Design is a question of attitude. When my grandfather founded Wilkhahn with my great uncle, they turned timber in the surrounding beech forests into superbly crafted seating. At the time, many other neighbouring factories in the erstwhile “chair valley” were doing the same thing. In the 1950s the focus turned to design. New materials and innovative manufacturing technologies were beginning to appear. Improving the utility value of the furniture moved to centre stage. Principles like “the product follows the idea” and “form follows function” embodied the essence of the key brand values of innovation and design quality. As a result, simple pieces of furniture became office chairs, multi-purpose seating, conference chairs and items for lounges and waiting areas … Wilkhahn’s slogan was “Wilkhahn. Sitzt.” literally meaning Wilkhahn sits, or that its products are a perfect fit. And it perfectly described the company’s key competency – superb seating. Since then, this passion for developing superior products has kept a firm hold on us. But it doesn’t stop there. For over 20 years, conference, training and informal communication have been other focuses in the interests of better design for office environments. Because these areas have plenty of potential for improvement. I’m proud that we repeatedly succeed in developing products that are considered exemplary in the industry worldwide. By architects, customers, our employees and last but not least, by our competitors. As a result, new standards are created that, at their best, make a positive contribution to fostering culture. This doesn’t just apply to the products, but to the ecological and energy concept adopted, or Wilkhahn’s employee profit-sharing system. We’d be delighted if you encountered this approach in the design of our ranges and shared our philosophy. Just like many renowned customers and friends all over the world do. So I hope the new Wilkhahn catalogue provides a whole host of ideas and inspiration for better design in office environments.

A premium company – worldwide. Unlike virtually any other company, Wilkhahn stands worldwide for design made in G ermany – a label of quality per se. It offers first-class office chairs, tables and seating for conference interiors. These are products that are some of the best the industry has to offer internationally. Founded in 1907 by the Wilkening and Hahne families, the company dedicated itself back in the 1950s to the principles of modernism. It became a pioneering enterprise for modern furniture design. Since then, Wilkhahn has been developing furniture that excels as regards timeless forms, pioneering function and top quality. Examples include the classic office chairs from the FS-Line (1980) and Modus (1994), the mobile Confair folding table (1994) or the trans parent skid-base chair Aline (2004). Awarded with numerous international design prizes, they’re considered contemporary milestones in the history of office and contract furniture. The latest examples of global benchmarks are the threedimensional dynamic office chair “ON” (2009), and the eye-catching, technologically innovative multi-purpose chair “Chassis” (2010). And then there’s conference chair “Graph” that sets new standards in terms of comfort, quality and attractive design. The company’s objective to surpass Wilkhahn customers’ expectations time and again covers much more than just the development and manufacture of premium products. As a winner of the German Environmental Prize, Wilkhahn has been actively practising social and environmental responsibility for decades. But most importantly, a 600-strong workforce across the globe with a highly professional skill-set pulls out all the stops to support Wilkhahn customers in the best possible way – and on all continents.

ON.®

ON

A new dimension in flexibility. A natural stimulus for body and mind. A case of excellent design at its best. The main causes of back pain lie in insufficient physical activity or too few challenges to our bodies while we are sitting down. Anybody spending seven or more hours a day at their desk should have an office chair that has a track record of preventing these problems. A chair that actively fosters and develops physical capabilities and looks nothing like the equipment found in doctors’ surgeries. A chair that conveys comfort and trust as a matter of course. And is also child’s play to adjust, automatically adapting itself, so that “correct” sitting postures become a thing of the past. This is ON in a nutshell. The global milestone for the new dimension in seating. A fluid combination of natural, three-dimensional movement and simultaneous relaxation that rouses both mind and body.

9

10

ON

11

Functions. The chair is so spacious it allows a number of different sitting postures and can easily be adjusted while you are seated. Counterpressure in the backrest. Fast to adjust with just two fingers and only 4.5 rotations just as you like – for people weighing from 45 to 120 kg. The conveniently placed wheel is integrated into the button for locking the tilt of the seat. Armrests. They follow all the body’s movements. With just one hand, heights are adjustable by pressing a button. The depth and width can also be adjusted by pushing and turning the seat. The choice of three armrest pads (standard, padded and leather-upholstered) is sure to suit any tastes. Backrests. The height of the backrest is intuitive to adjust while seated. Simply grasp it and push it upwards. No buttons or levers are needed. Seat depth. The ingeniously simple, patented seat depth adjustment is available on request. Grasp the front edge of the seat with both hands and pull it out diagonally upwards. Push it in diagonally downwards to shorten the seat depth.

12

Trimension® – a world premiere Because our backs start in our hips, completely new, three- dimensional kinematics was developed to produce the exceptional range of movement ON offers. It does not just enable forwards, backwards and sideways movement, but also pivotal motion that is essential for stabilising the spine. Two separately moveable swing plates, just like two thighs, lie at the core of the patented mechanics. The position of the pivotal points and way they work are exactly like knee and hip joints. As a result, the body’s equilibrium remains in perfect balance – no matter what posture you adopt or way you move. And this new dimension in seating quickly becomes something you can take for granted. The combination of the extremely flexible seat shell and elastic and upholstered back frame (Flexframe) with its 3D mechanics ensures automatic support that is perfectly in tune with our bodies. Healthy movement is coupled with comfortable relaxation. Inspiring without tiring – enhancing our sense of well- being and personal performance.

ON

Upholstery options. Healthy seating should not be a question of seniority in a company. Which is why each and every model benefits from the exceptional advantages of Trimension® and all adjustment functions. Three backrest heights and three types of upholstery offer scope for subtle variations in design. Fiberflex. In the standard version, the seat and backrest are covered with this innovative fabric. It is permanently elastic, breathable and kind to the skin. Due to its three-dimensional design, it resembles additional micro-cushioning. Fabric covers. The seat and backrest can optionally be covered in fabric and leather from the extensive Wilkhahn collection. Management grade upholstery. The slender side facings and finely stitched seams on the extra padded covers are a sign of first class craftsmanship. They are a guarantee of a dignified and discreetly luxurious feeling to the new dimension in seating.

rail is designed like the cantilever chairs. All four-legged chairs, with Fiberflex or fabric covers, are stackable.

Conference armchair with Trimension®. In contrast to the ffice chairs, the armchair stands on a formal, carefully matched o four-star aluminium base with glides. This fosters a tidy, uncluttered look. The fixed armrests also have the same effect. The armchairs are optionally available with a permanent or adjustable seating height.

Cantilever chair. The seat and backrest design is the same as that of the four-legged chair. All Fiberflex or fabric-covered types are stackable, but management-grade upholstery types for more discerning tastes are not.

Modus. Very attractive. Maximum comfort. Crafted to perfection. In the case of Modus, Klaus Franck and Werner Sauer’s catapulted the principle of less complex seating to the technical capabilities and aesthetics of the 21st century. The combination of minimal material usage, maximum transparency and optimum comfort in terms of support and movement turned Modus into a leading example of a new office chair generation. Up until today, Modus is in a class of its own and stands for dynamic seating in its most accomplished form. The swing plates, made of moulded die-cast aluminium, lie at the heart of Modus. With compact synchro-adjustment capabil-

18

ity, they guarantee unequalled fluidity of movement in the backrest and seat. Equally attractive and sophisticated is the covered back frame with the characteristic cut-out sections at waist level: it adjusts to different body shapes and supports you in any posture. It also allows air to circulate, so the chair feels pleasant. If you are in a position of responsibility, office and conference chairs are the last things to cut back on. Which is why the Executive range is all about quality not quantity. It combines extraordinary comfort and the sophisticated look of Modus with an appropriately high quality touch and a certain cachet. Seat and backrest are covered in flat cushions with extremely supple leather. With carefully stitched seams, they emphasise the slender shape and also lend the furniture a high quality casual appeal. As a result, the Modus concept also becomes something of a statement in executive offices. Modus is modern, but not trendy, distinctive – but not dominant, comfortable – but not luxurious, top notch quality – but not extravagant. As an office, conference or cantilever chair, Modus Executive stands for a progressive and dynamic style of business management.

Modus

Design: Klaus Franck, Werner Sauer and wiege (cantilevers: with Fritz Frenkler and Justus Kolberg)

In terms of attractiveness and ergonomics, Modus is also an impressive addition to conference areas. Mental agility, physical relaxation and strong aesthetic appeal are a superb mix, particularly during long meetings. The furniture comes with synchroadjustment, or contoured seat, a medium-high backrest or shoulder support. Modus has a transparent cover, or informal flat cushioning.

The meticulously crafted, hand-sewn covers guarantee easy 足exchange if design concepts change, or wear and tear occurs after years of use. As a result, Modus plays a truly sustainable role in a corporate culture that stands apart for the clear, forward-looking image it projects.

The Modus Compact cantilevers are available in two backrest heights and optionally stackable. The four-legged visitor chairs also offer upholstered backrest shells. The models are a par足 ticularly good choice for customer-service areas, seminar, presentation and meeting rooms. The spacious Modus Medium 足cantilever chairs are at home in conferences or in executive offices. Similarly to the smaller models, they have the distinctive collar-like upper edge to the backrest with a leather upholstered crescent shaped grip. For discerning customers demanding exclusive comfort, a certain cachet and quality of craftsmanship, the Modus Executive cantilever chairs are upholstered with casual flat cushions made of fine-quality leather. The upper edge of the backrest is straight.

An eye for detail in outstanding quality: the aluminium die-case armrests are upholstered in stitched leather coverings. And in addition to models with synchronous adjustment, chairs with moulded, rigid seat bearers are also available for conference areas.

The backrest frame that is open at the top is elastic and makes sideways flexibility possible. The mechanics can be customised to personal comfort preferences and consist of torsion springs that when twisted create an especially pleasant progression of the counterpressure.

FS-Line. Timeless form. Durable quality. Easy handling.

FS-Line

A range of classic office chairs that has written history and three decades on is still one of the world’s best. In terms of activating movement, extreme durability and ease of use, the FS-Line remains exemplary up to the present day. The FS-Line eliminated complexity from seating and consequently became a global yardstick in dynamic seating. An extremely flexible, spacious seating shell is suspended between two swivel arms and the front pivotal axis. As a result, it follows all the body’s movements and supports it in any posture. Once the seat height and counterpressure of the backrest are set, the FS chair literally does all the rest itself. The most minute of movements and shifts in weight suffice for that vital change of posture.

Simpler? Not possible. The combination of seating shell and swivel mechanics is the embodiment of industrial design. Form and function in perfect harmony. 25

From a swivel chair to a chair for meetings, from cantilever chairs, to the exclusive executive and conference chair range, the wide range allows coherent design of all areas of the company in the same ergonomic quality and distinctive design of the FS-Line. And what is more, after several years of intensive use, many customers like to pep up their FS chairs by exchanging seat shells or cushions. So the FS-Line is an example of sustainable product design par excellence.

Neos. Harmonious design. Integrated functions. Intuitive handling. People of all shapes and sizes crave support, movement and a sense of well-being while sitting at their desks. Neos excels in its attractively understated design and appealing comfort. It also responds to the international demands made for intuitive adjustment options. The spacious, elastically formed backrest shell and the comfortable seat upholstery adapt to different body shapes. And the precisely co-ordinated, specially designed synchro- adjustment (for people weighing from 40 – 120 kg) encourages the body to move around and change posture. The harmonious and durable design of Neos makes it an ergonomic office chair for any demands that integrates with any backdrop.

It can be used as a visitor’s chair, as stackable restaurant, seminar or presentation seating, or as a stylish conference chair. The back of the grey-black, or white through-dyed seat shell is optionally available without upholstery, or with fabric-covered cushioning. Solis. Fluid design. Consistent materials. Outstanding comfort. The key to people and organisations working efficiently is a sense of clarity and direction. Consequently, the design of Solis is understated and deliberately pared down to include similar finishes, clear elements and parallel lines. Which creates a feeling of order and structure even when the chair is viewed from the back. The ergonomically designed seat and backrest shells are made of flexible plastic. The technical and precisely designed mechanical elements and frame structure are produced in high quality die-cast aluminium. Options such as armrests with adjustable heights, widths and depths, height-adjustable backrests or retractable seats, are perfectly integrated into the design. But

34

most importantly: all these functions require no extra levers to spoil the uncluttered look of the chair. The look and feel of Solis is geometric and the comfort it offers incredible. The mix of flexibly ergonomically-shaped seat and backrest shells with synchro-adjustment allows support in many postures and opens up a whole new world of dynamic and comfortable sitting. Whether you sit up straight or lounge 足 about, the wide opening angle with specially adjusted kine足 matics, ensures both concentration and movement and productivity and healthy bodies at the same time. Different backrest heights and cushions allow you to reflect different organisational hierarchies and design concepts. The 足 Sito cantilever chair range (design: wiege) offers matching 足visitor- and conference-chair models.

Graph. Trend-setting form. Innovative comfort. Impressive details. The choice of premium-design conference chairs has remained virtually unchanged for decades, so Graph is a welcome newcomer. Because the graphical quality of its cutting-edge shape stands out at first glance. And it’s this feature that the chair owes its name to. An organic seat shell is cut through horizontally and then vertically, modified and re-assembled to produce this ingenious product. The upshot is a fascinating mix of fluid and streamlined form, closed and transparent areas, harmony and contrast. Graph's distinctive design also offers superlative comfort – despite its slender shape. The steel seat and backrest frames feature wave springs, padding and additional cushioning. All of which adds up to upholstery in a class of its own. And what’s more, without any mechanics, the leaf spring in the seat's three-point support ensures three-dimensional flexibility to keep body and mind active. So it’s virtually a given that Graph has been well thought-out, detail. That no screws are visible on right down to the last the armrests. Or that frame-forms and frame-surfaces have been superbly well moulded and crafted. Or that the seams on the sophisticated covers precisely mirror the elegant, streamlined shape.

Sito. Distinctive. Flexible. Versatile. The Sito range is a more sophisticated re-interpretation of the traditional steel tube cantilever chair. The design is based on bridge construction: the load-bearing component comprises a tubular structure that is supported by slender, flat steel braces, with the backrest and seat ingeniously suspended. The braces absorb force, so the cross section of the tubular structure is smaller and the chair more flexible. The seat’s elasticity provides extra comfort. An innovative, multi-purpose cantilever family was born that can stand alone or be combined with Wilkhahn office chair and table ranges. Sito is typical of the flexibility expected from cantilevers, spacious and comfortable to sit on and with its very own style. Different frame finishes, armrest pads, backrest heights, upholstery and covering options offer a wide range of use and huge design possibilities.

Three backrest heights, different types of upholstery and a rmrest pads ensure plenty of options. In the models with black or white through-dyed armrest pads and seat and backrest shells, the backrest either comes with fabric-covered flat cushions or without upholstery. The models with flat cushions sewn into the coverings combine Sito’s stylish elegance with a luxurious, exclusive appeal.

With the club-grade upholstery, Sito becomes a cantilever chair with a distinctive presence. The upholstered armrests, seat and backrest shells are fully leathered covered. Additional cushioning ensures the chair delightfully comfortable. The upholstery and the perfect, hand-crafted workmanship convey a sense of comfort above and beyond the customary standards.

Ceno. Functional. Appealing. Stackable. In the past, formal meetings and informal business lunches used to be held in different places. But nowadays, both often happen in the same room. The meeting spills over into a working dinner, so that the next point on the agenda can be discussed. Backdrops change, but the furnishing solutions stay and have to be able to handle both situations. What is required is a professional-looking conference chair that you could almost imagine in your own home – a chair like Ceno. The four-legged upholstered chair combines the pure functionality of a comfortable conference chair, where six are stackable on top of one another, with the stylishness of a dining room seat. The clarity of the line is enhanced by careful details and soft moulds. The attractive form is matched by high quality. The die-cast aluminium seat frame and solid aluminium chair legs are bright chromium plated and the elastic back rest shell is upholstered. And finally, the breathable seat cushion inserted into a shell makes for comfortable sitting – even during long conferences. Exclusive fabrics and leather are options for the unitary coverings. With or without armrests – form and function convey modern meeting culture at its best.

Chassis. Innovative. Multi-purpose. Appealing. Virtually no other chair has caused more of a stir in the design world than multi-purpose chair Chassis. And it’s no surprise. Because the distinctive and ground-breaking design of the frame, consisting of deep-drawn sheet steel, indicates a highly innovative manufacturing process called space frame technology from the automotive industry. This technology combines elastic comfort, durability and strength with the precision and elegance of a fascinating design. The combination of a variety of unitary, membrane-like seat- and backrest-shells produces models that set any design concept apart. Available in monochrome versions with through-dyed plastic shells, or covered with robust, informal or elegant fabrics, or perhaps with slim-line upholstery and covered with leather, Chassis is a trendsetting statement in any backdrop. It’s an ideal choice for meeting rooms, recreational areas, workshops and studios, customer service areas, hotel rooms, restaurants or conferences. Quite simply, it’s a chair for contemporary life styles.

Aline. Stylish structures. Fascinating functions. Simple to use. The Aline range sets a new milestone in comfortable and attractive furnishing that requires a professional touch. Aline takes a minimalist approach to materials. It offers maximum transparency, ingenious functionality and looks distinctive, yet understated at the same time. Available as a multi-purpose chair or counter stool, as seating for visitors or office workers, as side tables, or tables in cafeterias and high tables. The skid-base chair, with its coherent and innovative shape, lies at the heart of the range. The cleverly designed cantilevered seat

50

and backrest frames, made of very strong, black, grey or white through-dyed plastic, produce stable, lightweight furnishing with a minimum of materials. In the same colour, the breathable cover adjusts to suit different body shapes, making sitting on the chair both relaxing and pleasant. The ingenious seat frame follows a principle of interlocking rails. This allows extremely compact, form-fit stacking of up to 15 chairs, or up to 25 when placed on the stacking trolley. This classy, skid-base chair is available with and without armrests and has more fascinating features to offer. The chair has optional, fold-out inline connections and a recess on the front of the seating frame, which makes handling the chair easier when you are stacking it.

Asienta. Exclusive design. Extreme comfort. Classy finish. The chair and sofa range blends a prestigious appeal with exceptional design and comfort that’s second to none. The stylish aluminium frame with curved cross sections and organic transition points form the characteristic contour around which cushioning of the cube-shaped seat body appears to envelop itself. The upholstery’s thin and flat on the outside, with a defined curve on the inside. It looks soft, but is firm and offers comfortable support for different seating positions. With their classy covers, the cubes look as if they’re wrapped in one piece of fabric. They form an exciting interpretation of traditional shapes, combined with clear precision and a relaxed appeal. The extremely tough, four-legged structure makes large spans possible. The range offers stand-alone chairs that are very compact or in normal widths, as well as two- and three-seater sofas and upholstered benches. There is a choice of high-quality textiles and exclusive leather for the covers. The low tables have been designed to match. Velas. Informal and classy. Minimalist and appealing. Comfortable and innovative. Informal chats or trust-building exercises to discuss ideas or opinions are vital to a company’s communications and knowledge network. With its distinctive, informal shape, the Velas lounge range interprets the principle of traditional steel tube furniture to the suit the needs of an office world where work and day-to-day needs are increasingly merging. The fluid transition of front legs, side sections and rear horizontal brace, create an especially informal, but high-quality look. The seemingly sus-

The slender, lined cushion shell made of high-performance fabric in one piece u sing 3D knitting technology and different levels of elasticity are incorporated. The intelligent cover alone provides support at its very best. The Velas chairs are complemented by footstools with robust butt leather cover and round, three-legged low tables. Cura. Informal. Classical. Spacious. Linear and stylish, traditional and distinctive, spacious and informal – the Cura cantilever chair is a real eye-catcher. The slim shape of the upholstery and the special frame make Cura stand apart. A beautifully formed flat steel harness supports the unitary seat which is interpreted as an architectural body all of its own. The upholstery appears structureless, yet is internally sprung, fully padded and covered with impeccable quality wool textiles or leather. As a result, the upholstery is reduced to the max, but offers reassuringly consistent comfort. If more flexibility is required, the Cura model without armrests is the right option. The upholstery is placed on a centre pedestal and the foot section is made of die-cast aluminium. The footstool on a similar base can be sat upon also. The clearly defined shape is achieved with an upholstered, fully covered plywood shell. Cura is refreshingly different and blends in effortlessly with the architecture in lobbies, lounges or at home. Timetable. Transportable. Space-saving. Fascinating. Intellectual and aesthetical quality combined produces fascinating solutions that can quickly pay for themselves. Designer Andreas Störiko created Timetable and added a new dimension to the design concept of high-quality training and conference areas. In just one simple step, the tabletop can be tipped up and the foot section with lockable castors turned inwards fully automatically at the same time. As a result, the tables are easy to move from room to room and extremely compact to stack. Their intuitive handling, high quality and smart appeal are ideal for busy conference areas and save both space and time. After all, furnishing costs are often just a fraction of the expenses for space rental and facility management costs. Timetable Smart with its durable table top, ease of use and wider frame is ideal for multi-purpose areas like meeting rooms or project offices.

Timetable Shift. Scaleable. Multi-purpose. Ingeniously combinable.

Timetable

Timetable Shift combines Timetable’s swivel-tabletop principle with the frame design of the established Logon conference table range (see page 68). The signature uprights are topped out by a high-precision aluminium casting. Its dual function provides a stable bearer for larger tabletop sizes and a shoe for a spacious cable channel for connecting the table and multi-media equipment to the power supply. Substantial hinges allow wide surfaces to be safely tilted and an easy-to-use draw rod locks the tabletop horizontally or vertically. In increments of five centimetres, formats of 150 to 210 centimetres in width and 75 to 105 centimetres in depth are available to suit customer preferences. The applications are therefore limitless, from temporary work spaces, to tables for meetings or as conferencing systems. And what’s more, Timetable Shift offers seamless solutions on demand by combining static Logon tables in suites that are sub- divided by folding partitions, extracting optimal performance from high-value communication-oriented space.

Logon. Slender material dimensions. Maximum stability. Modern elegance. Logon is an excellent choice for businesses that express open, informal and dynamic management techniques, where premium quality and enduring style is a necessity. Logon represents highquality, perfectly crafted design – whether as a single table or table system. The rounded timber edges with integrated impact-resilient profiles, slender uprights and the stylish die-cast aluminium foot sec-

68

tions lend the Logon programme a technically advanced look. The materials are lightened due to sophisticated tensile structures, similar to those used in the aircraft construction industry. The modular frame structure allows a virtually limitless variety of rectangular, elongated or compact types. Not just the fin ishes, formats and shapes, but the technical installations are also precisely made to fit. As stand-alone tables, linked table systems on height-adjustable glides, or mobile versions on castors, Logon ticks all the boxes. And what’s more, with the Confair folding table and Timetable Shift ranges, Andreas Störiko’s unmistakable style is evident in multi-purpose con ference and training rooms too. In the interests of seamless table solutions.

Concentra. Conversa. Flexible versatility. Fascinating modularity. Outstanding precision. Flexible offices are all about understated tables that allow you to work, hold meetings around, study at, have meals or spread out party fare on … Large and small, compact or long versions are required, or in other words all-rounders. Table ranges Concentra and Conversa have been developed to respond to these demands. With its round table legs and curved corners, one suits a variety of different design concepts. With its square table legs and narrow edges, the other is more suitable for backdrops where a more linear look is required. A modular system of corner angles, under frames, table-leg mounts and table legs lies at the heart of the design of the two ranges. The highly precise and extremely stable design with its recessed under frame and sophisticated joints become a design element. First-class materials combine the stylish cross sections with a high level of stability. Table formats measuring 75 x 75 to 200 x 100 cm, or also the particularly versatile format of 160 x 160 cm are possible. The result is a good-value desk for two, a table for a project group, or part of a conference system. Coated or bright chromium-plated frame surfaces, directly coated, laminated, or veneered wooden panels and glass with an opaque varnish made of single-pane toughened glass offer a wide range of design options. The tables might be used in offices for one, project or recreational rooms, for seminars and meetings, or even in prestigious conference facilities or executive offices. For distinctive, seamless table solutions.

Added power supply – cable risers and cable tracks can be attached at any time underneath the plywood tabletops. They can also be removed again if the table is needed for another purpose. As a standard, threaded bores have been applied to the underframes, so that more accessories can be fitted, such as modesty panels, or fold-out table-table-connectors. 73

Contas. Understated. Lightweight. Clever. The more accurately table layouts can match different delegate sizes and methods in conference and training rooms, the more efficient the events become. Options might include layouts in circular or horseshoe shapes, blocks or rows. Contas is a clever, high-quality, durable table system that is value oriented. This sophisticated range is exceptional for its understated optical 足 lightness and its combination of rigid or folding-leg tables and connecting leaves. Flexibility is its password.

76

The innovative, tool-free design, patented interlocking mechanism and the smart integration of all functions saves on time and man hours. To create table systems, the connector devices are simply rolled out at the corners, then the connecting leaves are applied and locked in. If required, modesty panels can be added, or single tables joined to one another with ease. As a result, functional and attractive conference solutions can be created and re-arranged to suit preferences, proving that practical versatility and impressive quality are not mutually exclusive!

Travis. Customised forms. Large spans. Perfect multi-media integration. Based on the Italian word “trave” (meaning bearer) the name already emphasises the advantage of producing spacious tables with just a few legs – with up to three metre spans at the same time. This creates an uncluttered look and allows flexibility in the number of seating places around the table. The floor is also easier to clean.

78

The modular frame is an articulating structure of columns, with round or T-shaped base, beams and tabletop bearers that can be freely positioned. Its frame is perfect for virtually any shape and format: open or closed, round, rectangular, oval, or barrelshaped. A wide range of tabletop surfaces and edges provide a wide range of design options. Last but not least, retractable cable channels, cut to size to match traverse lengths and linking angles, allow integration of cutting-edge multi-media equipment into the table systems. It also looks attractive and is easily to access. Even heavy equipment can be integrated directly into the frame.

Palette. Solid. Understated. Ingeniously versatile. Palette is that archetypal design that has at its roots the fundamental needs of man, the provision of a surface around which you can gather together to meet or eat. A construction principle proved down the ages: a solid-wood tabletop, resting on four column-shaped, table legs that are flush with the edge of the table top. In terms of function and aesthetic appeal, the

80

‘mortar line’ bonding, yet separating the legs from the top and the floor, are perfection itself. But Palette is very smart: in just one simple step the leg can be released and moved to accommodate another surface. As a result, you can add, re- arrange or divide tables to suit the interiors, events or number of guests concerned. The light yet rigid tabletops are totally frameless. This creates more legroom and allows space-saving storage of any tabletops not currently needed. And what’s more: in addition to mass-produced tabletops, the ingenious design allows customised ones too – including integration of modern multi-media equipment.

From a system table to a tailor-made table configuration with everything you need for your equipment: from cable outlets to extendable plug-and-play slots, or perfectly integrated single table portals to electrically retractable flat screens.

The stylish and transparent look and feel of Aline is ideal for informal areas used for professional purposes: sales rooms, customer-support and waiting areas, bistros and cafeterias, or desks and dining rooms at home. Thanks to the anti-bacterial fabric of the seating and the easy-care, robust table tops, Aline is an excellent choice for spas and healthcare areas. Whatever the setting, the furniture lends the room a light and informal appeal that encourages an informal chat. It is both attractive and comfortable with sophisticated functions at the same time. 84

Sustainable building for tomorrow’s world. Wilkhahn constantly liaises closely with architects to tread new paths in creating its own working environment as well. In 1988, unique, tent-like manufacturing pavilions, based on the architect Frei Otto’s designs, went into operation. After environmental responsibility was declared a corporate goal on an equal footing

88

with other aspects of the business in 1989, architect Thomas Herzog’s manufacturing facilities were completed in 1992. The buildings are of timber construction with green roofs and use daylight and innovative solar technology. In construction history, they’re considered exemplary. Today environmental responsibility has progressed to include compliance with environmental management system EMAS, an eco-driven design concept, environmentally friendly production procedures and a drastic cut in CO2 emissions due to alternative energy technology.
