Welcome to the Summer edition of the Allendale Magazine. I hope you’re enjoying this all-too-brief time of year. The cooler seasons drag on far too long!
2023 has been pretty good so far, here at the Allendale. We enjoyed the Coronation weekend and participated in the Big Help Out on 8th May, in the town centre, speaking to potential volunteers keen to be involved here. Read more further on in this issue.
During July, August and September we offer you a wide range of events and activities for little ones, bigger ones and the family as a whole. Theatre shows, live music, Wimborne Vintage Fair, free family films, markets and – something you don’t see so often these days – a live magic show at the start of September!
If you’ve ever thought about holding a stall at the weekly Minster Market @ the Allendale, vacancies arise from time to time – learn more within.
You’ll also find, as ever, interesting community-based and other articles, plus –drum roll – details of our 2023 Children’s Short Story Competition, on page 38. Make the most of summer, discover all that we have on, and come and say hello!

NEWS from the Allendale
New charity status
For a number of years, the Allendale Centre, Wimborne has been managed by the Wimborne & District Community Association (WDCA, reg. charity no. 277027). It is intended that from 1st July 2023 WDCA is succeeded by Allendale Community Centre (reg. charity no. 1202648). This change makes no difference to our valued customers. The Centre is still in the same place, offering the same facilities and services as before. All existing, and new, customers continue to be very welcome.
Say hello to Vince Sherry
Vincent Sherry joined the Allendale team full-time this year as our Theatre Technical Manager and Duty Officer, but this is not the start of Vince’s connection with the Allendale Centre, only a new beginning. An experienced Stage Manager, Vince comes from a theatrical background and has been a regular part of the Allendale’s volunteer tech crew since 2008, often working alongside his parents, uncle and brother.
He trained as an actor before serving in the Royal Air Force, and has worked on professional and amateur stage productions across the country, both backstage and on it. Already this year he has provided tech support for the Polly Morris Band, worked on student productions at Pavilion Dance South West and performed in Broadstone’s charity production of Freezing, helping to raise £2000 for Teddy20 children’s cancer charity. For the Allendale, Vince is delighted to play an important role in developing the quality and diversity of performing arts and live music in Wimborne, supporting visiting companies with technical requirements. Come and meet him!
Wimborne Minster Folk Festival wins tourism award
We’re pleased to report that the Folk Festival was named Tourism Business Winner at the recent Wimborne Business Awards! Photo shows Brian Harries, Chair, Wimborne Minster Folk Festival, receiving the award from Wessex Optical and Wimborne BID.
NEW at the Allendale!
Always exciting when we have something new to tell you about…
High Contrast Cinema – a new, monthly event from September
High Contrast Cinema is a new film society that will provide audiences with the opportunity to see some of the very best of classic cinema returned to its home on the big screen. Using Film Noir as a starting point, the journey begins with Billy Wilder’s 1944 adaptation of James M. Cain’s Double Indemnity, a sharply cynical tale of obsession, deception and murder starring Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson. From there, over the coming months, expect to venture further into shadowy worlds of crime, passion and duplicity through a continued exploration of Film Noir and beyond.
High Contrast Cinema launches on 15th September. Reduced price Earlybird tickets available until 15th August, then standard price. Book your seat at www. theallendale.org/tickets

Jo Burt & The Lazy Farquhars, 16th September
Heritage artist Jo Burt is an English songwriter, storyteller, singer and guitar player, possibly best known for his incredible history working with musical legends such as Freddie Mercury, The Troggs and even Black Sabbath over the past 40 years.
He spent much of his early career in the late 70s and throughout the 80s and 90s touring the globe with various music icons including Jimmy Page, The Police, Elton John, Brian Setzer, Bob Geldof - and of course Freddie Mercury, Black Sabbath and ‘Godfathers of Punk’ The Troggs - and recording in some of the best studios the world had to offer. His is a unique and fascinating insight into the heady days of rock & roll, now long gone.
Jo’s songwriting style is based on his background of guitar-orientated rock, with a southern-style influence and a very English ‘Beatles-esque’ twist. To use his own terms – ‘Anglicana’ and ‘psycho-country’. The show also includes his own versions of some of the biggest hits from the artists that shaped his career.
We’re thrilled to have Jo Burt and the Lazy Farquhars at the Allendale. More information on Jo, his musical pedigree and his band can be found at www.joburt.co.uk, or watch Jo’s music videos on YouTube. Tickets www.theallendale.org/tickets, 01202 887247 or from the Allendale.

You won’t believe your eyes! The Real Magic Show appears at the Allendale
The Real Magic Show is an exciting showcase of some of the finest magic from the best magicians in the UK today - a magical experience that will simply blow your mind.
This is a truly unique show, bringing together the most talented performers on one stage. The show’s magicians deliver high impact magic time and time again in a show that’s guaranteed to wow and leave you asking, “how did they do that?”.
Due to the content of the show being of a more grown up nature, younger children can become restless and we don’t want this to taint their enjoyment (or yours) of real magic, so we gently advise that the show isn’t recommended for children under 10.
Tickets can be booked at the Allendale, on 01202 887247 or at www.theallendale.org/tickets

Jiant Jigsaw Jamboree
With thanks to Helen Kanolik
We all know that children love jigsaw puzzles. During the pandemic, many of us adults filled some of our extra spare time by doing jigsaws, and rediscovered the joy which in some cases we’d not experienced for many years. Young and old love the challenge, beauty and fiendishness of jigsaws, which the Jiant Jigsaw Jamboree on 9th August will celebrate. There will be buying opportunities, competitions and fun for everyone.
It’s partly a fund-raiser for good
causes including Safe and Sound Dorset, which supports women who are isolated and at risk, and Home Start, a local independent charity offering friendship, advice and practical support to families. It’s also to raise awareness of Soroptimist International and what local members are doing to make a difference locally, nationally and internationally.
Above all we hope it will be an afternoon of a different type of fun during the school holidays. Do come along and check it out!
Happy Dorset Day!
By Geoff Cobblestone
I know, I know; by the time you read this, Dorset Day on 1st June will have passed. Belated happy Dorset Day, or feast day of St. Wite, if you prefer. Did you fly your St. Wite’s Cross with pride? Between us, did you even know this day exists?
Who was Wite, anyway? As I understand it, she lived in west Dorset, did a great deal for the local community but was killed during a Viking raid at Charmouth, possibly around 830 AD. King Alfred the Great built a church and named it in her honour: the Church of St. Candida and Holy Cross, which houses her relics. If you’re wondering about the different names… ‘Wite’ is usually pronounced ‘Weet-a’, though I suspect it’s an early form of ‘white’ as ‘Candida’ is Latin for ‘white’. St. Wite is Dorset’s patron saint and that lovely gold, red and white flag is named after her.
Back to the modern day, specifically Dorset Day. Here in England we barely mark St. George’s Day in April. What chance is there of a single county celebrating St. Wite’s Day? But think about it - day off work, community feasting and merriment, show our pride in the county… should we all lobby Dorset/BCP Councils and our MP in good time for next year?
Don’t stall - book your place at Minster Market @ the Allendale
By Jane Sorrell
Well that’s gone quickly; we’re now halfway through our second year of the Minster Market and it continues to thrive, with new stallholders joining weekly along with our regulars drawing in the usual crowds. We asked some of the stallholders what they like about coming to the Market every week: a warm welcome, community spirit, happy and friendly atmosphere and camaraderie were some of the words that appeared regularly in their comments. Take a walk around the market on a Friday and you’ll feel the atmosphere that prevails - it’s exactly as they say. You feel welcomed, you can sense the happy environment and there’s an obvious connection between the stallholders, who all support and encourage each other.

It’s a win-win on waste
Ever get frustrated about stuff you have to just chuck away because the kerbside recycling doesn’t take it? If you haven’t discovered it already, Wimborne Win on Waste is here to help…
Set up in the town in 2017, collections on the second Saturday of the month at the Methodist Church on King Street accept a whole host of items – stopping them going to waste and raising money for good causes in the process. So, look no further for somewhere to take those printer cartridges, toothpaste tubes, biscuit wrappers or Pringle tubes. Since it started life, Wimborne Win on Waste has welcomed 295 households and removed 907kg of waste from local landfill, incineration or recycling systems. This has
Wimborne’s ‘green queen’
As part of the official Coronation celebrations in May, the King and Queen, in conjunction with Royal Voluntary Service, recognised volunteer heroes across the country who had been put forward by their local communities.
If you’re looking for environmental initiatives in Wimborne, it won’t be long before you come across Linda Bunting’s name. Over the last few years, Linda has played a key part in setting up and driving forward several of the very active community green groups in Wimborne, such as Win on Waste, Repair Café and Wilding Wimborne. She was also the inspiration behind Wimborne’s annual Green Festival, and now heads up Planet Wimborne.
No surprise then that she was nominated in the sustainability and environment category – and very exciting that she was one of 500 outstanding volunteers to be chosen as the nation’s Coronation Champions!
Describing herself as ‘amazed and delighted to be given the award’, Linda says that she’s always been passionate about wildlife and about reducing waste, so “it’s been a long-held drive to get involved in supporting initiatives that promote both. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to work with others who are like-minded and who give their time, skills and expertise to our many Planet Wimborne groups. I may be a Coronation Champion, but nothing happens in isolation, and I’m indebted to so many others who help and contribute”.
included: 21kg of milk bottle tops repurposed into low-carbon building products by Circular11; 18kg of bras to raise funds for the Against Breast Cancer charity; 16kg of pens to help fund research into childhood brain tumours via Ellie’s Fund.
Wimborne is just one of nine regular Win on Waste sessions around East Dorset, with the umbrella organisation (www.winonwaste. org) celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and pledging to raise £10,000. Business Manager Stacey Woods says, “We’re so grateful for the community’s support and the wonderful volunteer team in Wimborne. Keep up the good work!”
Upcoming collections: Saturday 8 July and Saturday 9 September (no collection in August).
Opening celebration
Wimborne Community Garden was officially opened on April 30th by Mayor Carol Butter. The afternoon celebrations were a huge success, with over 200 people exploring the garden and sharing in the excitement of this developing project.
Save the Date
Planet Wimborne Green Festival is back in town from 14th - 21st October with a week of eco-themed events and activities. Don’t miss it!

Meet the new Mayor of Wimborne
By Sue Barber
Cllr. Diann March was announced as the new Mayor of Wimborne Minster at the beginning of May this year. She takes over from Cllr. Carol Butter following her completed one year term of office.
Diann moved to Dorset in 1976, first living in Witchampton, and moved to live in the town centre of Wimborne Minster in 1980. In 1991 she was elected to become a member of Wimborne Town Council and has been elected Mayor on three previous occasions, so this will actually be her fourth term of office. Being Mayor means that you also become ‘First Citizen’ of the Town and as such, Diann will be invited to various events as well as attending Civic Walkabouts around other towns to represent Wimborne Minster. These events promote networking between Mayors to stimulate ideas for functions, community events and fund raising.
Diann has chosen Wimborne Model Town and Green Cottage Riding for the Disabled at Three Legged Cross as her charities for the year, at the latter of which she is a volunteer. She is also an active volunteer at the Allendale Centre, manning reception one morning a week and helping at the monthly Lunch Club, as well as delivering meals on behalf of the Wimborne Community Food Supply.
Diann has committed to continue with her volunteering duties alongside her busy year as Mayor of Wimborne Minster as long as dates do not clash.
Summertime itches
Thanks to Vetsmiths, Wimborne
As temperatures rise, many dogs will develop the ‘summer itch’ causing them to fall into a cycle of skin scratching and biting.
Seasonal allergies are common throughout the different seasons, although some plant material and pollen are more abundant during the summer, which is why some dogs will have sensitivities throughout the summer.
Some of the most common irritants include pollen, Ragweed, Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) and Timothy grass found in meadow habitats. If your dog loves to roll around in the grass, this could lead to some residual itchiness.
Fleas love warmer weather and flea eggs can hatch out during the spring and summer, giving them ample opportunity to snack on your pet when outdoors.
Bug bites are more common in the warmer months. These stings and bites can lead to significant itching around the area and if your dog is allergic to these critters it can cause a full allergic body reaction.
Humidity helps yeast and bacteria thrive on a dog’s skin, quickly leading to an overgrowth of microscopic invaders. Dogs will then begin to scratch and possibly bite at their skin, introducing even more bacteria to the area potentially leading to an irritating skin infection.
How you can help
• Brush your dog daily – brushing daily can help remove any allergens that are sitting on the fur, as well as stimulating the natural oil production of the skin.
• Washing off after walks – bathing, showering down, or simply wiping paws and the coat can help to keep critters and itches away. Use a pet-friendly shampoo so as to not irritate further.
• Protection from fleas and ticks – there will always be fleas and ticks present, so it’s important to ensure your dog is protected all year round.
• Chronic allergies – in these cases, it’s important to speak to your vet and get a plan in place.

Back to our roots
By Geoff Cobblestone
I expect regular readers know of my love for the English language but just lately, my heart has been tempted by a rival. Another language? Sort of. A foreign language? Well, no – far from it, really. I speak of Anglish. What on earth is Anglish? Technical jargon when you go fishing? No, no, no; let me explain. English is a Germanic language; at its core, a composite of AngloSaxon dialects brought here by settlers 1,500 years ago. When England first became a oned homeland with a oned English folk, they needed an English landspeech. All was well until those pesky Norman
French gate-crashed in 1066, bringing their own landspeech. The aristocracy, government and those in elevated circles spoke French; the ordinary folk spoke English. Inevitably, many French words and spellings infiltrated our wordbook and along with a measure of Latin and Greek, created the tung we use today.
The idea of Anglish is to strip away the loanwords from farlands and only use words of AngloSaxon root, or create new words, where necessary, using an AngloSaxon structure. It’s not a new idea but it seems to be gaining belovedness, in part thanks to online
without the support of Wimborne BID. The town will come alive with a familyfriendly programme of extraordinary artists showcasing their unique talent and skill. Wimborne residents and visitors can expect to see a diverse mix of UK and international artists –from Dorset-based twins, The Working Boys Club, to the Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band all the way from India. Inside Out Dorset promises extraordinary events in extraordinary places. As well as Wimborne, the festival will have events in Poole, Weymouth, Bere Regis and Moors Valley Country Park & Forest. Inside Out Dorset is produced by Activate Performing Arts.
resources like The Anglish Moot. I’m just a newling at it, but learning as I swot. I don’t know if I’d support a full-scale Anglish revolution, but it makes me more aware of English etymology and I may well choose Anglo-Saxon words over farlands alternatives in the forthcomingness…
Like to increase your knowhood? Go to YouTube and search for RobWords Anglish (all his short films are good, when you have the time to watch them). Then pop over to The Anglish Moot at anglish. fandom.com and you’ll soon be smoothspoken like the inborn you are!

Advice for people living in thatched homes
Thanks to Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service
After two fires involving thatched homes in the Wimborne area since the start of 2023, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding people living in such properties to take every precaution against fire.
While there is no increased risk of fire within a thatched property, the impact of a fire is far greater. Extinguishing fires within thatch is especially difficult, as the roof is designed to repel water. As such, firefighters have to physically remove the thatch to get to the source of the blaze.
Vikki Thomas, Prevention Delivery Manager, said: “In most cases, once fire is discovered in a thatched roof, it has already taken hold and the chances of firefighters being able to control it are minimal. It’s therefore vital that you do all you can to prevent fire from starting in the first place, and make sure your insurance is up-to-date, remembering to check both your contents and buildings policies.”
She added: “Most insurers have requirements to provide cover, so it’s
imperative that you do all they ask. For example, some make it part of your policy to have a garden hose on standby, or state how often spark arrestors need to be cleaned, or determine what size the flue outlet should be. If the worst does happen, firefighters will salvage as many of your possessions as they can, so be clear on where particularly valuable or sentimental items are so you can help crews to help you.”
Other top tips include:
• Get your chimney swept at least twice a year.
• Keep your chimney in good working order, for example, a bird guard prevents birds from nesting and blocking the flue.
• Only burn seasoned or kiln-dried wood, which has been stored in a dry, airy place, if you have an open fire or wood burner.

Wimborne in Bloom Coffee Morning raises over
£600
With thanks to Wimborne in Bloom Wimborne in Bloom Spring Coffee Morning returned on 20th May. It was the first to be held since 2019, the absence being due to COVID and ill health. It was held at the home of Anthony & Christine Oliver in Park Lane, Wimborne and attended by around 70 people. The lovely sunny morning enabled the event, which raised £630, to be held largely in the garden. The money raised will be used towards the cost of providing the plants in the Flower Towers and Planters around the town this summer. The new Mayor of Wimborne, Cllr. Diann March, attending as one of her first events of the new Mayoral year, drew the raffle.
Thanks were expressed to all those who supported the event, those who donated cakes, raffle prizes, items for the Bring & Buy and plants for a sales table. Thank you also to those who made generous donations as they were unable to attend.
“It was great to be able to host the event once again and to have fine weather”, said Anthony after the event.
Wimborne in Bloom’s next event is the Open Gardens Day on Sunday 25th June when 23 gardens will be open in and around the town – make a note in your diaries now!
