Working with archaeologists from Scotland’s Urban Past, we introduced pupils from Newark Primary School, Port Glasgow High School and St Stephen’s High School to the history of Craigmarloch Hill Fort. The stories of Iron Age life and Roman occupation were the starting points for creative projects including music, photography comics and poetry. Pupils also looked at other archaeological and historic sites in the area for inspiration. Over 80 young people were involved in the project and all received Heritage Hero awards from Historic Environment Scotland. Almost of the comics in this publication were inspired by objects discovered during archaeological digs, though we did allow ourselves to journey back even further for a folktale inspired by a glacial erratic (the Bogle Stone) and a quick segue into paleontology to think about what dinosaurs may have passed through or nearby the area. Artwork by St Stephen’s S2 / Mhairi Robertson. Scripts by St Stephen’s S2 / Paul Bristow. Comics created by Ava Temporal, Mary Taylor, Erin Kelly, Zara Kelly, Erin McGregor, Anna McGowan, Anna Fraser, Kaitlyn Docherty, Robyn Docherty, Rachel Hurrell, Ellie Jamieson, Charleigh McIntyre, Sophie Heron, Megan Clenaghan, Holly Canning, Hayden Gillan, Tammin Sharpe. Magic Torch would like to thank Port Glasgow Community Campus Librarian Amanda Joykin for her support of the project, St Stephen’s High School English Department and Fiona Watson and Danny Dutton from Scotland’s Urban Past. The project has also produced a book of photos and poetry with Newark Primary School, and a piece of music with Port Glasgow High School music department, all the project materials are online.
