EN L IG HT N E D B Y DARK N E SS The goal of this project is to focus on the values, atmospheres and functions already established on the island; support these, reinforce them. The project is a retelling and interpretation of Refshaleøens phenomenological events.
EVENTS Many interesting and unique things occour on the island; for instance, during the night, you won’t find comfort and safety in the brightly lit main road; it’s in the darkness that gives you sanctuary. Events such as standing on the isolated island, looking towards Copenhagen, it seems as if you look through space and time to
another world, cut off from reality. Acoustic events such as the silence on the island; it’s often complete, and strenghtens the feeling of walking through an postapocalyptic world. However, at times, Copenhagen reaches you with sounds from it’s many churches, and in a single moment you are united. The island’s barrierer is for a brief moment dissolved.
Teacher(s):
Christina Tholstrup,
Knud Kappel
PROBLEM FORMULATION The project aims to be a source of inspiration for the future development of the island. Based on this, the project seeks to answer the following question: “How is it ensured that the islands current uniqueness, atmosphere and values can be experienced in the future; even after the majority of the island has been demolished?”
PLACEMENT The primary reasoning for placing the building by the dock was the surrounding areas tendency to be completly blacked; it felt natural to place the building in the complete darkness.
8
EXPRESSION During the day the facade seems static, closed and repellent; slowly, as darkness falls upon the island, the light from within the building hits its transparent shell and vibrates as visitors walk past the window, turning it into a lightshow. The facade that seemed as an impenetrable barrierer, has then been degraded.

COURSE The primary entrypoint is through the transparent shell. Between the shell and the building, you find yourself in a limbo, sharpening your senses before entering the buidling. Once you do that, you’ll meet different lights and sensations, depicting the phenomenological events on the island. The first floor of the building is used to exhibit various installations. The last floor is administration and workshops.

EXHIBITION 1 & 2 The first permanent exhibition the visitor enter is based on the huge B&W hall located nearby, giving the visitor an idea of how magnificent and enormous the ships that where made were. The second permanent exhibition is the darkest of them all. In here there is no sense of height or direction; it’s the sound that’s in focus. Sounds from the harbour, the sea, a tankership and other relevant sounds is played from hidden speakers.
14
EXHIBITION 3 The final permanent exhibition is based on Refshaløens former time as a shipbuilder. This room will give the visitor a sense of how the island used to look and feel, statistics, generel information about the island etc.
15
INSPIRATION This program is about focusing on the values, the atmosphere and features already established on the island; substantiate and amplify them. Based on the registration made on the island, isolation, darkness, dimness, the strange, mystical was the primary events was what the program’s key words.

REGISTRATION Refshaleøen is a uniqe and complicated island. In order to better understand the island, phase one of the semester was to register the island in groups. Everything was put mapped; scale, infrastructure, the moveable, the coated, the green and so on.

PL AN NED DIF FUSION Using the tradition block structure as the main shapetool, this project works with transistion from the private and the public, a utopia, community, and creating a fracture in the established utopia/ structure.
UTOPIA Beyond using the physical lines and directions in the context, a generated utopia has played a huge factor in the creation of the projects main concept. In short, the utopia is about two different worlds - two contrasts - existing seperately, side by side, with no contact with each other.
FRACTURE This utopia can be read in the common block structure: two “worlds”, the common space and the private space has no real contact with each other. In the project, created from the very same utopia, breaks the barrierer and in this fracture, new undefined spatialities, transitions, events and meetings occurs.
Teacher(s):
Christina Tholstrup,
Arne Cemark
TRANSITION The area outside the block is common space. The area within the block is a transition from the semi-public (the fracture), to the complete private; the dwelling. The spread out buildings works as shops workshops, communal eating, storage etc.

Master plan 1:800
PROGRAM Within the block structure itself, the project consists of three spacial programs: The first program is shops, cafĂŠs, clubs, etc. and is located in the ground floor. The first floor is student housing. Floor two and three varies, and can be either family housing og student housing.
21
FACADE From the harbour the building is percived as closed, almost repellent, with it’s harsh facade and windows which juts sharply at the harbor. Conversely, in the courtyard, the facade consisting of wooden slats opens up and delivers the perception and sense of a coherent whole.

DWELLING
Section
The block is split up into modules; at floor two to four dwellingtypes varies. Neither dwelling size nor whom the homes are designed for is established; this is to create variered communities within the block; every module contains different communites; students, families, eldersw etc. Every floor calls on community.

A CA R PEN TRY WOR KSHOP The intension of this project was to base the concepts, materiality and atmosphere on the context, and create a balance in the context; the surrounding area feels very conflicted; it floats between being industry and dwelling, large
and small. Especially to the right from the site, buildings are placed with no sense of direction.
With it’s placement, the project seeks to be a link between the wierdly placed dwelling to the right, and the large industrial building to the left of the site. Additionally, in order to enhance the feel of industry and bring balance to the context, the project attemps to be a concentrate of the context; finding inspiration from materials, shapes, sizes and volumes

Developing an interesting concept, and basing the choice of materiality, light and placement on the context was high priority.

MATERIALITY In terms of materiality the project is heavliy inspired by the use of brick in the surrounding area. The facade is a simple brick facade. On the lower half of the facade, every second 3/4 brick is removed, creating unique shadows on the surface.

LIGHT The project consists of different kinds of light incidences. The swaths in the rooftops create a sharp light on the inner walls, whereas the pierced facades create soft diffuse lights.

REGISTRATION WORKSHOP The worhsop was held during my second semester. Based on my registration of the island Ven, a shelter was to be designed. My focus with the shelter was framing specific views that showcased the beauty of Ven.

VISUALIZATIONS A collection of some of my vizualizations iv’e made over the past three years. Sorted in no particular order.
VISUALIZATION WORKSHOP The worhsop was also held during my second semester. The goal was to design a shelter and visualize them in with 3DS Max.
