EDITORIA
Hello Readers
There was great excitement in our house on 19 April when our youngest son Louis returned home. He’d spent nearly seven months in Australia and had a short visit to Thailand to round off his trip abroad. Wearing a healthy tan and sporting long dreadlocks, bleached blond by the Aussie sunshine, he looked taller than when he left. It was a joyous homecoming and what an amazing time he’d had. Will we see him back at the office? Well Australia has had a huge impact on him and made him realise that he prefers the great outdoors to being cooped up in an office. In Australia, he spent a long time working on the land and living in a tepee. We will no doubt benefit from his design skills, but he is keen to source some gardening work on a freelance basis because he loves being outdoors. I remember telling you how hard last month’s magazine was to pull together. Well this one was even worse. My poor Mum ended up in hospital with a bad case of shingles and she really was ill. Luckily she is back home now and has recovered remarkably well. But please take heed. If you get an unexplained rash on your body, don’t ignore it. Get to the doctor and have it checked out. If shingles gets a grip, it really is nasty. To round off, let me tell you that this magazine is brimming with news, features and competitions. A bench and table worth over £300 for your garden is just one of the prizes on offer this month. Enjoy!

Choco-tastic sur-prize
EASTER EGG PRESENTATION: Graham Palmer with James and Paula
C
ongratulations to James Garland from Cranborne who won the mags4dorset ‘Spot the Bunny’ competition in the March issue of 4Dorset. Five-year-old James attends Cranborne First School and loves puzzles. His mother Paula said, “He particularly likes spot the difference. This competition was right up his street. He did it on his own as spotting the bunnies was a fun thing to do.” Paula had picked up 4Dorset whilst shopping in Wimborne and was very glad she did. She accompanied James to collect his chocolate egg from Graham Palmer at The Square Corner in Wimborne who sponsored the prize. James couldn’t stop smiling when the egg was presented to him. The correct answer to the competition was 5 bunnies and they appeared in the following advertisements: Contakt Carpets, Dumpton School, Honeybrook Farm & Country Park, Kitchen Style, Raffles Restaurant. Judging by the number of incorrect answers that flooded in, this competition was much harder than it seemed. Well done James.

The suggested improvements include a dog agility area, cycle racks and a priority cycle lane, new play structures and picnic areas for families, improvements to vehicle and pedestrian access at the entrance and a larger car park. A more varied and attractive landscape will also be created establishing patches of wild flowers and meadow alongside existing mown areas. Matti Raudsepp, Head of Leisure and Open Spaces for the Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership said, “We would encourage everyone with an interest in the site to give us their thoughts.” The public consultation runs until 31 May and responses can be given online at www.dorsetforyou.com/ stanpitrec. Paper copies are also available at the Civic Offices, Steamer Point and Stanpit Marsh Information Centres, Christchurch and Highcliffe Libraries and the Christchurch Information Centre.

Have your say on boundary changes
mags4dorset on Facebook www.facebook.com/mags4dorset.news
Do you agree with the Local Government Boundary Commission for England’s draft proposals of the new council ward changes? The Commission has proposed that East Dorset District Council should have 29 councillors, seven fewer than the current arrangements. Recommendations also outline how those councillors should represent seven single-member, five two-member and four three-member wards across the district. For full details visit www.consultation.lgbce.org.uk and www.lgbce. org.uk. Hard copies of the draft proposals can be viewed at council buildings and libraries. The 12 week consultation period ends on 8 July 2013. I
t never ceases to amaze me just how our branch manages to survive financially in these days of cutbacks and restraint. Money can be difficult to generate and because our running costs are in the region of £170,000 per annum, raising sufficient funds is crucial. As we are autonomous and unfortunately receive no local or national funding, we need to rely on the general public for financial support. We have a great team of fundraisers who organise spring, summer, autumn and Christmas fairs, quiz evenings and theme nights throughout the year. New supporters are always welcome, so why not ring us to check our forthcoming events? Teams coordinate street collections, often braving the great British weather, raising thousands of pounds for us. Last July we were fortunate when being chosen

by Sainsbury’s Ferndown as their charity for the year, enabling regular collections at their store. Another source of much needed revenue comes from our in-house shop called ‘Aladdin’s Cave’. Members and guests can browse its well-stocked shelves before buying that elusive article or gift that you’ve always wanted but never knew where to purchase. All the donated items displayed for sale are of good quality and very reasonably priced. Why not visit us
to check it out or even donate that unwanted present, to help raise funds for our Centre. The sky’s the limit for our brilliant supporters who raise money by getting sponsored. Whether it’s jumping out of aeroplanes, running marathons, baking cakes or any of the other 1001 ideas that these wonderful people think up in order to help us, they can be assured that every penny raised supports local people with MS and their families.

SSAFA name change
Obstructions on Pavements in
From 10 April 2013, the Dorset Branch of military charity SSAFA Forces Help changed its name to SSAFA as part of a rebrand aimed at improving awareness of the charity amongst members of the Forces community. This is particularly important at a local level where SSAFA’s teams of trained volunteers work hard to ensure that help and advice are always close at hand. Last year alone the Dorset Branch supported 410 veterans and their families in our local community. Families have always been at the heart of what SSAFA does and they have been put at the centre of the brand. The change of name is supported by a modern new logo with a three colour underline to represent the charity’s lifelong support to the Navy, Army and RAF. These changes follow a long period of consultation with volunteers and staff as well as members of the military community. SSAFA has supported our Forces and their families for more than 125 years but the work we do now is more vital than ever before. It’s really important that those who serve and those who used to serve in our Forces know that SSAFA is here for them and their families for life. To contact us please call 01202 742934 or go to www. ssafa.org.uk

A338 Fly-tipping costs taxpayers £2,000 per mile It has cost the Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) around £10,000 to clear two tonnes of rubbish dumped along the A338 Spur Road. It took DWP and Bournemouth Borough Council five nights to clear the five-mile stretch between the Ashley Heath roundabout and Blackwater junction. Among the 1.8 tonnes of rubbish were car tyres and
electrical goods, including six TVs. The DWP is now working with neighbouring councils and the Highways Agency to clean up other key routes, including the A31 and A35. Fly-tipping is illegal and costs taxpayers money. To report it in Dorset, go to http://www.dorsetforyou.com/ flytipping or call your local council.

It is not surprising that students from across Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole wish to apply to FUS after completing their Year 11, as last summer’s AS results placed the school in the top 10% of schools in the country! Students can follow a wide range of A-level courses leading to university, but there is also a Level 2 programme with excellent links to local employers and apprenticeships. This programme also allows young people to ‘top up’ their English and Maths grades and
is running ahead of the forthcoming national announcement about the ‘Technical Baccalaureate’ qualification. Once again Ferndown Upper is at the forefront of educational provision, helping young people achieve the very best, whether aiming for employment or Higher Education. Alongside these curriculum pathways, staff in the Sixth Form team look after the needs of the students and provide a rich programme of other activities and events. We believe that to be

Freedom Parade and war memorial dedication An army regiment paraded through Wimborne on Sunday, 21 April. The Rifles were exercising their freedom of Wimborne Minster, granted to them by the Mayor Cllr John Burden in 2010. The Freedom Parade started in Allenview Road car park and proceeded to the square where the mayor, by coincidence Cllr John Burden again - made a welcome speech and handed over a scroll granting the regiment with Freedom of the Town. In return, the mayor was presented with a silver bugle by the Rifles. The Rector of Wimborne Minster, the Rev’d Vanessa Herrick also welcomed a congregation to the dedication of a new war memorial plaque, commemorating Wimborne men killed on active service since 1945. The mayor and the president of Wimborne Royal British Legion unveiled the plaque honouring the people of the town who have given their lives in wars since 1945: CPO Owen WC Aubrey 20/4/1949 China; Pte Arthur G Judge, 23/4/1951 Korea; Tpr Andrew M Howarth, 18/9/2010 Afghanistan. The Wimborne chaplain to the Royal British Legion, the Rev’d Alan Davies dedicated the plaque and the memorial exhortation
was followed by a minute’s silence and a closing prayer. The Rifles returned to Allenview car park where their Bugles and Band sounded retreat with a music and marching display.

It’s time to get sporty! by Laurence Jones
O
h happy day! With the weeks of torrential rain, snow, hail and ice that plagued the county all the way into April, it seemed like the sun might never shine again. Only the hardiest and meanest of us would dare to set foot outdoors for any longer than absolutely necessary. As a result, I expect a lot of us are feeling a little sluggish and ungainly (through no fault of
your own, it has been horrible.) But the sun shines once more (at the time of writing) and with it a real chance to go outdoors and get some exercise and fresh air. There’s no reason to sit inside watching television any longer, so lift yourself out of that armchair and put down the remote! Summer is upon us and it brings a real chance to make a difference to your life and health – and sports are a
great way to keep yourself feeling fit, relieve workplace or domestic stress and just have a load of fun. Joining a new club is a proven way to keep you disciplined with your new sport and make friends along the way. mags4dorset has compiled just a few little pieces to help you get into the sporting spirit, for ages young and old. Her best friend’s husband, Nick Tanner, provided the clippers. Over £600 was raised.
Rogue traders targeted across the UK Rogue traders and pushy doorstep sellers who use fraud to con vulnerable people into paying for unnecessary or vastly overpriced work were targeted in a UK wide day of action on 24 April. Safer Neighbourhood teams and Trading Standards Officers actively spoke to any tradesperson they saw working on houses or in gardens. Crime Prevention and Design Advisor for Dorset Police said anyone found conning victims would be dealt with accordingly. The wonderful work of the John Thornton Young Achiever’s Foundation (JTYAF) continues in his memory. Founded by John’s parents Linda and Pete Thornton in 2008, the charity supports young people’s ambitions and has made 370 awards totalling over £170,000. “A legacy,” say his parents, “that John would have been proud of.” Just recently, the foundation presented awards to 10 pupils at Ferndown First School. One recipient, a talented dancer was treated to a performance of ‘The Nutcracker’ by the Moscow Ballet. A year’s membership to the Intech Science Centre and the Oryx Club at Marwell Zoo was amongst the other awards all intended to give the children a once in a lifetime opportunity to promote their interests further.

John was killed whilst on duty in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was aged 22 and came from Ferndown. The JTYAF, was set up in his name and on the 5th anniversary of his death, the charity announced the publication of John’s Afghanistan diaries in a new book entitled ‘Helmand: Diaries of FrontLine Soldiers’. With all royalties from sales of the book being split equally between the JTYAF and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust, this book will, for the first time, offer an insight into the life that soldiers lead on operational deployment through the diaries of those who serve. That none of these diaries were ever written with the intention of achieving publication makes them all the more valuable and sincere. ‘Helmand: Diaries of Front-Line Soldiers’ will be published by Osprey Publishing on 20 May 2013, and is available for pre-order at http://www. amazon.co.uk/ now.

He said, “We will never have an Ashley Heath United if they get rid of the last remaining footy ground.” Cllr Ann Warman, chairman of the allotment sub committee who is heading the investigations said, “We have a statutory obligation to look for
sites that could possibly be used for allotments. We are in the early stages of looking into this particular site and there is very little to report so far.” Research by local residents revealed that the land is designated as a village green and development into allotments is prohibited. One in Ten British Homes Could be Breaching Current Building Regulations As many as one in ten British homes could be breaching current Building Regulations, recent research suggests. The poll, carried out by LV, a major UK insurer, found significant levels of noncompliance over the past five years and a worrying lack of awareness among householders across the country. The Building Regulations are there to ensure the safety of our homes. Part P of the Building Regulations covers electrical safety, protecting homeowners from the dangers of bodged or faulty electrical work. Any work that breaches the Building Regulations is illegal and noncompliance can mean a serious fine for the homeowner. Worse still, ignoring or being unaware of noncompliant electrical work in particular could mean putting your own safety and the safety of your family at risk. Around 12,500 house fires and 750 serious injuries are caused every year in the UK by unsafe electrics in the home. To ensure compliance with the Building Regulations, certain electrical work has to be notified to your Local Authority. The possible consequences of noncompliant electrical work in your home include facing a fine of up to ÂŁ5000, having to put the work right at your own expense, and potentially having difficulties selling your home in the future. The best way to ensure that electrical work is carried out safely and legally is to hire a competent, registered electrician via the ElectricSafe Register. ElectricSafe provides a convenient search facility to help consumers find or check a safe electrician locally and also offers helpful advice on the importance of hiring one who is registered as competent. All ElectricSafe Registered electricians are regularly assessed to ensure they can work to the safety standards required by Government. To find out more, search for or check a local electrician and get the peace of mind that comes with hiring an ElectricSafe registered installer, visit: www. electricsaferegister.co.uk.

Memories wanted! In celebration of the Regent Centre’s 30th Anniversary, a request has gone out for memories of the venue
since it first opened. Perhaps you had your first kiss and a cuddle in the back row? Or
encountered your future wife or husband, as your eyes met over a chocice during an afternoon matinee. Or maybe you were there when the troops were entertained during The Second World War. You may have been the first person to cry “House” when the Regent became a Mecca Bingo Hall in the late 70s. Or maybe you were last seen being ejected for misbehaviour by Jock, the commissionaire during the 50s and 60s? If so, the Regent Centre would love to hear from you. Memories, reminiscences and life changing experiences are being collated in a memory book and memory blog to
celebrate the venue’s 30th Anniversary during the weekend of Friday 14 -16 June. Alongside these will be a special project to create memory bunting to decorate the Regent Centre for its big birthday weekend. Everyone aged from 1–101 can get involved, whether it is making your own bunting from the template supplied, or simply putting your palm print on a bunting triangle. Anyone wishing to
send in their memories can email them to memories@ regentcentre.co.uk or post in the Regent Centre Memory Box in the foyer. The Blog can be viewed at memories.regentcentre. co.uk
There will be guided tours of the Regent Centre and a tea party on 15 June 11am-3pm.

th
Annual Creative Writing Awards
This year’s mags4dorset’s Creative Writing Awards are underway “Last year was a huge success with hundreds of entries flooding in,” said editor and author Janine Pulford. “There were far more than we expected. In fact, because we had included articles and poetry, we found the competition rather unwieldy to administer. It was surprising what a lot of extra work it made in the office by adding two more categories and for this reason, we have decided to revert back to running just the Short Story awards this year.” The theme for the short story in 2013 is: ‘Stars in your eyes.’ It could be a sizzling romance, the quest for stardom or even about stargazers and their accuracy at detecting asteroids on their way to planet Earth. Let your creativity flow, but keep the story to around 1,000 words. PRIZES: 1st £150, 2nd £50, 3rd £25. The winning entries will also be published in one of our magazines and will appear on the website, where the magazines can be downloaded. The author will retain copyright of their work. RULES • The theme must be followed. • Word length is a guideline, but please keep close to it. • All content must be your own work and your entry must not have been published, won a prize anywhere else or be entered for another competition at the same time. • Entries will not be returned, so please keep a copy. • The correct fee must be submitted. • Three entries maximum per person.

HOROSCOPES BUSINESS COMMUNITY UNITY - CHRISTCHURCH FEATURE
RUSSELL GRANT’S
Monthly Horoscopes May 2013 CANCER 22 June–23 July More time for social pursuits makes early May one of the happiest times of 2013. Be sure to go out with friends as often as possible. You may even be inspired to throw a birthday party for your favourite Taurus. A close friendship takes a romantic turn on or around the 10th. It’s as if the two of you are looking at each other with new eyes. A writing project brings you great pleasure in mid-May. This is the perfect time to write a short story, memoir, or screenplay. Words will flow from you like a mighty river. Breaking a bad habit will be difficult but rewarding in the final days of May. Steer clear of a well intentioned friend who doesn’t want you to change your ways. When you fall prey to temptation, write about it in your journal. This will help you exorcise any demons that threaten to drag you down.
TAURUS 21 April–21 May Take a gentler approach with loved ones in the opening days of May. Being too abrasive can cause a fragile alliance to fall apart at the seams. You have a chance to travel, write, and explore new vistas. Don’t screw things up by pushing your greatest supporter past the brink of endurance. Showing off your artistic talent on or around the 8th will yield impressive results. There’s a good chance you will earn money from your creative endeavours. Repaying a debt will be difficult in the days surrounding the 25th. Take this opportunity to assess what you owe, and devise a plan for repaying your creditors. The sooner you face the truth of this situation, the easier you will sleep. As the month comes to a close, you’ll be tempted to take a short trip out of town. Do it; a nearby relative will be happy to see you and catch up on old times.
LEO 24 July–23 August Your star will be on the rise throughout early May. Your powerful sex appeal will open doors that were previously closed to you. What your rivals may not realise is there is more to you than physical allure. You possess tremendous creative talent, and will use it to develop luxury products and services that are incredibly successful. Even if you’re just working on a volunteer basis, you will create a respected name for yourself during this red-hot phase. Take care to always look your best this month, especially in the days surrounding the 10th, when you will be interviewed for a television show or magazine article. A romantic relationship experiences some bumps and bruises in the second half of the year. You will decide to make up or break up for good in the last days of May. Whatever choice you make, you’ll place greater emphasis on your friendships, understanding just how important platonic relationships are to your emotional health.
GEMINI 22 May–21 June You won’t get much cooperation from a bureaucratic institution in the opening days of May. Keep submitting paperwork and keep copies of everything you send. Eventually, the pencil pushers will realise you’re serious and give way to your demands. Treat this matter as an exercise in persistence. Trust your intuition around the 10th regarding a flirtation. The object of your affection returns your feelings, but is too shy to admit them. You’ll have to make the first move. Tiptoe around an authority figure at mid-month; this executive isn’t in the mood to entertain any of your bright ideas. A business or romantic partnership will undergo a critical change in the final days of May. You won’t be able to delude yourself about your partner’s shortcomings any longer. Facing the truth will be painful but therapeutic. Fortunately, a trusted friend will help heal your broken heart. There are plenty more fish in the sea.
VIRGO 24 August–23 September Don’t worry if you’re turned away from an educational or cultural organisation in the beginning of May. An influential friend will reverse the decision, helping you draw on its considerable resources. There’s no reason you should be held back by a set of stuffy, outdated rules. Besides, you’re just as talented as the other members of group; you just lack the pedigree. That will come with time and experience. By the middle of May, you’ll be one of the most respected members of the group. You might even be offered a leadership position. The closing days of May will prompt you to rearrange your household. It’s even possible you will decide to move to a new home. A neighbour or relative will help you find a more suitable living situation. You’re better off moving to a bustling city that affords plenty of cultural diversions. That way, you won’t feel cut off from the things that make life meaningful.

LIBRA 24 September–23 October Early May is sure to be a very fulfilling time, especially in the area of sex. If you’re single, you’ll meet a masterful lover at a gourmet restaurant, public garden, or fashionable store. Keep your ears open for someone with a throaty laugh. The two of you will feel an instant connection. If you’re already in a relationship, you and your lover will be spending lots more quality time together. Reduce your work schedule in favour of intimate dinners, long walks, and movie nights. A handsome inheritance, legal settlement, or insurance payment will help you buy some beautiful artwork, clothing, and furniture. Forgo fleeting fashions for elegant works that will afford a lifetime of pleasure. Distressing news about a relative’s health will arrive at the end of the month. Take this opportunity to band together with your kin, so that the patient gets optimal care. Recovery will be swift if you work together in a spirit of harmony. SCORPIO 24 October–22 November Adopt a more open minded attitude toward a business or romantic partner’s plans in early May. You’re worried about making changes at this stage, but the real danger is standing still while everybody else is moving forward. Go ahead and give your friend the green light; this will make your bond stronger than ever before. A surprising love affair, engagement, or marriage will be revealed on or around the 10th. This exciting turn of events renews your faith in true love. You might even be inspired to make a serious commitment of your own. A source of income dries up quite suddenly at the end of the month. There won’t be much money available for leisurely pursuits. Fortunately, you’ve always been very resourceful. Finding inexpensive ways to amuse yourself will be relatively easy for you. In the meantime, tell your friends you are looking for work. Who you know is more important than what you know as May draws to a close. SAGITTARIUS 23 November–21 December Work will be scarce at the beginning of May. Instead of worrying about the situation, abandon yourself to fun. Take this opportunity to meet with friends, spend more time with family, and develop creative projects. A plum assignment will arrive on or around the 10th; making you glad you took a break when you could. Your new job will involve art, music, or luxury goods. Don’t worry if you don’t have any experience in this field. Your energy and enthusiasm will make up for your lack of knowledge. Resist the urge to change your look toward the end of the month. This is not a good time to for a radical overhaul of image or style. Focus instead on developing a healthier self image. Embrace your most attractive qualities instead of despairing over your minor flaws. There’s no cosmetic in the world like confidence. Model your behaviour after an unconventional sex symbol you’ve always admired.

CAPRICORN 22 December–20 January You’ll have to choose between a lover and a friend in the earliest days of May. Don’t be so quick to cancel plans with an old chum for the sake of a hot date. Your friend has stood by you in good times and bad; it’s time to return their loyalty. A love affair or engagement will spice things up around the 10th; it will be impossible to keep your hands off your amour during this passionate time. By the middle of the month your daily life will undergo a radical change. You might be inspired to write a book or compose a song. Let your creativity run wild! An embarrassing secret could come to light in the days surrounding the 25th. Be careful about whom you trust with personal information. Keep your journals under lock and key, and strengthen your computer passwords. You don’t want any sensitive emails fall into the wrong hands. AQUARIUS 21 January–19 February May gets off to an exciting start, when a vivid dream inspires a creative project. You’ll get lots of favourable publicity for your work. You have a knack for finding practical applications for revolutionary ideas. An exciting family reunion will take place on or around the 10th. A birth, marriage, or graduation causes everyone to gather together in a spirit of harmony. Take this opportunity to extend an olive branch to a relative with whom you’ve been quarrelling. This is your big chance to put all of your quarrels to rest. Mid-May will be a tremendously romantic time for you. If you’re single, you will meet someone special at a book club, writing class, or debate society. If you are already in a relationship, take up a hobby with your amour. Having a shared interest will reignite your passion for each other. Your social circle experiences some upheaval toward the end of May, when one of your friends moves away. PISCES 20 February–20 March Don’t contradict an expert at the beginning of May. Although their methods seem antiquated and silly, there is actually merit to these ways. Put your scepticism on hold and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Going on a short trip for pleasure will be unexpectedly romantic around the 10th. If you’re single, you’ll meet someone special at a garden, gourmet restaurant, or art supply store. If you’re already in a relationship, your amour will surprise you with a beautiful piece of jewellery. Spend more time at home throughout the middle of May. Focusing on your family will ease some of your restless energy. The final days of the month will be stressful. It will feel as if everyone is blaming you for things beyond your control. Be ready to defend yourself. The more documentation you have of how you’ve dealt with this problem, the better off you’ll be. If you’re released from a position, take heart. This will give you more time for the creative projects you’ve been longing to launch.

ARIES 21 March–20 April Be careful of overspending in early May; if you’ve not got enough ready cash then this would be a good time to negotiate a pay rise or find a better paid job. Pouring your energy into a project that is near and dear to your heart will have an unexpected payback for you. It’s not something you expected or even looked for, but it will certainly help your future prospect and may very well have unanticipated consequences for your challenging financial position. As the month matures so you will learn to see the openings and opportunities that seem to be invisible for so many people around you. So that’s the time to launch a personal crusade, put your innermost feelings into words or take an unusual and unorthodox approach to someone who has been a thorn in your flesh for far too long. The end of May brings a slight setback but because you’re thinking positively you will see this as just another great opportunity!

Crazy Car Questions

by Stephen Turvil
Volkswagen Up! Government cuts have forced James Bond to scrap his Aston Martin DB5 – so what should he replace it with? I suspect the secret agent – who now favours low-cost city cars would sell his last shot of Vodka Martini for the Volkswagen up! Why? Because the entry-level Take up! three-door trim only costs £8,095 and is fantastic (just ask Q). Strengths include the sure-footed chassis, nicely weighted steering, and comfortable ride, which make chasing baddies a pleasure. It also has a 1.0-litre petrol engine that could propel 007 to 62mph in 14.4 seconds. Not fast, but fast enough for the class. More importantly for the cash-strapped spy, it averages 62.8mpg and manages 72.4mpg on the extra-urban cycle. These figures are impressive for the money. It can also be taxed for only £20 per-year as its emissions are lower than Bond’s morale after ditching his beloved Aston Martin. And there is more good news. The three-door up! has a respectable 251-litre cargo capacity that can be increased to 951-litres by folding the rear seats flat. It therefore has plenty of space for Bond’s fancy suits and clever gadgets. And that brings us to a potential problem. 007 loves gadgets as they help him stop baddies taking over the world and ruining everyone’s day. So, what a pity that the Take up! is basic compared to his previous cars. As such it has power steering, an immobiliser, and CD player but very little else. Bond could, however, borrow money from one of his countless girlfriends and buy the mid-spec Move up! trim. This adds electric front windows, air-conditioning, and an electronic stability program that makes cornering safer. All from £9,200. The High up! - which starts at £10,665 – also has alloy wheels, electric mirrors, and Bluetooth. All are available with three or five doors, the latter being more practical thanks to the easier rear access and slightly larger seat-down cargo capacity. But whichever trim Bond chooses it is guaranteed to make him smile like a mission to chase supermodels around a five-star hotel. After all, the Volkswagen up! is one of the best city cars on the market thanks to its rock-solid build quality, confident handling, practicality and low running costs. But Bond still pines for his old Aston Martin.
