FERNDOWN PLAY PARK GETS NEW LEASE OF LIFE
As part of the £1.2 million project to refurbish the King George V recreational facilities in Ferndown, the Town Council has selected their preferred contractor to carry out the refurbishment to the play park. Following a tendering process, HAGS have been selected as the preferred contractor. HAGS have an excellent track record of developing quality, robust play areas. The Chairman of the KGV Management Committee, Cllr Mrs Julie Robinson commented, “The KGV Trustees are very excited about the much needed upgrade to this play park. Outdoor play is vital for children’s development and it is important the community has access to exciting and challenging play areas. I am pleased that the new play area will meet the needs of our young people and will certainly be used and enjoyed by generations to come.” Cllr Mike Parkes, the Chairman of the Project
Group overseeing the project added, “The Project Group was very impressed with the design put forward by HAGS. It has a fantastic selection of equipment which is suitable for a wide range of children with varying abilities. In developing the plans, the Town Council asked local school children what they would like to see in the park and the ideas and views from this have been incorporated into the final design.” The play park will include equipment for children up to 12 years old with zoning for toddlers and juniors for ease of flow. The new equipment includes inclusive swings and roundabouts, slides, play panels, 2 climbing frames for toddlers and juniors, a net pyramid plus many more exciting pieces of equipment. The play park has been closed to prepare for works to commence in January. It is anticipated that the park will be ready to enjoy before Easter 2020.

A GREAT SUCCESS FOR LOCAL HOMELESS CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX APPEAL
There has been an extraordinary response to 2019 years Christmas Shoebox Appeal in aid of local homeless people with nearly 300 boxes donated across Ferndown and Wimborne. The campaign was introduced by the late Cllr Steve Lugg three years ago and the appeal continues to be in his memory. The appeal was launched in October with the Mayors of Ferndown and Wimborne Minster joining forces in the campaign to encourage residents across the two towns and surrounding parishes to donate shoeboxes to drop off points - and what a response there’s been! As Christmas has approached the boxes have come in, in their droves – all beautifully wrapped and jam packed with necessary items such as toiletries, hats, gloves and sachets of drinks/soups as well as a few sweet treats thrown in to the mix. Many boxes included a Christmas card for the recipient to open on Christmas day. All boxes will be donated to Trova’s Help the Homeless Appeal and distributed locally. The Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Julie Robinson, commented, “When Steve Lugg helped to 4
introduce the campaign in 2016 his words were, “There is so much more good in the world than bad, and we need to celebrate it”. The response to this year’s appeal is testament to Steve’s words and he would be proud. Each box donated will go a long way in spreading a little joy to a homeless person’s Christmas. I’d like to thank every person and organisation who has donated to the appeal, all those local shops and organisation who have agreed to be drop-off points for boxes, and Meridian Air Conditioning for co-ordinating the drop-off points.” Cllr Shane Bartlett, the Mayor of Wimborne Minster added, “I supported the late Steve Lugg who initiated this project locally and he would have been overwhelmed with the support and generosity it has received from the public as am I. I would like to extend my thanks to the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Julie Robinson for extending the appeal to Wimborne Minster and surrounding areas therefore allowing myself to be a part of this worthwhile cause, bringing some benefit and festive cheer to those less fortunate.” Photo courtesy of Tom Scrase.

Plastic Free status for Ferndown: achieved! Plastic Free Ferndown has been awarded plastic-free status The town received ‘Plastic Free Communities’ Status last September. It was awarded by marine conservation charity, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), in recognition of the work it has done to help reduce the impact of single-use plastic (SUP) on the environment. Supported by the Town Council, Ferndown has joined over 600 communities across the UK that are leading the way to tackle throwaway plastic at source. Local business owners, Janine, Ben and Louis Pulford started the plastic free movement in Ferndown in 2018 because they felt passionate about the cause. They wanted to help reduce local consumption of SUPs. Registering with the SAS Plastic Free Communities movement, they set up a community-led steering group which implemented the SAS Plastic Free Schools education programme; obtained local council commitment and worked with local businesses, key organisations and community groups to minimise the amount of disposable plastics they use. “Our local community really got behind us,” said Janine, who is also the editor of 4Dorset and Viewpoint magazines. “Businesses are particularly keen and the 15 Plastic Free Champions we have on board have replaced or eliminated at least three SUPs each.” Plastic Free Ferndown has also linked up with community allies including local schools, The
Recycling Store and Haskins Garden Centre. The Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Community network aims to free the places where we live from SUPs. A five-point plan helps to empower communities to kick-start local grassroots action, which can be built upon. The marine conservation charity, based in Cornwall, says it wants to unite communities to tackle avoidable plastic from the beach all the way back to the brands and businesses who create it. It says it is not about removing all plastic from our lives, but kicking our addiction to throwaway plastic and changing the system that produces it. Rachel Yates, SAS Plastic Free Communities project officer, said: “It’s great to see the work that Ferndown has done to reduce the availability of avoidable plastics, raise awareness and encourage people to refill and reuse.” For more information visit www.plasticfree.org.uk and www.sas.org.uk “Because we have status, we don’t stop the campaign. We’d love to hear from more Ferndown businesses passionate about reducing single use plastic,” said chairman of PFF Max Bateman, “and new committee members and volunteers are always welcome.”

Now, you can deliver to the table some crunchy, tasty, delicious and, if you do your research beforehand, unusual vegetables to wow your family and friends when dining. The satisfaction in growing your own soft fruit and vegetables, produced by your very own hands – Is it worth considering? We have an ideal solution to help you realise this idea – an allotment at Longham Allotment Gardens. People who live within the town of Ferndown can access the allotments and we have several
different sizes to choose from. There is access to water and it’s fine to erect a shed, greenhouse or poly tunnel on the plot. And, I don’t know whether you’ve thought about growing ornamental plants as well – just thought I would throw that in. If you would like to consider taking on the tenancy of one of the Ferndown Council based allotments, please contact Tina on 01202 892249. Take a look at the table below for some ideas.

WESSEX JIU JITSU CLUB
Wessex Jitsu Club, founded in 2013, is a not for profit Junior Jiu Jitsu club run out of Ferndown Village Hall every Monday evening from 6:00pm teaching children aged 6yrs and older. Instructors volunteer their time to teach Jiu Jitsu, a defensive martial art, and learning it improves situational awareness and self-defence skills. They are part of the Jiu Jitsu Foundation National Governing Body and teach a modern form of the traditional Japanese martial art Jiu Jitsu, which simply described is a system of defensive techniques which use an attacker’s momentum against them. We aim to provide a friendly and safe environment where your child will progress as a martial artist and also as a person. We encourage children to respect each other and eventually teach others to develop their confidence and leadership skills. The current
instructors both started as children and have subsequently gone on to jointly run a club teaching children. The club trains regionally and competes nationally twice a year in the Midlands. Over the years we have been consistently successful bringing back multiple golds, silvers and bronzes in individual competitions and winning the ratio shield the last two years in a row. We are also fundraising in order to send a team to the internationals in July 2022. Due to our inclusive nature and being a not for profit club, Wessex Jitsu Club continually fundraises not only to improve each student’s sporting performance enabling them to travel and have access to courses and competitions, but also to provide social opportunities such as parties, weekends away etc. where they may otherwise not be able to access.

FERNDOWN ART SOCIETY
Our club is a group of amateur and semi-professional artists, who want to enjoy the company of like-minded people to exchange art skills and ideas. The Society has grown considerably in size since it was founded in 1972, but has retained its character of being a friendly group of people who enjoy art. We have untutored, informal meetings every Wednesday morning at the Barrington Centre, using our own materials and working on our own projects. The Society holds demonstration meetings in the Conference Room of the Barrington Centre on the third Thursday of each month (with the exception of August), when we invite a visiting artist to demonstrate their painting techniques. These are high-quality demonstrations in a variety of media including pastels, watercolour, oils, acrylics and other mixed media, lasting about two hours with a break for coffee/tea. They are free for club members and £5 for visitors. The list of workshops for 2020 up to April are as follows: •
16th January – Stephen Foster – Landscapes with pallet knife in acrylics
•
20th February – Alan Langford – Equestrian watercolours
•
19th March - tbc
Yearly membership is £33 with an additional charge of £27 per term for the Wednesday workshops. Regular exhibitions are being held during the year. The club has taken part in many SAA challenges and on several occasions had work reproduced in their national magazine. At this year’s art exhibition at Upton Park, visitors voted for their favourite exhibit. Carol Curran won with her work called `The Guru`, which was drawn using graphite pencils. Her drawing featured in the Leisure Painter `Club Artist` page. There are other artists in the club who regularly sell paintings and those members who enjoy painting as a hobby.

SUFFERING FROM ASTHMA OR COPD?
In early November, speakers Judith Green and Christian Cullum joined the COPD support group in the Ferndown day centre to share information on their speciality. Judith Green shared out her leaflets and gave a lovely talk for the blind about her experience with her own guide dog summer, with questions and answer session following. This was found to be of great interest and very informative. The second speaker Christian Cullum from Pari Medical gave a very constructive talk on Nebulisers for both adults and children. He did bring to light that they can be purchased from a couple of supermarkets at a very low price compared to some outlets. COPD meet at the Ferndown Day Centre on the first Thursday of each month between 1.30pm and 3.30pm. Refreshments are available. £3 charge goes toward hire of room. NHS professionals and Community Pharmacists attend and provide care, guidance and up to minute advancements to assist group members. The start of Christmas celebrations in Ferndown On Saturday November 30th, over 4,000 people visited the Ferndown Annual Christmas Market, and Christmas Lights Switch On, which took place in and around Penny’s Walk. This is one of our traditional events taking place which starts the festive season and is jointly organised by Ferndown and Parley Rotary CIO, Ferndown Chamber of Commerce and Ferndown Town Council. The merriment started at 1.00pm when Santa arrived and shortly began greeting excited children who had their photo taken and received a goody bag to take home. There was live entertainment from Ferndown Middle school choir, a brass band and adult choir, children’s rides all afternoon, and many local organisations running stalls in the covered walkways. With 5pm approaching, the excitement mounted as people gathered around for the ‘Big Switch On’ with our Mayor, Mrs Julie Robinson, the storybook Princesses and the very popular BBC reporter and weather presenter Sarah Farmer who pulled the lever with the Mayor’s granddaughter, switching on the lights for the Christmas tree in Victoria Road and Penny’s Walk. Entrance to the market was free and the proceeds went to several different charities including the RIBI Foundation, KGV Trust, JTYAF, Shelterbox, Molli Suit, Fletcher Foundation, Tools for Self Reliance, Kerela Floods as well as several others. The event would not be possible without the support of the vast number of volunteers who set up and performed and the generous support and sponsorship of Hearnes Estate Agents, Ferndown Town Council, Xerocad, Pulford Publicity and mags4dorset. 18

FERNDOWN’S MAYORAL CHRISTMAS CAROL SERVICE 2019
St. Mary’s Church was the wonderful backdrop for the Mayor’s Christmas Carol Service on a Tuesday evening in early December. The church was beautifully decorated with candles in red lanterns and lights along the pews and walls. Reverend Sarah Pix and Revered Patches Chabala provided a festive and inspiring service of which the Mayor is extremely thankful for. There were various hymns interspersed with readings and a special thank you goes to Ferndown Upper School choir and band who performed the uplifting carols, ‘Joy to The World’ and ‘Midnight’. Ferndown Upper School student Emilie Chadwick performed a beautiful solo of ‘Silent Night’ which wowed the congregation. The Mayor presented a special award to Grant Parrott who recently stepped down as the Branch Chairman of Ferndown Royal British Legion. Cllr Julie Robinson thanked Grant for his commitment and dedication to Ferndown’s Royal British Legion and the town’s community. After the service, all the guests were invited to enjoy some mince pies, mulled wine and a friendly conversation. The Mayor would like to thank everyone that attended the service and helped make it so special. 20

CHRISTMAS CARDS AT FERNDOWN LIBRARY SELL WELL Ferndown Library saw lots of Christmas Cards sold over the Christmas period in aid of several charities. Many thanks go to the volunteers who came each day to help with the selling of the cards. A big thank you to everyone who came, browsed and bought cards supporting the initiative. We will be back again next Christmas.
A SNOW QUEEN VISITS FERNDOWN LIBRARY The engaging singer Tanya Miller visited Ferndown Library on Saturday 7th December as a Snow Queen and sang some majestically icy themed songs to the young children who sat listening enthralled by her voice. Whilst the Snow Queen story was being told, the staff in the library helped children join in the craft activities which included making a crown, snowman Christmas cards and a magnetic skiing pug for the fridge. Everyone went away with wonderful memories of icy songs and handmade crafty items.

Poppy appeal launch 26 october 2019 This year the Barrington Centre hosted Ferndown’s Poppy Appeal Launch. As part of the Mayor’s speech, Councillor Mrs Julie Robinson said, “It is wonderful to see so many of you here today and I’m honoured to be a part of this year’s launch. By buying and proudly wearing a poppy, we can pay tribute to all those brave men and women who served our country and express our sympathy to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We are also honouring the thousands of former Servicemen and women and their families who are now in need of help and support”. The Mayor went on to talk about how important the Poppy Appeal is for raising money for the Royal British Legion and ultimately supporting the families of veterans, many of whom have had their lives changed by injuries and mental trauma.
She also thanked the Ferndown branch of the Royal British Legion, their team of volunteers and the staff at Ferndown Town Council for all their work in preparing for the event. The winner of the Best Dressed Shop Window was Jolliffe & Son Funeral Directors. In 2nd place was The Trussell Trust, 3rd place was the Ferndown Library and in 4th place was The Hearing Centre. Thanks go to all the shops who took part this year and everyone is encouraged to walk around the high street and admire their efforts. Grant Parrott Chairman of the Ferndown Royal British Legion Branch who has been instrumental in organising the event gave a passionate talk and asked the Bournemouth Marching Band to play ‘The Last Post’ before the explosion of poppies and the ‘2 minute’ silence.

Remembrance Day in Ferndown November 9th 2019
In Ferndown the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Dorset Jane Stichbury, the MP Chris Chope, the Mayor Julie Robinson, local Councillors, veterans and members of the public joined the nation and others around the world as they paid tribute to those who fought in previous wars. Ferndown Remembrance Parade and Service took place on Sunday 9th November with the parade starting from the gates of King George V playing fields. The Poole Sea Cadets band headed up the procession, closely followed by Mayor Julie Robinson and husband, the Deputy Lord Lieutenant Jane Stichbury escorted by Petty Officer Harry Harris along with several Councillors, staff from Ferndown Town Council, the Air Cadets, Sea Cadets, Girl Guides and Scouts movement. During the service poppies were laid next to the line of wreathes by the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts. Each poppy represented a local serviceman who lost his life in active service during World Wars I & II and Afghanistan. The Roll of Honour was read by Grant Parrott, Branch Chairman of the Royal British Legion Ferndown Branch and representatives from the Air Cadets, Sea Cadets, Girl Guides and Scouts movement. After the 2-minute silence and the Reveille these words were spoken by Grant Parrott, “When you go home, tell them of us and say – For your tomorrow, we gave our today. The Legion of the living salutes the Legion of the dead.” We will remember them… Following the service, the Parade formed up outside the church and made its way back along Church Road, not forgetting to deliver the customary salute as they passed the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Dorset and the Mayor who were positioned on the dais outside the Royal British Legion.
