an important part of the Asheville food system, and of our Appalachian cuisine,” says William Dissen, executive chef and owner of the Market Place Restaurant. “They connect us back to Native Americans, who foraged our biodiverse region for wild foods to sustain themselves.”

Local farm-to-table menus evolve with the seasons, starting with ramps in early spring and ending with hen of the woods mushrooms in the fall. “Our region is filled with so many wild delicacies,” Dissen says, “and as a chef, I want to be able to find the bounty of the season to put on the table at our restaurants.”

GARDEN GROWN Behind every head of cauliflower, baby beet, or bunch of greens, you’ll find a farmer who tends the soil, plants the seeds, and cares for the crops long before they hit the plate. In Asheville, Sunil Patel is one such farmer. The cofounder of Patchwork Urban Farms, Patel partners with landowners around the city to create plots of urban farmland, sometimes in people’s own backyards. Founded in 2015, today Patel and his business partner, Teddy Pitsoikos, manage 15 different “patches” around Asheville, each producing herbs, produce, flowers, and eggs for CSA (a.k.a. community-supported agriculture) members, local restaurants, and Patel’s own pop-up dinners, which he hosts at different cafés and breweries, as well as on a patch he farms just north of downtown. “I used to think of farming as a solitary endeavor,” says Patel, but there’s a network forming around what we’re doing, and having these relationships with our neighbors is really cool.”

FRESH FROM THE DAIRY The art of cheesemaking is alive and well in Asheville. Visit a cheese shop and learn how curds are made, or snack along the WNC Cheese Trail, where participating creameries open their door for tours and tastes—it’s all a great way to support cheesemakers who care deeply about the cows that provide the milk. “Part of what brings people to Asheville is the amazing food that is deeply rooted in this community,” says Jennifer Perkins, cheesemaker and owner of Looking Glass Creamery. “Food here is about more than just being prepared well

on a plate. It extends to the mountains and fields, the streams, the farms, and the community of people working together to make it all happen.” Cheese is a direct reflection of its place of origin on her farm. The cows are born and milked there, often by someone in the Perkins family, and their feed is grown on the property. All the while, the creamery’s world-class cheese is made in an underground aging cave built into a hillside and sold in dozens of shops and restaurants. It’s a beautiful reflection of the interconnectedness of Asheville food culture.

Their collaborations can be found in bakeries throughout the region, including OWL Bakery in West Asheville, where owners Maia Surdam and Susannah Gebhart bake pastries and breads with grains like spelt and rye. “Locally milled grains ensure that the flour is fresher and more nutritious,” says Surdam, “and it more likely reflects the flavors of where we live.” Indulge in a field-fresh loaf or rye pastry made with seasonal fruit at an array of local bakeries and support the local grain movement with every bite. Sure, you can still catch an art show at the YMI Cultural Center, marvel at the mural in Triangle Park, or worship at a spirited Sunday service at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Asheville’s historic African-American business district known as “the Block.” But over the past several decades, these experiences have become increasingly rare, as urban

Scenes from this moonshine-centered crime flick were shot along Highway 19 near Asheville and at Lake Lure, as well as in what is now the River Arts District in Asheville.

HOW TO SPEND A DAY soaking up Asheville’s artistic scene? Charlie Flynn-McIver, the artistic director and co-founder of Asheville-based NC Stage Company, has a few ideas. “I’d pick a hike for the day, either north or south on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I love Black Balsam—it has great vistas, and you can make it as long or short as you want, plus it’s a beautiful drive. I’d hit the trail early to be back before lunchtime so I could check out some of the funky art galleries in the River Arts District. Then, I’d have a beer with my lunch—I earned it after that hike. In the afternoon, I’d take a tour that highlights the area’s artistic heritage. I love the Hood Huggers tour; it’s an informative look at Asheville’s African-American heritage. For dinner, I’d make my way to a restaurant downtown, and then see a play at one of the nearby theaters. If the weather is nice, I’d end the night with a drink at a riverside bar. I like starting and ending the day in nature.” ExploreAsheville.com | 51

Water Works MAKE A SPLASH AT ASHEVILLE’S WATER ATTRACTIONS.

When the weather heats up, there are plenty of ways to cool down in Asheville’s waters. Just be sure to use caution around waterfalls’ quick currents and steep ledges—safety first! Both Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Forest harbor dozens of waterfalls with shallow swimming holes, like Looking Glass and Hooker Falls.

At Sliding Rock, brave swimmers barrel down nature’s waterslide and into the deep basin below.

The French Broad River threads through Asheville and offers opportunities for respite or aerobics, like tubing, SUPing, kayaking, or Asheville’s own bellyaking.

Even city slicke rs can cool off in Pack Square Park’s Splasheville, where 21 jets surprise tykes with bursts of water . ExploreAsheville.com | 53

FAMILY

Jennifer Pharr Davis heads outdoors with her littles.

Kids Play

A LOCAL EXPERT TALKS TIPS FOR GETTING OUTDOORS WITH THE YOUNGINS. Jennifer Pharr Davis—Appalachian Trail record-holder and mom of two—has all the ins you need to get out around Asheville’s outdoor attractions with your little ones.

WHERE TO GO: The NC Arboretum, Carl Sandburg Home, or Catawba Falls, which offer a variety of trail options and engaging features like waterfalls, educational displays, and even a goat farm. WHAT TO PACK: An extra layer for chillier elevations, a rain jacket, and a first-aid kit stocked with kid-specific medicine like children’s Benadryl and Tylenol. WHAT TO SEE: Wildflowers in summer and colorful leaves in fall. You’ll also find salamanders and crawfish in

the creeks and streams; just make sure you preface the trip with a lesson on respecting wildlife. WATCH OUT FOR: Pharr Davis cautions parents against taking kids to trails with cliffs or ledges, as well as swimming in waterfalls, where currents are strong and rocks are slick. BEST ADVICE: “Make it their hike, and don’t necessarily go into it with a specific destination; instead, plan to have a good experience with your family and be open to how your kids feel.” Visit ExploreAsheville.com/family

VACATION BUCKET LIST 8 W AY S TO E X P LO R E

Make memories to last a lifetime with these quintessential, kid-friendly Asheville experiences. 1. Experience histories both real and

mythic at Biltmore Estate, current home of the New York Times best-selling young adult series Serafina.

2. The best views of the mountains are

bird’s-eye; see things from their perspective via one of the area’s ziplines.

3. Look for native flora and fauna in one of the area’s nearby forests, or download a geocaching app to see what others have hidden along the trails. 4. Asheville’s breweries offer some-

thing for everyone: pints for parents and, almost always, board and lawn games for kids.

5. Catch the Asheville Tourists minor

league baseball team at McCormick Field, or watch the Asheville City Soccer Club just up the hill.

6. Check out the WNC Nature Center, where 42 acres of exhibits bring visitors close to indigenous wildlife.

7. Enjoy a pleasure cruise—or rather, chug—on a steam or diesel engine via the region’s historic railroads. 8. Bad weather? Stay inside at one

of the city’s experiential spots, like a rock-climbing center, a trampoline park, a pinball museum, a board game café, or a science museum.

GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING STEEP CANYON RANGERS FIND THEIR TUNE IN WNC. AMERICANA/BLUEGRASS BAND Steep Canyon Rangers has toured the world, but “the history of this music is bound up in the Blue Ridge Mountains,” says member Graham Sharp (banjo, guitar, harmonica). “And it’s always a great moment in our travels when the ridges come into view and you know you are home.”

There’s definitely something in the water in Asheville. Western North Carolina is grateful to have an abundance of clean, pure water—an essential ingredient that comprises more than 90 percent of beer. Much of Western North Carolina’s water filters through mountain rock, one of many attributes that breweries look for when they’re deciding where to expand a national brand. Excellent water is also attractive to small craft brewers who want only the best ingredients in their beer. “Brewers tell me that when they come to check out the area and test the water, they are blown away by its purity,” says Anne Fitten Glenn, local beer writer and author of Western North Carolina Beer, “and that becomes an important factor in deciding to brew here.” Lucky for you, the region boasts more than 60 breweries at which you can drink that water—in beer form. Add that to the ample opportunities to taste the bounties of Foodtopia, and you’ll soon understand why Asheville’s flurry of local ingredients makes our food scene one that’s unlike any other.

“Their music is unlike any other.”

ASHEVILLE AFTER HOURS CITY NIGHTLIFE S H I N E S B R I G H T.

NO MATTER HOW you spend your daylight hours, Asheville offers plenty of ways to keep the party going once night falls. For easy, no-frills fun after dark, you can slide into one of the cideries, breweries, or distilleries in the walkable South Slope neighborhood, belt out karaoke under string lights, or try your own material at open-mic comedy. Or, let others do the entertaining: Take your seat on the big purple bus for a haunted comedy tour or listen to an old-time jam session. Grab a slice and play pool, or try some Japanese-American fusion pub grub underneath the stars. If romance is more your tune, Asheville can help set the mood. Watch the sunset from a rooftop bar, then get cozy over tapas, tacos, or tortellini. For dessert, try handmade truffles from some of the city’s artisanal chocolatiers, or treat each other to gelato or handcrafted ice cream sandwiches. After dessert, steal away to a hole-in-the-wall wine bar, or head out to one of our many LBGTQ-friendly locales for a nightcap and dancing. And for those hungry for a taste of the city’s nighttime food scene, get ready to eat your way around the world without leaving city limits. If your visit coincides with one of Asheville’s many food-based festivals in Pack Square Park, awesome. And if not, plenty of opportunities still abound: Sit down for a tasting menu, grab Indian street food to-go, or queue up at the food trucks parked around the city. Then, take your seat for a night at the theater, or belly up at one of our craft cocktail lounges and drink in the spirited sips of the city’s top mixologists.

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS

Biscuits reign supreme in Asheville, and every restaurant has its own take on this Southern staple. From buttery biscuits the size of dinner plates to flaky little pillows sprinkled with sugar, there’s no wrong way to enjoy a biscuit here, especially if it’s on the side of local eggs and bacon. If you’re looking for a lighter start to the day, you can drink in your serving of fruits and vegetables at one of the city’s many juice and smoothie cafés. Coffee shops in almost every neighborhood steam up almond- or oat-milk lattes, alongside offerings of fresh muffins and pastries.

LET’S DO LUNCH

A hearty midday meal is a great way to explore international flavors. From inventive tacos that combine flavors from around the globe to food trucks and cafés that dish up traditional fare, there are plenty of ways to experience the world with your fork. If you’d rather dig into a classic Carolina meal, fill your belly at a local barbecue joint. Western North Carolina embraces many styles of ’cue, so you can find almost anything you’re looking for here. Try whole-hog barbecue for a taste of tradition, or get messy with saucy ribs and sides.

ASHEVILLE TO GO

Complete your drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway or hike in the mountains with a picnic full of local ingredients. Pack a basket with gourmet local cheeses, handcrafted charcuterie, and seasonal fruit from a farmers market, or visit a bakery for fresh pastries or bagel sandwiches to take on your adventure.

LOCAL FARE AFTER DARK

When it comes to dinner, Asheville does itself proud. Multiple local chefs have been recognized as semifinalists for a James Beard Award, and the area’s rich farm-totable culture means the freshest, most sustainable ingredients reach your plate. Save room for casual late-night fare like pizza, burgers, and wings. Grab a local beer, meet new friends, and see where the night takes you.

in a way that’s never been done before! Coming September 12–15, 2019, Chow Chow: An Asheville Culinary Event takes over our vibrant corner of Appalachia, celebrating chefs, makers, and culinary collaborators. Come be a part of it, with grand tasting events, chef demos, and meaningful hands-on experiences eager to connect you to the stories behind Asheville’s creative table. 68 | 2019 official visitor guide

Sugar Rush Indulge your sweet tooth in Asheville. A VISIT TO THE MOUNTAINS has never been sweeter—or more unexpected. Looking for doughnuts glazed with smoked peaches and bourbon? Meet the bakers and watch them fry them up just for you. Or, if pie is more your thing, there’s no need to pick just one. Try a “pie flight” to taste several mini slices of pie in one sitting. Of course, no vacation is complete without local chocolate, and there are plenty of shops to choose from, and even chocolate factory tours you can take. Ice cream more your jam?

Asheville dishes up scoops featuring produce from nearby farms, in flavors like blueberry kale and beet swirl. For the lactose-leery, here you’ll find nondairy options made with pepita, hemp, or coconut milk, with some shops even sandwiching their dairyfree offerings between two freshly baked cookies. Most bakeries also have gluten-free pastries and desserts, and many menus include gluten-free options like flourless chocolate tortes. Really, no matter your sweet tooth, Asheville’s got you covered.
