Clubs collect gifts for Casa de Misericordia BY LUCIA VILLAGOMEZ MT STAFF WRITER
pages 6-7 Martin graduate returns as coach
Tears filled the eyes of seniors and teachers as they donated gifts to the less fortunate at Casa de Misericordia on Dec. 19. Alyssa Garza, Monica Garcia, Lorie Zamarripa, Joey Hernandez, Ashley Reilly and Lucia Villagomez, all members of both Quinta Essentia Club
and the Senior Class, were the ones chosen to present 90 gifts to Sister Rosemary Welsh. The teachers who accompanied the students were Senior Class co-sponsor Diana Martinez, and Quinta Essentia Club sponsor Gerardo Flores. While presenting the gifts several students felt moved by the emotional stories that were told by Sister Rosemary Welsh. Students were moved by the
gift-giving. “Just knowing that we were there making a difference was awesome,” said Garza. The Senior Class and the Quinta Essentia club asked all VMT students to donate as many gifts as they could. Since both clubs were informed Casa de Misericordia seems to receive fewer gift donations for teenagers, they decided to focus on gifts for
ages 13-18. Students were given community service hours, depending on the price for every gift they donated. Several faculty and staff also donated gifts. The clubs also offered free gift-wrapping and bows. According to its Web site, Casa de Misericordia, was established in 1998. It is a domestic violence shelter See GIFTS, page 2 MT photo by Kimberly Evans
