It’s been a long time coming, but the Magnolia team finally presents the first edition of Magnolia Magazine. Sitting at Analog Coffee by Fratello on 17th Ave and 7th street, I take an unlady-like bite out of my delectible almond croissant. It gets me thinking, “Is this a Manuel Lutruwe croissant?” Mmmm so good! Then my mind drifts to the cars and pedestrians outside. Outside is overcast and with a chance of rain. it’s Calgary - anything can happen. I brought a sweater just in case it snows. I watch as people pass by urgently walking to their next destination or liesurely stroll along in conversation with a friend or partner. Everyone has somewhere to go. A destination. Magnolia Magazine too, has a destination. Our journey starts now. Our Mission is to be your guide to upcoming trends in fashion, beauty, travel and lifestyle, a common topic of many publications; but we combine our curiousity and our need to be creative, innovative and resourceful. Our promise to bring you stories worth reading, editorials worth viewing (and sharing) and reviews worth leaving your comments. We’ll bring you behind the scenes looks on events where possible and honest with our sources.

M The romantically whimsical Spring/ Summer 2013 couture collection – 120 pieces strong – for the Mineira born Brazilian designer, Patricia Bonaldi, seems to be inspired by childhood nostalgia. Reminiscent of sugar sweet shades of cotton candy, this season’s colours are a mixed palette of carousel wonders of the Fair bathed in vintage light. Using luscious fabrics such as silk, tulle and duchesse in the cotton candy shades; add flamboyance to the elegant silhouettes while the sequins and crystals embellish the dresses allowing room for bold glamour.

M | Leo Boutique Retail Royalty

“Our service and selection separates us. Everyone who works at Leo is passionate about the brands we carry,”

Written by Tracey McCorquodale

Leo Boutique is a labor of love. It is a store that came to fruition through the combined efforts of a devoted husband and wife both passionate about fashion. When asked what makes them so successful at running the boutique, co-owner Cornelia Wiebe credits her partnership “My husband and I are a great team. We each have strengths in different areas. And of course, we LOVE what we do.” Cornelia and Jon Wiebe launched their own boutique in Calgary in 1997 as a vehicle for Jon to create and distribute his own designs. “My husband always had a love of fashion and a keen interest in fashion design. I had been sewing my own clothes since elementary school, and had worked in clothing retail for years. Recognizing the challenges of starting your own clothing label, my husband decided that by opening his own store, he could facilitate the creation and sale of his own line.” Neither Cornelia nor Jon had any experience running their own store, but true to the nature of their brave astrological signs (Leo the Lion), they took a leap of faith and the rest is history. Leo Boutique has now evolved to include two more stores in Winnipeg and Vancouver, along with a budding online store. “We are always drawn to a ‘neighbourhood’, not just a location” says Cornelia. That neighborhood in Calgary is located right off 17th Avenue and 8th Street, alongside some other upscale boutiques and pretty park scenery. What makes Leo stand out from those other upscale boutiques is the lines they carry and their attentive service. “Our service and selection separates us. Everyone who works at Leo is passionate about the brands we carry,” says Cornelia. Many of those brands include home-grown Canadian talent, such as Calgary-born and raised Caitlyn Power. “Whenever possible, we work with Canadian designers. Although it is not a requirement in our store, it is a bonus if we can work with our Canadian fashion leaders.” Some other Canadian brands Leo carries include Vancouver-based Arcteryx Veilance and Montreal-based Naked and Famous. What these brands all have in common, other than their Canadian roots, is their inventiveness and dedicated to high quality production. After 16 years of running their boutique in Calgary, Cornelia and Jon continue to focus on growth and strive for improvement in every aspect of their business. “We are constantly evolving in all areas. From our brand selection to our daily operations, we are always striving for better.” Cornelia and Jon are also looking to grow their online store into a more developed shop. It will take some time, but it is yet another challenge they are up for. +M

When oil is hot, lower heat to medium-low and sauté garlic and shallots until fragrant, about 1 minute. •Increase heat to medium again, add olives, and cook for 1 minute. •Add the diced tomatoes and cook until soft, about 1 to 2 minutes. •Add the wine and stir until the alcohol has evaporated, about 2 to 3 minutes. •Stir in tomato paste and butter until dissolved. •Put the pasta back in the pot and gently mix until each strand is coated in the sauce.
