Ferndown Youth Centre - Riffs Ferndown Youth Centre is thriving once again! It re-opened 18 months ago after Dorset County Council stopped funding youth centres and is now solely funded by Ferndown Town Council. Aaron Fellows, the Youth Worker in Charge said, “We are now a good way into the new school year and the centre is experiencing a high level of young people attending and enjoying the evening sessions. There is a new and exciting programme of activities for the evening sessions this term. We have already enjoyed pancake making, where we saw plenty of combinations of toppings. Coming up - we have dance and sport competitions as well as our yearly Easter egg hunt”. The Easter holidays will soon be upon us, we are already planning our opening times which will be advertised soon. The youth club’s young persons council is due to have their first meeting and I am looking forward to the young people’s ideas and help in the coming year. We are working hard to continue offering excellent advice and support to our young people around a variety of concerns and are now offering one to one sessions, which young people book on a Wednesday between 5 and 6pm. Maria Follan, head of Youth Services said, “I am excited to announce that we have recently employed a new youth worker to add to our existing team and we are looking for an additional youth worker for 6 hours. We look forward to sharing the experience and ideas that they bring with them”.

To get more of a flavour of what the youth club offers, look at our Facebook page, Ferndown Youth Centre – Riffs. The centre also offers a variety of rooms to rent both during the week and the weekend. There is a hall, café area and a room which can be set up in a variety of different ways, including soft chairs or tables. There is also a dedicated area at the rear of the building, which comprises of a large room, and can be used as a group work/meeting space or a waiting area. There are two counselling rooms and a further room that can either be used as a kitchen or a clinical space. These can be rented either combined or singularly. If you are interested in booking any of these rooms, please contact Maria Follan at Ferndown Town Council either on 01202 892249 or manager@ferndown. gov.uk. For all youth club enquires please contact Aaron, the Youth Worker in Charge, on 01202 874448 or aaron.fellows@ferndown.gov.uk, or through our Facebook page, Ferndown Youth Centre - Riffs.

Earlier this year, Susan Sutherland, the Project Manager for the Turbary Resource Centre on the Heatherlands Estate in Ferndown received the award ‘Best Community Project’ from East Dorset District Council for the support work that is carried out by the ‘East Dorset CAP Debt Centre’. The award was sponsored by Hoburne and was presented to Susan Sutherland by Toni Coombs who said, “There are so many unsung heroes in our community who do their bit to support and help others”.

World Women’s Month

The month of March saw lots of ‘World Women’ events occurring throughout the world and in our corner of Dorset on Friday March 1st, fifty women from Ferndown and West Moors gathered at Pinehurst Community Chapel to mark the Women’s World Day of Prayer. This women-led, global, ecumenical event happens annually. This year, the service was prepared by the women of Slovenia, with the theme “Come, everything is Ready!” reminding us that God’s blessings are open to all. The prayers and readings focussed on caring for the marginalised members of society. This service takes place all round the world, translated into over 90 languages, and celebrated in around 135

countries – always on the first Friday in March. The readers at Pinehurst Church came from various churches in Ferndown and West Moors. An offering was taken, which will go to the World Day of Prayer (WDP) HQ in Kent. Last year, the offerings nationally amounted to over £250,000, which were given to charities in Britain and around the world.

Calling Ferndown! This is the sixth ‘Fete on the Fields’, so come down and see all the fun. The fete is running over the weekend of 21st - 23rd June on the KGV fields.

Entrance is free! All profits will go to local charities. Please put the date in your diary and look out for more information on posters and in the local press as we get closer to the big day. We look forward to seeing you there.

The fairground opens on Friday afternoon and runs through to Sunday. The main part of the Fete runs on Saturday from 11am to 5pm, kicking off with the 10k and 5k runs. There will be: live music all day; children’s entertainment; raptor flying displays; classic and custom cars; model aircraft flying displays; and lots of stalls. Food and drink (beer and wine for the grown-ups), so make a day of it. The John Thornton pram race is later in the afternoon.

Custom and Classic Car Show Last year the ‘Fete on the Field’ had an amazing car show with more types of vehicles than ever before. This year we are expecting even more entries to the show - all ages of custom and classic (modern and old) cars, commercials, agricultural vehicles, steamers and motorbikes are welcome. We hope that there will also be a variety of static displays to provide extra interest for everyone. This year’s target is to break the 100-vehicle barrier, last year 94 vehicles were on display. If you wish to show a vehicle, booking in advance is free, or alternatively, on the day we ask just £2 for un-booked vehicles which will include a commemorative plaque, something which will be available to those who have prebooked at the same price. 12

Booking forms are available for download from https://www.ferndownfotf.org/classic-carshow. There is one for individual entries and one for club stands. Please send the completed forms by email to carshow@ferndownfotf.org, or deliver or send them to: John Baxter, Greenacres, Angel Lane, Longham, Ferndown, BH22 9DZ, or by telephone 01202 897884. Please don’t withhold your number. John is very much looking forward to receiving your form and welcoming you and your vehicle on the 22nd June at the KGV. If you book, please do tell your friends to come along and make the day extra special for you!

Ferndown Town Council have 22 second hand Gopak benches for sale at a price of £10 each. They are in good condition being stackable or folding. Dimensions are 1830mm w, 254mm d, 432mm h. Ideal for groups such as scouts, cubs, guides or brownies. These benches would cost £88 new. If interested, please contact Keith Wilcox on 07800 844804 who is based at KGV where the benches are located.

Litter Picking in and around Ferndown Our first litter picking team effort occurred on Monday 18th March in the morning. We had several people begin tackling litter on Ringwood Road. Ferndown Town Council this year are looking for volunteers to get involved with a litter picking campaign to run every eight weeks in different areas of the town. We are also looking for any donations of high-vis jackets and hand-held

litter picking devices as well as practical assistance – this is where we think there is a great opportunity for local businesses to get involved. If you can spare a few hours every eight weeks to help keep our town looking pleasant and welcoming, please contact Ferndown Town Council on 01202 892249 for more information on how this will be working in practice.

Your support will be greatly appreciated. Over the last couple of years, we have seen residents in Ferndown support the Great British Spring Clean in 2017, removing some fly tipping, vegetation and litter. Ferndown Upper School pupils clearing litter from the areas surrounding the local schools and the wooded area bordering Wimborne Road.

Here’s a chance to extend our record of litter removal this year and into next year too! 16

Ferndown Horticultural Update

As part of the spring scene in Ferndown on Saturday 6th of April Ferndown Horticultural Association held their Spring Flower Show in the village hall on Church Road in Ferndown. The show was open from 1pm to 4pm and admission to the show was FREE. The Spring Show is an Open Show, and anyone can enter the competitive classes. They had classes for daffodils, flowers and pot plants, homecraft, floral decoration and children’s classes for ages 10 and under, and 11 to 16-year olds. Did you know the Ferndown Horticultural Association meets on the 2nd Thursday of every

month at the Girl Guide Hall, Spinneys Lane, Ferndown, BH22 9BZ? Visitors are welcome to attend. The entry fee is £2.00, but as there are 10 meetings a year at only £8.00 to join, this works out at 80p a meeting. There are plant sales, raffles, tea and biscuits, with mini competitions at the meetings with vouchers to be won. All of the meetings are listed on Ferndown Town Council’s website www.ferndown.gov.uk under community, hobbies and interests or you can email Ruth on hudheylass@live.co.uk for further information.

There will be a Defibrillator Awareness Session Friday 17th May at 7.30pm at St. Mary’s Church Hall, Church Rd, Ferndown BH22 9EU All welcome to attend - refreshments on arrival. This training session is being run by NHS South Western Ambulance Service. Defibrillator units can save lives and it’s wonderful to have a number available in Ferndown. The unit “talks you through” what to do in the event of an emergency, but training is highly recommended, so that you have prior knowledge and confidence in how to use it should the need arise. This training session is open to all and is free of charge. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how to potentially save a life – to book your place call 01202 897087 or email office@stmarysferndown.org.uk

WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP

You may or may not be aware that the Ferndown North Neighbourhood Watch will be removing the fee payable by members. Our aim is to enable all the residents of our area to be fully aware of the benefits and role of the Neighbourhood Watch scheme without any cost. Being a good neighbour has huge benefits and makes your community friendlier and safer too. By looking out for your neighbours, watching out for those who are elderly or vulnerable and sharing crime prevention advice you can help keep you and your neighbours safe and your homes secure. Because we are no longer asking for a membership fee, we are hoping that we will be able to get a complete blanket cover of Ferndown North; create a better association with our neighbours and make us more vigilant and live in a safer place. We still need some more volunteers to deliver our information Broadsheet to areas where we previously have had no contact. If you are willing, you could deliver the broadsheets to your local area or just your neighbours; this happens three times a year. This might appeal to regular dog walkers for instance, or for any community minded person who wants a little exercise and at the same time keep an eye out for their neighbours (why not get the family involved)? 20

Watch Your Speed in Ferndown

Last year in a trial two-month period our new group of Community Speedwatch volunteers successfully completed eleven roadside sessions and were seen by over 5,200 motorists, with many motorists slowing when they saw their speed was being monitored. Ron Cross, CSW Co-ordinator, said “We are aware that motorists sometimes don’t realise they are exceeding the speed limits. It is just a small minority of motorists that unfortunately don’t care. Our presence, we hope, will contribute to keeping our roads safe by encouraging all motorists to regularly check their speed and observe the speed limits”. He added that we have initially focused our monitoring in Church Road and Victoria Road, but with support from Dorset Police, we have gained permission to monitor several roads, including Glenmoor Road (close to Parley First School) and some residential roads used as quick shortcuts by some motorists. We have been welcomed by many passing motorists and local residents, with a number asking us to patrol their roads. We have also attracted interest from more volunteers wanting to help keep our roads safe. Another concern of residents, which has been brought to our attention, is the increasing number of motorists not stopping at traffic lights or pedestrian crossings on the Ringwood Road and Wimborne Road East. We, unfortunately, are not able to patrol these crossings. Please could you help by reminding others, especially children, to always wait until all traffic has stopped. We still need more volunteers and if you would like to help and can spare a couple of hours a month, please phone Ron on 07592 790199.

Ferndown Library now operating Plastic Free Saturdays Here is another initiative being taken in Ferndown contributing towards Plastic Free Ferndown. The Ferndown Library have started ‘Plastic Free Saturday’ at Ferndown library, where they are recycling crisp packets, plastic lids and pens that people can drop off in boxes within the library. The items are being taken to Ferndown First School who are recycling the crisp packets and pens with Terracycle and the lids with Lush. The money raised will go to the John Thornton Young Achievers charity. The library is also collecting postage stamps for the air ambulance.

The Council’s Lengthsman and assistant have been out in all weathers this winter tidying up the pathways around Ferndown. Recently they spent a considerable amount of time removing debris from the verges along Wimborne Road from Sainsbury’s roundabout to Victoria Road. They removed a staggering 16 tonnes of leaves and mud. Ferndown Matters - The Magazine of Ferndown Town Council

We wish to pay tribute to Len Hawker who was the Mayor of Ferndown from 1994 to 1995 and led a very active life here in Ferndown. He originally came to Ferndown when he was 6 months old and had been a resident here ever since, reaching the age of 90. The Ferndown Village Hall also recognise his loyalty and commitment over the 40 years he has been involved and have named one of their rooms after him. Len was a keen footballer and played football in Ferndown. After giving up his boots, he continued to watch the football being played every Saturday at King George’s Charity Fields (KGV). He was a founder member of Ferndown Tennis Club also based

28

at KGV, which has been running for over 50 years now. He was also connected to the Barrington Centre and was at their very first meeting and he has served as a president of the Ferndown Royal British Legion in years past. He gave a huge amount of time, energy and commitment to the town of Ferndown and we thank Len and his wife Dot for all their commitment and dedication over the years.

A Christmas Party to Remember The members and volunteers at Penny’s Friendship activity club were grateful to Ferndown Town Council for the generous donation of £160 to fund a Christmas party last year. The kind donation paid for an afternoon of delicious food at the club followed by entertainment by the members’ favourite singing sisters Sweet Harmony. Our members would like to express how much they enjoyed the afternoon and very much appreciated being treated to such lovely food (M&S food platters, fruit juice and Christmas cake). According to our dedicated volunteer club leader, many of our members were still discussing how much fun they had a week later! At Brendoncare, they endeavour to maintain affordability and value for money in their clubs so that the positive ageing experience they offer is readily available to everyone. Support from councils like Ferndown Town Council is fundamental to guarantee the longevity of their clubs and ensures that they continue to provide fun and friendship for all older people across Dorset and Hampshire.
