Old West Shooting Competition Draws from the Vintage ERIC QUITUGUA equitugua@magicvalley.com

JEROME • The smell of hot lead was thick in the air. Gun smoke rose from the desert floor. As bullets pinged and panged off their metallic targets, shell casings popped over the shoulders of eager cowboys and cowgirls. It was a classic Old West shootout. It was the Single Action Shooting Society’s Idaho State Championships. Organized by the Snake River Western Shooting Society, a SASS affiliate, the competition brought more than 50 shooters to the Jerome Rod and Gun Club on Saturday. They showed up in late-1800’s garb with period weapons to match. Twe lve - ga u ge d o u b l e pump shotguns, .32 caliber pistols, .22 lever action rifles and Winchester Model 1897 shotguns were in their hands. The participants came from all over the country. Men shot in the competition, and women did too (some faster than the men). Older folks participated, and even kids took part. Yonder stood Kayden Anselmo with his gun, his bullets crying like a fire in the sun. “It’s kind of easy knowing I have a little competition but not much,” he said. The 13-year-old from Emmett grew up around guns. His grandparents were involved in cowboy action shooting and Anselmo served as their brass picker, taking an interest in the sport. Ask Anselmo, alias “Elk Tracker,” who taught him to use a weapon and he’ll say he learned from his grandma but got his guns from his grandpa. Groups of shooters — posses — were assigned to different stage areas. There were 12, and each area had a design that resembled an Old Western facade: a jail, a general store, a train station and a saloon among others. Anselmo was at the general store stage.

He had handy a .32 pistol, his 12-gauge shotgun and his .22-lever action rifle. Like the rest of the posse, Anselmo had seven different targets and knock-down plates to hit. It’s only the kid’s second competition and, as such, he was nervous. But, Anselmo said, his nerves went away once he began firing. “ I t ’s p r e t t y f u n ,” A n s e l m o s a i d . “ I t ’s like shooting up in the mountains except you’re shooting at targets and not animals.” Sunday, the top twenty shooters will participate in the Top Gun ShootOff. In each bracket, two shooters will go head-tohead on opposite sides of a stage area. They’ll fire at each target, working their way to one last knockdown plate until there is one winner. “This is the best range in Idaho,” said SRWSS treasurer Kathy Cooper aka Celia Fate. “We’ve got all these little facades.”
