DIFFICULTY LEVEL BLUE MEDIUM Forget grand waterfalls and fjords - let yourself be amused by Trollpikken, a phallus-shaped rock formation that has become the most light-hearted symbol for the potency of Norwegian nature. In June 2017, somebody destroyed Trollpikken by cutting it off with heavy tools. The people of its home municipality Egersund worked hard to put it back in place with lifts, steel rods and epoxy. The landscape that surrounds Trollpikken resembles a scene from a Tolkien book with rolling hills, small mountains, rocks and shifting cloud cover. The Vikings also strode through the heather and granite of this area, where the last ice age carved out Trollpikken 10,000 years ago.

TROLLTUNGA  A TOUGH CHALLENGE 1012 HOURS RETURN 28 KILOMETERS 14 KM ONE WAY / 1,200 METER ASCENT DIFFICULTY LEVEL BLACK EXPERT Trolltunga is one of the most spectacular scenic cliffs in Norway. It is situated in the high mountains, hovering 700 metres above lake Ringedalsvatnet. The hike and the views are breathtaking. The hike is usually possible to do from mid-June until mid-September. It is a long and demanding hike. Consider carefully whether you are in good enough shape and have the right equipment before setting out. Prepare well and be a responsible and safe hiker. If you are inexperienced with challenging mountain hikes, you should consider to join a guided tour to Trolltunga. WARNING – do not try to hike to Trolltunga in wintertime by your own.

LANGFOSS  A THRILLING WATERFALL 3 HOURS RETURN

3,5 KILOMETERS / ALTITUDE 640 METERS DIFFICULTY LEVEL RED DEMANDING The sheer force of the 612-metre-high Langfossen waterfall in Åkrafjorden is spellbinding. No wonder that the CNN has listed this quintessential Norwegian waterfall as one of the ten most beautiful in the world. The best way to experience Langfossen is to follow the hiking trail on smooth granite, surrounded by thick pines and crooked birch trees. Calling the trail anything but steep would be pure fabrication, but the reward is an even more stunning view with every step. You will glance over the treetops at the fjord and the mountains while the waterfall roars in the distance. Sore and stiff calves will pass in a few days, but the memories of the magical views from Langfossen will last a lifetime.

2 HOURS RETURN 4 KILOMETERS RETURN / ALTITUDE 317 METERS DIFFICULTY LEVEL BLUE MEDIUM Situated a relatively modest 357 metres above sea level, the Himakånå rock formation has become known as “Little Trolltunga”. Whilst it is easier to get to than Trolltunga, the views are equally impressive. Compared to Trolltunga, the trek to Himakånå is faster, more accessible, and family friendly. The surrounding landscape flourishes with oak, beech and birch. The trail runs through mountain pastures, small forests and fields. From the top, Himakånå offers panoramic views of Lysevatnet lake, Nedstrandsfjord and farms surrounded by lush forests.

DIFFICULTY LEVEL RED DEMANDING It is not just higher than Preikestolen, it also has a grand finale in Kjeragbolten: the large, round boulder stuck high up in the air in between two mountain sides. Nature must have been feeling playful when it wedged the boulder into the crack. Kjerag attracts the daring. Even though you can’t see the edge when you first arrive, you sense the abyss that awaits you. On a trek like this, it is OK to have butterflies in your stomach. Perhaps it’s the way it towers over the fjord? 1,000 meters of vertical granite does something to us humans. Kjerag is a demanding trip, with an unbelievable view offering memories for a lifetime. Do a bit of preparation in advance and make sure you have a safe hike to Kjerag.

Trollpikken was first presented as a new tourist icon in 2017. Days later, the rock formation was cut off. Social media went crazy, and investigations began. Local enthusiasts contributed to restoring the 12 ton-stone block, only 13 days after it had been vandalised.

If Norway had been designed by landscape architects, Preikestolen would have been an award-winning work of genius. No other mountain better sum up the thrilling beauty that is the hallmark of Norwegian nature. Such a famous trek creates high expectations. Is Preikestolen really that good? It might be sunny or rainy, windy or foggy - but that is part of the charm. You know when you approach the end of the steep trail through the birch forest: The landscape opens up and you sense the depth around Preikestolen’s surprisingly small plateau.

such as Preikestolen, Kjerag and Flørli. Also, expect stunning vistas from the top of Lysevegen above

Lysebotn or from the Lysefjord bridge at the entry of the fjord.

Flørli 4444 Upon arrival to Flørli, you practically feel

surrounded by history. Climb one of the longest

and steepest wooden stairs in the world at 4444 steps from the fjord up the mountain. Exhibition

The Jæren beaches Norway’s longest beachline is spread over

70 km along the coast, with both sandy beaches and pebbled beaches. The coastal area is extraordinary in that it is a landscape of

important geological, botanical, zoological and cultural historical elements. The beaches are

in a p rotected landscape area as well as being in a plant and bird protection areas. The most famous beaches are Sola beach, Bore beach, Orre beach (Blue Flag), Refsnes beach and Brusand beach. VII/B5-6 Season: All year.

The Karmøy beaches Let the Mediterranean atmosphere prevail at Åkrasanden, the

elongated sandy beach with a Blue Flag (lobal environment certificate). The beach is well suited for sailboards. Sandvesand beach

is another of Karmøy’s beautiful beaches and is located just north of Skudeneshavn. The area in which it lies is very rich in terms

of species. The vegetation surrounding the beach is exciting for a plant lover. There are good opportunities for wave surfing for qualified surfers. VII/A4 Season: All year.

only national monument and you`ll meet wild sheep that helps

The moors of Sirdal offer short day trips but also longer hikes in the highlands. Some nice hikes include Degdammen, Hilleknuten, Kvinen og Gamlevegen in Finsnesbakkane.

What to wear and how to act in Norwegian nature? Equipment

Be prepared for all types of weather in the

mountains, even in summer. This is why you must bring clothing and equipment apt for

sunny and nice weather, but account also for snow, rain and heavy wind. The weather can change rapidly.

• Preferably wool clothing closest to body, then fleece and then windproof jacket. Bring rain-

proof clothing, hat, gloves and spare change. A reflective vest is a good idea as it makes you easy to find should you need help

• It is important to have sturdy footwear – use hiking/mountain boots

A fjord is a deep, narrow and long-stretched sea channel with steep land on three sides. The mouth of the fjord towards the sea, is often shallow. Fjords were created by gigantic tongues of glacier through several ice ages that have formed the landscape. A fjord is a u-shaped underwater valley, and in western Norway, this valley is often surrounded by dramatic mountain landscapes.

Frafjord

The fjords often have more calm waters than the open sea, and act as natural harbours. The Lysefjord is different from other fjords in Norway in all its wildness. The mountains are at their highest more than 1 000 m a.s.l., and some places it is as deep in the fjord as the mountains are high. Find out more about the Lysefjord on p. 12–13.

with local tourist offices for more information.

Bjerkreimselva river is a popular area for salmon and trout

Ørsdalsvatnet is the largest lake in Bjerkreim of 18 km. The

lake and the nature can best be explored on a boat trip with M/K Ørsdølen Sundays in summer. VII/C6

Figgjoelva river starts at Ålgård and passes

Suleskarvegen

Suleskarvegen is known to be the highest road connection in

the south west of Norway. The road stretches from Suleskar in

Sirdal to Brokke in Setesdal and takes you over the mountains to

Dalen and Høydalsmo in Telemark. Discover the fjords of western Norway, charming and vibrant towns, authentic rural culture and breathtaking mountain scenery. So, take your time, look around and enjoy your trip! It’s as if the Suleskar road was made for

motorbikes. The road has been awarded “one of Norway’s best

motorbike roads” by among others Bike magazine. Note: closed in winter (Nov.- mid May). VII/E4–5

Throughout the course of time, people have

used nature and put their cultural mark on it.

Since the first people arrived in Norway, 10,000

years have passed. Natural mountain formations such as sheltered caves have been the starting

points for homes, and landscapes with remains

from different eras bear witness of the different generations who lived here. Not only nature

offers top attractions in this part of the country.

In 2008, Stavanger and Sandnes were European capitals of culture, and the areas broad cultural life is a testament to this. The Norwegian Film

festival is held annually in Haugesund, starting with the award ceremony Amanda.

This is where it all began

After the last ice age, some 10,000 years ago,

this is where the ice first melted, and the country came back to life. Thus, the first settlements

were established here, in the country that many

thousand years later were to become the nation of Norway. A number of prehistoric signs tells

the story of a long settlement history putting its stamp on the landscape.

The Stone age 10,000–1700 BC The first “Norwegians” used natural cave shelters as homes, often near large moving boulders near water.

Vistehola is one of the Norway’s oldest Stone Age settle-

ment sites. The first people settled here around 6,000 BC. The

The Bronze age 1700–500 BC During the bronze age, the society became more organised. The

richest chiefs went on trading or war raids to Europe, where they exchanged bronze from southern Europe with leather, horns and fur from Norway. Settlements became increasingly more perma-

nent, and the rich acquired symbols of status, lived in longhouses, and were often buried in burial mounds. There are numerous

use. Iron was first imported, then later extracted in Norway. The

The fertility cult at Rossland in Sokndal consists of a god’s head, stone altar and blood tubs. The legend tells that the altar was used for the sacrifying of horses to the God Frey.

Street Art

The street art has put its stamp on Stavanger and the region for several years now. The annual Nuart festival has received attention from all over the world. As a visitor, you will experience a

visual statement hard to forget, with works from grand artists,

such as Fintan Magee, Snik, Milu Correch, AFK, Skurk and Martin Whatson. Mainly on murals in Stavanger and Sandnes

(nuartfestival.no). Several places at Jørpeland, you can observe street art of local motifs such as «Krokhølsmeden», and «Jenta

med Preikestolen» by Bart Bergen/Naeem Searle. Utsira is similarly known for street art; the island with no streets. Known inter-

national artists (Stik, JPS, 3F, Pichi&Avo, ATM and LaStaa) have

painted more than 70 stunning artworks along the roads at Utsira. Enjoy it on your own or with a guide.

Situated at the southernmost tip of the island Karmøy, facing the Skudefjord and the North Sea. With its narrow streets, picturesque small boat harbour, 130 white wooden houses and sea

houses it is easy to be charmed by the small city by the sea. The

museum at Mælandsgården (summer open) shows how it was like to live here in the 1800s. The “Time Travel” app takes you on a historic tour with a theatrical touch. VII/A4

Strandstedet Jelsa

Jelsa in Suldal is the best-preserved fjord side village in Ryfylke. There has been a church here since the 13th century and com-

mercial activity since the 17th century. The old settlement and the wharf constitute a unique environment in architectural terms. The present church at Jelsa (1647) is in the Renaissance style. Jelsa is

were subsequently painted in different hues according to a colour scheme offered by artist Craig Flannagan. The street is known for charming cafes and pubs as well as niche shops. II/B2

Cittaslow (from Italian città= town and English slow) is an international movement created in Italy in 1999. The idea is to slow down the pace and prioritise quality of life and living the good life. People have at all times searched answers to the central existential questions. The events we could not explain naturally, we attributed to the spirits and to the gods. When it stormed and thundered at its most, the Vikings were convinced it was the Norse god Thor wielding his hammer and made a noise. This attitude continued after Christianity arrived in Norway. Saint Olav (Olav Haraldsson) was then subject to cause for any special natural formations. There are many water sources in Norway named after him

(Olavskilder/Olav sources). Christianity came to Norway from England and Europe, and it was the elite who first became Christianised. In Norway, the introduction to Christianity was linked to the three C hristening kings; Håkon Adalsteinsfostre (around 935–960), Olav Tryggvason (around 995–1000) and Olav Haraldsson (1015–1028). The latter introduced Christianity as the country’s official r eligion around year 1020.

Årdal old church

In Årdal in Ryfylke is one of the most distinctive and beautiful

wooden renaissance churches from the 17th century. The church was built in three stages, the first stage in 1619. Inside, the

church has many beautiful painted decorations of prophets,

Utstein monastery

The only preserved medieval monastery in Norway (1260). Has

been the King Harald Fairhair’s garrison. In medieval times, it was a monastery for Augustine monks and later a bailiff farm in the 1700s. Today, the monastery is run as a museum, a conference centre, a concert venue as well as offering rooms for private

Stavanger cathedral

The cathedral is built in an Anglo-Norman style, supposedly

around 1125, when Sigurd Jorsalfarer made Stavanger a cathedral city. Bishop Reinald from Winchester was responsible for the building works. The church patron is Saint Swithun, and it is

presumed that his arm is one of the original relics of the church. After the cathedral was damaged by a fire in 1272, it had a

new Gothic chancel. It’s the only medieval cathedral in Norway that has kept its original appearance while being in continuous

Arne and Hulda Garborg Arne Garborg (1851 born Jæren – 1924), one of Norway’s most prominent writers who struck a blow for nynorsk (new Norwegian). The park was built in 2014 and is located at Lauvsneset in Førde/ Sveio. There are several beautiful wooden sculptures around the

From Haugesund in north to Sogndalstrand in south, you can explore great architecture! Our cities have northern Europe’s largest concentration of protected wooden houses, see p. 45. Haugesund city has a unique structure of which Art Nouveau holds a strong position, with grand Swiss villas and towers on corner houses. At Nesflaten in Suldal, you can witness functional design with

the power station, residential housing and Energihotellet. Places such as the neoclassical Haugesund city hall, unique buildings such as Norwegian Petroleum M useum, the Lantern and the Stavanger Concert Hall, are all striking architectural gems not to be missed.

Iconic buildings Haugesund Town Hall is a neoclassical building designed

by architects Gudolf Blakstad and Hermann Munthe-Kaas. With

its magnificent, outstandingly striking corner section embellished with double pillars, the town hall is the result of impressions the

two architects acquired during a study trip to Italy in 1921. III/E3

Staalehuset is one of the largest sea houses in northern

Europe, designed by E. Halleland. Built in 1916 as a herring

salting station in one of the most hectic times in Haugesund,

referred to as “jobbetiden” (working period). The building has a carefully planned Art Nouveau exterior. Today, Staalehuset

functions as party venue, amphitheatre and concert venue – from 50 – more than 400 guests. III/B4 58

Breidablikk was built in 1881 by the shipowner family

Berentsen. The exterior is built in Swiss style with neo-Roman and Gothic style features. The interior is one of the richest and best kept examples of the historicism style. Comedian and antique’s expert, Stig Roar Olsen, currently lives at Breidablikk with the

title “housewife”. He greats the visitors with stories of life from

Swimming spots With our long-stretched coastline, there is a large selection of beaches suited for bathing on hot

summer days. Some of our favourites are already mentioned on page 28. On colder days, the

swim might best take place in one of the many swimming halls; i.e. Suldal Bad (new 2019), the

new outdoors pool at Gamlingen in Stavanger or Lundbadet. In addition, there is a whole raft of

lakes used for sunbathing during summer. Here is a small selection from north to south:

Swimming in Ryfylke

There are several swimming areas in Ryfylke, both publicly

facilitated, but also small, unique places only known to the locals. Some suggestions: Dørvika in Forsand, Nordlys at Jørpeland,

Sande at Hjelmeland, Sand in Suldal and Rødstjørna in Sauda.

Godalen, Møllebukta and Vaulen

Stavanger’s most popular swimming areas with sandy beaches and summer open kiosks. Both Godalen and Vaulen have play

areas, diving towers and barbecues. At Møllebukta, you swim in historical surroundings next to Fritz Røed’s sculpture “Sword in rock”. (p. 42). Vaulen has a wheelchair ramp. VII/B5

vending machine or via App (Kolumbus/Skyss/NSB). When

purchasing tickets on the bus (Nord-Jæren), or on the train

(only if your station has a ticket vending machine) there is an

additional fee. It is not possible to pay with credit/debit card

on local buses (Kolumbus/Skyss). On buses in Haugesund city

centre (Kolumbus), the ticket fee is NOK 10,-. Reduces fares for children from 4–15 years and seniors over 67 years. Kids under the age of 4 travel for free. Your bus ticket is valid on the train and vice versa. The least expensive way of buying tickets for

speed boats in Ryfylke, N edstrand, the combination boat to the Lysefjord, the ferry to Utsirda and Røvær/Feøy, is on kolumbus. no. You can also purchase tickets onboard, or at the Kolumbus

Lysefjord’s stunning scenery includes majestic mountains and is simply unforgettable. Gazing up at Preikestolen towering over the fjord adds a new dimension to the concept ‘works of nature.’ See the enchanting hideout “Vagabond’s Cave,” be charmed by the goats at summer pasture and taste clear mountain water from the Hanging Falls. We offer three departures a day in June, July and August.

Preikestolen Cruise & Hike

8 hours

Enjoy lovely Lysefjord, see Preikestolen towering over you and hike to what some call “the world’s best view.” The cruise includes legendary hideout “Vagabond’s Cave,” tasting pure water from Hanging Falls and a view of Preikestolen from our boat. Then hike through glorious scenery to Preikestolen plateau itself. Do the summer hike by yourself on a clearly marked trail. The winter hike is guided.
