WELCOME What an exciting year it has been with WA racehorses continuing to shine brightly wherever they have competed and have brought a massive focus onto our local product. Champion sire Blackfriars, with his last crop of yearlings to be presented this year, continues his dominance including siring two Group One winners this spring in Black Heart Bart and Come Play With Me. We are also delighted our Perth 2018 graduate Dig Deep strode to victory in the time-honoured Karrakatta Plate.
Magic Millions will continue to strive to support and grow the industry in WA. Our mission is to make a difference. I hope you are all able to enjoy our events including our race and sale season. Best wishes are extended to all the breeders, sellers, buyers and spectators alike and we look forward to catching up with you all in the Swan Valley.
Another reason to be happy this year is our flagship Pinjarra Magic Millions Ladies Raceday, which is continuing to grow and develop. We are pleased that the whole industry, including racegoers far and wide, are able to enjoy and promote WA breeding and racing in this state and across Australia. Our raceday is likewise very proud of Bernadette May who won our Fashions on the Field and went forward to represent the Peel region in the final of The Races WA Fashions on the Field. Bernadette was judged the deserved winner, collecting an incredible prize of a once in a lifetime trip to Royal Ascot 2020 plus $10,000 in spending money.
Cheers
The new MM WA Racing Women’s Bonus had an incredible response at this years 2019 yearling sales with over 30 graduates being registered as all female syndicates racing for the bonus at Pinjarra in February. What a race that will be!! Stage 2 of the Swan Valley Magic Millions sales complex has been underway this year and we are sure all will be suitably impressed and excited to have this facility for the future. A heartfelt thank you must go to Katie & Gerry Harvey for their massive financial contribution to our industry. This year’s catalogue was very competitive to put together and I congratulate our breeders for their effort in producing an excellent selection of yearlings. With a number of WA first season stallions represented as well as the tried and true, this year’s catalogue promises to be an exciting edition with the added bonus of interstate stallions.

2019 WINNERS Di Parsons and nine of her friends were keen to get involved in owning a racehorse, but didn’t know where to start. The group of five schoolmates and their husbands regularly got together for a day at the races at Ascot to chase the thrill of backing a winner. Their dilemma was solved when Mrs Parsons saw an advertisement in The West Australian for the Own the Dream competition, with a 20 per cent share in a racehorse and two years of training fees covered up for grabs. “We’ve got a gang of us that go to the races quite often and we had spoken about owning a horse,” Mrs Parsons said. “When I saw the ad in the paper I thought this is the way to do it.” The group joined forces to create their team Double Bangers, named after their betting formula of backing horses with two word names starting with the same letter.
30
They were among more than 1000 entrants to attend nine events, which not only increased their chances of winning the prize, but provided insight into aspects of the racing industry they weren’t aware of. On day one of the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale in February, the Double Bangers were announced as the winning team. “We were excited about possibly winning, but thought it was a long shot,” Mrs Parsons said. “It was amazing. None of us had owned a horse before, so to be thrown in like that was great. The competition was a great way to get introduced to racing.” The Double Bangers selected a Magnus colt, to be trained by Trevor Andrews and owned by the Belhus Racing Syndicate, from a list of eligible yearlings for the competition that were sold at the Magic Millions sale.

Father Len was one of Perth’s leading trainers and was renowned for his ability to successfully travel horses like Muros who he trained to win the 1978 Brisbane Cup, defeating the great Ming Dynasty, a dual Caulfield Cup (1977, 1980) winner in the process. “Growing up Dad always had a strong team,” says Danny. “I always wanted to ride so I became an apprentice to Dad and got a good opportunity through his stable and I had my share of success riding for him.” Unfortunately like many young riders weight became an issue and Danny was forced to consider new career options. Embittered by the cards life had suddenly dealt him given all he had ever wanted to do was be a jockey, Danny chose to leave the industry and went to work on a cattle station in the Northern Territory . “I loved being in the Territory. And doing that I was then able to come back as Dad’s foreman. I worked for him for probably 10 years. Dad always enjoyed pretty good success so it was a great period. The riding stood me in good stead as if Dad had good horses I got a feel for them early. Dad had great experience travelling horses so I was the one who travelled with them and I was incredibly lucky to
“The bulk of our purchases come out of the Perth sale. Ultimately good horses come from anywhere. My bigger fish have come out of Perth though. His stable success stories include Horse of the Year, Champion Australian Sprinter and 3-time Gr 1 winner (including the Royal Ascot King’s Stand S.) Scenic Blast (an $85k Perth MM yearling sale graduate), 3-time Gr 1 winner and warhorse Scenic Shot who started an incredible 74 times and earned $3.097m (a $36k Perth MM yearling), Dainty Tess whose 14 wins and 16 placings from 39 starts included three Gr 3 wins and $1,093,650 in career earnings. She was passed in for just $30k at the 2015 MM Perth yearling sale. Amongst a number of other black type horses Danny has also trained are 3-time Gr 3 winner and multiple Gr 1 placegetter Watermans Bay (earnings $1.381m) and multiple Gr 3 winner Bliss Street. Reflecting on the time when the stable played host to both Scenic Blast and Scenic Shot Danny admits it was a bit surreal.
build that level of experience, so now I’m not at all concerned about taking the right horse interstate or overseas if the opportunity presents itself. “Dad then moved to Melbourne and we all ended up moving there with him. I had no plans of returning to Western Australia at that point as Dad retired over there but ultimately that then forced my hand to go into training and the decision to then return to Perth as I figured we would get more support over here as we hadn’t been in Melbourne very long.” Danny Morton Racing was unveiled and the stable has had considerable success with horses all hand picked by Len and Danny out of the sales ring. “Dad is great at selecting yearlings. All the best horses we have raced have been ones that Dad chose. We pick them ourselves and don’t pay massive dollars for them. Dad has a very keen eye and knows pedigrees back to front and so we have picked some very handy horses along the way.

“To have a horse like [Scenic Blast] in your stable was great. He was Australian Horse of the Year so there was nothing out there better than him. He was exceptional. Everything worked around him. And we had two exceptional horses at the same time as we had Scenic Shot as well who raced on and on. We were lucky to have two and both were bought out of the Perth Sale - they won $5m between them!” Danny said his experiences in his earlier years learning to travel horses stood him in good stead when it came to taking a horse like Scenic Blast overseas. “It was awesome being invited to Royal Ascot and then being there. Everything just fell into place. We were so well looked after. We took the right horse and it was such a buzz.” As the stable moves into a new era Danny has re-located the business to Ascot and now has 30 boxes on course. He’s excited at the new set-up and sees it as game changing.

MORTON ENTERS a new era at Ascot
“It brings us in line with other States, makes things more relevant moving forward and adds to our professionalism,” he says. “My immediate family are also involved in the business. My wife Carol runs the office and my youngest son Luke has just started full time with us. Originally it was my Dad, my brother and I and now it is the next generation so there is definitely a legacy.” Danny said Perth racing always offers owners the attraction of good prizemoney and should the right horse be found then the owners will always reap the benefits of being rewarded with good returns. “I’m excited by the team of young horses I have coming through. When you have young horses

there is always something to look forward to. It’s also worth remembering that it has always been the case that you can buy a horse out of the Perth sale that will cost you less than what you will win on a Saturday. Additionally we have also become involved with Oakland Park Stud over the past year or so and we have a great relationship with them. “In terms of older horses Man Booker is another Perth yearling sale graduate. He has won over $1m including the Gr 2 Western Australian Guineas. He sustained a slight injury a few months ago but will be back racing mid year and we have a promising stakes winning 3YO by the name of Beethoven in the stable as well. “At the end of the day I never aim to have a team big enough to attack the trainer leader board but we do well with that we have and I am known for travelling horses and we have good success with those horses and we get it right most times.”

on the western front With the passing in 2019 of studmaster Kent Johnston, Dardanup’s Taunton Vale Stud has rehomed its stallions and done its best with grief, carrying on and a top-class Magic Millions draft. Taunton Vale Stud, in the richly fertile Ferguson Valley of WA, is all the poorer without Kent Johnston. The 64-year-old studmaster died in May 2019, succumbing to aggressive brain cancer diagnosed only months before. He was an incredible man; he walked fast and with purpose, always announced himself on the phone, and possessed infinite pluck to the end. “He always said the only way he would leave this place was in a box with his boots on,” recalls his wife, Nina. “It was always his wish to die at home.” And he did. Kent Johnston was third-generation Taunton Vale stock. His grandfather had purchased the property in 1952, only 30 or so years after the Dardanup township was gazetted. The 640-acre property was later split and run as a dairy unit by Kent’s father, but the younger Johnston had other professional ideas. As a teenager, Kent was interred for a time at Widden Stud, learning the nursery ropes of thoroughbred breeding, and he returned to WA with racehorses in mind. “Kent had horses in the blood, basically,” Nina says. “He lived for them. He used to say that if it didn’t have hair on it, he wasn’t interested.” Nina and Kent had met at a Pat Parelli clinic 20 years before, on a property then owned by swimming legend Shane Gould. Kent had developed an enormous interest in both bloodstock and stock horses, the latter an inheritance from his father, and their partnership blossomed when Nina boarded her horse at Taunton Vale during her time at university. The couple was married on April Fool’s Day, 2000. “You can’t forget that date,” she says, “and he never did.” As a horseman, Kent was known well across Dardanup equestrian circles, and for 50 years he competed at the annual Brunswick Show. “I don’t think he ever missed one,” Nina recalls. “He even went to the last one when he wasn’t that well. It was like Christmas at the Brunswick Show, you’d meet everyone. It was something of a getaway for him,
and we’d always come home with a bit of a haul.” Taunton Vale’s early thoroughbred fortunes had rested on the stallion Tribu, a son of Kenmare from the stakes-producing Vain Princess. But like most operations, the stud rode the rollercoaster that is racehorse breeding. A later stallion, Bearcat, suggested he would be utterly brilliant early on, but his impact stopped suddenly and left the Johnstons wondering, where to next? That was until they chanced upon Demerit. “When we first saw him, he looked like he’d been chasing Black Caviar for months through the mud,” Nina recalls. “But I just saw something I liked, and we got him. His first year wasn’t too crash hot, but he ended up saving our lives really. It was a hell of an eight years with him. He was such a good horse to handle, and when your yearling sales go well and your stud season goes well, it just turns everything around.” Demerit was the black son of Lonhro from the Scenic mare Shame. He had raced in the Darley silks for Peter Snowden, winning the Gr3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude in 2009 and beating no less than Trusting, Manhattan Rain and Starspangledbanner. He went to Taunton Vale Stud in mid-2011, at a time when Lonhro was leading the General Sire’s list. The Johnstons debuted Demerit at $6,600 that season. In 2015, Taunton Vale bred Special Reward, a son of Demerit from Special Kiseki, and a horse that became the Johnston’s highest-priced yearling ever. He sold at the 2017 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale for $145,000, and won six of 10 starts in WA before heading across the Divide to Kris Lees. “You only breed a horse of this quality once in a lifetime,” Kent said. With the devastating news of Kent’s cancer, however, came great changes at Taunton Vale Stud. The wily studmaster, who had lived his life off the land, teaching his children to ride and drive, to tie knots and shoot straight, became so unwell that getting dressed was difficult. Instead of walking, he would
49
jump on a bicycle, propping his stick into some polypiping and heading off to the yards in his dressing gown. But cancer, as it does, claimed him on 1 May 2019, leaving behind Nina and their two young children, Drew and Anya, and four older children from previous relationships. Before he died, Kent insisted that he live long enough to see the completion of the Magic Millions complex in the Swan Valley. “Kent was a breeder through and through,” Nina says. “He was so pleased to see we finally had an excellent complex.” In partnership with majority shareholder Stephen Litton, Nina syndicated Demerit after Kent’s death. She retained a significant share when the stallion, after eight seasons at Taunton Vale, went to Rangeview Stud. But just months later, the son of Lonhro fractured a tibia in a paddock accident and was euthanized. The Redoute’s Choice stallion King’s Troop, who also stood at Taunton Vale, went onwards to Oakland Park. But Nina carries on. She has no plans to bring another stallion back to Taunton Vale, and instead is concentrating on the broodmares. “I’m just breeding with the really top mares to selected stallions, and I’ll see what happens,” she says. Taunton Vale Stud will have eight yearlings in the upcoming 2020 Perth Yearling Sale, headed by three youngsters in Book 1 – two by Demerit and another by King’s Troop. The latter is a half-sister to both Special Reward and Gr3 WATC Sires’ Produce winner Showy Chloe. There’s also a full sister to Kiss Bang Love, and another to 2016 Karrakatta place-getter Spangled Impact. It’s a draft that Kent Johnston would be proud of, and his absence this February will be felt in the sale ring. He was both a breeder and horseman but, from so many recollections after his death, he was also a teacher, a mentor and a perfectionist. “Kent had a passion for raising good kids and great horses, and this consumed his life,” said son-in-law Dan Steers at Kent’s passing. “He taught me to walk fast, to announce myself on the phone, and he wasn’t afraid to tell you what he thought. Kent Johnston was a unique one-of-a-kind who will never be replaced, always be missed and never forgotten.”

MAGIC MILLIONS
Fashions Winner Scoops Prize Pool Horse racing, champagne, and high fashion. The innate ingredients of the “perfect day at the track”. In a bid to add further colour to the crowds, there has been increased sponsorship of Western Australia’s hugely popular Fashions on the Field competitions which has resulted in a surge of interest and new entries across the State. Bernadette May is one young lady who has certainly benefitted from her involvement with the Western Australia Fashions circuit. After winning the Magic Millions Ladies Raceday Fashions on the Field at Pinjarra in February last year, Bernadette represented the Peel region in the 2019 RWWA Country Racing Fashions on the Field for Western Australia held at the Winterbottom Race Day at Ascot Racecourse in November. Crowned the 2019 WA winner, Bernadette’s prizes included a trip to Royal Ascot, $10,000 in cash, and a $5,000 Linney’s jewellery voucher. “The prizes were incredible but I got so much more out of it than that,” she says. “It’s been such a trip. I have made so many new friends including two best friends. When I first travelled to do fashions I knew one person. So I just did my own thing. The more I did it the more people I got to know and we all started doing things together and before you knew it you’d be travelling with someone you knew and you would be friends with 5-10 people at the track you went to. That’s easily one of the best things.” When you consider the fashions circuit in Western Australia you need to put it into perspective. The State has the largest country racing precinct in the world (10 regions and 37 regional thoroughbred race clubs). That’s a lot of women and a lot of striking outfits competing for the subjective attention of the judges. In fact Bernadette says that when it came to the final in November last year the messages she received from the East Coast were telling as the girls on that side of Australia said they simply could not split the finalists; in other words the girls in the West were well and truly holding their own against the best in the country. Bernadette said that her interest in Fashions evolved not through the competitions per se (which weren’t in existence at that stage), but in the way some of the more elegantly dressed older ladies were dressed at the races.

“I noticed their lovely millinery. That caught my attention. I didn’t even know it was called millinery at the time. They were always dressed immaculately. And you could tell the quality pieces. And I thought “I would so like a hat like that”. But of course if you have a hat like that you need a dress equally as stunning. To love fashions on the field you have, of course, to love racing and Bernadette says her interest and attendance at the races started around eight years ago. “I used to go to the races in Geraldton with my girlfriends, probably five years before I started entering Fashions. We would always make a day of it. I knew how to put a bet on so I’d show everyone. I always loved the social side.” “The first competition that came up was the first Country Cups competition. They announced a heat in Geraldton. It actually happened to fall on my birthday. I started looking online to see what girls were wearing in other States as Fashions was bigger in the East at that stage. I thought I would put something together and enter and so on my birthday I won the mid-West round and it started from there. I didn’t win the final that year or the following year so it was third time lucky this year.” Bernadette says that when it comes to putting together an outfit you have multiple options. “You can get something off the rack and you can add accessories to it or work with a designer to custom produce a dress which I have done a few times. Or you can submit your own design and they can tweak it but I have very strong ideas so whoever I choose ends up having an argument with me over taste! Equally there are lots of milliners in Australia and you can pick something from their range or work with them to do a custom design or you can design and make something yourself. Some people will design an entire outfit around a hat.

race day and perhaps start to think about entering competitions in the future. “Jump online and see what girls are wearing at competitions. Look at what your tastes are. For your
“Fashion is actually all about design as you are putting together shoes to clutch, millinery, dress, stockings, jackets, gloves, makeup and jewellery all to be deemed seasonal. We spend hours doing it. We have groups on Messenger that spend hours going over things. Bernadette says she always sticks to bright colours unless it is Derby Day. She says she used to follow seasonal colours or the pantone colour of the year but now she just goes with what she loves. She states that ‘refinement’ is also overtaking the ‘more is better’ look. “Cast your eye over your outfit as a whole and If your eye doesn’t stop at something then it doesn’t have balance,” she comments. I ask her what sort of money we are talking about to put an outfit of this description together. There is a momentary pause then she asks if her husband is going to read the article?! I respond by saying that it depends if he is going to be buying a racehorse as a hat could then look very inexpensive!) I ask her how someone who is not yet competing in fashions on the field can stay on trend to ensure they dress appropriately on

first few competitions wear what you like. Just go along as Fashions has its own fashion genre so you just have to see it and get a feel for it and your taste will evolve with it. You won’t put your best outfit together from Day 1. But you need to get on the stage and give it a go.” I ask what her advice would be to someone who has the ‘look’ to go in a fashions competition but is petrified at the thought of being on stage. “Don’t take the competition side of things too seriously. Have a champagne (or two!), and give it a shot. You get a huge rush of adrenalin. Even now after however many times I’ve been on the stage I get a huge rush of adrenalin. It is so much fun. It takes you out of your comfort zone a bit but it is so good! “You’re not on a fashion catwalk so keep smiling. No deadpan looks. Your lip might quiver but happy faces at all times! Judges love happy faces! Have something on your outfit that makes you stand out whether it is pleats or a metallic splash or puffed sleeves. And just have fun! “ You have to be in it to win it.
