WELCOME I can barely believe another yearling sale is upon us. Perth Magic Millions has had an extremely busy but successful year. The winners have flowed from the sale ring and the West Australian graduates are certainly making their presence felt locally and Nationally. This year’s highly successful Magic Millions Pinjarra Race Day again proved the experience and quality of Raceday is a magnet for our racing community and friends. The Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic winner VALOUR ROAD went on to win the time-honoured Karrakatta Plate G2. The state’s other twoyear-old group race, the Sires Produce G3, was won by another Perth Sale graduate in LORDHELPMERUN. With the breeding industry replenishing and improving broodmare bands along with adding to the stallion line up, I am sure it won’t be long before these boys will put their hands up to be successful sires in the future.

Millions, in conjunction with RWWA, have introduced a Women’s Bonus for 2019 sale graduates to the Magic

Top Quality

NEW Beginnings FOR

–12 –

Much anticipation surrounds the upcoming 2019 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale with a quality catalogue to welcome an exciting new home for Australia’s number one thoroughbred sales company. The auction, to be held on Monday February 18 and Tuesday February 19, is the first to be held at the new home of Magic Millions WA, the Swan Valley. Builders have been busy over recent months to construct the new purpose built selling complex which over the next couple of years will become a first class thoroughbred sales venue. Western Australian breeders are excited with the new developments and accordingly have provided the catalogue an outstanding selection of future racetrack stars. Some 310 yearlings have been catalogued for the 2019 Perth Yearling Sale featuring the progeny of 76 individual sires, eight of which are represented by members of their first crop. Mungrup Stud’s I’m All the Talk, a Skyline Stakes winning son of Stratum, is the most represented sire in the catalogue with 25 yearlings slated to go under the hammer. He is one of the eight first crop sires with progeny in the auction. Stakes winning mares with yearlings catalogued include Bantry Bay, Playcidium Mint, Bella D’Amour, Calico Blue, Cheri Cheval, Creatrix, Delta Gee, Even Astar, Hidden Wonder, O’flirty, Peg’s Pride, Red Hot Sax, Russian Playmate, Single Spice, Anacarde, Ebony Magic and Snacking. Through trainer Danny Morton, Jarrad received a massive opportunity to join Champion Trainer Peter Moody in Melbourne after winning an apprentices race at Moonee Valley. It was a big step to be riding in Melbourne and a massive learning experience. Ascot is the track he loves most where he says “you can win from anywhere” and his favourite horse is Rock Magic on whom Jarrad has won seven stakes races. The Gangemis have been great supporters of his. The Magic Millions feature races in WA are a very happy hunting ground for young Noske, having won four so far. BORN to Race

Like anybody in the workforce, time away is vitally important and Jarrad has other interests. Being something of a thrill seeker the polite young man has a passion for motorbikes having already owned two Harleys. And lately for no good reason, particularly not a sensible one, he has gotten a bug for rodeo. He has had lessons at a day school and ridden in the saddle bronc event and wants

to do more of it. I’m not sure it is a great mix for jockeying, but fun all the same. Winning a Group One is still the main aim but battling weight makes it tough, particularly if you want to win premierships, but the competitive spirit is very much alive - his sister Jerry is one who definitely gets no favours in the

The advent of the modern day lightweight saddles has been a great help to jockeys and Jarrad is a fan. “They take a little time getting used to but you really feel a part of the horse as opposed to riding in the big bulky saddles of the past.” But the new whip rules have been expensive especially for someone known for his vigour and strength

Long-term he hopes to set up a cattle property so the winners need to keep flowing. “I’ve even run a few calves in the backyard as you’ve got to start somewhere.” He likes to study form, follows breeding and a position in the bloodstock industry would not be out of the question and even becoming a trainer later on.

Big Risk Reaps

BIG REWARDS “We were so fortunate to get two sires like Scenic and Blackfriars.” –50 –

Some 22 years after securing Scenic and 17 years after landing Blackfriars at their Muchea stud farm Scenic Lodge, general manager Jeremy Smith is still in awe at his family’s good fortune. If not for the impact Danehill and the big migration of northern hemisphere sires into NSW and Victoria, Scenic would have stayed in Victoria. (He returned for a season at Collingrove on loan from Scenic Lodge, then Durham Lodge). Blackfriars, a son of Danehill, won the blue riband event of the 1999 Victoria Derby (beating Shogun Lodge and Diatribe) at Flemington and appeared destined for a bright career at Robert Sangster’s Collingrove Stud in Victoria. Popular Geraldton-born bloodstock agent and Lindsay Park’s racing manager at the time, Mark Pilkington, was against Blackfriars being sold at all. Mark was a key-broker in the Scenic deal with Jeremy’s father and stud founder David Smith. Collingrove already had Danehill Dancer standing at stud. To add another son of Danehill, who would be competing for broodmares on the same property did not make commercial sense. Jeremy remembers the process fondly, “We were able to negotiate to buy Blackfriars because of our association with Collingrove through securing Scenic. We did have to take a risk with Blackfriars because we paid I think about $1 million for him and he was an unproven sire. He was a Victoria Derby winner and there were knocks on them being successful stallions. There were also knocks on staying sons of Danehill being successful at stud. We had to support Blackfriars heavily with our own mares in the early days. If he hadn’t had those mares in the first few seasons he would not have had the numbers flowing through. He started fairly well and then there were a few questions about him before he started up again with the winners flowing through. With the winners came the better-bred mares from outside and the bigger books.” Smith recalled Blackfriars’ biggest single season at stud was serving 182 mares.

In fact, we encourage people to slow down, take time and relax, or run the risk of missing one of life’s greatest adventures. It doesn’t take long for visitors to adapt to our slower pace of life, to take advantage of the chance to spend time with those closest to them, to reconnect, and to reignite common interests and passions.

Our passion comes through in everything we do; our food, our wine, our art, our landscape. We consist of the ultimate collection of artisans just waiting to fire up your sense of beauty, of taste, and of fun. Understated but not underrated, the Swan Valley is a popular must-visit destination. Known as a food lover’s haven, a wine connoisseur’s delight and a naturalist’s dream. Visitors are spoilt for choice by the raw, natural environment and the wonderful people that live and work here. A visit to the Swan Valley will leave you with lasting memories and a longing to return.

THINGS TO DO IN THE SWAN VALLEY • Explore the Cider & Ale Trail, which takes you to the region’s nine specialty ale and cider producers. • Or try the Sweet Temptations Trail which caters to the sweet tooth in us all, with nougat, pastries, cakes and fortified wines! • Look out for free tastings of local preserves, dried fruit, chocolate and nuts. • Take a boat cruise from Perth City along the Swan River to the Swan Valley. • Take a wander around Guildford’s historic shopping precincts. • Stay a little longer and let one of the many accommodation venues look after you in style. Consider the brand new Colony at Mandoon, the historic Moonburra Stay or a luxury retreat to relax in style. • Look out for roadside stalls which have the freshest seasonal locally-grown produce available. Think fresh asparagus, table grapes, tangerines, citrus and berries in season. • Book a Swan Valley tour at the Visitor Centre. • Visit the many art and craft galleries and artist’s studios. • Explore the Swan Valley a little differently on a horse-drawn wagon ride.
