Viking to win – again MOVED: QUERARI VIKING NOW WITH AZZIE AND CAN SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT ʂʂ Myfunnyvalentine to have the last laugh in Graduation Plate.

EQUINE CHAMELEON. Querari Viking beats Nordic Storm at Turffontein on 3 September but controversially lost the race in the boardroom. In Race 5 tomorrow Querari Viking will now run in the same colours as Nordic Storm and is trained by Mike Azzie. from Sabre Dance who has run five times for three second places, a third and a fourth. He took a walk in the betting last time – drifting from 1-1 to 22-10 – when a 1.70-length fourth behind Midnight Racer over 1700m. He will enjoy the drop to 1450m. Myfunnyvalentine won the Grade 3 Spring Spree Stakes over 1200m at Turffontein on the Inside track and looks the runner
to beat in Race 2, a Graduation Plate over 1200m. Sean Tarry’s charge and Hollie Point, trained by Alec Laird, are the two best handicapped runners and at the weights there is not much to choose between the pair. Hollie Point ran fourth in the Spring Spree Stakes, beaten 2.50 lengths, and is now 2kg better off. That should still give the edge to Myfunnyvalentine who will now

be ridden by Piere Strydom. The daughter of Captain Al is sure to have benefitted from that run and should improve further. An interesting runner is South Atlantic. She ran fourth behind Modjadji on debut in December last year and then was a winner in January over 1400m at the Vaal. She has not run for 252 days and may well find 1200m too short, so keep an eye on the betting.

It was pleasing to see the Gavin van Zyl-trained Redcarpet Captain bounce back to winning form in July and he can follow up that win by taking out Race 6, a MR 99 Handicap over 1200m on the Greyville Polytrack today. That win was his first run after being gelded and his first taste of the Polytrack so there could well be more wins from him and this course and distance clearly suits. A problem for the Captain Al gelding is his awful draw. One runner who was caught too far out of his ground last time out was Kingston Boy. He had previously thrashed Duke Nukem over this course and distance when current rider Anthony Delpech was aboard. Captain Chaos is another track and trip winner but his last two runs were modest and he needs a form return. The Dennis Bosch-trained and Derryl Daniels-ridden Cutting Edge may have found the 1000m too sharp last time and was only 2.35 lengths adrift of Redcarpet Captain when they last met and is 1.50kg better off. Another runner who should have more wins in him is Executive Power. A wide draw is a problem for Alec Forbes but Executive Power has the early pace to overcome that disadvantage. Rikitikitana did pretty well in KwaZuluNatal last year and will likely show improvement after his short break.

Jack Milner t is always worth having a bet on a winner without a penalty and that is the case in Race 5 on the Vaal Classic track tomorrow when Querari Viking lines up in a Maiden Plate for three-year-olds over 1450m. In case people have forgotten Querari Viking won Race 1 at Turffontein on 3 September but an objection by second-placed Nordic Storm proved successful and that decision caused massive protests. At an inquiry held last week the decision was accepted as being incorrect by the Inquiry Board but they are in no position to reverse the result. So Querari Viking remains a maiden but looks set to shed that tag tomorrow. There is, however, one change. In an interesting move Adriaan and Rika van Vuuren, owners of Nordic Storm, have since bought Querari Viking and the gelding has moved from Ormond Ferraris to Mike Azzie. With Anthony Delpech aboard this time and No 2 draw, it could be a case of the Van Vuurens being on the winning end of both runs. Querari Viking has run against some top horses, including Unagi, who beat Samurai Blade last time. The main danger could come

Soma’s Miracle leads charge D-DAY: THE GRAND HERITAGE FIELD ANNOUNCED TODAY ʂʂ Trainer surprised Miracle Bureau tops the boards at such short odds. Nicci Garner
T
he Grand Heritage field will be announced today but race sponsor World Sports Betting has priced up and makes Joe Soma-trained Miracle Bureau the outright favourite. His 9-2 ante-post odds surprised his trainer, who said he knew his horse would be “up there because he ticks all the right boxes” but who did not expect the Trippi four-year-old to top the boards at such a short price. Soma, who had the fifth-best winner-to-runner percentage last season, says: “We earmarked The Grand Heritage from the beginning for Miracle Bureau because he fits the bill. He settles nicely, enjoys a decent pace, has a good turn of foot and the right merit rating - and everything’s going to plan. I hope he can do it for us. “We’re very happy with him. He’s improving with age and has a nice weight with 54.5kg. Obviously it’s going to be a hard race. Not only because there are 28 runners and you’ll need plenty of luck in running, but because it’ll be ultra-competitive (being a ‘long handicap’ where horses race off a weight exactly equivalent to their merit rating).” It was a condition of entry that every horse in the final field must have at least one run between first entry stage on 8 August and final acceptances today and Soma was
thrilled with Miracle Bureau’s preparatory run. The lightly raced gelding came back from a rest to score his third career win in a 1200m sprint on the Turffontein Inside surface last month, beating Le Clos by a neck. He was ridden by Chase Maujean that day and the jockey, who Soma says is “riding well and with a lot of confidence”, has been booked to partner him again. Miracle Bureau has only run once beyond 1200m - on the Vaal Classic track where he finished downfield, but little can be read into that run from a wide draw with a big weight, because it was too bad to be true. “In our opinion there is no doubt he will get the distance,” said Soma. The trainers believes The Grand Heritage, a new race by Phumelela to replace what used to be Africa’s richest race on sand, is an event that will live up to its name in coming years and develop a rich and thrilling history. The race will field a total of 28 runners with the rail separating the Inside and Outside tracks down the Vaal straight being removed for the occasion. It is anticipated the race will be a spectacle not seen before in South Africa with a cavalry charge of well-matched horses thundering down the straight. “This concept is fantastic for horseracing - it should be a wonderful day. I’m honoured to be part of it,” said Soma. “And most importantly, it’s grand that the racing operators are using money previously used for sand features to put on races like this, races that do not favour the uber-rich but everyone.” “It’s also terrific that World Sports Betting has become one of South African horseracing’s ma-
TOPPING THE BOARDS. Joe Soma-trained Miracle Bureau is the current 9-2 favourite for The Grand Heritage race at the Vaal on 1 October. The final field will be announced today. jor sponsors,” said Soma. “Horseracing is the game we live off - if there was no racing I certainly wouldn’t be sitting waiting for a game of soccer to bet on!” The R750,000 WSB The Grand Heritage over 1475m is one of four races at the meeting that will feature larger-than-normal fields. The others are the R250,000 WSB Heritage Consolation over 1475m, the R150,000 WSB Heritage 1200 Handicap and the R150,000 WSB Heritage 1200 Fillies & Mares Handicap. Phumelela has already removed the middle rail that separates the Outside and Inside courses and a couple of races at
the Vaal yesterday trialled the wider straight, which, Soma said, “allowed everyone to see where the best going is”. He added: “I don’t believe the draw is important down the straight, in spite of what the jockeys believe”. For the record, Miracle Bureau drew at No 54 and will probably start from a middle stall. Soma is expecting to have a couple more runners at the meeting and warned punters not to rule them out. “We’ll only know what’s running next week, but our horses are always trying to do their very best whenever we take them to a
racecourse. "Of course, we have setbacks, but 100 percent of our horses are there because they are fit enough to be competitive and give punters a fair chance. “Our percentages are good because of that mind-set and we’re very proud of it. So whatever we have running on Grand Heritage Day, we’re hoping they’ll do well.” World Sports Betting’s odds: 9-2 Miracle Bureau; Bulleting Home, Donny G; 8-1 Moofeed; 10-1 St Tropez, Chepardo; 12-1 Bold Rex, Arctica, Belenos; 14-1 Budapest, Celtic Captain, Awesome Adam; 16-1 Pivotal Pursuit, Alexa; 20-1 and upwards others.
The Conglomerate among Summer Cup entries Vodacom Durban July winner The Conglomerate is one of the 48 nominations for the R2-million SANSUI Summer Cup (Grade 1) over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday 26 November. He is one of four horses trained by Cape-based Joey Ramsden. He overcame the widest draw in the 18-horse field to beat Marinaresco in the country’s premier race in July and will only have to carry 2.5kg more, relatively speaking, if he lines up in the Summer Cup. Ramsden’s other horses are smart stayer minor feature-race winner Macduff, Coltrane and St Tropez. Triple Crown winner Abashiri was widely expected to win the Durban July but finished unplaced. He has had a good break and trainer Mike Azzie will be keen for the Go Deputy gelding to set the record straight if he lines up in the Summer Cup. First entries for the race were taken on Friday and Azzie entered
another three horses – Amsterdam, Arctica and Deputy Jud. Deputy Jud won the 2015 Supreme Cup and more recently finished second behind Dean Kannemeyer-trained entry Cape Speed in the Track and Ball Derby at Scottsville, while Amsterdam is lightly raced five-year-old who showed great promise in finishing second to French Navy in the SA Classic last year. Arctica has good form in much lesser company. Champion trainer Sean Tarry has five horses entered but ruling Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle and last year’s third-placed French Navy are not among them. At this stage his hopes of Summer Cup glory rest on Algoa Cup hero Stonehenge, Samurai Blade, who placed in both the SA Classic and SA Derby, Grade 3 Jubilee Handicap winner Liege, Cagiva and Fort Meyers. Trainer Johan Janse van Vuuren has entered New Predator and Negroamaro, one of the lead-
ing three-year-old fillies last season. New Predator won the Drill Hall Stakes and finish fourth in the 1600m Gold Challenge. Two other horses from the stable, Crowd Pleaser and Irish Pride, are also on the list of entries. Joe Soma said he was hoping to have a go at the Summer Cup with Mogok Master who made a winning comeback after more than a year off the course. This fouryear-old was not far behind Rabada and Abashiri as a two-year-old and Soma believes he is looking for this sort of distance. Geoff Woodruff has nominated last year’s winner and runner-up, Master Sabina and Deo Juvente respectively, while Tyrone Zackey-trained Judicial, who finished third in 2014 and fourth last year, is also among the entries. Another interesting nomination is Gold Cup winner Enaad. He is one of three runners from the Mike de Kock who have been entered. The others are Kinaan
and The Centenary, who loves this course and distance. Second entries close on 31 October when the weights will be announced, with final entries on 14 November. Final acceptances fall due on 15 November and the final field will be announced on 16 November. PREVIEW QUERARI VIKING was, controversially, denied victory in the boardroom last time. Ironically, the connections who benefitted from that objection have subsequently acquired QUERARI VIKING, who had previously finished behind SABRE DANCE. That pair should dominate the finish here. ARISTOCAT and REBEL BARON can improve. Both BAY STYLE and MAMBO'S IN TOWN could offer more this trip. First timer comments for Vaal tomorrow In an endeavour to keep punters informed we will try to give you comments from trainers, where they are available, about unraced horses at any local meeting. CRAIG MAYHEW:
Race 3: No 8 - BELLA TORERA: Is a nice filly but does need to trim down a bit more. She will need this run but will come on with racing. Race 3: No 11 - SISTINE CHAP-
EL: Is the more ready of the two fillies. In saying that she will also be in need of this run but with a bit of luck from a bad draw, she could run into the back end of the Quartet. - Gold Circle

Fairview to welcome international jockeys JOCKEYS CHALLENGE: FIRST LEG WILL BE RUN ON 18 NOVEMBER IN PORT ELIZABETH ʂʂ St Tropez impresses in Turffontein comeback run. Dave Mollett
E
astern Cape Racing - for so long the poor relation of all the racing provinces - has received another shot in the arm with news they will again host one of the two international jockey meetings in November. Fairview will be the venue for the first international on Friday 18 November with the teams moving to Turffontein on 20 November. Originally, Turffontein were due to race on the Saturday, but this has been put back 24 hours to allow for travel arrangements. There were raised eyebrows last year when both the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal got the cold shoulder in favour of the Eastern Cape, but the Fairview meeting proved a success with a large crowd making the journey to watch the overseas stars. The decision will be welcomed by all Eastern Cape trainers and particularly those of the top stables there which include Alan Greeff, Yvette Bremner, Dorrie Sham, Gavin Smith and a satellite yard of top trainer, Justin Snaith. Many racing fans may be unaware just how well Eastern Cape trainers fared in the 2015/16 campaign. All of Alan Greeff, Yvette Bremner and Dorrie Sham finished in the top 30 in the national trainers’ log. Greeff, son of legendary trainer Stanley Greeff, finished in 15th place with 118 winners. This was the third highest number of winners with Alan understandably finishing a good distance behind Sean Tarry (209) and Justin Snaith (192). Dorrie Sham finished in 22nd place with a total of 78 winners
from her 848 runners. She was just in front of another talented female trainer, Yvette Bremner, who sent out 75 winners from 901 runners. While these major Eastern Cape stables have the luxury of using top jockeys like Andrew Fortune and Muzi Yeni on a regular basis, they would clearly be delighted to have jockeys like Frankie Dettori or Jim Crowley riding one of their horses. While the Racing Association has confirmed the international venues, the names of the riders in the overseas side have yet to be announced. However, the racing grapevine is set for a return Dettori visit (the attraction of Mala Mala could be a clincher!) and that Hayley Turner might make the trip to do some interviewing. Hayley scored a dramatic win for Steve Moffatt’s stable at last year’s meeting at Turffontein. Meanwhile, the final field for the R750,000 The Grand Heritage - scheduled for the Vaal on 1 October - will be announced today and Gauteng trainer, Louis Goosen, has moved quickly to secure a top jockey. “I’ve booked Muzi Yeni for Move Like Jagger - we’re in the third tier but I’m hopeful we’ll get in,” said Louis. Vaal-based Louis does well with a relatively small string and two of his sprinters, Trip Tease and Doing It For Dan, have put punters in the money on a number of occasions. He says the Computaform Sprint will be the main target for Doing It For Dan this term. “It looks like being an exciting season as I’ve got some nice young three-year-olds as well as a fine crop of two year-olds”, added Louis. “Hopefully our new policy will pay off - when it comes to the sales we strive to buy the best or go home empty-handed.” Perhaps one of the most eyecatching trials for the Heritage
ON AIR. Former jockey Hayley Turner, now a commentator, is tipped to come to South Africa to conduct interviews at the Jockeys International. came from Joe Ramsden inmate, St Tropez, who finished fourth behind Bulleting Home in the final race at Turffontein last Saturday. Andrew Fortune will know this was a great effort and it indicated that the Heritage trip of 1475m might not be too sharp. Anton Marcus chose to ride St Tropez in preference to The Conglomerate in the Vodacom July so it will be interesting to see whether he’ll be in the saddle again when the field for the Vaal race is announced to-
day. Finally, a huge slap on the back for Jeff Lloyd on his recent feat of booting home five winners at a meeting in Australia. After suffering a stroke the career of “Guv Lloyd” appeared to be over so his comeback rates one of the huge achievements in our sport. Imagine if Jeff could return to ride that elusive Durban July winner. They’d hear the cheers as far away as Mauritius - another country which has witnessed his immense talent.
A Victory to Marvel at Clint Hutchison Hong Kong – Caspar Fownes and Zac Purton should continue their brilliant start to the season by landing the Lam Tin Handicap (Race 3) with progressive sprinter Victory Marvel. This talented son of I Am Invincible was a solid winner on his seasonal return over 1200m at Happy Valley two weeks ago. He was probably better value than the winning margin due to Purton having to make a move earlier than he would have liked. However, as a result of the winning margin, he remains well handicapped and appears to be quite leniently treated in the weights. He has struck a similar field and can win again. One of the main threats is Tony Millard’s Supreme Flight who always runs a consistent race down in this grade and from a low gate he might prove hard to run down. The return to the city course should be a bonus for Cour Valant who has dropped a long way in the handicap and although he will need a good ride and some luck from a wide draw, he is more than capable of figuring in this contest. Of the remainder, The Full Bloom ran with merit on the opening day of the season and that he might be fitter going in to this gives him a chance. David Ferraris has a top chance to win the fourth event, the Ngau Tau Kok Handicap with Super Sweet Orange. There is little doubt this son of Zabeel will relish the move up in trip, and may even prefer further. Hopefully, he will be able to utilise a low barrier and settle a little closer than that being the case, he has solid each way claims. And there is a good way to start the night with Glory Star who should take some beating in the opening event. Glory Star had to work overtime on his first-up run when the pace in the first half of the race was far too fast. The step up to 1800m is a major bonus and he shouldn’t get too much pressure up on the lead in this event. That performance showed he has come back this season a better, stronger individual.
Sky hunting for Goodwood return to form London – Sky Hunter can build on a pleasing return to action by lifting the Crimbourne Stud Foundation Stakes today at Goodwood. The six-year-old had been off the track since finishing second to last in the Melbourne Cup last November, when little went right, being outpaced at Flemington before failing to see out the trip. Having previously won a Group 2 heat in Dubai last March and finishing second in a Newbury Group 3, that was a disappointing effort for Saeed bin Suroor’s charge. However, the Godolphin team
gave him plenty of time to recover from that ordeal, eventually taking the wraps off Sky Hunter in the September Stakes at Kempton at the beginning of the month. Sky Hunter was the highestrated contender in the field but he perhaps just needed the run as he found little for pressure in the finish and eventually had to be happy with third behind Arab Spring, who is hardly a mug. Bin Suroor felt progress from that run was inevitable and given he is once again clear on the ratings here yet favoured by the
weights, it will be a surprise if Sky Hunter cannot score a first win in 18 months. Fadillah catches the eye as she returns from a lay off in the ``Network At Goodwood’’ Stakes. This daughter of Monsun is related to some fine types, not least Group 1 winner Seismos, and was entered for the Oaks earlier in the season. Trained by William Haggas, Fadillah is two from two so far, supplementing a Haydock maiden win in April with a victorious debut in handicap company at Not-
tingham in May. Connections were talking of Royal Ascot options following that latter success, but Fadillah has actually been off the track since that win so clearly things have not quite gone to plan. However, a 1.5kg rise for her win in May does not appear overly harsh at present and given the high hopes once harboured for her, Fadillah can prove more than capable of making her mark. Flymetothestars returns to the fray for the first time since February in the 32Red Handicap at
Kempton and is worth following. This son of Sea The Stars looked useful when overcoming his evident greenness to make a winning debut at Southwell, seeing off Hermitage Bay over 1600m. The front pair pulled 12 lengths clear and while the runner-up has not achieved too much, there were a couple of subsequent multiple winners further down the field. Flymetothestars is bred to excel over trips in excess of 1600m so a 600m jump in trip here appears well within his compass. Press Association

SELECTIONS 1 CELESTIAL SPHERES (IRE) 7 MONARCHS GLEN 3 DICK TRACY (IRE) PREVIEW Celestial Spheres has earned a rating of 83 with four solid performances (including three runner-up efforts) and he warrants plenty of respect in first-time cheekpieces, while Dick Tracy, See Of Rome, City Limits, Ettihadi and Sir Nigel Gresley also looks capable of winning races. It could, however, pay to take a chance on John Gosden's newcomer MONARCHS GLEN. The Frankel colt is certainly bred to smart, being a half-brother to three past winners, and is sure to know his job first time out.

The Medicean colt is fancied to go close but ADMIRALTY ARCH gets the nod. A York maiden winner before eighth in the Chesham at Royal Ascot, he has posted a couple of solid efforts in France since and will prove difficult to beat if running up to his official rating of 88. A number of the others have chances including Accidental Agent, who was only beaten a length over this C&D last time.

Recent Lingfield maiden winner Reconcilliation is respected now going handicapping, while Street Poet shapes as if he's well worth a try over this distance after finishing an outpaced second over 1m2f at Epsom.

The son of New Approach bounced back to almost his best at Doncaster and another bold bid is expected. The latter has strong form in the book and merits respect, while Tullius looks best of the remainder.

This looks set to be dominated by the three-year-old's but the selection remains well handicapped off a mark of 82 and should be able to use her weight allowance to best effect. Renfrew Street must be considered trying this trip for the first time, while similar comments apply to Engage.

END MEETING - HAPPY VALLEY - 8 RACES
PREVIEW A highly competitive sprint with several of these having strong claims but preference goes to UPAVON who is in good heart having won his last two outings at Yarmouth and Brighton and has risen 8lb in the weights for those performances. Pat Cosgrave gets on well with the son of Avonbridge and he can continue his winning spree. Others worthy of consideration include Symposium, Gorokai, Panther Patrol, and Pettochside.

Last time out the daughter of Arcano was beaten by less than two lengths over C&D and a reproduction of that effort today would give her a leading chance. Go Nani Go and Costa Filey both arrive her on the back of a second-place finish and they merit the utmost respect this afternoon as well. The unexposed Equijade is another to make the shortlist and any market support for her would have to be noted.

Sacred Act weighted to win COMEBACK: GOSDEN’S CHARGE WINS IMPRESSIVELY AFTER 16 MONTHS OFF THE TRACK ʂʂ Wuheida could upset Fair Eva in Group 2 Rockfel Stakes. Geoff Lester London
J
ohn Gosden is the first trainer we look to when trying to solve the puzzle of the Cambridgeshire, the 35-runner handicap run over the straight 1800m at Newmarket on Saturday. Gosden has three times captured this £160,000 cavalry charge, and I fancy he can pull off the first leg of the autumn double again with SACRED ACT, who came from last to first to win on his comeback after 16 months off the track at Sandown this month. Sacred Act, a half-brother to Gosden’s French Oaks winner Star Of Seville, was gelded last winter and given plenty of time, and with just a 2kg penalty for his victory on the Esher slopes he is off too tempting a weight to resist. QUEEN KINDLY, who upset Fair Eva in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York last month, might take an even bigger scalp in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes by gunning down American challenger Lady Aurelia, who broke the track record at Royal Ascot but was fast running out of petrol when stepped up to 1200m at Deauville in August. Lady Aurelia has electric early pace, but, though she managed to stretch out her stamina in France, she was not nearly as impressive, and Queen Kindly, a daughter of the mighty Frankel, can take her down. Godolphin’s Gimcrack winner Blue Point is a red-hot favourite for the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes, in which the speedy Mehmas will be running his last race before he somewhat prematurely goes to stud. However, I think both can be beaten by Coolmore’s INTELLIGENCE CROSS, who showed his Goodwood form to be all wrong when winning at The Curragh, albeit in Group 3 company. He is rated a potential Group 1 sprinter at Ballydoyle, and ignore him at
BEATABLE. Fair Eva will have a lot of supporters but could find Wuheida tough to beat in the Grade 2 Rockfel Stakes over 1400m at Newmarket on Friday. your peril. Fair Eva will be all the rage for the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes at HQ on Day Two, but she was disappointing at York and although she did look to be crying out for this step up in trip, I was so taken with Godolphin’s WUHEIDA’s winning debut in a maiden at Newmarket that I take her to topple the favourite. Wuheida was impressive in beating Spatial first time out, and the runner-up then went and hammered a filly of Godolphin’s called Sobetsu, who promptly bounced back to break her maiden by 10 lengths last week, so the form is looking rock-solid. The Listed Princess Royal Stakes could also go to Godol-
phin, courtesy of BEAUTIFUL ROMANCE. Like Journey, who looks like being one of her main rivals, Beautiful Romance is dropping in grade, and the pair have met before, in the Group 3 Middle Stakes at Haydock in May, when Beautiful Morning came out on top. Beautiful Romance subsequently flopped at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood, but Saeed bin Suroor’s team were among those hit badly by the virus during midsummer, so I would put a line through those runs. Going back up in trip should suit Beautiful Romance, who has thrived for a break and worked particularly well under William Buick at Newmarket earlier this
Shack to give shelter from the racing storm London – On a tricky day for punters SEA SHACK can provide shelter from the storm and gets the Nap vote in the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Small Breeders’ Conditions Stakes at Goodwood today. A victory for this son of Equiano would prove hugely popular as his trainer William Knight is based at Arundel, just a few kilometres from the West Sussex course. And in terms of form, Jim
MAKE MAGIC WITH MORRICE Crowley’s mount stands out, having run into the smart Graphite Storm at Windsor and gone down fighting at the hooves of that rival. The form was handed a mighty boost when Graphite Storm landed some good on course bets
in a nursery at Newbury on Saturday. It’s more than a year since ENGAGE delivered by the narrowest of margins on her debut for Sir Michael Stoute. Quite a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since, with the filly failing to add to her laurels. Stoute has experimented with a variety of trips and today takes Engage over 2800m in the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Fillies’ Handicap at Goodwood.
week. The other Group 2 race on Friday is the Joel Stakes, where I am in the camp of HATHAL, who made a winning comeback at Haydock recently, having been off the track for fully 12 months. If the ‘bounce’ factor does not take effect, he can beat Custom Cut and Hathra. The best bet on Day One at Newmarket could be ESCOBAR in the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes. Huge Palmer’s colt is 2-2 and was particularly impressive at Newbury last time, and though now going up in class he is fairly high up the pecking order in the trainer’s already eye-catching batch of two-year-olds. We can swell the betting kitty before Newmarket arrives by getting involved in what looks an interesting fixture at Goodwood today. MOUNT LOGAN was hugely impressive at Doncaster a fortnight ago and must not be missed in the Group 3 Foundation Stakes. Like so many of Roger Varian’s horses, he was wrong earlier in the season, but he looked right on his Agame on Town Moor and can take this step up in grade in his stride. And, while not having quite the same confidence, I like SIR NIGEL GRESLEY and SEA SHACK for the two juvenile maidens which kickstart the meeting. Their last runs have both received a form boost,
and they could pop up at rewarding odds. Remarkably, the Breeders Cup is now little more than six weeks away, and America’s Queen Anne Stakes heroine Tepin served notice that her trans-Atlantic trip left no lasting effect when she prepped for Santa Anita with a solid comeback victory in the $1m Woodbine Mile in Canada last weekend. Tepin, who put the Europeans to the sword in the $2m Turf Mile in California last year, was having her first race since Royal Ascot and looked as good as ever, winning somewhat cosily by 0.50 lengths. The defence of her crown on 5 November remains the main priority, but trainer Mark Casse might take in a dress-rehearsal at Keeneland next month, though British bookies offer only 6-4 about Tepin emulating Miesque, Lure, Wise Dan and Goldikova, who actually won three, by clocking up back-to-back Breeders Cup victories in the Mile. Another for your Breeders Cup notebook is Not This Time, who sizzled home by nine lengths from a fistful of previous winners in a Group 3 at Churchill Downs on Sunday and is a must for the short list for the Juvenile on the Dirt. A son of Breeders Cup Classic winner Giants Causeway, Not This Time looks the real deal.
