e are just four weeks away from Guineas Day which is the first leg of the SA Triple Crown and the SA Triple Tiara for fillies. The key warm-up events are the Grade 3 Tony Ruffel Stakes and the Grade 3 Three Troikas Stakes for fillies, both over 1450m on the Turffontein Inside track on Saturday 12 February. The nominations for the two races closed yesterday and Doosra heads up the weights for the Tony Ruffel Stakes. The Johan Janse van Vuuren-trained runner is set to carry 56kg and has drawn wide out at No 10. Chili Con Carne beat Doosra by five lengths in a Progress Plate for three-year-olds last Tuesday getting 3kg, and just 1kg will separate them in this event which should still give Lucky Houdalakis' runnerthe edge, especially as he has

drawn at No 3. However, Doosra apparently needed his last start and should improve markedly on that performance. Mike de Kock has entered two runners in Al Fahad and the filly Ektifaa. Al Fahad is lightly raced and is highly thought of by De Kock, but after two winning runs and a decent effort in the Grade 2 Selangor Cup in which he finished fifth behind Gold Standard, he disappointed in the Listed Sea Cottage Stakes when a well-beaten fourth behind stable companion Orchid Island. Ektifaa has decent form but has not raced since winning the Grade 2 Choice Carriers Championship over 1400m at Kenilworth in October. De Kock has also entered her in the Three Troikas but she has top weight of 58kg and is drawn No 15. In the Tony Ruffel she is drawn No 4 and has been allotted 54.5kg. Sean Tarry has a very decent gelding in Matador Man. He was very impressive last time out when winning the Listed Secretariat Stakes over 1400m on the Standside track but has drawn wide at No 12. GENERAl INFO: Races are run at either a trot or a pace. Trot is where the horse's legs move diagonally, i.e. the near (left) fore and off (right) hind leg move together and the off fore and the near hind leg move together. At a pace both legs on the same side move together. If a horse breaks these gaits and canters or gallops where the two front legs move together and the two hind legs move together it has to drop out of the back of the field and resume the required gait failing which it will be disqualified. There are two types of start employed. Mobile: where an adapted vehicle with two swing gates attached moves along ahead of the runners until the gates are opened at the start position and the vehicles leave the track. In these races horses start in rows according to number of runners. The first row will have between 6 and 9 runners. The balance of the runners will start in the second row. Standing (Handicap) start: depending on the conditions of the race there could be two rows of horse starting from the base position. Generally horses are handicapped according to number of races won and/or the value of races won. Handicapped runners will start in rows 5m, 10m, 20m, etc. (at intervals of 5m or 10m) further back.
