DANGER: TARRY-TRAINED FIELDMARSHAL FENIX STANDS OUT AS THE OBVIOUS THREAT ʂʂ Red Ridge appears to have ability and looks a banker in Race 9 Jack Milner
J
ust As I said and Fieldmarshal Fenix have had a couple of duels lately with the former getting the better of Sean Tarry’s charge in both starts. On the first occasion they raced over 1160m at Turffontein and Fieldmarshal Fenix finished fifth behind Lucky Houdalakis’ runner, beaten 3.65 lengths. He was giving 4.5kg to Just As I said but when they met over the same course and distance a fortnight later Fieldmarshal Fenix came in 2.5kg better off. This time he finished second, beaten just one length by the son of Just As Well. Tomorrow they meet for the third time, on this occasion in Race 6 over 1200m at the Vaal, and there is another 1.5kg swing in favour of Tarry’s charge. That should bring them very close together but somehow Just As I Said knows how to win while Fieldmarshal Fenix almost has a wish to be in the No 2 box. This could be a case of famous

Just As I Said will be looking to notch up his third successive victory when he lines up in Race 6 over 1200m at the Vaal tomorrow. last words but the Houdalakis runner can make it three wins in a row. Marco van Rensburg has built up a good rapport with this four-year-old gelding and takes the ride again. S’manga Khumalo takes the ride on Fieldmarshal Fenix. One runner who could beat them both is Rebuked. After winning on debut in November 2015, this son of Albert Hall was off for more than a year, a period during
which he was gelded, and racing again on 17 December last year. He looked well beaten at the 200m mark but then took off late and went down just 0.60 lengths to Kapitan. Many pundits fancied Stephen Moffatt’s charge to win next time out but he put up a typical second run after a layoff and ran flat, finishing 4.75 lengths behind Mombela. He will be having his third run back and should be fit and

at his best, Gunter Wrogemann takes the ride. This is a very difficult card but the best bet could come up in Race 9 where Geoff Woodruff saddles Red Ridge. This daughter of Silvano finished third on debut, beaten 1.40 lengths by Comtessa Antonia. Red Ridge started 9-20 in her next start and easily romped to a 3.75-length win over Rose Of Soweto.

Jack Milner Isingamoya loves running at Scottsville and is at her best over 1200m so when Mark Dixon’s filly lines up over that course and distance one needs to take note. That’s what is happening in Race 5 at Scottsville today when Isingamoya takes on nine other fillies and mares in an FM 92 Handicap. This daughter of Muhtafal has raced six times at Scottsville for three wins and two third and has a record of four wins, one second placing and two thirds in eight runs over 1200m. Over the course and distance she has run five times for three wins and two thirds. Brandon Lerena takes the ride and his record on this filly further improves the statistics as he has ridden her once for one win. Dixon brought her up to Turffontein for the Grade 3 Magnolia Handicap over 1160m in which she ran fourth behind Green Pepper and last time she took in the boys in a Pinnacle Stakes over 1200m at Greyville and that was her only unplaced run over 1200m. After leading through the 400m she faded late to run a 3.75-length fifth behind Amazon King. Two winners from three runners have come out of that formline. One has to go back to November 2015 for the last time Free State visited the No 1 box but she has not been unplaced in her five subsequent runs. She is another who loves the track and one has to give her a massive chance.

De Kock closes in 3,000th win Mike de Kock is just eight winners away from notching up his 3,000 career winner. With Belle Rose winning at Turffontein on Saturday, De Kock entered his Last 10 countdown to that milestone, and after Alareef’s win at Meydan later on Saturday afternoon, he is just eight winners short of the big figure, on 2992 winners. Owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum’s Al Adiyaat, Bella Rose is daughter of Golden Sword from Summerhill Stud who is getting better with maturity and can be followed. Alareef, who failed in stronger company over 1400m and 1600m recently, bounced back to best over 1200m with a narrow win under Sheikh Hamdan’s retained jockey Jim Crowley, the UK champion. SA-bred Alareef, a six-yearold by Stronghold, three races in Dubai and seven in total. – mikedekockracing.com
Miss Frankel will next race in KZN Miss Frankel, so disappointing when starting at 5-10 on debut at Kenilworth 10 days ago, will not race again before returning to Durban. Dennis Drier said: “Miss Frankel was 100% afterwards but she just didn’t bring her homework to the track. That has happened before (with other horses) and it will happen again.” The second foal of champion sprinter Val De Ra, Miss Frankel is the only offspring of the undefeated superstar to race in South Africa so far. Frankel commands a stud fee of £125 000 (R2.1 million). The reports of his daughter’s homework had been good but she was niggled at from the off and managed only seventh of 12 to fellow newcomer Magical Wonderland. – Gold Circle

Wiser Callan returns from the land of Oz TACTICS: WITHOUT A FALSE RAIL MURRAY LEARNS HOW TO ‘RIDE FOR LUCK’ ʂʂ Needs to establish himself in SA before considering any moves. Jack Milner
C
allan Murray admits to coming back from Australia much wiser. The 20-year-old spent around six weeks Down Under where he rode for David Hayes. Although he did not get as many rides as he may have hoped Murray still had four winners and a number of places. “I’m happy with the way the whole time went. Even the horses I didn’t win on ran well. I felt I couldn’t have done anything more than I did to improve their performances,” said Murray yesterday. Murray was “noticed” by Matt Pumpa, a former jockey who is the apprentice riding coach in Victoria. It was Pumpa who organised the trip to Australia and he put Murray up for the period. “They looked after me really well,” said Murray yesterday. “I knew two apprentices who I met when I went to Dubai. I also knew a few other people.” The first difference between South Africa and Australia hit Murray almost immediately. “I had to clean out some of the boxes and then we were given horses to work. In South Africa you just get on to the horse and ride him. In Australia we had to go to the stables and saddle them up and take them to the track.” Once track work was over Murray would prepare himself for racing but if he was not riding on the day he spent the time with friends or get to see some of the country. “I saw some of the country and it was really beautiful,” said Murray. One of the places that really
WINNING COMEBACK. Callan Murray is back in the winner’s box after returning from Australia, winning on Belle Rose for Mike de Kock at Turffontein on Saturday. impressed the South African was Lindsay Park, the racing establishment of David Hayes. “It’s in Euroa, about an hour outside Melbourne. It was similar to the Summerveld set up but it’s his own private establishment.” Murray’s first ride came aboard Wicked Sensation. “She finished fourth, beaten less than a length." “My second ride was at Flemington and I was beaten into second by a short head. Flemington, where they run the Melbourne Cup, along with tracks like Moonee Valley, the home of the Caulfield Cup, are city tracks. The stakes are bigger and if you are an apprentice with an allowance city winners count two as two winners on the total of 160 points an apprentice needs. You need to ride
60 city winners before you get out of your apprenticeship.” Murray’s first win came in his fourth ride aboard Strictly Legit in a Maiden Plate at Mornington. His second win came at Sandown Hillside, which is a city track, where he rode Barjeel. “That win was the highlight of my trip,” said Murray. “It was my only win on a city track and the horse is owned by Sheikh Hamdan who I have ridden for in South Africa.” His third win was on Will’s Bid at Geelong and his final win came aboard the horse he first rode when arriving in Australia, Wicked Sensation. Australian tracks have no false rail and that forced Murray to think a little differently during a race. “You tend to ride a lot
for luck and you need to be more patient. The tracks are relatively short and tight, not as wide as we have in South Africa and without a false rail you are encouraging the riders to fan out in the straight. “I prefer having a false rail in place.” Murray admitted he got “a bit homesick”. He was also disappointed not to get that many rides. “I only rode for David Hayes and he has a number of jockeys who he is obliged to look after.” When interviewed shortly after his arrival Murray said he would move to Australia if offered a job but had second thoughts about that as time went on. “When it dawned on me how big a move it would be I realised I would have to wait."
No underlying issue with Many Clouds London – British Horseracing Authority officials have revealed a post mortem to ascertain the sudden death of Many Clouds at Cheltenham on Saturday showed it was due to a “severe pulmonary haemorrhage”. The Hennessy Gold Cup and Grand National winner had just beaten Thistlecrack to claim a second victory in the Cotswold Chase when tragedy struck, as the Oliver Sherwood-trained 10-yearold collapsed after the line. Although the horse had suffered post-race ataxia in the past,
which had seen him over-heat and “wobble” on his feet, Tony Welsh, acting chief veterinary officer for the BHA, said those symptoms “were in no way present or associated with his sad death”. Pulmonary haemorrhage through exercise occurs due to a broken blood vessel. No significant underlying health issues were discovered in the autopsy, the BHA said, adding that Many Clouds had worn a heart-rate monitor in training on 17 November and the data collected on that occasion was within normal pa-
rameters in relation to both his heart rate during exercise and his recovery rate after exercise. Welsh said: “Episodes such as this are rare, and can occur in horses which have no underlying health issues, and amongst all disciplines of sport horses. “In spite of the rarity of these incidents, as a sport we are determined to do more to understand what causes these symptoms, and whether more can be done to prevent it. “Several studies have been commissioned, as part of the £32
million-plus invested in veterinary science and research by the sport though the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) since the year 2000. The overall fatality rate in British racing has fallen by a third in this period.” He added: “Post-race ataxia and similar symptoms are linked to an increase in body temperature after exercise and can be treated by providing the horse with water. It is not uncommon in racehorses or other sport horses. “Despite some reports following the incident, there is no ex-
isting veterinary evidence which links these symptoms with racehorse fatalities, and the postmortem results have categorically proved that the symptoms exhibited by Many Clouds in the past were in no way present or associated with his sad death at Cheltenham. “Our thoughts remain with everyone connected to the horse. Any loss of life is regrettable, and we continue to use research, safety measures, regulation and education to reduce fatality rates." – sportinglife.com

Bernard Kantor racks up another winner TARGET: BOTH WHISKY BARON AND EDICT OF NANTES WILL BE JULY-BOUND ʂʂ Brett Crawford joins the trainers’ big league. Dave Mollett
I
n order to maintain Investec’s position as a powerhouse in the financial world, their top man, Bernard Kantor, has had to pull a few rabbits out of the hat. One of his best moves was to step in when Vodafone dithered about extending their sponsorship of the Epsom Derby - Bernard didn’t hesitate and the publicity Investec has received far outweighs the cost. The next move by the 67-yearold co-founder of Investec was to lure the world’s most famous jockey, Frankie Dettori, to another Investec-sponsored event, the Grade 1 Cape Derby on Sun Met Day. Probably not a huge task as Frankie is their official “racing ambassador”. To say the whole exercise ended up a resounding success is an understatement. “It doesn’t get better than that,” enthused Bernard after the race. “We brought out the world’s bestknown jockey for an Investecsponsored race, he’s gone and won it on a son of Count Dubois (his stallion) and in the colours of a great friend of mine, Markus Jooste.” Winning trainer, Brett Crawford, who had the sort of meeting that he’ll remember forever, commented: “Having a rider like Frankie makes all the difference - I didn’t have to give him any instructions.” Frankie, for his part, enjoyed the occasion although this Derby on Edict Of Nantes would rate a long way behind his two big Epsom triumphs on Authorized (2007) and Golden Horn (2015). We chatted after his win and
COMMON GOAL. Edict Of Nantes, ridden by Frankie Dettori, wins the Grade 1 Investec Cape Derby over 2000m at Kenilworth on Saturday. It was a great moment for the Italian-born jockey who is sponsored by Investec. he said: “You know, Molly, I apparently agreed to come (to SA) during a party (in the UK), but by the morning I’d forgotten about it. Then the next day my agent reminded me and I said ‘Blimey, I’d better go then,’.” The stipes slapped Frankie with a R1500 fine for waving his whip on Edict Of Nantes before the winning post, but the 46-yearold is unlikely to call in racing’s number one legal man, Mannie Witz, to defend his case. However, he could argue he was simply waving congratulations to Bernard Kantor in the main stand! On the Sun Met front, the confidence expressed by Brett Crawford in last week’s column will hopefully have encouraged a number of punters to back his Aussie import, Whisky Baron.
Now firmly entrenched in the premier league of trainers dominated by Sean Tarry and Justin Snaith, Brett had always believed that his charge could get the better of Legal Eagle as he had progressed in an upward curve since being gelded. Both Whisky Baron and Edict Of Nantes will be entered for the Vodacom Durban July and the fact that the former’s time in the Met was five seconds faster than the Derby suggests a Met-July double is very much on the cards. No escaping the fact that all the Snaith runners - headed by BelaBela - along with the second favourite, Marinaresco, were disappointments in the race and some experts now believe that the latter is not as good as his connections believe. Brett’s other feature success on
Saturday came in the Kuda Sprint in which Bold Respect, a son of Bold Silvano, suggested he was a steal when purchased as a yearling for R200,000. Two horses who will never see my money again are “Looney Tunes” Cloth Of Cloud and Aussie import, Lineker. I told the assembled company at my Kenilworth table: “If the filly gets to the start in one piece, she’ll blitz them coming back.” She got to the start OK, but after 200m was trailing as if left at the start or had simply refused to gallop As she can’t go to the paddocks for a few months, my move would be to send her to Mike Stewart’s stable at picturesque Noordhoek he’s a master with difficult horses and Cloth Of Cloud certainly falls into that category.
Garter fits the bill at Kempton London – Consistent filly Garter can secure a third win since October today when she runs at Kempton. Charlie Hills’ four-year-old has been in fine fettle on the allweather, having stated her intentions with a cool course-and-distance success four months ago. Garter continued her rise with another gutsy success at Lingfield in November and then lost barely a smidgen in defeat when a narrow runner-up at Kempton in December. Next up for the daughter of Fastnet Storm was a return to Lingfield for a 1400m fillies’ handicap a week ago. Garter came fast and late in what was a fair race for the prizemoney, but she was compromised late on after having encountered traffic problems. Whether she would have improved on her third-placed finish behind Simply Me is debatable, but that good run at least served notice of her vitality. Garter faces seven rivals, most of whom are either out of form or exposed, in a 1400m fillies’ handicap in Sunbury. It would, then, be a bit of a surprise if she did not go very close in the hands of Callum Shepherd, who again claims a handy 1,5kg. Keep close tabs on Beauchamp Opal in the 1600m handicap. Trained in Newmarket by Charlie Fellowes, this three-yearold daughter of Pastoral Pursuits was a bit of an eyecatcher over course and distance on 6 January. Held up from well off the pace, Stevie Donohoe and his partner made up plenty of late ground at the death to finish third, beaten under three lengths by Dangerous Ends. The winner renews rivalry at Kempton, but she is now 2kg higher, whereas Fellowes’ filly competes on the same mark. Go George Go’s winning run at Newcastle is unlikely to end in the Betway Handicap. Alan Swinbank’s grey has claimed four consecutive victories over this 2400m trip and is clearly still improving.Another hike in the weights should not affect him. - Press Association
Pearl Warm Warm looks hot in Hong Kong Challenge Cup Clint Hutchison Hong Kong – Paul O’Sullivan and Sam Clipperton combine with Pearl Warm Warm who should prove hard to beat in The Hong Kong Challenge Cup (Race 7) at Happy Valley tomorrow. The son of Keeper is having his seventh start of the season and although is yet to win this term, he has managed to hit the frame in three of his previous six outings. He has predominantly been competing at Happy Valley this season and returns to the same course
and distance which has seen him finish second twice in his last four attempts. He will need Clipperton to find a good spot from a tricky draw, but there does seem ample pace in this event with the likes of Cheerful Boy and Bullish Smart likely to go forward, so that may make his task a little easier. Big Bang Bong won two of his last three starts, including one over this course and distance and given the rich vein of recent form he must be given due respect. In addition to the booking of Joao Moreira, he has drawn well and should get the run of the race
again. The form this season of David Ferraris’ Nitro Express is good enough to win this event, but the main concern is that he last competed in November and there was a minor setback since his last outing, so it is hard to be confident he will be spot on in terms of fitness. Of the remainder, Happy Rocky should appreciate a return to the city circuit and although he has been well held in his only two starts this season he is more than capable of figuring if he produces his best while Hard Ball Get must go into Quartet calculations based
on his latest run when he flashed home to finish second over this course and distance. Zac Purton and John Moore should continue their recent run of success in the eighth event on the card with progressive sprinter Issac. He enjoyed the run of the race when scoring over 1200m earlier this month at Happy Valley and following a nine-point penalty he goes up in grade but carries 5Kg less. He should land in the box seat and prove hard to beat again. Brilliant Dream could offer some value, rmaking plenty of appeal. He was set too big a task
when he last competed and still ran very well in defeat, without ever looking much of a chance of winning. Similarly, Harrier Jet has drawn awkwardly this time but has proven consistent of late and can hit the frame. And Purton has a solid chance with Cheer Win in the sixth event. The former Champion Jockey replaces apprentice Kei Chiong aboard this lightly-raced galloper who caught the eye with a sound run in defeat over the minimum trip at Happy Valley on his last outing. He should appreciate the move up to 1200m.

PREVIEW A wide-open contest as many arrive here following good efforts on their most recent starts. That said, the nod goes to ALCATRAZ following his second to a subsequent winner in a similar event here earlier in the month and he must have a big chance today from the same mark. SELECTIONS 1 CANADIAN DIAMOND (IRE) 3 YASIR (USA) 8 OYSTER CARD PREVIEW A tricky race to close the card but the marginal preference is for YASIR, who have gone close to winning with a better trip at Wolverhampton last time. That followed a win at the same venue and this veteran has a very good record over this 2m trip. Canadian Diamond has seemed to improve for the step up in trip and a 3lb rise for his latest win is more than fair. Talks underway to bring Arrogate to the World Cup IMPRESSIVE: AFTER SUPERB WIN IN PEGASUS INVITATIONAL $10M DUBAI WORLD CUP LOOKS THE NEXT MISSION ʂʂ De Kock concerned about quality of his Carnival runners. Geoff Lester London
T
alks have begun, and Bob Baffert, trainer of Arrogate, the best racehorse on the globe, has not ruled out flying in last week’s runaway winner of the Pegasus Invitational to the UAE next month for the $10m Dubai World Cup. That might not be good news for Mike de Kock, who is aiming his stable-star Mubtaahij at the race again but Baffert, who twice lifted the World Cup when it was run at Nad Al Sheba, is in discussions with the superstar’s Saudi Arabia owner-breeder, Khalid Abdullah. However, Baffert, whose previous wins in Dubai came with Kentucky Derby hero Silver Charm and Captain Steve, stressed Arrogate’s main priority remains retaining his Breeders Cup Classic crown at Del Mar in November. The inaugural running of the $12m Pegasus, for which each owner had to shell out a $1m entry fee, proved something of an anticlimax. We were told to expect a shootout to rival the Thrilla in Manila (Ali-Frazier) in 1975, but sadly the eagerly-awaited return clash between Arrogate and his arch-rival California Chrome in Florida on Saturday proved a damp squib. Arrogate, the young pretender, came out on top by a neck when they had that epic scrap up the straight in the Classic at Santa Anita last November, but California Chrome, twice America’s Horse of the Year “never turned up” at Gulfstream Park for what was his farewell appearance, leaving his rival to pick up the $7-million first prize, the richest in racing.
ON HIS OWN. Arrogate proves unstoppable in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational last Saturday and could now be heading for Dubai. The big two were upsides each other in the stalking position at the 600m pole when veteran jockey Mike Smith asked Arrogate to move through the gears. The response was both instant and stunning and Arrogate, beaten only once in seven races, made California Chrome look more like a claiming horse than one who had amassed a record $14.7m in prize money as he shot five lengths clear in the space of 100 metres, ultimately winning easing down without breaking sweat. Clearly this was not the “Chromie” we had come to know and love. It was painful to see him struggle home in ninth position, and it transpired that he had injured his right front knee during the race. “Chromie”, who was on his way
to Kentucky by Sunday morning to take up stallion duties at Taylor Made Farm, will be remembered as one of the best American horses since the turn of the century, with his victories in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Dubai World Cup earning him superstar status. However, the capacity crowd at Gulfstream, who wagered a record $40.2m on the 12-race card, were left in no doubt that, while Arrogate had clocked up a success that was “bloodless”, they had witnessed “the real deal”, a horse whom Baffert puts right up there with his 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, though the trainer was insistent “don’t ask me to rank them as it would be like choosing between your children.”
Go on Patrol for the Matchbook London – American Patrol looks to have the bases covered in the Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap at Kempton today, giving punters the opportunity for an early strike on an otherwise tricky card. A penalty for his recent Wolverhampton success means he is giving weight away all round, but importantly he’s about the only runner going to post ‘on song’. His trainer Neil Mulholland is adept at improving the handful of horses he campaigns on the
MAKE MAGIC WITH MORRICE UK all weather circuit and Adam Kirby’s mount is a case in point. After a tardy start he looked better the further he travelled at Wolverhampton to score going away. On that evidence and at the same level of the class band he
is going to relish going a further 200 metres from a good draw in stall 6. Although the Nap is likely to start favourite, the same cannot be said for LEXINGTON TIMES, who appeals as the value play in the Winner Welcome At Matchbook Exchange Handicap. Ruth Carr’s long distance traveller gave every indication when troubling the judge at Newcastle that he is on the cusp of a return to winning ways and should reward Eachway support.
This year’s Dubai Carnival is fast developing into a Godolphin benefit, and the boys in blue won five of the seven races at Meydan’s fourth meeting last week, highlighted by a 200th Carnival celebration for Saeed bin Suroor, courtesy of Very Special who repeated her 2016 success in the Grade 2 Cape Verdi. British champion jockey Jim Crowley settled Very Special just off the lead, with Christophe Soumillon adopting “catch me if you can” tactics on Mike de Kock’s Tahanee, who faded to finish fifth. Bin Suroor, who will now aim Very Special at the Grade 2 Balanchine en route to the Grade 1 Dubai Turf on World Cup Night (25 March), has sent out more than 2,000 winners worldwide, including 12 British Classics who have contributed to four UK trainers titles. He said: “Very Special gets her name because she is just that, but it is also very special to reach this landmark in Dubai which is my home town. “Sheikh Mohammed has been so supportive over two decades and we always bring a strong team for the Carnival with World Cup Night in mind, and to reach 2,000 in front of my own people is the icing on the cake.” Bin Suroor, who also has no fewer than seven Dubai World Cups on his mantelpiece, had earlier teamed up with Crowley to win the Grade 2 Al Rashidiya with Promising Run, who nailed Mike de Kock’s brave Light The Lights
close home, though the South African trainer was making no excuses. He said: “We had to do the donkeywork ourselves out in front which was not ideal, but Light The Lights was beaten fair and square and I doubt he’d be good enough either in the Dubai Turf. “We just don’t have the ammunition for the Carnival this year and it’s been tough going. Apart from Mubtaahij, Fawree and maybe Noah From Goa, we won’t be too involved on World Cup Night, and until the South African government sort out the export protocols that’s unlikely to change.” Charlie Appleby, Godolphin’s other trainer, celebrated three winners on the card, feature being the triumph of Fly At Dawn in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial. Jockey Mickael Barzalona was impressed and reckons the colt will be even better served by the 1600m in the Guineas back here next month. We should again be with Godolphin at Meydan on Thursday, when RED GALILEO can clinch his place in the field for the Grade 1 Dubai Gold Cup on World Cup Night by winning the 3200m handicap on turf and CYMRIC, twice successful for John Gosden in Europe last season and also runner-up in the Grade 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Chantilly on Arc Day, can win at the first time of asking in his new colours in the 1600m handicap on turf. Cymric was gelded through the winter and been given plenty of time.
