Scientists have repeatedly warned that reducing the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is crucial to prevent further global temperature rise and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Consumers are becoming increasingly sensitive to issues related to the protection of the environment. Consequently, customers have increased expectations that businesses will adopt systems that allow them to cut emissions, following a general drive towards decarbonisation.
Large companies are required to disclose greenhouse gas emissions data. They must also show how they address environmental issues and are proactive in mitigating environmental risks.
The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is the world’s most widely used greenhouse gas accounting standard. The GHG Protocol provide guidelines for businesses to measure and manage gas emissions.
Many countries require companies to set corporate targets for cutting gas emissions and to provide GHG emissions reporting.
In 2016, 92% of the Fortune 500 companies used the GHG Protocol.
The GHG Protocol distinguishes three scopes (types) of emissions. These are the different kinds of emissions that a company creates in its operations and on its suppliers and customers.
Essentially, scope 1 is direct emissions that a company owns and that it can control, whereas scope 2 and 3 are indirect emissions, which are the consequence of the activities of the company but are generated by sources which are not controlled by the company.
The supply chain is responsible for around 75% of corporate emissions. Businesses are under increased pressure from regulators and consumers to take action and tackle emissions. Manufacturing businesses that use a large number of suppliers could set up a shared plan to cut emissions.
The first step is to collect the relevant data. However, many suppliers lack the capability to report emissions data. Many suppliers lack the expertise to implement effective carbon reduction strategies.
One way to resolve this problem could be to engage suppliers in a common program to cut emissions.
Collect data on emissions sources
To measure the emissions, companies need to collect data for each of GHGs:
• Fuel consumption: measure the quantity of fuels used for operations.
• Electricity usage: record how much electricity is consumed, typically from utility bills.
• Waste and water usage: monitor waste generation and water consumption.
• Transportation and logistics: track miles travelled, fuel consumption, and transportation methods for goods.
Key takeaway
Use carbon management software
Collecting data can be a complex operation. Many companies opt for carbon management or sustainability software to streamline data collection, analysis, and reporting. These platforms can help track emissions, calculate footprints, and assist with compliance and reporting requirements.
Conclusion
For a business the challenge of cutting emissions does not stop with the corporate activities of the business itself. There is an increased expectation by consumers that a business will go beyond what it can do in cutting emissions and that it will implement global strategies to cut emissions also in its supply chain.
A global plan with all the suppliers is therefore essential to implement an effective strategy for cutting emissions.
The first step is the collection of emissions data and then the various parties can work together to implement an effective plan to achieve the common goal of cutting emissions.

Last year’s Dorset Business Awards
Environmental category was incredibly competitive, with Dorset organisations showcasing their approach and commitment to sustainability.
Bournemouth University, is one of the biggest employers in the county with student body of over 17,000. Through clear leadership, strategic planning and focus on sustainability behaviours, it has embedded a culture of sustainability and environmental awareness across its operations.
Bournemouth University (BU) isn’t just about academic excellence; it’s about making a real-world difference. With a motto of “to learn is to change,” BU is deeply committed to environmental sustainability, embedding it into every aspect of university life.
A Robust Foundation
BU’s dedication to environmental stewardship is evident in its comprehensive strategy. Certified to ISO14001 and ISO50001 standards, the university boasts a robust Environmental and Energy Management System. This framework, guided by a dedicated Sustainability Committee with representatives from across the university, ensures clear policies, active data collection, and measurable impact.
Action-Oriented Approach
At the heart of BU’s strategy lies the Climate and Ecological Crisis Action Plan (CECAP). This ambitious plan outlines 94 actions across 8 key objectives, targeting a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030/31. From investing in renewable energy sources like solar panels and ground source heat pumps to implementing a “pay-by-weight” waste management system, BU is taking concrete steps to minimize its environmental footprint. Its Estates and Sustainability teams has successfully switched Dorset House to low carbon heating. The project, which is the first of its kind at BU, has replaced fossil fuel natural gas-fired boilers in Dorset House with an air to water heat pump system, which should reduce BU’s emissions by an
estimated scope one gas carbon emissions of 71 tCO2e (71 tonnes of Greenhouse Gas emissions) per year.
As part of its CECAP, Staff and students are encouraged to use the circle of control model to keep track of how their actions can make a difference - to focus on what they controlsuch as what they buy, what they eat and how they choose to travel. Then focus on who and what they can influence.
BU’s Climate and Ecological Crisis Action PLan (CECAP) lies at the heart of the organisation’s strategy. [Add caption)
Championing Biodiversity
BU recognises the importance of protecting biodiversity along side carbon reduction. With initiatives like wildflower meadows, new tree plantings, and bird boxes across its campuses, the university is creating havens for wildlife. BU’s research actively contributes to regional biodiversity, with projects like artificial reef installations in Poole Harbour and habitat surveys in the Purbecks National Park.
Engaging the Community
The university fosters a culture of sustainability through staff and student engagement. Initiatives like the “Refill Campus” campaign, which encourages reusable coffee cups and provides water refill points, promote eco-conscious behaviour. By embedding sustainability into the curriculum and offering innovative learning opportunities like Carbon Literacy training, BU empowers its community to become agents of change.
Looking Ahead
BU’s commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey. It recognises the continued need to invest in new technologies, monitor its progress, and engage its community in creating a greener future. By fostering
a culture of environmental responsibility and actively contributing to solutions, BU is truly leading the way in higher education sustainability.

Eco Sustainable Solutions (Eco) has landed many awards over the last three decades.
But winning the ‘Environmental Impact’ category of the 2024 Dorset Business Awards was an undoubted highlight for this Dorset-based business. Justin Dampney, Managing Director, said: “Three words - environment, innovation and sustainability – are at the heart of everything we do, both internally and externally.
“To have that recognised by our business peers was a fantastic achievement.”
Founded in 1995, the pioneering familyrun business is based at Parley with sites also at Piddlehinton and Weymouth.
Each year Eco recycles over 230,000 tonnes of organic waste from Dorset, Hampshire and surrounding areas, converting it into green energy and high-quality landscape products.
As well as giving waste - such as the contents of your green bin or food waste caddy – a second lease of life, Eco strives to lead the way in the development and implementation of standalone renewable energy projects. Its sites are powered by the company’s own renewable energy sources including the Biomass CHP (combined heat and power) plant at Parley, which is fuelled by waste wood, and it’s AD (anaerobic digestion) plant at Piddlehinton, fed by local household food waste. Excess power is fed to the grid, generating enough green energy to power over 6,500 homes!
Work has now started on building a second AD plant which will convert additional local food waste and other organic material into Bio-CNG (green gas) and bio-fertiliser.
Costing £15.6 million, the facility is one
of the largest projects to be undertaken in Eco’s history and will be sited at Parley.
Eco is also converting its fleet of trucks, which transport waste to and from the facility, from diesel to green gas generated from the food waste.
Justin said: “This project is an extremely exciting one for Eco!
“The thought that your leftover peelings will be directly converted into a gas molecule which, after a bit of treatment, could be used to heat next week’s family dinner, is pretty cool..”
From 1996 until 2023, Eco’s operations have prevented 1.9 million tonnes of CO2 from being emitted to the atmosphere.
It achieved this figure through the recycling of over 1.2 million tonnes of green waste, 1.2 million tonnes of soil, 0.92 million tonnes of waste wood and 0.62 million tonnes of food waste.
The total tonnage of waste recycled since Eco opened its gates now totals more than 4
million tonnes.
Impressive figures for a company which now has an annual turnover of £20 million and employs 49 people.
But Eco has even more ambitious plans for the future.
They include building a new Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) at Parley which will divert local waste away from landfill whilst still allowing plenty of opportunity for more recycling.
Justin said: “I’m incredibly proud of our team and their commitment to the business.
“These projects, like everything we do, are all about reducing the impact of local waste on the local environment. But we never rest on our laurels. There is so much more we plan to do to continue to meet the rigorous environmental objectives we set ourselves.”

Dorset Chamber spoke to Mark Sherwood of Auditel Carbon Solutions on a question posed by many businesses … What is a Carbon Footprint?
In order to achieve net zero companies have to reduce their carbon footprint.
Carbon in this context is the Green House Gases released as a result of a company’s actions. Scientists have identified seven main greenhouse gases that contribute towards global warming, as a direct result of man’s activities. The most abundant of these is Carbon Dioxide so scientists adopted ‘Carbon’ as the base unit of measurement. The other six GHG’s that form part of your carbon footprint are calculated using a formula. This creates a simplified number, that is expressed when measuring your GHG emissions, as a ton of Carbon Dioxide equivalent. Thus it’s possible that your most significant emissions are not Carbon Dioxide but Methane or
Carbon Neutral - short term
Hydrofluorocarbons. Understanding this is essential, in enabling businesses to effectively reduce their carbon footprint.
The base principle adopted in relation to net zero and the Green House Gas Protocol is that you can’t reduce something you haven’t measured. The first step towards achieving net zero is to measure an organisations carbon footprint. This process is divided into three areas that were originally set out in the 2001 and now form the basis of all mandatory greenhouse gas emissions reporting in the UK.
Scope 1 are those GHG emissions from sources that a company owns or controls directly, for example burning fuel in the company vehicles.
Means balancing your reducing GHG emissions by “offsetting” an equivalent amount of carbon for the amount produced.
Net Zero - long term
This is reached with the amount of residual C02e (carbon dioxide emissions) emitted is matched by the quantity of C02e removed or captured. You cannot achieve net-zero by offsetting.
Scope 2 are indirect emissions from where the energy the business uses is produced. The emissions caused when generating electricity makes up the majority of this for most organisations. Scope 3 encompasses all the indirect emissions from both the upstream and downstream value chain that are not included
in Scope 1. They are challenging to measure as they sit outside the company’s direct control and comprise 15 categories including; purchased goods, employee commuting, use of sold products, transportation and distribution and leased assets.
Scope 3 emissions normally account for more than 70% of a company’s carbon footprint. Collecting robust and accurate data in this area is a critical part of the process in understanding the company’s true impact on the climate.
This series of short articles are designed to help inform your decision making process. Next month we will explore: How you measure your Carbon Footprint. www.auditel.co.uk
If you have a question relating to Net Zero or Carbon or would like us to address a specific topic in a future article, please email me: mark.sherwood@auditel.co.uk
“There are so many new tools and announcements about AI, I don’t know where to start”
Sound familiar?
I’ve heard this a lot at events I’ve been to when talk turns to AI, and it’s one of the reasons we developed Campfire in partnership with Dorset Chamber.
My answer is always to start with the use-cases. What are the repetitive or time-consuming tasks you do now, that you could do faster or easier using AI?
As part of the Campfire AI workshop, we show a range of use-case examples and a simple framework to help you identify, prioritise, evaluate and pilot them in your organization.
Most organisations are just starting out with AI, there are pockets of use across their company in disparate ways, often with no guiding strategy or safeguards.
As AI gets integrated into more and more systems, and as use grows by your team
do you have a strategy for sharing best practice? Do you have a defined way to evaluate the impact of AI in your business?
Are you being transparent with your customers and suppliers about your use of AI? Are you using it in ways that are consistent with your brand values, but also safely and legally.
Deciding when to use AI in your business is as much a brand decision, as it is a technological or business decision.
Campfire is a half-day workshop designed to get you, and your organisation started on adopting AI. It’s a framework and roadmap for answering all these questions and more.
For more information and to join us for the next one, visit: www. dorsetchamber.co.uk/campfire/
PS Don’t just take our word for it: 100% of previous attendees have said they’d recommend this workshop to others. Luke Williams, Campfire trainer and Group Head of AI @ Intergage.
Adopting electric vehicles (EVs) is an increasingly popular choice for UK businesses, offering a range of financial and environmental benefits. Not only do businesses gain tax advantages, but employees also enjoy fuel savings, while companies contribute to a reduced carbon footprint.
Tax Advantages:
UK businesses can take advantage of various tax incentives when purchasing EVs. Through the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme, businesses can claim 100% tax relief on the cost of electric vehicles and related charging infrastructure in the first year. This helps offset the upfront cost of transitioning to an electric fleet.
The Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax rate for electric cars is also significantly lower than for petrol or diesel vehicles. This makes EVs a cost-effective choice for businesses providing company cars to employees. Furthermore, businesses can reclaim VAT on the purchase of electric vehicles and charging equipment, further reducing the overall investment.
Fuel Savings:
EVs offer substantial fuel savings compared to traditional petrol or diesel vehicles. The cost of charging an EV is much lower, with an average cost of around 4-5p per mile, compared to 15-20p per mile for a petrol car. For businesses with employees who regularly travel for work, these savings can amount to hundreds of pounds annually, reducing overall operational costs.
Reduced Carbon Footprint: Electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions, making them an effective solution for businesses looking to reduce their carbon footprint. By adopting EVs, companies can contribute to cleaner air, align with sustainability goals, and improve their corporate social responsibility (CSR) profile.
Switching to EVs offers UK businesses tax savings, fuel cost reductions, and a positive environmental impact, making it a smart, forward-thinking investment. If you are interested in making the switch to electric, contact the team at pooleaudi.co.uk
Dorset Chamber spoke to the chairman at The Sandbanks Ferry, Mike Kean, about the history and significance of The Sandbanks Ferry and and the upcoming public consultation.
Q.1. Tell us about the history of The Sandbanks Ferry.
Sandbanks to Shell Bay first had a ropepulled pedestrian ferry service in Victorian times. The Bournemouth-Swanage Motor Road & Ferry Company was formed in 1923 by the Aman family and its first vessel was steam driven with a 15-car capacity. The service officially launched on 15th July 1926 and carried 100,000 pedestrians and 12,000 cars before the end of the summer.
The current vessel, ‘Bramble Bush Bay’ came into service in 1994, with a 48-car capacity. Now, the ferry carries approximately 200,000 pedestrians, 65,000 bicycles and motorbikes, 700,000 cars and vans, 3,000 trucks and 9,000 buses and coaches every year.
The figures illustrate how the service has long been a critical transport link in south Dorset.
Q.2. Who owns The Sandbanks Ferry now and how are your family involved?
My family owns The Fairacres Group – a parent business that owns The BournemouthSwanage Motor Road & Ferry Company.
The Fairacres Group has been in the Kean family for three generations. My father and great-grandmother started the business in the 1940s, beginning with a small confectionery company in Chelmsford.
A notable achievement for my dad was launching the Silver Star Shipping Line in the 1970s, operating vessels between the UK and
South Atlantic until the Falklands conflict.
I joined the business in 1988 – five years after my family bought The Sandbanks Ferry. I’m proud to have inspired my daughter, Rosie, to join the business in 2020. With her support, we’re working to futureproof the business for the next generation of customers and staff.
Q.3. How has the service changed since your family’s acquisition? It’s been incredible to see ‘Bramble Bush Bay’ evolve. At over 30 years old, it’s still performing at an exceptional level with a mechanical uptime of over 99%.
We’ve made several other improvements, including rebuilding both slipways, constructing new toll booths at Shell Bay, introducing computerised toll systems, and creating new office and workshop facilities.
Q.4. Many local communities have a vested interest in the ferry. How are you engaging with those people? Our community is hugely important to us. We appreciate every decision impacts all our valued stakeholders, including our neighbours, team, and travellers.
We recently put forward proposals for a new toll application to help fund a replacement ferry in 2034, with a Public Inquiry taking place in January 2025. Over the past months, we’ve met with various stakeholders including government officials, councillors, and local businesses.
“My family has seen the business through many challenges and remains committed to its long-term continuance.”
We hosted a Community Event in December 2024, where over 70 members of our community met us, asked questions, and challenged us in a fair and measured way. Our community engagement efforts are continuing beyond our application, and we’re committed to a longterm, collaborative relationship.
Q.5. What does the future hold for The Sandbanks Ferry?
I’m excited to bring the ferry into a new chapter. It will be a big moment as we bid a fond farewell to ‘Bramble Bush Bay’ and welcome a new vessel in 10 years’ time. It’ll also be invigorating to see Rosie grow into her role and help us drive the business into a successful future.

Dorset Chamber spoke to Laura Bush who leads the Dorset Work Experience programme on behalf of Dorset Chamber and the Dorset Careers Hub, on how to offer a great work experience for both the student and the employer.
Offering quality workplace experiences is a vital step in shaping the future workforce. However, according to a report highlighted by the BBC*, fewer than half of GCSE students participate in work experience. Businesses can bridge this gap by offering flexible, engaging, and well-structured opportunities.
Here are some top tips:
1. Flexibility Works
Tailor placements to suit your business’s capacity—whether it’s a two-hour job shadow or a twoweek immersive experience. Every interaction matters and offers valuable insights into the world of work.
2. Streamline Communication
A dedicated webpage and email address can simplify applications and enquiries. Clearly outline available opportunities, the application process, and key deadlines.
3. Prepare Resources in Advance
Develop a library of resources in advance to keep the students busy on placement. Include clear instructions, project guides, and interactive activities to keep them engaged.
4. Meet Before the Placement Discuss mutual goals with students to tailor the experience to their aspirations. Aligning expectations creates a rewarding and productive placement.
5. Involve the Team
Engage graduates, apprentices, or placement students to help organise activity and offer mentoring. They can offer relatable advice, mentorship, and engaging insights that resonate with younger generations.
Dorset Chamber has demonstrated an innovative approach to engaging students through a photography initiative aimed at enhancing the imagery for their Workplace Experiences project ran in partnership with Dorset Careers Hub. This opportunity was divided into three stages:
Stage One: A short presentation delivered at school premises introduced Dorset Chamber, its functions, and the types of roles it offers. During the session, the brief for the desired photography was shared with the students.
Stage Two: The students worked independently on the project with the support of their teachers, developing and capturing images that reflected their creative vision.
Stage Three: The students visited Dorset Chamber’s offices to present their selected photographs in the boardroom to Marketing Manager, Caroline Sharp and Project Manager, Laura Bush. The experience also included a tour of the office and an introduction to CEO Ian Girling and the wider team.
This initiative has involved three groups from St Edward’s School, Poole, as well as the Futures Group and the Sixth Form group at Autism Unlimited. By engaging young talent and offering real-world learning, Dorset Chamber has created a model placement experience that benefits both students and the organisation. The photos used within this article have been taken by students at St Edwards School, Poole.

The £2 fare cap – part of the Government’s Help for Households initiative ended in December, but Morebus has reassured the community that there are still plenty of affordable options for bus travel across the area including the Commuter Club.
“Although maximum single journey fares are to rise to £3 from 1 January 2025, there are still plenty of other options for bus passengers here. Some single fares will be less than £3,” said Nikki Honer, Morebus head of communications.
Zone A adult single fares will be £2.20, £2.40, £2.70 or £3 – depending on how far people travel. Most routes will no longer have a return fare. For customers making more than one journey a day, a zone A Dayrider costs £5 via the app or tap on, tap off.
One double decker bus has the potential to take 75 cars off the road. So, with the Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch areas considered to be one of the most congested areas in the UK, Morebus is using some of the funding from BCP Council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan funding to continue to run its Commuter Club.
Employers are encouraged to sign up for the Commuter Club membership scheme to enable staff to have cheaper bus fares via the more bus app.

In December 2024, the United Kingdom officially joined the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), marking a significant milestone in its post-Brexit trade strategy. As the first European nation to enter the bloc, the UK’s accession expands the CPTPP’s global reach and is expected to foster stronger economic ties with some of the world’s fastest-growing markets.
Background of the CPTPP
The CPTPP is a free trade agreement that currently includes 11 countries across the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and several Southeast Asian nations. The partnership covers a diverse range of sectors, from agriculture to advanced manufacturing, and represents nearly 15% of global GDP. Established in 2018, the CPTPP has become one of the most significant free trade blocs globally, aiming to promote economic integration, reduce tariffs, and set high standards for trade and investment.
The UK’s Path to Membership
The UK first applied to join the CPTPP in early 2021, shortly after finalizing its departure from the European Union. Negotiations were thorough, covering areas such as market access, rules of origin, intellectual property rights, and environmental standards. By mid-2023, the existing CPTPP members had agreed to the UK’s accession, and ratification processes were completed by the end of 2024, allowing the UK to officially join in December.
Economic Benefits for the UK
Joining the CPTPP offers numerous potential economic benefits for the UK:
• Increased Market Access: Over 99% of UK goods exported to CPTPP countries will now benefit from reduced or zero tariffs, enhancing the competitiveness of British products in these markets.
• Opportunities for Key Sectors: Sectors such as automotive, agriculture, food and drink, pharmaceuticals, and financial services are expected to benefit the most. For example, British whisky and automotive components are likely to see increased demand due to reduced tariffs.
• Supply Chain Resilience: The agreement’s flexible rules of origin allow UK businesses to source inputs from any CPTPP member country and still qualify for preferential tariffs. This can help UK companies build more resilient and costeffective supply chains.
Strategic Significance
Beyond economic gains, the UK’s entry into the CPTPP holds strategic importance. It signals a commitment to engaging with the Indo-Pacific region, which is projected to account for a significant share of global economic growth in the coming decades. By aligning itself with countries in this region, the UK aims to secure its place in future trade and investment flows.
Potential Challenges
While the benefits are significant, there are potential challenges associated with CPTPP membership:
Regulatory Alignment: As a member of the CPTPP, the UK may need to align some of its regulations with those of the bloc, which could pose challenges, particularly in areas such as food safety and environmental standards.
Balancing Commitments: The UK will need
to balance its commitments under the CPTPP with its existing trade agreements, including its Free Trade Agreement with the European Union and bilateral deals with individual CPTPP members.
Future Prospects
The UK’s membership in the CPTPP is expected to open new doors for trade and investment. Analysts predict that the agreement could boost the UK economy by up to £2 billion annually by 2040, though much depends on how businesses leverage the new opportunities. The government has pledged to support businesses in navigating the CPTPP’s rules and maximizing the benefits of membership.
Furthermore, with the CPTPP actively considering new members, the UK could play a key role in the bloc’s future expansion. Countries like Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Indonesia have already expressed interest in joining, and the UK’s involvement could help shape the bloc’s future direction.
The UK’s accession to the CPTPP marks a bold step in its global trade policy, positioning the country as a key player in the IndoPacific region. While challenges remain, the agreement offers significant opportunities for economic growth, trade diversification, and geopolitical influence. As the CPTPP continues to evolve, the UK’s role in shaping its future will be crucial, potentially setting the stage for a new era of global trade relations.
