Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos. The Northern Sporades that form part of the insular Magnesia. Three islands that complement each other, where thousands of tourists flock to each year, arriving from every corner of the planet. The lush green forests rival the infinite blue of the Aegean and crown wondrous beaches, places for unforgettable holidays. Lying a few nautical miles from Volos, the three islands are a dream come true, equipped with all that a visitor could wish for.
Accessed easily by sea and air (via the Skiathos airport), the Northern Sporades will always be the holiday destination of choice. Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos are proof that the "gap" between cosmopolitan vacations and an ecological paradise is very small and can be bridged with two words: Northern Sporades.

Bourtzi
3
1
Formerly a fortress, Bourtzi is a small peninsula that splits the port of Skiathos in two. The fortress was built by the Ghisi brothers who occupied Skiathos in 1207. It was enclosed with battlements and embrasures, with two round towers on each side of the gate. However, the ruins surviving today do not reveal the original height of the wall. The Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Skiathos is found at Bourtzi, where cultural events are held throughout the year, and particularly in summer under the title A Dream on the Waves.
The Home of A. Papadiamantis
2
The house in which the famous Greek writer Alexandros Papadiamantis was born on 4 March 1851 does not exist today. It was sold and its owners tore it down. Papadiamantis grew up and died in the new house built by his father in 1860, as inscribed on the walled-in tablet. The house is approximately 100 metres from the town's east coast. Inside the house, the winter room with its fireplace is where the great tenant spent his final years.
Kastro
3
In the most northern part of the island, below the old medieval city of Skiathos, named Kastro, lies its beautiful namesake, Kastro Beach. A swim in its clear waters combined with a visit to the old city of Kastro are a must for any visitor to the island. The medieval city was inhabited by the islanders for over 500 years. The inhabitants returned to the new town after the Treaty of London in 1829, when Skiathos was liberated from the Turks and fell under Greek rule.

Moni Kechrias
1
An important monastery on the island, the Moni Kechrias is the home of the renowned vessels which are kept in the monastery's katholikon (central church). These ceramic vessels were made in workshops in Italy and Asia Minor and were placed on the dome and walls above the windows. Exquisite murals dating back to the 16th and 17th century survive in the church's interior, together with an expertly crafted iconostasis.
18
Christos sto Kastro
2
The Church of Christ at Kastro, known as Christos sto Kastro, was the diocese of the medieval city. It is a large, wooden-roofed basilica that dates back to the 17th century. The church has notable murals depicting saints and a wooden, fretted icon screen dating back to 1695. It is the church that Alexandros Papadiamantis praised in his Christmas stories.

Evangelistria
3
Cloaked in green, the coenobitic monastery which celebrates the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and is known as the Moni Evangelistrias or Vangelistras as the inhabitants of Skiathos call it, is found near the source of the Lechouni stream at the site of Agalianos, below the Karaflytzanaka, the highest peak of Skiathos. The Moni Evangelistrias provided significant support, both moral and material, to the pre-independence movements as well as to the 1821 War of Independence. It is here that the first Hellenic flag with a white cross on a blue background was designed, woven, blessed and hoisted in 1807.
Trion Ierarchon
4
The Trion Ierarchon Church is the diocese of the island. It is a three-aisled basilica which was built in 1846 at the centre of the town of Skiathos, near the coast. The miracle icon of the Virgin Mary discovered circa 1650, known as the Icon of the Panaghia Eikonistria, is found in this church.

streets, every now and then interrupted by stairs and landings. Enormous bougainvillaeas cling to balconies and freshly-whitewashed walls that enclose tiny yards. The austere dark brown doors and windows of the past have gradually given way to livelier colours. Even though the traditional shades of brown ranging from beige to dark brown are still to be found, the islanders now dare to paint their homes' doors and windows green, skyblue and royal blue. Even red is seen to brighten a door here and there, perhaps a balcony a bit further on.

Glossa - Loutraki
1
Glossa, built on the mountain slope 250 metres above the sea, is the second largest village on the island of Skopelos. It is enveloped in pine forests and fruit trees and traversed by gullies with platan trees, in fact so many platan trees that its former name was Platania. Loutraki, the seaport of Glossa, is the island's second port. It is here that remnants of Roman baths and the acropolis walls of ancient Selinounda (4th century BC) were discovered and this is also the site of the temple of Athena (5th century BC).
24
Palio (Old) Klima
2
Klima is one of the picturesque villages of the island of Skopelos. The various changes made to the village did not affect its general image. It is found near Glossa, on the south-western side of the island and looks out on Skiathos and Northern Euboea (Evia) on the horizon. Up until the early 1950s the village was divided into two neighbourhoods, formerly called mahalades, the Epano (Upper) Klima and the Kato (Lower) Klima. The lower village, called kato chorio by its inhabitants, is older than the upper village. There is evidence that it was founded in the 18th century by the inhabitants of Glossa.

A few kilometres from Skopelos, in a south-westerly direction, lies the monastery known as Moni Agiou Riginou, which was built in 1728. The initial monastery was built in the Byzantine period as indicated by the church's architectural elements. The katholikon (central church) was a one-aisled, tile-roofed basilica which was torn down in order for the large cruciform church to be built. The cellae (cells), now in ruins, are found in the southwestern corner of the monastery. In the west lies the grave of Bishop Riginos of Skopelos, who died for his faith in 363 AD. The grave is a stone sarcophagus that dates back to the 4th century AD.

Aghia Barbara
2
Resembling a fortress, Aghia Barbara is found near the convent known as Moni Timiou Prodromou. Unlike the latter, which is inhabited by nuns, Aghia Barbara remains uninhabited. The katholikon (central church) and the towering walls surrounding the premises have been preserved in their initial form, yet the cellae (cells) were rebuilt later on. The fretted, gold-plated, wooden iconostasis adorning the monastery is very old.
Moni Evangelistrias
3, 4
Built high up on a mountain (known as Palouki) in the eastern section of Skopelos, the monastery dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, known as the Moni Evangelismou tis Theotokou, has an exceptional view of Skopelos. In his verses, the Skopelite scholar and monk Caesarius Daponte described it as the island's mainstay. The fretted wooden iconostasis of the katholikon is also interesting to see. A patriarchal signet dating back to 1804 together with two lead seals of the monastery are kept and safeguarded at the monastery. There is also a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors on the premises.

Aghii Anargyri
3
The monastery known as Aghii Anargyri is found in the north-western part of Alonnisos. Visitors will be impressed by the motifs of plants on the church dome. Remnants of buildings belonging to the monastery can be found in the area surrounding the church.
Kyra Panaghia
4
On the south-eastern side of the island of Kyra Panaghia lies the homonymous monastery, built in 1100 AD and a dependency of the Athonite monastery known as Moni Megistis Lavras. Austere yet impressive, the monastery's buildings were renovated in 1992. The old oil press and flour mill are still in excellent condition.

Folklore Museum
1
The Folklore Museum of Alonnisos, which belongs to Kostas and Angeliki Mavrikis, opened its doors in 2000 and is housed in a twostorey stone building situated on the left side of the port. The exhibits include artefacts from the history and tradition of the island, enabling visitors to learn about the life led by the island's inhabitants in the past.

Academy of Homeopathy
2
The International Academy of Classical Homeopathy, which was founded by George Vithoulkas in 1995, is based in Alonnisos. It is housed in a specially designed, traditional building in Aghios Andreas, a short distance from Patitiri.
Traditional Weddings 3 The vast majority of the inhabitants of Alonnisos continue to have traditional weddings, where all the villagers are invited. The traditional wedding dish of boiled goat in tomato sauce and macaroni is served at the wedding celebration held in the evening.

Inhabitants' Occupations
6
Quite a number of families live off fishing. The fishermen of Alonnisos have set an example for the rest of Greece by organising themselves and forming a co-operative by means of which they themselves distribute the fish they catch.
7
Women's Co-operative
7
The women of the Alonnisos co-operative prepare traditional confectionery, cheese pies or tyropitta and vegetable pies, while tuna in oil is a speciality of theirs.

Psathoura - beach
1, 2
Psathoura resembles a saucer on the water surface. It is the only volcanic island in the northern Sporades. The island is covered in brushwood, while in the south there is a small cove with beach sand, where the boats anchor. There are certain contradictory theories on the existence of a sunken city before Psathoura, at a depth of approximately 20 metres, which has however not been sufficiently explored. There is an islet in front of Psathoura known as Psathonisi or Psathouropoula. Islets such as this are very dangerous for ships due to the strong currents formed and for this reason Psathoura has an imposing lighthouse on its northern end.
Peristera
3
A small, uninhabited island very close to the east coast of Alonnisos, chiefly covered in shrubby vegetation and brushwood, for a few goats to graze. Despite its small size, Peristera also has beaches, so once a traveller has exhausted the beach of Alonnisos, all he has to do is take a boat ride to Peristera to enjoy a quiet swim.
Mediterranean Seal
4
The need to protect one of the last remaining habitats of the Mediterranean seal (monachus monachus) led to the creation of the National Marine Park of Alonnisos in the Northern Sporades. The Mediterranean seal is a protected species in the Park and is just one of the 12 most endangered mammals on the planet.

Yioura
1
The little island of Yioura is a large grey rock that emerges from the deep blue waters of the Northern Sporades. The island is renowned for the Cyclops's cave. According to mythology, this was the home of the cyclops Polyphemus, who was blinded by Odysseus. One can disembark at a small bay located south-west.

Rare birds
3
2
Eleonora's Falcon is one of the most well-known bird species encountered by visitors at the Erimonisa. The sight of a flock of thirty or so falcons is not so rare as these birds usually hunt together, in groups. The rarest of birds of prey is Bonelli's Eagle, which still nests on the craggy coasts of the northern Sporades.
Kyra Panaghia
3
This is the largest of the Erimonisa and is owned by the Athonite monastery known as Moni Aghias Lavras. Kyra Panaghia has two large natural bays, Aghios Petros in the west and Planitis in the east. Ormos Planitis is one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean.
Dolphin Species
4
Dolphins have a preference for the waters around the Northern Sporades. The species most often encountered are the striped dolphins, which romp about in the waves left behind by ships. Bottlenose dolphins or the common dolphin are encountered less often.

Diving
Rowing
Tourism in the Northern Sporades is environmentfriendly and provides opportunities for vacations with a difference during all four seasons of the year. Diving, sailing, rowing, touring and hiking along trails that traverse verdant slopes and end up in the aquamarine waters of the
Aegean are just a few of the options available to visitors to the three islands interested in alternative tourism. The National Marine Park, an oasis with virgin nature enticing you to embark on captivating explorations, is also found here, in the Sporades.
