The Big Tiny Coffee House

Page 1

The Big Tiny Coffee House Coffee is an important part of Scandinavian culture. In the early mornings the coffee houses are usually packed with people picking up their morning coffee on their way to work. And is it any wonder? Amidst the stress of congested traffic lanes, crammed busses, and not to mention the long dark winters, that first sip of coffee in the morning offers something invaluable. A moment of well needed calmness and clarity. Building upon the Scandinavian design tradition, focus lies on sustainable materials, good light conditions, and simplicity of form. Essentially, The Big Tiny Coffee House has a relatively traditional structure. Resting on a polygonally shaped wooden platform, four wooden beams joined together with eight wooden pillars form the tilted roof construction. Decreasing in size the row of beams and pillars gives the building a sense of forced perspective. In between the wooden components are sheets of tempered glass stabilizing the structure. Additionally, the glass elements supply a great amount of daylight and offer a sense of transparency. On the inside there is enough workspace for one barista. The L-shaped bench mirrors the angle of the platform and contains drawers and storage. The structure is relatively easy to assemble. The simplicity lies in its IKEA-like construction principle. There are four main components: The platform, the bench, the joined together pillars and beams, and the sheets of tempered glass. You basically place the platform, put in the workbench, attach the pillars and beams, and slide in the glass sheets. With its expressive form, clearly recognizable silhouette, sustainable materials and transparency, The Big Tiny Coffee House aims to add a sculptural quality to the public space. And hopefully, the characteristic design will in time also be associated with the same feeling of that first sip of coffee on a cold winter’s morning.
