Fresh In November The Biscuit Factory celebrated its 4th Birthday. In 2006, the gallery was the setting for many popular exhibitions by some of our most successful local artists; Lizzie Rowe is going from strength to strength and is now preparing for a London show this March; Anthony Marshall’s exhibition was very well received and Dave Barden’s Jazz @ The Biscuit proved to be very popular with our customers. Artists Anja Percival, Emma Holliday and Jenny Holm have now become well

established and are reguarly exhibited at The Biscuit Factory. In addition to this, we celebrated our own in-house talent through the work of Francesca Hudson, Karen Tait and Lisa Corken. Last year also saw a big rise in the sale of our 3D art and jewellery, with the successful introduction of many new pieces such as Rosamonde Ingram’s quirky ceramic fish and contemporary jewellery from Peace of Mind. The graduate shows featuring MA Glass at Sunderland and Helios, photography from all higher education institutions in the North-East,

brought a whole new generation of artists to the foreground. The Biscuit Factory held exhibition stands at both the Edinburgh Art Fair and the Affordable Art Fair in London, introducing and promoting many of our artists to areas outside our region. The Open Studio Events proved to be very popular and will continue in 2007. We now have a buzzing community of artists in the studios downstairs working in many different disciplines including graphic design, stained glass, painting and many more.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2006

JAMES EDWARDS

JAMES EDWARDS | Newcastle 2 | Oil

James began his career exhibiting on a small stall on the Armstrong Bridge in Jesmond, where Ramy Zack, the owner of The Biscuit Factory discovered him and began to exhibit his paintings. Since then his work has sold extraordinarily well and has become widely collectable. James is best known for his depictions of iconic buildings and bridges in the North East. His paintings range from detailed city scenes of raised perspectives and bright colours to newer work of bold outlines and dominant abstracted forms. Both follow a theme of architecturally inspired structures. His paintings are not studies from life, but have their origins in memory, how he remembers the workings and the landmarks of a city. Through a combination of imagination and selective memory, perspectives and composition are altered and exaggerated. James’s paintings are influenced by his background in graphic design; they are highly coloured and finely finished, with a comical undertone. His abstract paintings portray the intrinsic graphic quality of his landscapes and are reminiscent of the cubist movement. A selection of James Edwards’ prints are also available at The Biscuit Factory. JAMES EDWARDS | Grid 1

KEITH MCMURRAY | Angel + Ash | £1300 | 112X56 MARIA TRIBE | Thailand memory | £1500 | 80X80

KEITH MCMURRAY & MARIA TRIBE Introduction As mentioned in the previous edition of FRESH, The Biscuit Factory recently introduced an exciting group of young artists based in Brighton namely Dan Bennett and Henrik Simonsen. Here, we take the opportunity to portray the paintings of Keith McMurray and Maria Tribe, also from the Brighton studio group. Keith McMurray Originally from London, Keith has lived in Brighton for several years.Since graduating from Canterbury

in 1996, Keith has explored other professions alongside painting and drawing including cabinet making, circus work and silk-screen printing. A desire to develop his art more seriously led him to pursue it full time. Keith’s work is concerned with depicting his local surroundings. He is interested in old hand-tinted photographs and his work draws on this. He often starts with a tonal pencil drawing which he then tints using thin layers of paint.

Maria Tribe Maria Tribe was born in Brighton and has been painting professionally since 1994. Her paintings are visual diaries based on journeys which range from long distance trips around the world, to walks in London and Brighton. When travelling, a large body of drawings, photographs and collected materials are gathered together to later be used in the studio. The paintings are an extension of the sketchbooks which are central to the work and are incorporated directly into the pieces using print and drawing techniques.

CHRISTINE SEITERLE | Coloured Windows

In his work Michael draws heavily from his own personal experiences, presenting his interpretation of the human condition; our environment, families, and the society we live in are all interlinked and interdependent. His figurative work is visually striking and full of movement, reflecting a passion and enthusiasm for life, with balance and co-operation as recurrent themes. Michael’s work lends itself to a large scale, hence he has been sought to undertake many private and public commissions. His work is regularly exhibited and sold both in the UK and internationally, and was featured at The Chelsea Flower Show, 2006.

A Michael Speller sculpture would make an impressive centre piece for any room or garden. Michael works in both cold-cast and foundry bronze. Cold-cast bronze is made from bronze suspended in resin, and strengthened with fiber-glass, whereas foundry bronze is hot poured, using traditional methods. Cold-cast bronze is suitable for both inside and outdoor locations and with care, will last a lifetime. Foundry bronze will last not only for a lifetime, but for generations to come.
