Kate van Suddese’s exhibition: “For those in Peril of the Sea” became one of our most successful shows ever. As part of the Northern Print’s biennale event Print City, The Biscuit Factory presented ‘Printed’, showcasing seven very individual artists using a diverse range of printing techniques. MA Glass MA Glass & MA Ceramics from the University of Sunderland. The Biscuit Factory housed this popular end of year exhibition for the sixth time. The Gallery at the Theatre Royal is now up and running, offering a unique selection of limited edition prints by local artists.

New manager After 7 years with The Biscuit Factory of which 2 years as gallery manager, Paul Roberts is leaving the North East. We wish Paul and his future wife lots of luck and every success for the future. Carolyn Buck, a well-known face at The Biscuit Factory will take over as gallery manager in October.

Emma Simcock-tooth Concilium plebis Emma Simcock-Tooth is a hyper-realist often side lined as “chavs” and Simcock- Tooth mimics Caravaggio’s portrait painter based in Derbyshire, England. Though she undertook her academic training at Loughborough University, she is by and large selftaught. Emma Tooth’s Concilium Plebis collection (translated as a Council of the Ordinary People) comprises a series of portraits which present people who are
“hoodies” in traditional religious poses. A single mother and her child resemble the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus; a hooded youth looks up to the sky in saintly contemplation; and a bare-chested young man holds his arms outstretched as if nailed to the cross. In each of the portraits, Emma
trademark use of chiaroscuro (contrasting light and dark), giving her subjects a celestial glow that adds to the aura of divinity. Although it might initially appear as if Tooth is mocking her subjects, using members of the public as models for Biblical scenes is exactly what Caravaggio did 400 years ago. 4

Joanne symonds After graduating in 2006 from Northumbria University Joanne Symonds shifted her efforts from studying the history of art to creating her own. Joanne’s work is defined by subjects close to her own passions and experiences with the hope of expressing 5
them to the viewer. Joanne loves to depict the human figure in his environment and capture the essence of a particular place, time and space that embodies such atmosphere and generates experience.

HowardBirchmore Howard Birchmore has been a professional artist for 8 years and previously he worked in a design partnership and media and public relations. A modern look at a traditional vision describes Howard’s work. Time spent in the West Country and abroad has provided variety and depth to his
paintings with Italy and particularly Venice being especially inspirational. Howard Birchmore’s work records intense colour, light and shade. The romance and drama of the Mediterranean has resulted in some of his most evocative pictures. His paintings have been purchased for private collections throughout the world
and have been selected for exhibition by the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Guild of Aviation Artists. Howard at present is using acrylics although his distinctive style is nearer to water colour, he undertakes commissions and is happy to discuss your requirements. 6

Kevin hope Originally from Newcastle, Kevin Hope now lives and works in London. It was during his degree at Bristol University that Kevin discovered steel as his medium. ‘I had to leave the shadow

Sarah webb Sarah Webb has lived and worked as a professional artist for the past 27 years. Supported by her patron, Eric Hall (1928 - 2008) Sarah travelled to Southern Spain and Madrid,
where she spent seven years integrating with the Spanish culture, and mixing with other international artists, also spending time in Italy.
Sarah is an accomplished portrait painter and twice finalist in the BP and John Player awards at the National Gallery. 10

Raised in Hong Kong and now living in the UK, Suzanne Chong’s art responds to Eastern and Western morals and the complexities theses bring to female identity. Suzanne’s work reflects her own experience of growing up during
a time in which Hong Kong prospered greatly, Western lifestyle rapidly invaded Chinese traditions, and new values quickly started to erode the old. Chinese symbolism and western classical style
are blended together to make her own coded autobiography, which explores a struggle between traditional propriety and the liberation of women from Hong Kong.

Andrew Hall turned his first bowl aged 14 and has been developing his skill in wood turning ever since. These elegant ornamental forms reflect Hall’s great understanding of his medium.
Charlie’s work expresses the simplicity, harmony and balance experienced in the Japanese architectural aesthetic. He explores the qualities of glass as a material, using components and cane inclusions to change the pieces as the spectator moves around the work. He designs and makes one-off work for interiors and galleries across Europe. All the work is hand blown by Charlie, manipulated in its molten form before being taken through six stages of polishing.
Bruno Babieri creates his fascinating bronze statues from his studio in the French Alps. The bodies rise up from their wombs of wood, clay and bronze in a sensual rhapsody. One feels their flowing forms the natural reverie that comes from the movement of the sculptor. The mark of the soul is there, stripped bare, supported, reaching toward limitless horizons.

Pronounced (svi-ya). Svaja is the name used by a constantly changing collective of glass artists working in a similar style, and feeding from each others fresh ideas. The work produced by these artists is typically chunky, bold, heavy, modern and unashamedly funky. Svaja, takes its name from the founder Kristina Svajone Bobs, for her name in native Lithuania, means ‘dream’. Kristina’s dream was that of creating and developing collections of useable, beautiful art in whatever medium.
Mark Dally (M.A), who is a Designer/Maker, has a tableware range which is known as Black and White Ware. His work is a bold, contemporary take on traditional Staffordshire slipware. Other design influences include 1950’s surface pattern such as Ridgeway’s ‘Homemaker,’ and the motifs and calligraphic styles of pre-Hispanic Mexican and Australian Aboriginal art.
Amongst Christine’s inspirations are themes of landscape, borders and containment, exploring the boundaries between past and present, light and dark, land and sky, and the marks left by mankind. She is also interested in the expression and heritage of the vessel form itself.

Martin Whitby’s current work evolves towards an escape from the circular constraints of lathe-turning. In particular, Whitby experiments with split – turning, multi-axis and multi-centre turning techniques.
Desiree Hope designs and makes unusual glassware, creating both one off sculptural pieces and repeatable work that is exhibited internationally.
Janet makes “trompe l’oeil” sculptural pieces and hand-built vessels in stoneware. The vessels, chiefly jugs, mugs and teapots have evolved from the sculptural work and usually feature fastenings such as buttons, laces or latches. Janet uses a range of stoneware glazes and low-fired metal lustres to achieve a realistic effect. The humour and skill apparent in Janet’s keenly observed work has made her still life sculptures widely collectable across the UK.

Fossil hunting along the North Yorkshire coast is a source of inspiration, and she is intrigued by the scientific investigation of nature. Microscopy exposes a whole new world, and the repetitive and intricate patterns that are revealed influence her engraved pieces.

Julia manning Julia’s work is all about the natural world, it has been described as ‘Nature with Attitude (which she rather likes). Inspiration comes from her garden and the birds in it, her early morning walks with her dog Pearl, Keinton and her trips to India and wild places. 25 25

helios vii: 16th october-22nd november preview 15th october  The Helios exhibition returns to The Biscuit Factory for the seventh consecutive year, exhibiting work from recent graduates of universities and colleges in the Northern region. This annual exhibition showcases the finest talent from new and emerging artists in photography from the Helios group of institutions: University of Sunderland,
Northumbria University, University of Newcastle, Cumbria University, Cleveland University and Newcastle College. Over the last seven years over 200 artists have exhibited in this series of exhibitions receiving high critical acclaim in what has become one of the most important annual photographic exhibitions in the region.
This year sees the standard being raised ever higher, with over 30 graduates displaying work ranging from documentary to fine art photography, from architecture to portraiture, and landscape to constructed imagery. 26

Steve hedley

Steve is a native of Tyneside who is old enough to have seen the decline of the area’s traditional heavy industry and the regions regeneration. The link between the old and new is reflected in much of Steve’s work. Subjects featured in his
photographs include the Swan Hunter’s dock yard and the Sage music centre seen over old chimney pots. Many of Steve’s photographs are of the familiar landmarks of Newcastle but taken from often surprising view points.
Steve prefers working in black and white believing it to lend a greater emphasis to form and to the images’ composition. He uses a Bronica S2A camera with black and white film. The images are digitally printed

Dan prince Following his very successful ¡VAMOS! Weekender exhibition, (established) North east photographer Dan Prince returns to The Biscuit Factory with his stunning series of Tango inspired
photographs. Dan’s images of tango dancers in unusual and dramatic landscapes across the north east are sultry, atmospheric and passionate. Each image is carefully constructed with
strikingly dramatic lighting and a strong use of colour. His work is printed to a very high quality and is presented laminated and framed in a limited edition of only 30.

The Biscuit Factory is very excited to introduce a selection of photographs by Lara Jade. Lara’s fashion photography has been critically acclaimed. Her work has featured in top art and photography magazines including Photography Monthly, Practical
Photography, Digital Camera Magazine and Aesthetica and has featured in online magazines Dejour, Republicca and Clickmagz. Lara has worked for numerous high profile clients ranging from Kokkino jewellery to the BBC and her work has been exhibited in both
London and Paris. Originally from the North East Lara has recently relocated to London and has also signed to Sudest57 agency in Milan. At only 20 years old Lara has been described as a bright new talent and one to watch.

selection of artists was not finalised however we are proud to give you a sneak preview of works by Graduates from Duncan of Jordanstone Art College; Ebba Redman and Gemma Valentine. Ebba Redman’s unique work includes the ‘My Home is Where the Heart Is’ collection which brings together domestic craft skills that have been handed down from generation to generation, and modern jewellery techniques such as
electroforming. The handmade crotchet and lace have been transformed into silver using contemporary techniques making the works durable and unique. Gemma Valentine is an illustrator influenced by 1950s lifestyle and infrastructure; a time when a slower pace of life was the norm and more neighbourly attitudes were prevalent. These themes are important to Gemma as they contrast with today’s hectic materialistic world. 30

Our Gallery at the Theatre Royal is now up and running. Alongside prints of the original architectural drawings, the gallery offers limited edition giclee prints by 6 of our most valued artists each presenting their take on this Newcastle landmark. In September work by other celebrated local artists will join this collection.
The Charity Art Auction of the year is back!!! On October the 8th The Biscuit Factory will host the annual Lifespan Art Auction for the third time. The amazing team from Lifespan and a generous group of artists have once again gathered an impressive collection of Experiences and Art Works which will be auctioned off on the night for this good cause.
Lifespan is a local charity which provides a range of services to bring ease and support to people with serious and life-threatening illness and to their family members and friends who care for them. Lifespan’ care and support is provided

It means the artwork has been purchased by one of our customers, but we would like to exhibit it a little while longer. It means the item is on reserve for a customer for a limited period of time.
how do I buy something?
Ask at the main desk for help, you can usually take the artwork away with you. You can also reserve items free of charge while you think about it. (There is a 2 day holding policy).
how can I pay?
By using all major credit and debit cards, cash ,cheque with a cheque guarantee card, gift vouchers or by using the Own Art Scheme.
What is Own Art?
It is a 10 month interest free payment plan. It is easy to set up, you need is proof of identity which can be a bank or credit card, proof of address (utility bill, driving license–NOT passport) and the bank account details for the monthly direct debit.

Can I hold events here?
Yes, the gallery is a very flexible space; we can cater for most needs. We can also hire out the café and glass house for events. Speak to our Events Manager for advice and quotes. Mail to: events@thebiscuitfactory.com Yes, café Byker Vista with its roof terrace and views over the Ouseburn Valley and the Byker Wall offers casual lunches, delicious cakes and relaxed evening drinks, and we also have the Brasserie Black Door for more formal dining.
Are you fully accessible?
Yes, we have a lift within the Black Door Brasserie which takes you up to the first floor, as well as to the studio levels. Studios are only open to the public on Open Studio Weekends. There is a ramp leading from the car park into the restaurant.
how to get here from the town centre? The Biscuit Factory Gallery is 10 minutes walk from the Millennium Bridge and the Quayside. Bus services 2 and 16 come along Stoddart St, and there are numerous services that stop on New Bridge St, less than 2 minutes walk from the Biscuit Factory. These include bus numbers: 12, 39, 40, 62 and 63 which can be caught near Monument in the city centre. The nearest Metro Station is Manors.
