recent addition has been made to the VMT teaching staff. Guillermo Farias, new World Geography instructor, is teaching for the first time in his new career. His classes mainly consist of freshmen. Farias not only teaches the subject, but works to get students connect geography to real life. “I’m not interested in teaching the subject, but mainly to get the student to tie in geography into real life experiences; it’s a challenge,” Farias said. “There are so many ways to tie in geography with every day life, both physically and

ew teachers have been arriving at VMT while others have left. One of them is Gerardo Flores, English teacher who is replacing Elsa Reyna. Reyna was promoted to secondary reading instructional coordinator. Flores chose VMT for many reasons, but mostly to work with high school students. “VMT is something new for me because of the concept of being able to explore,” Flores said. Flores explained his perspective of the students here at magnet. “The students are very talented. They seem to be very involved in their classes.

The Laredo Independent School District is reimplementing a security measure for students and personnel. The process has already started. The security measure is reinstituting a login for Internet access from school district computers. Some students have violated the district’s rules for technology usage and also Internet usage, a technology trainer said. Until three years ago in LISD, students, teachers, and staff had to use a login before accessing the Internet. The new login system will be similar to the old one. The old system was discontinued to facilitate direct access to the Internet, but on the other hand it facilitated things for people who wanted to misuse it. According to VMT Technology Trainer Scott Roberts, the user and password login will help the district keep track of user behavior, and of visiting inappropriate sites. “It is unfortunate to use this system because students and staff might get the feeling of distrust, but this is an educational environment and student security comes first.” Roberts said. “Most of the problems are created by
middle and high school students.” He gave as examples going to inappropriate sites with the Internet. He added elementary school students should not be going to such sites, either. The district will now know who is accessing music and entertainment sites, for example. “With these new security measures, teachers will be relieved of the responsibility of checking on students to make sure they are using the Internet appropriately,” Roberts said. Eric Chavez, also a sophomore at Nixon High School, thinks the new security measure is a good idea because now elementary school children are going to be supervised and protected by the district, and older students are not going to be able to go to inappropriate sites. “I hope students will be more involved in education, not in Web sites they are not supposed to go into,” Chavez said. Claudia Vasquez, also a sophomore at Cigarroa High School, thinks having a password in order to use the Internet is a good idea. “Since many students misuse or mistreat the privilege of using the Internet,” Vasquez said, “it is important they all own a password so that they learn a lesson and treat the privileges they get right.”
