The Environmental Issue - The holistic, balanced and environmental pool

Welcome to the second edition of the MagnaPool lifestyle magazine. This is such a fantastic issue, with many interesting articles from the pool industry, MagnaPool owners that have wonderful stories to tell and people that have passionate stories about this healthy and holistic lifestyle that encompasses beautiful mineral water for your pool. This edition is our environmental issue, it contains useful information and case studies that MagnaPool has gathered over the past few years on just how eco-friendly this water filtration system is. From water and energy savings to the benefits of the overall low running costs of the system, we have a lot to share about how MagnaPool is helping save the environment. Most of us truly do not grasp that “we are one with the environment”. There is no us, and then a great big detached outside world. Every moment we are alive, our feet are grounded to the earth and soil, we breath the air, we share our environment with trees, animals and all living creatures, we share the same water. One of my favorite sayings is “the water we swim and bathe in is as important as the air we breathe”. In most western cultures we are beyond fortunate in that we have an abundance of water to drink, bathe and swim in everyday. Most of us go along our day without a second thought to how precious the gift of water is. Understanding that over 1 billion people in the world don’t have safe water everyday to drink should make the message of saving the water we have more of a priority in our lives. MagnaPool has now two charity causes that it embraces – ‘Life Straw’ and ‘Little Mineral Pools of Hope’ which you can read about in this issue. I feel very strongly that as MagnaPool grows we also help the less fortunate along the way. It’s a positive thread we are weaving into our company philosophy, the gift of helping. We raise money internally for Life Straw, through donations and auctions. Our CEO has 12 chickens on his property and every few weeks he brings in a dozen of the freshest most natural eggs you have ever tasted. There is always a bidding war and I think the last dozen sold to the highest bidder for $280. All that money went to Life Straw. So far we have raised thousands of dollars that will buy hundreds of children a filtration straw they can use to drink clean water from everyday in less fortunate areas of our world. There is so much being said out there about “Global Warming” and pollution in the air, rivers and oceans, but voices on the dangers of water quality in most public pools and even in our own homes are a little more hushed. At MagnaPool we feel a very important commitment to educate people about these very issues and how our technology can help pave a way for change in the industry. The launch of MagnaPool commercial is a very exciting milestone for the company. Swim schools, health and fitness centres, retirement villages and luxury destination resorts, are all just a start of the amazing growth that has happened with the company in the past year. All these types of businesses see the benefits of incorporating healthier mineral water for their business and guests and the environmental benefits our product has to offer - a MagnaPool can assist in any business becoming carbon neutral and eco-friendly.

I always sign off to people I know in letters, emails and my editor’s note with Namaste. I started using it to greet and say goodbye when I actively embraced yoga about 8 years ago. It’s a peaceful and gentle salutation and for those who don’t know the meaning, I have included it in a note below. * Namaste is a common spoken greeting or salutation. It has a spiritual or else common usage where it may simply mean, “I bow to you.” When spoken to another person, it is commonly accompanied by a slight bow made with hands pressed together, palms touching and fingers pointed upwards, in front of the chest. This gesture, called Añjali Mudrã, can also be performed wordlessly and carries the same meaning. 2

MagnaPool is a truly “holistic pool” and what I mean by that is that the MagnaPool product and company has all the attributes of a truly holistic brand. MagnaPool aims to offer its customers - healthier water, a quality product, good customer service and environmentally friendly benefits. "MagnaPool is much more than a pool- it is a lifestyle philosophy that encompasses, mineral water, health, wellness, beauty and the environment, allowing you to create your own true sanctuary in your home or business." I hope you enjoy all the passion that has been put into this issue by our wonderful and very passionate team at MagnaPool.

I hope those of you who own a MagnaPool are enjoying the many benefits of this amazing swimming pool. For those of you who are looking to purchase a pool and are currently researching and making a choice regarding the type of water you would like your family and friends to swim in, perhaps considering MagnaPool water that’s healthier and more environmentally friendly will be one of the best decisions you will make in regards to your lifestyle and home. The exciting launch of the MagnaPool commercial division is growing each week and we are having some outstanding results and feedback from the swim schools that have installed the MagnaPool system. These swim school pools have extremely high bather loads and the swim instructors spend anywhere from 4 to 10 hours per day in the water. Many of these instructors who have had skin conditions for years as a result of spending a large amount of time in these heavily chlorinated and chemical laden pools, no longer have these problems in a MagnaPool. It is fantastic to receive comments from these instructors that dry skin and the strong chlorine odours are now a thing of the past since working in a MagnaPool swim school. With this and so many other stories ahead, I am sure you will find the 2nd edition of the MagnaPool Magazine an interesting and informative read. Best Regards, Alan Miller General Manager MagnaPool

Convert your

current swimming pool into a Mineral Water MagnaPool The revolutionary innovation in water science, that is providing swimming pools with natural, therapeutic and environmentally friendly mineral water. Since the launch of MagnaPool a few years ago the only way you could get a MagnaPool was if a qualified and licensed builder was building a new pool. While the focus over these years has been on new pool builds, MagnaPool has just launched a whole new sector and is now offering MagnaPool systems to pools already in the ground. With a slightly less expensive price tag, the new retrofit MagnaPool system can now be installed on any existing regular domestic or commercial pool. With the demand for MagnaPool's mineral water science rapidly growing, the exciting new launch of the MagnaPool retrofits will be timed in conjunction with the opening of over 100 Poolrite Plus stores all around Australia and New Zealand. Most Poolrite Plus stores will be licensed MagnaPool retrofitters and will be highly trained to answer any questions you may have in wanting to convert your current salt water, chlorine, ozone or ionized pool to a mineral water MagnaPool. “The beauty of the new MagnaPool retrofit program is that everyone that owns a pool can have our healthy and more environmentally friendly mineral water in their home. By just converting some equipment and most times replacing some of your water, anyone can have the most crystal clear and therapeutic water on the market today says Vanessa Saleh, MagnaPool's Marketing and Spa-Wellness Director. So if you are looking to swim and bathe in mineral water that 6

is odourless, virtually free of synthetic chemicals, healthier and better for the environment, converting to a MagnaPool mineral water system is one of the best decisions you will make in terms of your home and lifestyle.

Why convert your current pool to a mineral water MagnaPool? MagnaPool water is mineral based and made up of a unique blend of natural ocean minerals of Magnesium and Potassium. Magnesium especially is known for its tremendous therapeutic properties that can relax, reduce muscle pain and detox the body. MagnaPool's mineral blend is odour free and when you step out of your pool after swimming there will be no chemical or salty residue on your skin; so there is no need to shower off. These minerals are more natural and gentle on your hair, skin, eyes and body. MagnaPool's mineral based water is soothing and therapeutic on even the most sensitive skin and will not irritate your eyes or turn blonde hair green. MagnaPool is virtually free of synthetic chlorine and chemicals, providing a more healthy water for you to swim and bathe in. MagnaPool mineral water is 100% environmentally friendly as it saves up to 65% of its water due to its superior filtration method. This water can then be saved into an Iquapod water tank and used to irrigate your grass, trees and garden around your pool. Magnesium and Potassium chloride minerals are extremely

MagnaPool

beneficial to the environment, as Magnesium is the central ion in chlorophyll and Potassium is used for plant growth and root structure.

to refill your pool is very important. Investing a little more in good water quality is going to give you more superior results once your MagnaPool is installed

How do I turn my current pool into a MagnaPool mineral water pool?

What equipment will need to be replaced on my current pool to get a MagnaPool mineral water system?

Poolrite Plus stores are the licensed MagnaPool retail stores. Contact MagnaPool and speak to a sales consultant about converting and they will direct you to a licenced Poolrite Plus store in you area to convert your pool.

The minimum requirement is the Hydroxinator and our custom grade MagnaPool glass filtration.

Your licensed retrofitter will look at your current equipment and analyse what needs to be replaced. All conversions will require you to have at least installed a MagnaPool Hydroxinator and Diamond Kleen glass filtration. Once your equipment is installed and a simple water analysis is done to see if your pool water needs to be diluted or replaced, then the MagnaPool minerals will be added into the water.

How long will it take to convert my pool to a MagnaPool? Installations generally are completed in one day.

Will I have to replace my water? A simple water analysis will be done and depending on the results will determine whether or not your pool water has to be diluted or in some cases replaced. Choosing a good quality water source

How can I set my pool up to be more environmentally friendly? MagnaPool is launching in Poolrite Plus stores in February 2010. The environmentally friendly Iquapod tanks will also be available where you can store your backwash water and then use the environmentally friendly mineral water to irrigate your grass and trees. This method can save up to 100% of your water, giving your pool the "green thumbs up" and reducing your carbon footprint.

Healthy Water for our kids The launch of MagnaPool mineral water in swim schools

by Chris Shapland

In my opinion the MagnaPool technology is by far the most significant breakthrough in swimming pool water treatment since my swimming pool journey began.

It was a cold pool. This pool and a MagnaPool are the two best pools I have swum in, in terms of water quality and taste in my life.

My swimming pool journey starts in 1947 at the Municipal Baths in Toowoomba Queensland. I learnt to swim in this pool. My grandfather tied a rope around my bathers and then tied the other end to a long bamboo pole and walked along beside me taking most of my weight at first and then gently lowering me in the water, until for the second time in my life I experienced the joy of being weightless. The first time of course was when I was in my mother’s womb.

MagnaPool supplies a standard of water I am very happy to swim in. In fact, I find it difficult to swim in any other pool because when I get out of traditionally chlorinated pools my skin smells of trihalomethanes/trichloramines. If I had to spend extended time in a traditionally chlorinated pool, say to teach for three hours, I would have to have a shower and use a moisturiser so my skin would not get dry.

It has been a long journey over six decades and during that time I have swum in all types of water. Lakes, rivers, oceans, rock pools, fresh water swimming pools and chlorinated swimming pools, both public and private. Of all the public swimming pools I had swum in, the Municipal Baths in Toowoomba was by far the best. It was a fill and drain pool. Because the Toowoomba Municipal Baths did not have a filtration plant, the pool was emptied every night and then refilled between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am the following morning. The water came from under the ground through two pumps and delivered clean, clear, sweet tasting water to the pool. Every Sunday after the pool closed, my father “Bernie” Shapland and four or five of his friends would mix up a large drum of powdered chlorine and then bucket the chlorine liquid all over the sides and bottom of the pool. I remember they had this funny way of running by taking tiny fast little strides so they would not slip over in the chlorinated areas. As soon as this process finished, the two main drains in the pool were closed, the pumps for the water supply were started and by 6:00 am Monday the pool was full of beautiful fresh water. The only problem was the water always came out of the ground under 20 degrees Celsius.

My partner Sally Dommett owns the Shapland Swim School at Everton Park. Shapland Swim School at Everton Park in Brisbane was the first swim school in the world to embrace the MagnaPool technology. Sally and I both could see that micro flocculation in relatively deep bed filters would take care of the water clarity by removing the organics from the water. The chlorine levels generated in a MagnaPool Hydroxinator ensure the water passing through them is super chlorinated by the time the water gets to the pool; this process ensures a perfectly acceptable level of chlorine in the water. I try to go for a swim in Sally’s pool at least three time a week, of a night after all the cleaning has been done. I love getting in that MagnaPool. The first thing you notice as you walk into the pool enclosure is there is no smell. “There is no smell” – this is very significant, especially in a swim school environment. If you have ever walked into an indoor swimming pool and have been knocked over by the fumes, you will know how significant this breakthrough is. The MagnaPool technology removes that offensive odour. That breakthrough alone would have revolutionised the learn to swim industry. However MagnaPool have delivered far more in terms of water quality. My father loved to taste the water of any pool we went to. He 9

claimed he could tell from the taste of the water what the pool chemistry was like. I owe my father a real debt of gratitude for having passed this practice on to me. If anyone who is reading this article swims laps in a public pool, you may have noticed on the odd occasion that there was a metallic taste in your mouth. The cause of this may have been the use of Alum Sulphate as a flocking agent on top of the pools filter beds. MagnaPools use naturally occurring minerals and from these micro flocking hydroxides are produced. The beauty of this system is that the by-product is a sanitiser recognised in every country in the world as the preferred sanitiser, of course I am referring to chlorine. The beauty of this process is the TDS content in your pool remains constant and the MagnaPool water has a very pleasant taste. It tastes fresh, not salty, and you need to keep in mind that I normally swim in the Everton Park pool after it has had a very heavy loading from conducting swimming lessons all day and the water still tastes great.

In terms of changing the swim school environment these effects have been numerous. Staff with skin conditions from traditional chlorinated pools no longer suffer from these conditions in the new MagnaPool environment. The water is certainly less harsh on children’s eyes and there may only be the occasional need for goggles. The whole working environment is free from offensive odours. The water tastes and looks great. The real test for a heated teaching, therapy or spa pool for me, is it has to be warm, the water tastes like fresh water, the enclosed area, the water and your skin do not smell of chlorine, the water does not hurt your eyes and when you get out of the pool you do not need to shower off. With a MagnaPool you will not experience any of these problems. I love this MagnaPool technology and it has been a real privilege to be part of history in the making.

A significant part of MagnaPools philosophy is educating people about the importance of pure, natural and healthy water. $4* will buy a child a LifeStraw速, through

which they can access clean water for almost 3 years.

We believe it is our responsibility to create awareness about the importance of water quality around the world. Currently MagnaPool assists in raising funds within their own organisation for LifeStraw速. Half of the world's poor suffer from water-borne disease, and nearly 6,000 people - mainly children - die each day by consuming unsafe drinking water and over 1 Billion people lack everyday access to a safe supply of water for drinking and bathing. LifeStraw速 water purifiers have been developed as a practical way of preventing disease and saving lives. LifeStraw速 is also committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goal of reducing one-half the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe water by the year 2015. *$4 US dollars

Phillip Cashion interviewed by Grant Brooks Ruby, our two year old daughter, has a skin condition called ichthyosis which means her skin struggles to create its own oil. To further complicate the situation Ruby also suffers from eczema which makes her skin very sensitive and prone to being itchy. Dust mites are the main culprit and although we oil her skin a number of times a day if she comes into contact with anything like carpet her skin becomes inflamed and she starts scratching it. When Ruby was one her skin became so inflamed we admitted her to Westmead Children’s Hospital where, over a number of days, she was given an intensive treatment of steroids and wet bandages. Since then we have done everything in our power to minimise the environmental effects (such as dust mites) to improve her condition. We set up our new house to help her condition, this includes:

No carpet in any room, leather and vinyl lounges

Plastic toys only

All her clothing is 100% cotton

All beds are wrapped in dust mite covers

A washing machine that boils the water in the washes

to kill mites

Ruby is unable to play on the grass, carpet or sand pits. We live near the beach which we also cannot take her to. We recently enrolled her in swimming lessons and although 12

we covered her in Vaseline prior to entering the water within minutes of going in she was taken out in tears and her sensitive skin was completely red raw. We have been in our new house for over a year and our in-ground pool has remained a cement shell as we didn’t see the point of having a pool knowing Ruby would be unable to go in. Then I heard about a new pool system using the mineral magnesium and after some research we decided to finish the pool. I am very happy to report, we’ve had our new MagnaPool for over two months and Ruby is in the water three times a day for up to two hours at a time and absolutely loves it. No creams and no rinsing of the minerals is needed, just a towel dry and off to play. Zero side effects or irritations, in fact it seems to be helping her condition and reducing the amount of oil we have to use. This would be impossible in a saltwater pool or a pool with excessive levels of chlorine disinfection by-products. This has brought an enormous amount of joy to the whole family. We rave about the pool to everyone, as it has actually changed our lives, not only making it possible for Ruby to play like a normal kid, but also a relief to know our little girl can now learn to swim. Thanks Grant and MagnaPool. You have a fantastic product! "Magnapool has not been examined by the therapeutic goods administration. UPDATE In September 2008 MagnaPool introduced its technology to the eco-sensitive commercial pool situated at Kuranda in North Queensland. Since the mineral water system’s inauguration into the eco-sensitive rainforest environment the results have been consistent. Kuranda is surrounded by World Heritage listed wet tropic rainforests. This includes an eclectic mix of twelve hundred species of plants from flowers to thick shrubbery. Throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s Kuranda was a popular destination hot spot amongst the alternative lifestylers and has since been a thriving tourist destination that people visit from far and wide. The pool caters to a bather load of 4,000 people per month. The water clarity remains clear, and has provided the community with a dramatic saving in backwashing, whilst keeping the environmental backdrop nourished and rejuvenated. The Kuranda MagnaPool water is tested on a regular basis, and the results have remained constant the entire year.

Visitors have been raving about the results and have noted these in the guest book. Here are a few extracts straight from Kuranda guests and staff.

Take exercise into your MagnaPool

BALANCE

RELAX

REJUVENATE

Rehabilitation of any kind is easily carried out in a water environment. Stretching and moving in water provides relief from compression forces in the joints. Water therapies such as Watsu are a passive form of aquatic bodywork or therapy that supports and gently moves a person through warmer water (around 34 degrees Celsius). Watsu can promote a deep state of relaxation with dramatic changes in the automatic nervous system. It also helps decrease muscle tension and increase range of motion.

Take exercise to the area around your pool. Meditating while being surrounded by water creates a natural and relaxing environment. Meditation is one of the most relaxing forms of exercise that helps prepare your mind and body for daily activity. Meditation is a self healing process; any form of stress is a sign of our negative thinking and ‘DIS EASE’ within our mind. If we don’t attend to ‘DIS EASE’ in the mind we may find that this chronic stress can lead to disease of the body. If you’re familiar with any basic yoga stretches, take them into the water in the shallow end to enhance your relaxation experience. The aim of meditation and yoga is to bring inner peace within our self and to perceive and experience the world in a positive way.

Swimming is probably one of the most perfect forms of exercise because it is non-weightbearing, and puts no stress on the bones and joints. Swimming can improve cardiovascular conditioning and is also an effective weight-control exercise. The number of calories you burn swimming will depend on what strokes you use, how fast you swim, your swimming skills and your body composition. Swimming uses most of the major muscle groups and strengthens both the upper and lower body. Swimming in MagnaPool water can provide your muscles with a transdermal dose of magnesium chloride, and in turn promote more energy!

Real Stories of MagnaPool Owners

Story told by Vaughn Livermore

Vaughn's Story On February 16, 1985 my father, uncle and myself drove to Rylstone in the central west to go for a joyride. Our flight plan was to leave Rylstone and then fly over Wolgan Valley, then over Lake Lyell... We didn’t make it........... the plane crashed just on takeoff. It was a really bad westerly wind blowing and as we tried to get altitude the plane went left and right in the tail. The comment was made that it was a "bit windy" up here when I looked forward out the window there was a rather large gum tree and the plane's wheels got caught on the top of the tree and we banked to the left and the plane hit the ground and exploded on impact. I suffered 75% 3rd degree full thickness burns to my body and was the sole survivor of that day. My father, my uncle, and the pilot, all well known business men, were killed. I was 20 at the time and I spent 7 months in Concord Hospital and 10 months at Mount Wilga Rehabilitation Centre, where for 8 hours a day 5 days a week all I did was physiotherapy and occupational therapy. I would come home for the weekend and then go back for the week. After 10 months I signed myself out and came home for good. I could not go back to my trade as a plumber because infections and cuts take too long to heal on me, so a friend of the family introduced me to the earthmoving business and I have been in full time employment ever since, I really enjoy playing in the dirt, it’s just the toys get more expensive. I moved from Lithgow to Orange for the gold mine and met and married the love of my life, Anne who is the most important person in my life as well as Ajana and Luke, Anne’s two wonderful children. If it wasn’t for Dr Peter Haertsch, Anne, Ajana, Luke, 18

my mother Patricia Livermore, Jayne, Paul, Bronwyn and Tony, Michael, Kym, other families and some close mates, well I wouldn’t be the person that I am today at age 45. I thank them for their love and friendship.

What was it like after your accident to stop doing simple things like; swimming in most pools, because of large amounts of chemicals and salinity being too harsh on your skin? It’s not that I couldn’t swim in any pool or the surf or river or whatever, it’s that I could not swim because of breakdown of my skin after so many skin grafts. I was in hospital for 7 months and in rehab for 10 months and I really did not have the strength to do it - I also didn’t want to risk getting an infection. If I was to go swimming, I would go up the coast or down the coast, but I would never go in the surf say in Sydney because of the pollution in the water. I had to be careful of large amounts of chlorine and chemicals in pools, as my skin was ultra sensitive. Can a burn victim easily exercise after skin grafts? Yes and no, but depending on the person and how well their skin graft’s went. Exercise in a pool for a burn victim is a much more soothing and cool environment, but you can’t stay in the water too long and you have to be careful.

How has your MagnaPool changed your everyday lifestyle? Since we got our MagnaPool it has been fantastic. You seem to notice that once you get in the MagnaPool that all your problems seem to go away. It really relaxes you, and the benefit once you get out of the pool includes there being no residue on your body – you don’t have to shower off. Your eyes don’t sting and there is no smell of chlorine like I have experienced at other swimming pools. Over all it just feels better for my well-being. What would you say to other burn victims about the path ahead for them after an accident? As my burns were 24 years ago, I still go through good days and bad days but more of the better days. It is a difficult time and a long haul, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Family and friends around you is important as well. “My MagnaPool is like my own Health Spa”

Story told by Veronica Zammit

Veronica's Story My story started about 5 years ago, when my overall health started to go down over a gradual amount of time. My symptoms of severe cramping, muscles spasms and muscle stiffness all pointed into the direction of having Muscular Dystrophy. I was put into a research program to test for the disease, but all the tests were negative. My doctors do not know what condition I have, but all the symptoms are similar to Muscular Dystrophy. I had chemical poisoning in my early 20’s, which may have something to do with my disorder. I definitely cannot be around chemicals now, or in a pool loaded with synthetic chlorine and chemicals as my body and muscles immediately cramp up. My doctors have prescribed me so many drugs and therapies over the years there is too much to list. What I did stumble across several years ago, were natural mineral supplements for my condition, these helped me a lot. It is only natural when I heard about this "mineral water" pool by MagnaPool I immediately started to research the product. Because MagnaPool is mineral based and has low to no chemical maintenance, it was a no brainer that this was a far superior option for my health condition and for me to swim and bathe in every day. I am always on the move, even if I am tired or have muscle pain, because if I stop sometimes my body will lock up and then I cannot move at all. This is why I love my MagnaPool. I can spend hours in there either sitting in the spa, while having the jets massage my fatigued muscles and that in combination with 20

the magnesium soaking into my skin, completely relaxes me. I can swim in my pool easily as the water environment is perfect for me to swim and do exercise. When I get out of my pool I have this indescribable amount of energy again and if you understand how magnesium works it makes sense. When you’re tired and stressed it relaxes you, but it also promotes muscle energy. I get out of my pool now and have this invigorating energy to do the gardening or maintain the pool, which I love doing – I love being around my MagnaPool, it soothes me and calms me, it’s like my own health spa.

Health

What kind of therapy did you do before you got your MagnaPool? I used to get massages on a weekly basis, I had to so my muscles would keep relaxed and stimulated and this would also help me from getting into a state where I could not move my body. Sometimes I would lie down and not be able to move and get up, my body would just shut down. Ever since I got my MagnaPool, I don’t need to go get massages anymore; my pool is helping my condition. A combination of the massage jets, the mineral water and the ability to do exercise easily I believe is what is helping me. Do your family and friends enjoy the MagnaPool? My friends are over at our house now on a regular basis, they cook dinner for us just so they can get to use the pool. My friends and husband all say they are so relaxed when they get out of the MagnaPool water; they love to go take a nap. My 8 year old daughter Alessia now refuses to swim in any other pool, she wont go to the local swim school to get lessons anymore as she gets severe red eyes and is also sensitive to the large amounts of chemicals in that pool. Our MagnaPool gives her a safe environment for her to swim in everyday where she experiences no red eyes or skin irritations at all, she loves it. Are you happy about making the decision to invest in a MagnaPool? Absolutely! This is a superior product and after we got all our quotes in, we knew it was going to cost us a bit more to upgrade to a MagnaPool. When you evaluate how much you are spending on a pool, the fact that this is a lifestyle investment for our home and how much time you are going to spend in the water, it was a very easy decision for us to go with a MagnaPool. I cannot put a price on the health of my family.

Spiritual Intuition Most people are unaware that we have a sixth sense; this sense is best described as that "gut feeling" or intuition you have about something. We can become more attuned to this sense when we relax and meditate to be able to hear that inner voice inside all of us. Take at least 10 minutes everyday to relax by your pool or float in the water to connect with your inner being.

Spa or

Via? The great Chlorine debate

by Ross Palmer The Latin derivative for “Sallus Per Aquam” is SPA and translated into english it becomes “Health Through Water". “The latin derivative for “Venenum In Aquam” is VIA, also translated into english it would mean “Poison In Water”. Unfortunately many hospitality, recreational and hydrotherapy pools are today no more than VIA's through no fault of their own but a series of misunderstandings that have accumulated over the last hundred years. There can be no doubt that the use of chlorine has played a major role in the eradication of diseases such as cholera and typhoid in drinking water and the same biocidal effect is commonly recognised in pools and spas. Most health authorities around the world insist on chlorine residuals for patron safety and rightfully so 99% of alternatives do not maintain an adequate residual of sanitiser that can destroy introduced bacteria in under one minute. Chloride and chlorine play an active role in the physiology of your body. By the ingestion of chloride salts your body, electrolyses them into hydrochloric acid for food digestion and chlorine in a cocktail to maintain your digestive and microbiocidal functions of your stomach and your circulatory system. Yet that is what we are doing with living water pools. Bucket loads of chlorine and other chemicals are consumed in what I term the “yo yo” stabilisation effect with disastrous consequences. Our pools and spas are on a continual “binge drinking” regime, drunk one minute and sober the next, and who wants to associate with a habitual drunk if they can avoid it. Now let’s get back to the “chlorine smell”. If you take a bucket and put one teaspoon of liquid sodium hypochlorite or bleach in 200 teaspoons of distilled water you can’t smell any chlorine (similar concentrations to a pool or spa).

26

So what am I smelling in my water pool at my establishment? Here comes the double edged sword. There can be no doubt that chlorine is the only effective sanitiser that maintains an effective residual against bacteria, nature tells us so in animals and plants. However, in combating bacteria some other nasty reactions are happening, where in the chlorine is combining with sweat and urine to form chloramines and organic matter such as; dead skin cells, vegetative matter, dirt, sunscreens and body lotions combine with chlorine to form trihalomethanes (chloroform). Both disinfection by products show up in combined chlorine readings and unfortunately outside of Germany no attention is given to trihalomethanes in swimming pool and spa water. Trihalomethanes are watched like a hawk by our Australasian water supply authorities and are not tolerated in other than trace amounts because of their poisonous nature but the same diligence is not afforded to public swimming pools A study of 27 London indoor pools determined that they all fell outside the World Health Organisation guidelines of .08 parts per million (ppm) and German regulations limit the concentration to .02 ppm in public swimming pools. I don’t intend to be an alarmist, but ask that you do two simple Google searches on “chloramines health risks” and “trihalomethanes health risks". You will be blown away by what you find. One particular study in Belgium likened 2 hours in an indoor pool breathing fumes from disinfection by products equivalent to smoking a packet of cigarettes. The chemical formula for a trihalomethane (THM) puts it in the hydrocarbon category which is a primary constituent of cigarette smoke. So then, how long before you are forced to put a sign next to your "No Smoking" warnings displaying "No Swimming".

Health James Hardie covered up the dangers of asbestos dust for over 30 years; will you be able to cover up the dangers of disinfectant by products of chlorine beyond 2010 knowing that there are solutions available to your problem? Fortunately these solutions are relatively inexpensive, do not necessarily require massive capital outlays and in most cases require no disturbance of your shell or filtration equipment. The universal world’s best practice approach is achieved by flocculation and coagulation, mainly with aluminium sulphate to remove the THM precursors from the water and safely deposit them in a filter by dosing a flocculent/coagulant before the filter or in the case of our own MagnaPool system, generating magnesium hydroxide floc and using the magnesium ions as a coagulant. The Germans destroy the chloramines and trihalomethanes by running an active carbon bed on top of the sand media in the filter. The active carbon bed destroys chloramines and trihalomethanes but unfortunately strips all the chlorine which is expensive and drives up the total dissolved solids. The German systems also require diligence in controlling legionella which love to breed on the carbon granules. Having said that, it works well for them but it requires a weekly test in an automated laboratory like the one at the Hygiene Institute of the Ruhr (HY Institute), who weekly test 2000 public swimming pool samples for the presence of Legionella, THM's and Chloramines.

Our own company Poolrite Equipment has been in business for over 30 years and has over 150,000 filtration and sanitisation systems in mainly Australian domestic pools but also some commercial pools, and was the first company to introduce salt chlorinators into Europe almost 25 years ago. Poolrite therefore has a lot of experience in the area of filtration and sanitisation, which it was able to build upon when I first conceived the idea of the MagnaPool System and MagnaPool Company. Our team of chemists and engineers have been able to convert my dream into a reality that achieves the desired outcomes of naturally generated chlorine by the predominate use of magnesium and potassium electrolytes. These are extremely beneficial to plants when backwash water is diluted and applied to gardens. The generation of Trihalomethanes and Chloramines are suppressed to acceptable levels. The most heavily laden swim schools using our system now have no issues with staff and the "chlorine itch". In fact there is a lot of evidence that shows potassium is beneficial dermalogically for the skin and that the transdermal absorption of magnesium is also accretive to the bodies physiology. No longer do you have to put up with a VIA, you can convert you water body into a true SPA and deliver the benefits you promise.

m by Lucia Bacci MagnaPool, the company behind the innovation in water science, mineral water for swimming pools, has launched a new natural mineral based body care range that is mineral based just like their luxurious pool water. The new bath and body care collection “Magnesium Mineral Science Therapy” is a simple formulation of natural magnesium chloride minerals from the ocean, blended with a signature aromatherapy blend of: Ylang Ylang, sandalwood & bergamot to add a touch of rejuvenating aroma to your bathing experience. Balneotherapy commonly refers to mineral baths; the term may also apply to water treatments using regular hot or cold tap water. Balneotherapy used in conjunction with magnesium chloride minerals has been practised for centuries for assisting in soothing many problem skin conditions, relieving arthritis, aches and pains, detoxing and reducing stress and anxiety. Studies into the effectiveness of magnesium chloride bathing have been practised in the health and wellness industry for decades. One of the earliest reported doctors use of magnesium chloride was in 1915. A French surgeon, Prof Pierre Delbet, M.D, was looking for a solution

to cleanse wounds, because he had found that the traditional antiseptic solutions actually mortified tissues and facilitated the infection instead of preventing it. He also found through clinical and experimental studies that magnesium chloride was good therapy for: muscular cramps, the nervous system, psoriasis, eczema, and asthma. So whether you’re bathing in a MagnaPool swimming pool or using the natural mineral science therapy body products at home in your bath, this transdermal absorption of magnesium chloride minerals through your skin will turn any bathing or swimming experience into a therapeutic health retreat journey. Magnesium Vitamin The important way to detox

by Praneel Lal

Since we were young our mothers used to stress the importance of Vitamin C. Whether it was a glass of orange juice with breakfast, or those chewable Vitamin C tablets, they became a staple part of the young Australian’s diet. As we got older we took the benefits of Vitamin C for granted and have since further been exposed to a bevy of other vitamins on the market. Over the past 5 years the media has not only brought us 50 new ‘fab’ diets, or what skeptical individuals would like to call ‘fad’ diets, they have opened our eyes to the elements of ‘detoxing’. It seems as though wherever you look you can take your pick from an array of detox kits broadly available in the marketplace. Everyone has heard of the 7-day-detox and 15-day-detox, available at your local chemist or health food store. Some detox kits have diet plans that are unnecessarily restrictive, and give dietary advice with poor or no rationale. This then brings a questionable issue to light. Why Detox? The ancient forms of detoxing have included using Algo Clay, Oil Pulling and would you believe it, fasting! Thankfully now with the beneficial combination of Vitamin C and Magnesium there are new less complex ways of detoxing our bodies. Vitamin C and Magnesium work together in detoxing the body. Vitamin C is important for the heart, it protects against LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol oxidation, blood platelet clogging and arterial rigidness. It is also instrumental in collagen production. When it comes to Magnesium, few people in today’s society are aware of how vital this mineral is for your overall health. After oxygen, water, and food in general, magnesium may be the most important constituent needed by our bodies,

36

activating over 300 different biochemical reactions necessary for our body to function properly. Magnesium has been noted to protect against heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, and Type II diabetes, not to mention a host of other factors. Some say it is more important than calcium, potassium or sodium and actually acts in regulating all three in our bodies. Contrary to popular misconceptions, it is magnesium that is most important when building strong healthy bones and preventing bone loss, more than calcium. Magnesium and Vitamin C together help improve blood vessel flexibility and healthy heart function. When it comes to detoxing both work together to assist in purifying the body and ridding it of all toxins, which in the long term can prevent diseases. A form that is available to consumers is Magnesium ascorbate, which provides the essential magnesium mineral combined with buffered Vitamin C for the human body. This can be available in a tablet form, when taken daily it works in balancing the body’s core elements and maintaining stomach functions and overall health when combined with exercise and a balanced diet of fruit and vegetables. Anti Aging Era The

A well-rounded and natural approach. by Vanessa Saleh

From Botox to Viagra, both women and men are seeking quick fixes of the modern day fountain of youth. People are continuing to seek out remedies and trends that will keep themselves young, vibrant and potent. Anti-Aging drugs today will be the recipients of a consumer-driven force in medicine like no other phenomenon we have ever seen in the past. Quite simple - people want to stay young; they do not want to age. In recent years the anti–aging industry has hammered us with everything from; face lifting bras, Acai Berries, injectable fillers and carbon dioxide injections to help turn back the clock. According to ‘The Economist’, beauty spending on make-up, diet, exercise, fragrance, skin, hair products and cosmetic surgery, adds up to $160 billion –a–year worldwide. Women especially will jump at any anti-aging remedy and unfortunately a lot of them are just marketing scams in a bottle. I always say, if you look at nature and study the way it effortlessly works to keep itself flourishing, young, vibrant and beautiful, then the answers for staying young can possibly be found right within mother natures own beauty cabinet. People are discovering there are more natural ways to turn back the clock, and it starts with just the right frame of mind. In America alone every year $34 billion dollars is spent on ‘Alternative Health’ according to ‘The National Institute of Health (NIH)’. People are starting to recognise and understand that there is always a natural approach to assist you in staying youthful, and the one that costs you nothing is the right mindset “If you feel young, you look young”. Exercise is also key, staying active and eating right. I am a big believer in the Mediterranean diet, (which is actually not a diet at all), it is just a way of life that can be easily adjusted to. The French live by it and all the countries on the Mediterranean coastlines such as; Italy, Greece and Spain eat this way daily. You

should always drink lots of water with a squeeze of lemon, this is a great way to Detox your liver and remove the free radicals which your liver produces when filtering the bloodstream. Lemons are loaded with Vitamin C, and this natural antioxidant will neutralise these free radicals improving your overall health. Your diet should consist of eating tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese & feta, eggs, olive oil, yogurt, grilled fish, meats and lots of fruits and salads. To spoil yourself, top it all off with a good glass of red wine, also laden with antioxidants that can be beneficial to your health when consumed in moderation. Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that is produced and found in the skins of grapes. It is no surprise that red wine has some of the highest levels of Resveratrol out of any natural food. There was a famous study done and reported by 60 minutes called the ‘French Parodox’. This study proved the people in France were less likely to die of heart attacks because of the relatively large amounts of wine they consumed protected their hearts. Most people take a multi-vitamin a day and if that’s all you do that’s ok because most of us do not get enough of the RDA of vitamins and minerals through our food. Another important one is "Omega 3" (fish oils) these are so important for your brain, heart and nerve cell communication, which is essential for mental health. Now if you look at most diet intakes, especially in Western cultures, we eat a lot of foods high in calcium, but not magnesium. Magnesium is often referred to as the “Anti Aging” mineral, because it is responsible for over 300 crucial enzyme reactions and cellular processes in our body. Over 65% of the world’s population is deficient in magnesium; it is a very important mineral and one that is often overlooked. Magnesium deficiency is seen in all major diseases, and higher levels of magnesium often have a major impact on recovery. For example, if you are given a shot of magnesium after having a

43

“There is no one true fountain of youth, but a balance of a little bit of everything will assist you in living a more youthful and invigorating life”. heart attack, it improves your changes of recovery by 50%. You can take magnesium a few ways to help restore your levels.

Orally – Magnesium supplements can be taken daily either in a powder or pill make-up and can be found at most chemists or health food stores.

Transdermally (through the skin) – Soaking in magnesium chloride minerals can assist in raising your levels internally. MagnaPool produces its own 100% natural magnesium chloride soak that can be added to your bath a few times a week. If you have your very own MagnaPool, use it like a health and beauty spa, because you can not only benefit from mineral bathing to assist in staying youthful but use it for daily exercise. There is no one true fountain of youth, but a balance of a little bit of everything will assist you in living a more youthful and invigorating life.

"The grass is always greener on the other side of a MagnaPool."

"We have recently installed a fabulous inground swimming pool with the new MagnaPool system. Put simply the water is cool, refreshing and therapeutic to swim in. Our young daughter has an allergy to chlorine, so until now, swimming in the town pool has resulted in much sneezing, nose blowing, rashes and very sore red eyes! In our own pool with the MagnaPool system we have none of that. After swimming in the water our skin is refreshed and soothed, and any rashes associated with skin conditions have diminished. We live on a drought ravaged property in Manilla, one hour drive from Tamworth, with extreme conditions of dust, wind, heat and scarcity of water. We backwash the water from our MagnaPool system onto the lawn and trees to provide us with an oasis of green in our dry and barren landscape. The pool is refreshing and so is the garden. Thank you MagnaPool"

By the happy owner Jillian Atkins

Environment

by Gabrielle Green One of the primary attributes of your residential MagnaPool system is the ability to use the backwash water from cleaning your filter to fertilizing your garden and lawn. Subject to your local council by laws, you are able to dilute your water 5 to 1 in a holding tank and apply it to your garden. With a MagnaPool system in an average 50,000 litres pool, you can expect to backwash on average twice per year around 250 litres, making a total of 500 litres, which when diluted with preferably rainwater, makes 2,500 litres of nutritional natural fertilizer which your plants and lawn will love. The potassium content is great for building healthy root structures, whilst the magnesium is essential for chlorophyll and the greening of plants. The alternative of dumping waste salt water into either the storm water or sewerage system is not good for the environment. Storm water systems often discharge into intermittent creeks and fresh water rivers adding to both the salinity and sodicity of the aqua system causing a problem for the health of both flora and fauna. Sewage systems struggle to maintain anaerobic reactions due to chlorine and disinfection by-product contamination, and for those areas that recycle sewage water it is often impossible to remove the salt unless expensive reverse osmosis is performed. Even then the disposal of the salty water by-product of reverse osmosis is difficult for water authorities to dispose of safely without further impact on the environment. Cartridge filters may seem to be the answer as no backwash is required, however a water saving point of view, with the average garden hose running 15 litres per minute, when the cartridges are cleaned for more than 35 minutes per year, it wastes more water than the MagnaPool System. In a heavy downpour your pool also overflows, flushing sodium chloride onto your lawn at a minimum of 4000 parts per million causing sodicity problems in your yard. When you have to drain

your pool because the cyanuric acid levels are too high or some repair to the interior needs to be undertaken, then it's on the lawn or down the drain. So it is clear that cartridge filters are also not the answer to our induced salinity problems. Some 90% of the 800,000 residential inground swimming pools in Australia run sodium chloride salt chlorinators and the average pool consumes 160kgs per year through overflows and backwashing. This equates to some 120,000 tonnes of salt finding its way back into the ecosystem and destroying it, commercial swimming pools are just as bad with the dosed liquid sodium hypochlorite reverting to TDS (total dissolved solids) which are primarily sodium chloride salts. With some public pools, super chlorinating twice per week and dumping thousands of litres of water at the same time you can add an indeterminate tonnage of salt to the 120k number. Clearly this is not sustainable and some municipalities like Bendigo (Vic), Santa Clara (California) and Toronto (Canada) have outlawed the discharge of salt chlorinated water into the waste water streams. MagnaPool worked with two environmental scientists from ENSR, now a division of worldwide AECOM, to determine the suitability of using discharge water on residential, commercial gardens and parkland. A comprehensive report determined that our backwash water when diluted 5 to 1 was a perfect natural fertilizer . Plants need both potassium and magnesium together with chlorides for healthy propagation. MagnaPool has relieved the ecosystem of undesirable discharge of contaminated water and turned your waste pool water into a desirable plant nutrient. When you convert your pool to a MagnaPool, you are doing your part to help both the environment, your parks and gardens. For those existing owners of a MagnaPool we have developed 51

our square line 750 litre Iquapod storage tank and a simple flat hose connection to your waste line on your filter. This can have your garden irrigated in 30 minutes. These tanks are available from your nearest Poolrite Plus outlet where you buy your MagnaPool minerals. If you are building a new pool you can purchase them from your MagnaPool dealer or Pool builder from April 2010. Order your Iquapod tank early as demand is expected to be high. Your MagnaPool professional can even install it for you. We have engaged a horticultural expert to develop more natural additives for your Iquapod tank and so look out for more exciting Magnaculture initiatives in the future.

URBAN MYTHS. I have heard that all mineral chloride salts including MagnaPool minerals are environmental vandalism when applied to gardens. Is that true? Absolutely not. Both the primary constituents of magnesium and potassium in chloride form are essential nutrients for plants and at the recommended dilution make the irrigation water run at a TDS of around 600 parts per million. Normal rainfall and watering from your rainwater tank further dilute the application to totally acceptable levels. This has been determined by our environmental scientists.

What is the average amount of backwash water generated each year in a MagnaPool system? I have heard that it is 20,000 Ltr per year. A 50,000 litres pool needs backwashing twice per year for an average of 400 litres p.a. When diluted correctly it will make 2000 litres of garden nutrients.

Surely the hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sodium chloride and sodium hypochlorite aren’t as alarming as you make out. Don’t they just end up in the ocean where they came from? If it were only that simple. Unless you live close to the ocean these salts end up in treated recycled wastewater or torturously long intermittent watercourses that often dry out.

Someone once told me that you must dilute MagnaPool minerals 50 to 1 in the backwash to be effective on your garden is that right? No, that is the biggest urban myth of all, probably spread by competitors. If you diluted MagnaPool water 50 to 1 then the resultant TDS is 60 ppm. Town water in Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane run from between 200ppm and 450ppm with the primary salt being sodium and no marked detriment when watering gardens.

52

MagnaPool water gives you diarrhoea as it is salted with Epsom Salts? Epsom Salts are in fact magnesium sulphate and are not in the MagnaPool mix. In any case most people are not in the habit of drinking large amount of pool water. You would need to drink in excess of 10 litres to have the laxative effect that would come with magnesium chloride

A pool store told me that the MagnaPool mix of minerals contains over 40% sodium chloride (common salt) which is the same as the salt pool. They also said that MagnaPool does that to dilute the potassium content to make more money. This is truly outrageous and when the rumour started we were able to contact the laboratory engaged which performed the test. It was established that a competitor took two small unidentified 1Kg bags of salt powder into the lab. The subsequent results were dishonestly represented to the wholesale market as being the mix of MagnaPool. We then engaged the same laboratory to perform the correct test on a 10Kg bag of our minerals. The results confirmed that the minerals are substantially magnesium and potassium. Very small amounts of sodium compound were detected which we use as one of two constituents to sequester carbonates.

What are the primary roles of chloride in plant physiology and if plants cannot get it from MagnaPool water where do they get it from in nature? Chloride is essential for the opening and closing of plant pores (stomata), and is used by the plant to balance potassium. It aids in photosynthesis, diminishes fungal infections and lowers nitrate uptake which can be responsible for disease severity. In the university study "Rainwater chemistry across the United States", (Ellen Root et al Nov 2004), the research team tested the chloride concentration in rainwater at 51 locations across the United States. When oceans evaporate, chloride anions travel with the water vapours. Chloride concentrations correlate with proximity to oceans, but surprisingly large concentrations were found in inland Arkansas. From the 51 sites chloride concentrations ranged from .11mg/litre to 1.44mg/litre. (Ellen root et al 2004). Using MagnaPool backwash water with it's moderate chloride content when diluted is a wonderful natural way for plants to get the required uptakes of magnesium and potassium, together with chloride anions. Especially in times of lower rainfalls and locations that are a long way from the coast . • Iquapod 750L backwash tank available soon from your Poolrite store. AGNA CULTURE IN YOUR GARDEN

Your IQUAPOD MagnaPool backwash tank will contain approximately 750 litres of diluted MagnaPool water, when you backwash 150 litres of pool water and dilute it with rainwater at 5:1.

The 3 elements in the diluted mix are Magnesium, Potassium and Chloride with acceptable levels of Sodium well under quantities found in suburban water supplies. Magnesium and Potassium were normally found in the white ash residue of bush and forest fires, but since colonisation and destruction of this habitat has occurred over the last 200 years in Australia, the usual source for these mineral ions has been suppressed. Your MagnaPool water, in sensible quantities, will restore the healthy mineral balance in your garden and is compatible with other common fertilizers. MagnaPool systems use absolute minimal amounts of water in backwash modes which also - because of the glass filtration media - use less water than a conventional cartridge filter. It may have been that in the past cartridge filters were the most water efficient methods for pool filtration, however with the advent of the MagnaPool system that perceived advantage has been substantially eroded. If you consider the amount of tap or rainwater consumed in hosing down a cartridge, the make up of your pool by rain showers and the need to marginally dilute to avoid excessive build up of cyanuric acid, then MagnaPool filtration is a clear winner in the water savings stakes over cartridge filtration. This coupled with the expense of replacing costly cartridges on a

54

by Gabrielle Green

regular basis; together with the time taken to dismantle the filter and thoroughly hose out the debris mean that effortless task of a MagnaPool backwash by just a rotation of the multiport valve is the clear environmental winner. Not only that, but your glass filtration medium has a life expectancy in excess of 10 years and in that time some cartridge systems will have had to have spent over $1,000 on replacement elements. Magnaculture is the evolution from your pool to your garden and deals solely in your pool landscape, plant selection and maintenance of your garden’s wellbeing. The purchase of an IQUAPOD home irrigation system from your pool builder or Poolrite Plus store will boost your decision to invest in a MagnaPool system. In the future you will also be able to purchase compatible natural fertilizers to complement the MagnaPool minerals from your Poolrite Plus store or Licensed Magnaculture Landscape Supplier. Remember to look for the Magnaculture brand for synergistic fertigation additions.

What form of fast acting nutrients is in my diluted MagnaPool water that is beneficial for my garden?

In which soils will diluted MagnaPool water perform the best?

MAGNESIUM.

MagnaPool water will work fine in both acidic and alkaline soils together with sandy soils.

•Magnesium is the central atom of chlorophyll and essential to the life of a green plant. Without it the plant cannot capture energy from the sun for growth and development.

Where should I not use MagnaPool water?

•Magnesium also acts as a phosphorus carrier and is necessary for cell division and protein formation.

•It should not be used where there pre-exists either heavy saline soils or salty water for irrigation source.

•Magnesium is essential for plant respiration and the activation of a number of enzyme systems.

•Some plants are sensitive to chloride like avocado trees, flowers and grapes.

•Care should be taken in foliage watering not to burn the leaves, however in the dilute conditions of Magnaculture it should not be a problem.

•Magnesium deficiency is evident in the leaves of plants when you see dark green patches with yellow areas in between. POTASSIUM •Potassium regulates osmotic pressure and over 60 enzyme systems. It also aids magnesium in photosynthesis.

•Potassium promotes root growth and stronger stems and increases resistance to cold and water stress, whilst reducing pest and disease attack.

CHLORIDE. •Chloride is important also as it helps regulate photosynthesis and the function of several enzymes. It is essential for osmotic adjustment and stomatal regulation of water loss.

Where can I get more information? In the near future you can go to www.magnaculture.com to learn more about Magnaculture and your garden and how you can play your part in reducing the Environmental load on our ecosystem. If there are any questions in the meantime, please email: ggreen@magnapool.com

•Chloride aids in the transport of Magnesium, Potassium and calcium nutrients within the plant, whilst reducing attack from plant diseases.

E

nvironmental Solutions for Swimming Pools by Ross Palmer CEO of Poolrite and MagnaPool

I acquired Poolrite Equipment in 1999 after a lifetime in the steel industry with my former company Palmer Tube Mills. I became passionate about the environment around 1995 via my children who are now well into adulthood. Steel mills can be dirty places, and for eight years I lived in Chicago the home place of our largest steel plant. Fifteen years ago, believe it or not, the USA led Australia in environmental legislation. Some of that legislation was peculiar, but some made sense. So you can imagine our surprise and thoughts of hypocrisy when my steel company was cited by the EPA for “fugitive particulates” - mother earth dust blowing around from the 40 acres of land surrounding the plant. In those days compliance was for my company and me, but today it is a totally different story. At the MagnaPool and Poolrite Companies, we now try to predict trends to be ahead of the game in an environmental sense, and for that I thank my children. The “green colour” in our Poolrite Logo, which has been the same for 30 years, now stands for something. I am an inveterate inventor, and some four years ago put my mind around the problems that accompanied most swimming pools, with the sometimes-toxic chemicals, large amounts of sodium and waste of water that was being dumped back into the environment. With this now passionate drive, I set about helping protect the environment and MagnaPool was born. MagnaPool is the world's first pool sanitation system that produces natural, therapeutic and environmentally friendly mineral water for swimming pools. The end result from my initial dream for MagnaPool is a system that produces non-synthetic chlorine

58

as a by-product of a process that removes the precursors for the production of dangerous trihalomethanes and removes chloramines at the same time from the water. The system uses electrolytic chemistry with primarily natural magnesium and potassium minerals from the ocean to produce a pure, healthy mineral based water for domestic and commercial swimming pools. The MagnaPool system is now successfully being used in swim schools in Queensland with fantastic results. Swim instructors who previously suffered from major skin and respiratory disorders no longer have those problems. The filtration quality is zero turbidity (the same as ionized water) and in a 650,000 litres commercial MagnaPool at Kuranda in North Queensland, the backwash water consumption over 12 months was only 60,000 litres, as opposed to other commercial pools that would lose around 1,500,000 litres of water every year. The MagnaPool natural mineral based water, made up of Magnesium and Potassium minerals can be backwashed into a rainwater tank, diluted 5:1 and 100% of it can be saved and reused to irrigate the lawn and trees around the pool, as these minerals are extremely beneficial for plant nourishment and growth. I feel quite proud that our engineering team has developed a world-class natural solution that requires none of the six or so toxic additives that would normally balance a pool. The system is available nationwide and internationally.

For hundreds of millions of years, the oceans have effortlessly maintained balance between their countless inhabitants and the waters they populate. What appears to be a vast expanse of empty water is actually teeming with life, microorganisms and all. An estimated 1,400 new marine species are discovered every year. If even 1% of the ocean’s life forms populated a swimming pool (to scale, of course), this would pose a sanitation nightmare. Now, do the oceans require additional sanitation from outside sources? For all the oceans’ inhabitants (and their waste products), there is no giant chemist mixing up buckets of chemicals to dump in the water. Nature is not designed that way. Neither is a MagnaPool. A MagnaPool, patterned after nature’s blueprints, works to naturally sanitise your pool in two primary ways. First, the patent pending MagnaPool filtration system naturally and efficiently removes microscopic organic matter in the water that bacteria feed on. The MagnaPool system naturally converts Magnesium minerals into Magnesium Hydroxide (also known as milk of magnesia), which is so gentle that many people apply it directly to the skin to heal problem skin conditions. In the MagnaPool system, this amazing magnesium compound acts as a natural coagulant and flocculent that filters out even the tiniest of organic impurities from your water. Without anything to feed on, bacteria simply prefer not to reside in your swimming pool. Second, the MagnaPool Hydroxinator generates non-synthetic chlorine as a natural by-product of hydroxination, a process that mimics the production of non-synthetic chlorine that occurs within our own bodies to fight bacteria and disease. This non-synthetic chlorine acts as a sanitation system to protect the integrity of your water quality. Not only is a MagnaPool designed to naturally maintain its own balance, it is also designed to be a balanced component within the greater environmental context. The oceans, which occupy nearly 71% of the earth’s surface and which can run hundreds of metres deep, are an integral part of our planet’s cycle of water. All the water that ever is, exists now in some form as part of this cycle. 60

nvironmental Pool by Sarah Vance

Remember the giant ocean chemist who doesn’t exist? Imagine if he were dumping synthetic chemicals in the oceans to keep it clean. Those chemicals would remain throughout the cycle of water and could very well end up in the tap that you drink from. Have you ever thought about your home and swimming pool as a part of this cycle? Unfortunately, most swimming pools generate large amounts of imbalanced wastewater that is environmentally toxic and disrupts the balance of the greater water cycle. Traditional salt-water pools contribute to dangerously high salinity levels in the environment, while traditional chlorine pools dose chemically laden wastewater back into the water cycle. When used properly, as it was designed, a complete MagnaPool system wastes no water. Because a MagnaPool naturally maintains balance within its own water, it does not disrupt the balance of the greater water cycle. Unlike traditional pool wastewater, which contributes to environmental issues, your MagnaPool’s backwash water can safely be used to water your lawn and garden (when diluted 5:1)**. MagnaPool is a well-balanced system inspired by Mother Nature’s ingenious blueprints and put to life with the help of modern science. From the earth’s great cycle of water, down to the placement of each and every atom, nature creates its own balance and order. MagnaPool has been designed both to mimic nature’s effortless design and to fit within the greater scheme of natural order. Just the way Mother Nature intended. ** Subject to local council regulations

Tips

for saving water

With water a scarce resource for us all, it is no wonder the environmentally conscious are taking steps to minimise water wastage. It is surprising to learn that not only are there ways of saving water in the home, but you can also save water out of the home. The ten tips below highlight ways you can avoid wasting water when it comes to your pool, garden and the general outdoors.

by Praneel Lal

Some pool owners are known to backwash their filters more often than necessary, thus wasting water, water balancing products and MagnaPool minerals. Your filter will work more efficiently if you allow your filter pressure to increase between 20 and 40 KPA before backwashing.

Whenever your children are in the pool, bomb diving can sometimes get out of control, so it is a good idea to make sure kids are well supervised. By minimising or restricting this type of behaviour you not only avoid accidents but prevent water loss due to extreme splashing.

It has been found that when you water garden plants in the early morning, it helps in reducing evaporation and is also a good defense mechanism against garden pests.

A pool cover is a great way to prevent evaporation and the need to regularly top up your pool’s water level. Without a pool cover, sometimes more than half the water in your pool can evaporate over a year. Especially on windy days. It is important to cover your pool to reduce evaporation.

Use water that you have in your home (as long as it doesn’t have high levels of detergents or chemicals) to water your plants. This water is known as ‘greywater’

Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways, under the house and walkways. If you have a rainwater tank in your yard use the rainwater to top up your pool.

For any hanging baskets, planters and pots, place ice cubes under the moss or dirt to give your plants a cool drink of water and help eliminate water overflow.

Avoid purchasing water toys (such as tarps and water slides) which require a constant stream of water for the summer months. Did you know that just splashing of the pool water in salt pools can kill your plants and scrubs around the pool? 63

Little Mineral Pools of Hope The Forgotten Global Health Crisis of Burns and how one man's story launched a new charitable cause at MagnaPool

Burns are the only kind of injury that happens to more women than men and that is because most of the domestic chores done by women are on open fires, but more tragically often because of domestic abuse. Disabling burns affect men, women and children all around the world and more than 6 million people worldwide suffer from severe burns every year, that restricts crucial functions like; walking, bending an arm or just functioning normally in everyday life. MagnaPool received a phone call one day from a man by the name of Vaughn Livermore. Vaughn was in a light airplane crash 24 years ago, which left him with 3rd degree burns over 75% of his body from the accident. His life forever changed, where simple things like exercise, swimming in most pools and even some oceans were not possible anymore as all were too harsh on his skin. Vaughn heard about the MagnaPool system and all the amazing testimonials and benefits of the mineral based water being therapeutic and gentle on the skin and body. Vaughn’s lifestyle has now forever changed since he installed a MagnaPool in his own home. He now spends hours in the MagnaPool water that actually helps soothe his skin and provides him with a safe environment to exercise in. This simple lifestyle addition has given Vaughn a new lease on life. Little Mineral Pools of Hope is part of the MagnaPool foundation “Formula Green”. Our goal with Little Mineral Pools of Hope, is to help raise awareness on this global health crisis and in turn raise funds to install MagnaPools’ in burn victims homes and communities where people have been affected by fire. One MagnaPool little mineral pool can bring change and hope to one persons life, imagine what lots of Little Mineral Pools could do? MagnaPool is currently working on locating a home or community pool in Victoria, Australia, where the tragic bushfires of 2009 tore apart and destroyed lives and communities. If you know of anyone that needs a Little Mineral Pool, or if you would like to donate to a pool project, either with service, supplies or money, please contact us at info@magnapool.com with the information or story. MagnaPool The Low Maintenance Pool A letter written by Glen Cooper, Operations Manager Poolsmart Centenary Queensland.

In the previous issue and in this issue you will read about the health benefits that come with owning a MagnaPool. My name is Glenn Cooper and I have been asked to write about the benefits of the MagnaPool from the economic side. Over the past 16 months I have looked after one of the first MagnaPools in my area in Figtree Pocket, QLD: as the technician responsible for the maintenance for its first 12 months and now as the manager for my team of technicians, I can truthfully say that the MagnaPool is one of the most cost effective pools I have ever had the privilege to work on. During the past 16 months Brisbane has experienced 2 major storms with lots of rain in both of them. Out of all my clientele, salt chlorinated straight chlorine and MagnaPool, the MagnaPool suffered the least. The first 2 kinds of pools which are the traditional pools suffered from the rain, dramatically changing their chemical balance and even sending some green. As we all know any changes to the water chemistry bares a cost and that cost sometimes can be quite expensive. Where the MagnaPool on the other hand remained quite stable and required minimal re-balancing to the water chemistry. Most of the pools that I looked after when I was a field technician were the average suburban 50,000 Ltr, whilst the MagnaPool was 135,000 Ltr. With this in mind I can truthfully say that the MagnaPool even though it was larger, was cheaper to maintain than its smaller suburban cousin. The cost difference was 3 72

to 1. Over 12 months the average pool through the storms, cost around $3,000 to stabilise while the MagnaPool only cost about $1,000. Therefore in conclusion, I can say that the MagnaPool is not only very healthy for your body and wellbeing but it is also very friendly on the household budget. We here at Poolsmart Centenary are happy to endorse the MagnaPool and are happy to help and answer any questions or queries that you may have.

Thanks to the creation of a patented mix of minerals, MagnaPool won a German GOLD WAVE award. “MagnaPool Minerals” work together with the “Hydroxinator” and represent a new way for water disinfection that is like bathing in a fresh mineral water lake. The benefits of water treatments have beneficial effects on the skin and body and the back wash water can be re-used on the garden.

MagnaPool has developed a new “medium” for pool filters “Diamond Kleen” and MagnaPool distributes the product in Germany. It’s an amorphous recycling glass that is produced in specific factories. It accelerates the speed of water and ensures the backwashing water is cleaner and it shortens the time of the backwash, therefore saving water.

MagnaPool Deutschland Setting the Standard in Germany

German companies have long been regarded for excellence in innovation and pioneers in engineering. When considering quality brands Audi, BMW, Braun, Bosch and Miele all spring to mind. These companies have built their reputation on developing the highest quality products and delivering customer service befitting a luxury purchase.

appropriate certification. In 2008 MagnaPool engaged the leading water chemistry institute “Hygieneinstitut des Ruhrgebietes” to monitor a trial pool at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Mainz, Germany. The testing procedure is rigorous and complex to ensure that only the highest quality products are suitable for public swimming pools.

In 2006, the founders of MagnaPool Deutschland, Frank Boermann, Christian Dibisch & Joachim Bahrke recognised these qualities in MagnaPool. Having an already successful business in WFT – World Fishing Tackle, the infrastructure of warehousing, distribution, personnel and IT was already in place. Frank with a background in chemical engineering and Joachim a background in cosmetics were the ideal combination to understand and promote the MagnaPool philosophy of Health, Beauty & Environment to the German market.

With the certification process now complete, and with an A+ report card, MagnaPool Deutschland can now move forward into the commercial pool market with confidence to allow more German people to experience the revolution in mineral water science - MagnaPool.

In May 2007, MagnaPool won 2 major awards which were announced by the largest German pool magazine “Schwimmbad & Sauna”. Both MagnaPool Minerals and Diamond Kleen won the German Golden Wave award for "Innovative New Product". On the back of the awards and subsequent publicity, demand for MagnaPool increased and so the company saw the time to move into the commercial pool market.

How does a MagnaPool work? A MagnaPool works naturally to clean your pool in three ways. First, MagnaPool minerals comprised of Magnesium chloride, (one of the main components) is known for it's use as an antiseptic. Second, MagnaPools special filtration process naturally removes organic impurities and phosphates before bacteria and algae can feed on them and grow. Third, the MagnaPool Hydroxinator naturally produces non-synthetic chlorine in a process very similar to one that takes place within our own bodies to fight bacteria and disease. These natural and efficient processes leave your pool clean and clear, with mineral water that is gentle on eyes and beneficial to the skin and body.

Aside from the initial purchasing price, what does it typically cost to maintain a domestic MagnaPool system? How does this compare with maintenance costs of other pool sanitation systems? The typical annual running cost for a standard 50,000litres domestic swimming pool with a traditional salt-water system is about $1,500*. A MagnaPool system in the same swimming pool would typically cost under $1,000 per year to maintain.

*In this scenario, a MagnaPool system provides an estimated savings on running costs of up to 35%+ or over $500 in annual savings. These figures do not include water savings, which are significant.
