IN KENTUCKY HORSES ARE EVERYTHING… AND BOURBON IS EVERYTHING ELSE
Woodford Reserve, the “Official Bourbon of the Kentucky Derby” is created at the historic Woodford Reserve Distillery, tucked in the heart of thoroughbred country in Versailles, Kentucky. The Magic Millions partnership is the latest in a longstanding association with equine sports for Woodford Reserve. Internationally the brand is aligned with the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Park in New York, Travers Stakes at Saratoga, and Royal Ascot in the UK. There are more racehorses in Woodford County than residents, and more barrels of bourbon in the entire state of Kentucky than people. Deep below the soil, Kentucky’s water filters through limestone. The same water that makes the bourbon fills the troughs and buckets of some of the finest thoroughbred farms in the world. Call it serendipity if you want, but Kentucky owes its legacy to the bourbon in its barrels and the thoroughbreds in its stalls. As the proud maker of Kentucky’s finest straight bourbon whiskey, Woodford Reserve extend this unique heritage beyond its borders as the way they see it, all of horse racing needs an Official Bourbon. To learn more about Woodford Reserve, visit: woodfordreserve.com or www.facebook.com/woodfordreserve

MAGIC MILLIONS OVERVIEW
14
Magic Millions first captured the global racing industry’s imagination back in 1986 when it broke from tradition and conducted a world-first incentive sale on Queensland’s Gold Coast. From small beginnings with a sale of 200 yearlings, to now cataloguing over 5,700 horses annually for auction across Australia, Magic Millions has become a fundamental part of the breeding and racing economy. Innovation has, and will continue to be, the backbone of the company’s success. Magic Millions unique Race Series, with more than $11 Million on offer nationally, was a world-first concept that has developed to make the Gold Coast Raceday one of the top ten richest racemeetings in the world. With the start of the company occurring during the excesses of the 1980s, it’s at times been a colourful history, however the evolution of Magic Millions to become Australia’s number one thoroughbred auction house, by gross sales and stakes winners on the racetrack, is extraordinary. Australia’s Champion Horse of the Year, Magic Millions graduate Winx is also the current highest rated mare in the World and is one of Magic Millions’ 104 individual stakes winners of 154 stakes races in Australia for the 2015-16 racing season. Another statistic that cannot be matched is that of the Golden Slipper - 10 of the last 13 Golden Slipper winners (the World’s richest race for two-year-olds) to have been offered for sale as yearlings were sold by Magic Millions. In 2015/16 over $277 million was spent at Magic Millions Sales on thoroughbred horses throughout the course of the year, making Magic Millions Australia’s leading bloodstock company.
Magic Millions and Perth a winning combo History was made at the Belmont Park Racecourse on January 17, 1999 when Magic Millions conducted their first Perth Yearling Sale. The cream of the Western Australian crop went under the hammer
and the foundations were laid for the Gold Coast based company’s expansion into Western Australia. It was also announced a sales graduate race would be introduced, a Two-Year-Old Classic race worth $100,000. The race was run in December and won by exciting first starter Nervola Belle, owned and trained by Bill Godecke. A filly by Chanteclair, Nervola Belle showed blistering speed to lead throughout in the inaugural Magic Millions 2YO Classic in WA and cruised home under Peter Knuckey to win by almost four lengths at odds of 12/1. Since then the Classic has been the subject of a healthy prizemoney boost and it now carries a purse of $250,000 and will in 2017 be run for the second time at Pinjarra. Other previous winners of the Classic include The River, Lucky Street, Jestatune, Lock the Vault, Wyndam Glory and Gambei. Past placegetters have included future group winners Scenic Shot, Dino Mak, Petrol Power and Night War. To further boost the rewards for Perth buyers Magic Millions announced the introduction of the $150,000 3YO Trophy in 2009 – won by Flight Path. Other winners have included For Your Eyes Only, Playing God, Night War, Express Service, Testamezzo, Red Ora and Let it Slip. Multiple Group One winner Luckygray was second in 2011. The Western Australian industry has benefited in recent years by boosts to the Westspeed bonus scheme as well the boosted carnivals – particularly in summer with million dollar races including the Railway and Winterbottom Stakes. The Perth Yearling Sale is popular with buyers from around Western Australia and interstate as well as overseas – with healthy interest and support from clients from countries including Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and South Africa. Renowned for its sunny climate and incredible coastlines, Perth is a popular destination for thoroughbred investors and their impact on local business and tourism is significant.

THE SALE The Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale conducted annually in February has a proud history of producing world class gallopers. Not only is Magic Millions Perth the source of a huge number of winners within Western Australia, and the likes of current multiple Group One winner Black Heart Bart, it is the only Magic Millions Sale to have produced a Royal Ascot Group One winner in Scenic Blast – WA bred, owned and trained and now Hall of Famer. Other past graduates include Group One winners Luckygray, Moment of Change, Eagle Regiment, Playing God, Barely a Moment, Scenic Shot and Magnifisio. Crowd favourite Luckygray was purchased for just $46,000 and earned over $2.6m in prizemoney for his owners, while the popular Peter Moody trained Moment of Change was knocked down in the ring for $50,000 and collected $1.6m for connections. This year’s Sale, to be held at the Belmont Park Sales Complex on February 20 and 21, has brought together a quality catalogue of 368 lots. Among the pedigree highlights are half, three quarter or full relations to Group One or Group Two winners Elite Belle, Playing God, Catapulted, Celtic Dancer, Clueless Angel, Conservatorium, God Has Spoken, Gold Rocks, Lords Ransom, Motion Pictures and Salade. Yearlings from Group winners including Belle Bizarre, Paradise Park, Sister Patricia, Bantry Bay, Clearly Foxy, Hi On Love, La Sirenuse, Molta and Moodometer are also catalogued. As is the case every year, the catalogue comprises an exceptional line up of stallions – 72 individual sires are represented and plenty of interest will surround the first Australian crops of 14 freshman sires. In a great pointer for local buyers, over 78% of yearlings catalogued are eligible for the rich Westspeed Platinum bonuses and 96% are eligible for either Platinum or the standard Westspeed schemes. All lots offered are also eligible to be paid up for the $11 million plus Magic Millions Race Series.

OWNING A RACEHORSE Ever dreamed of owning a racehorse? One thing we know is that anyone that has ever owned a thoroughbred will tell you watching them race is one of the biggest thrills you will ever experience. Whilst there aren’t any guarantees in racing, being an active part of the thoroughbred racing scene is surprisingly easy and with different forms of ownership it caters to every budget. You can own a thoroughbred as an individual, in a partnership or with a group of people in a syndicate (friends/family/workmates/sporting team mates). Or you can lease a horse which has no initial outlay involved. Making an investment that suits your budget and meets your expectations is important, so here is some helpful advice to get you started on the right path.
Types of Ownerships and their descriptions: Sole Ownership: Being a sole owner means you reap all the rewards, but also carry all the costs. You have total control over the key decisions and will generally deal one on one with your trainer. Joint Ownership/Partnerships: Partnerships allow you to share in the excitement of horse ownership with work colleagues or friends and split the costs. Up to 20 people can jointly race a horse. Most trainers will have availability in horses, especially after a yearling sale, and they would welcome you to join in with many of their current or regular owners in ownership. Syndicates: If ownership sounds exciting but you’d rather reduce your cost outlay, then syndication may be the answer for you. Syndication will give you a lesser percentage share in a horse (or horses) and the selection of the horse, trainer, jockey, etc can be left up to the professionals (either the Syndicator or the Manager of the syndicate). They will supply a product disclosure statement (PDS) and the Syndicator will be licensed with ASIC (enabling them to sell shares and holding the relevant licenses and be registered in the State they operate in) – in a nutshell, not just anyone can syndicate shares in a horse. Leasing: Leasing is effectively ‘renting’ a horse from an owner/breeder for a specified period of time and obviously does not involve an upfront purchase fee. The term of the lease will see you pay all costs
associated with racing the horse along with an agreed “leasing” fee which may include a percentage of prizemoney earned. Breeders and trainers lease horses they wish to retain ownership of, often for breeding purposes while keeping a small interest in their racing careers. Being an owner in any form earns you the right to appear in the winner’s circle after your horse wins so you’re in winning photos with the Jockey, Trainer and Horse. The chance to meet up and celebrate after a win is a magical feeling, as anyone that has experienced will vouch for. The Western Australian Racehorse Owners Association (WAROA) is the official voice of racehorse owners in WA. WAROA membership provides you with many benefits and for more information visit their website www.waroa.com.au or contact waracehorseownersassoc@gmail.com.
Putting the odds in your favour Most buyers, agents, or trainers tend to buy from the annual yearling sales. A yearling, as the name suggests, is a one year old and is untried and unbroken (not yet educated to be ridden). The yearling sales is where you will most likely find your greatest chance to source that next racetrack star as all the good judges of horseflesh go about looking and comparing and sourcing the yearlings they want to invest in. This can be an exciting time for you to get involved with them and start the experience of owning a thoroughbred. Finding the trainer that is right for you will take a bit of working out. A trainer will give your horse the work that is required to get it into prime condition and spends their week giving the horse guidance and expert attention. Another alternative is to find a bloodstock agent to buy your horse for you. A bloodstock agent has the knowledge and experience to offer opinions regarding pedigree, conformation, and characteristics of a horse. You can find your local agents at www.bloodstockagents. com.au/our-members. It may be that a syndicate is your preference and then a syndicator will do all the work for you. So once you’ve made a few decisions about what type of ownership suits you, all you need to do is get involved, sit back and as the saying goes “enjoy the ride”.
WITH CURRENT 2YO WINNING PRIZEMONEY OF $36,000 PLUS UP TO $37,500 IN BONUSES PER WINNER (FIRST PRIZE $73,500!) WHICH WILL RISE AGAIN BY ANOTHER $5,000 THIS COMING SEASON, WA IS CERTAINLY A GREAT PLACE TO BE INVOLVED IN RACING

MAGIC MILLIONS INAUGURAL PINJARRA RACEDAY In beaming sunshine a bumper crowd flocked to the Pinjarra Park Racecourse for the first feature Magic Millions raceday held on February 7, 2016. Industry leaders were on hand to witness history as Pinjarra held their first standalone metropolitan class race meeting – with the $250,000 Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic (RL) and $150,000 Magic Millions WA 3YO Trophy (RL) the feature events. Perth jockey Shaun McGruddy was one of the stars of the day riding four winners including the first three, This is Huge, Echoes in Time, Frere de Felix, before partnering The River to a win in the $250,000 2YO Classic. All up on the day McGruddy was legged up in seven races – for four wins and two seconds – missing a place just once in a brilliant display of riding. His win on the Trevor Andrews’ trained galloper The River in the 2YO Classic was a popular result with punters who sent out the Western Breeders Alliance graduate as a $3 favourite. The pair held a one length margin on the line over runner-up Stored Energy.
38
Some 40 minutes later it was the turn of the Daniel Pearce trained Let it Slip to upset the favourite Lucky Street in the $150,000 3YO Trophy. Jarrad Noske was able to get the filly home by almost half a length from The Cobbla – who was gunning to be the third win on the card for trainer Stephen Miller. Noske has made winning Magic Millions feature races commonplace since he emerged on the scene as one of the state’s best riders – he famously rode Black Caviar to her first two wins. The likeable senior rider swept both MM features in 2013 aboard Camporella and Express Service – one of only two riders to complete the double in the same year. Following on from the success of the inaugural Pinjarra Park Magic Millions race meeting in 2016, all roads will lead there again in 2017. Magic Millions welcomes Woodford Reserve as sponsor for the 3YO Trophy this February. The second Magic Millions raceday at Pinjarra Park will be held on Saturday, February 11 with at least $750,000 in prizemoney on offer.
FIND OUT MORE ABOUT RAYNE EMBLEY,
OWNERS ONLY’S NEWEST AMBASSADOR! What sparked your interest in racing? Going to the races is one of my favourite things to do. I love the social aspect, the fashion and I love to have a little punt. I have dabbled with horse ownership over the years and there’s nothing like being out at the track with your friends on a gorgeous sunny day cheering on your horse. Horse ownership definitely takes the day to a new level.
Many people know you as a fashion icon and blogger – what are some fashion tips that you can give to ladies looking to attend the races? Less is more at the races. I love seeing ladies and gents going to a bit of effort. I know it’s been said before but comfy shoes people! And a headpiece at the races is always essential. Even if it’s simple it will take your race wear to another level.
What does racing mean to you? A fun day out with friends, being social and have a little punt.
How do you spend your time when you’re not at the races? What are some of your other passions?
What are some of your favourite memories from the races?
I love sharing my experiences through my blog, which focuses a lot on fashion, lifestyle and also motherhood. Obviously my children play a big part in my life and I am always trying to teach them to live life whole heartedly. I am also big on the outdoors, staying fit and healthy is something I am a big believer in.
I bought Andrew a share in a horse for his birthday about 10 years ago. We went to see it run in Bunbury. It came dead last and never raced again. It wasn’t the best start but we made the most of the day down south and had a really fun weekend.
You’ve recently entered into ownership of a new racehorse, what has the experience been like for you so far? Far better than the first time! I have been a part of the whole process. From seeing the yearlings at the Magic Million’s Sales, to being introduced to my horse at the trainers house at a casual BBQ, to learning about his parents and now we are about to name him. I get regular updates on his training and schedule and all I want to do now is see him race!
What advice would you give to those looking to get into horse ownership? Grab some friends and go into it together! It’s an experience you will want to share. Find a good trainer that is happy to work closely with the owners. Being part of choosing and meeting your horse and hearing about its training is half of the fun.
Another passion of mine is business. I love learning about all the different aspects of businesses and I’ve recently just started my own video production company. Basically, I am always trying to challenge myself and set new goals in order to take that next step.
What are you looking forward to most about being an ambassador for Owners Only? I’m looking forward to sharing my ownership experience with others and encouraging other owners to really make the most of all aspects of their racehorse ownership. Take the time to be involved in the selecting your horse at the sales, take the time to go and watch your horse out at track work and even drop past the stables to see how they’re going – it all adds to the experience.
What do you hope to achieve through your role as an Owners Only ambassador? To not only shine a light on racehorse ownership, but to also promote the industry as a whole both behind the scenes and on race day. I want to help showcase all that is great about racing.

THE OLD KENT RIVER WINES The Old Kent River story begins in 1985 with a Shearer (Mark Noack) and his very pregnant wife (Debbie Noack) planting a new vineyard on their 1270 acre sheep farming property. Mark’s parents had established the property in 1952 which is in Rocky Gully, located in the Frankland River wine region of Western Australia. Along with the establishment of the vineyard, the Noacks also conducted a major rehabilitation scheme across the whole property, including a tree-planting programme, whereby various species of Eucalypt and deep-rooted perennials that were well adapted to the area were planted. Their early grape harvests were sold to the likes of Domaine Chandon and Vasse Felix, for their ultra-premium sparkling wines, as well as to local producers Alkoomi and Wignalls. When these producers started winning gold medals for their wines, Mark and Debbie decided it was time to produce their own label. In 1991 they released their first wines under the Old Kent River label; a Sparkling and a Pinot Noir. These wines went on to achieve a raft of impressive awards and reviews, and remain the flagship wines within the Old Kent River range. A Chardonnay was released in 1992 and five years later they released a Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz, completing the current Old Kent River range. Mark and Debbie decided to involve their clients by planting a tree on the property for each bottle of their Sparkling wine [Diamondtina] they produced and this policy has continued since the production of the first vintage in 1991. It is now over 30 years since the Noacks initiated their rehabilitation scheme and evidence of its success can be seen throughout their property. Wildlife and numerous native plants and trees [such as Boronias, Orchids & Tee Trees] once again enrich the landscape. The Farm, as it’s now known, is still owned and managed by the hands-on and ‘down to earth’ personalities of the Noack family. It produces the award winning cool-climate wine grapes, farm reared lamb and elusive native marron that are

sold at the Cellar Door. Consultant Winemaker Marius Mencel, a Pinot Noir fiend, has always liked the wines and saw the incredible potential of the varieties planted in the vineyard. Marius has been involved with Old Kent River making wine trials, advising on different pinot noir clones as well as vineyard trellis decisions. As of the 2017 vintage, and the 2016 Pinot Noir, Marius is now responsible for Old Kent River winemaking. His winemaking philosophy is very simple: respect the fruit, respect the variety, respect the terroir. After a successful career in engineering, following his passion Marius graduated from his Bachelor of Science (Viticulture and Oenology) in 2004 with a High Distinction, the Dux of his course and the Leeuwin Scholarship award. Now, as a qualified and experienced winemaker he has ten vintages under his belt. Six of those in Western Australia, two in St Emilion, another in Hermitage along with the Napa Valley. He has made wine with the likes of: Picardy in Pemberton, Chateau Mangot in Bordeaux, M. Chapoutier in Rhone Valley, Millbrook Winery in Perth Hills, Clos Pegase Winery in Napa Valley, Hardy Wine Company [Houghton Winery] in Swan Valley and West Cape Howe Winery in Denmark, Western Australia. Old Kent River Wines are an official partner of the Magic Millions Pinjarra Raceday. oldkentriverwines.com.au
