THE BARRINGTON MAGAZINE | ISSUE 11
CONTENTS JUN - AUG 2018
Welcome to the latest issue of our magazine. As ever, we all hope you enjoy browsing through it. Well, against expectation in the last issue (especially mine) I am still here! It has been a busy few months (dare I say hectic?) with much to do and The Barrington is going from strength to strength. As part of our ongoing development, we have welcomed some new team members. Our new Travel Manager, Walid Ashour, introduces himself and tells all in the centre spread. The big news here is that Barrington Tours has been incorporated into Prama Travel, which has been fully accredited as a travel agency. We all think that’s rather exciting. Meanwhile, focus will be on bringing in new shows to the Barrington Theatre so we are delighted that entertainments guru, Dave Fitzgerald, will be supporting the theatre team for a while. We really do have some great shows and events coming up. It might come as a surprise to some, but the introduction of ProWrestling (Fightstar) is proving rather popular, with nearly sold-out crowds! Penny’s Restaurant continues to respond to customer feedback and we have brought back the All Day Breakfast due to popular demand. Meanwhile our volunteer Pat has “pondered” again – this time on health (well, mainly food!), the home and later life. We always welcome your comments and, if you visit us, we will do our best for you!

team and are both great! Hello, my name is Jeanette and I’ve now been Penny’s Manager since February. I must tell you about our great team. Because they do a lot of work behind the scenes, you might not see them but as a team they work very hard to make sure that, when you visit us, you have a good home-cooked meal at a good price. Every meal is freshly prepared and delivered to you at your table. Come and enjoy - The All Day Breakfast is now back due to popular demand. Our team member Dee has worked in Penny’s for 19 years and has 4 children and 19 grandchildren. When Dee is not working or running around after her children or grandkids, she and her husband enjoy days out in their car. Her favourite dish on our menu is our fish pie. Meanwhile, Val has worked in Penny’s for 15 years and has 3 children. She loves animals. Favourite dish on our menu?
Scampi and chips. Lou has also been with us for 15 years and has 3 children. She loves concerts and also gives scampi and chips her vote. Margaret has been on the Penny’s scene 6 years. She loves chatting to the customers and is a regular on our Barrington Tours trips. She did the CanCan in Paris on one of the trips and kept everyone entertained! Tanya has worked in Penny’s for 3 years and has 3 children. She loves her 5 dogs and her vote goes to our all day breakfast. You might call Tammy “a newcomer”! She has worked for Penny’s for the past year and loves a tuna toastie. In her spare time, she enjoys meeting up with friends. And we can’t forget Becca and Ben who work on Saturdays. As I write, they are revising hard for their exams. Good luck to them both!

showcased some of the best local musical talent on stage at the Barrington Theatre on Saturday, 21 April and literally raised the roof.
No one envisaged what would interrupt the grand final and some might say that the music took the roof off. It was in fact a lightning strike on an air conditioning unit that allowed water to pour onto the stage and overhead lighting rig. But that old adage, ‘the show must go on’ came into play and though the final was delayed by about 20 minutes and the acts continued without any stage lighting, the judges Matt Black, Helena Mace, Samantha Laurilla, Brian Oliver and Ben Bennett were able to deliberate and choose the prizewinners. Matt Black said, “Of the 11 bands, duos and solo performers who earned the right to grace the stage, Bel Evans’ voice helped her land her first prize with a highly professional performance which demonstrated huge talent in many areas – including accompaniment and original music. “Original songs were offered by the majority of the acts – which was noticed and applauded by the discerning audience. Covered tunes gave a happy balance to familiarity for the show and the styles were as diverse as the British weather – which made a bold attempt to gate-crash the evening.” He offered solid congratulations to Danny
and his team at the Barrington for safely and quickly containing the situation and saving the day – “lesser people would have given up on the evening,” Matt added. Other prizes went to five other acts for different aspects of performing and songwriting, including an audience vote which was well-supported. Matt said, “Consistently, local live musicians, poets, and actors etc prove that TV may well have had its day; live entertainment has it all.” The Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr Cathy Lugg presented the awards as follows: •
Emma Hardy (excellence award)
•
27 Days (best band)
•
Molly Poole (best vocalist)
•
Tanya Miller (audience vote)
•
Overall winner, 15-year-old Bel Evans
The night was organised by Steve Lugg and MC was Chrissyferkin Daines. Prizes included studio recording time, a photo shoot, interview and air time on the radio, vocal coaching and a gig at the ‘Potato Pants’ Festival. There was a cash prize for the audience favourite.
The Barrington takes on local theatre expertise Local entertainments consultant Dave Fitzgerald has joined us to assist the Barrington theatre team during the summer, supporting the booking and delivery of an exciting range of shows and events during the remainder of 2018. Dave, along with his business partner Scott Charlton, has a production company called “An Evening With”. In the last 18 months, they have raised more than £60,000.00 locally for various charities and causes through a number of shows. Scott and Dave will be calling on their vast network of agents and other contacts in the

entertainments industry to arrange some exciting line-ups for the Barrington in the coming months. Dave is looking forward to helping the theatre team arrange a number of events to appeal to a wide range of people - not only in Ferndown but across the Bournemouth and Poole areas too. Dave says “I have an affinity with the Barrington going back a number of years and my daughter has performed in the theatre on a number of occasions. I firmly believe there is significant potential at the venue and I look forward to working with the team.”

Meet Sue Warr, our new PramaLife Manager Sue chats with Pat Stirling.
What attracted you to PramaLife?
I have known of Prama since 1996 when I was working with Age Concern Bournemouth. Over the past five or six years I have considered Prama to be a key partner organisation in my working roles. I was contacted when a vacancy became available, and am very honoured that a role was created to focus on me using my key experiences, knowledge and contacts to further Prama’s vision.
What are your responsibilities?
Within my role at Prama, I have responsibility for two members of staff - one of whom covers Poole and one Ferndown. These managers in turn are supporting all the activities that Prama has developed in the community, including Memory Lane Groups (for people with Dementia and Memory Loss), Yap and Yarn, Carers’ Groups, Exercise Classes, Coffee Mornings, Sporting Memories, Soup Lunch, Museum Memories…. to name but a few. I see it as my mission to develop the role and Prama’s reputation while increasing our positive impact on local communities, as well as our influence locally across Dorset, then
8
nationally and internationally. I am also responsible for the development and management of outreach for clubs, group activities, support groups, events, and the Barrington Centre. I have taken on responsibility, too, for managing and developing volunteers.
What is your favourite aspect of your role? I love people. I am at my happiest when I am creating opportunities for people to help themselves, and enabling them to build strong communities; as well as providing ‘early help’ and preventative support that will address loneliness and isolation, keep people fit and active - or maybe just give them the information they need to sort out the issues in their lives.
What do you see as your biggest challenges? The biggest challenge is always to ensure that everyone knows what’s available, and that people have the chance to influence how services and support are developed.
Do you have a particular goal in mind? My immediate goal is to ensure that everyone knows what we are doing at Prama and talks to me about how we can work together to achieve better outcomes for everyone.
Where had your career taken you up to now? I have spent the last year working with Space Youth Project as the part-time Youth Participation Worker. Before this, I spent eleven years at Dorset County Council as the Service Manager for Early Help, as the Programme Manager for the Dorset Partnership for Older People Programme (POPP), and was the County lead for Dorset Safe And Independent Living (SAIL). Previously, I worked in Regeneration in Boscombe, and have also worked in Housing as a Tenant Participation Officer, at Age Concern Bournemouth as the Development and Information Manager…… before that in Training, in Community Transport, in the Civil Service, and in a hotel!

Sue Warr joins us as PramaLife Manager
What do you enjoy? How do you spend your spare time? I am a fanatical follower of Northern Soul (and have been dancing since I was 20). I spend every weekend with my partner, Simon, either at a Northern Soul event, at a Scooter Rally, or out in our Camper. Family-wise, I am 55 years old and have two grown-up sons, Jack and George. I live in Poole, was born in Bournemouth and have lived in Blackpool and London during the course of my life.

FERNDOWN U3A Ferndown U3A (University of the 3rd Age) is part of a national organisation with over 1000 groups around the country. The aims are to encourage those who are semi-retired or retired to take part in a variety of activities for enjoyment and social contact and not for qualifications or rewards. Ferndown currently has over 500 members and offers over 80 different topics and activities either weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Costs are kept to a minimum as all Group Leaders and Administrators are volunteers. The classes mostly take place in various locations around Ferndown. The range of topics varies from the Arts, Sports, Dancing, Discussion Groups, Bridge, Walks and many more. Brochures with full details can be obtained from the Barrington Office or Ferndown Library. We also arrange social events and coffee mornings with a wide variety of speakers and visits to places of interest sometimes connected to a particular group. Last year we had a very successful visit to France to experience the events leading up to D Day. This year a group will be visiting Girona to explore the history and art of the area. We also celebrated our 20th birthday in November 2017 and held an enjoyable Afternoon Cream Tea as the photo illustrates. You will find up to date information on all our Groups and news items on our website below.

A CHEERFUL CHOICE OF CHURCH
I think I know what church ‘ought’ to be. Do you? Rows of people sitting, standing and sometimes kneeling. Someone speaks. Everyone stands. We sing. Prayers are said and money is collected. More singing. When all is said and done, it’s singing and listening isn’t it? Would it offend God if I found it just a little bit boring? Or is that part of it - He looks after me and I do ‘the right thing’ by going to church? Anyway, I gave up on all that years ago. Did you? But what if church could be cheerful…young-at-heart, energetic, innovative. What about a ‘no perfect people allowed’ policy? The same eternal God but a different kind of church. On July 1st and July 29th (4pm), Sunnyhill Church are hosting a different kind of church experience at the Barrington Centre. There will be a thought-provoking talk, fun activities for kids and a decent cup of coffee. Why not give it a try?

THE BARRINGTON MAGAZINE | ISSUE 11
Barrington Films aren’t just about entertainment Sam Fowler tells us why and introduces some forthcoming cinema for Monday afternoons.
Film is much more than just something that we use to pass the time. Film is a way of communicating with people and sharing stories and history, truly a way to engage people of all ages in something which matters. Film is of special importance for the same reason all art matters – because it showcases values and beliefs of the culture within which and for which it is made. This is what makes me and so many other people passionate about it. Film gives us the opportunity to live through another person’s eyes whether it be fiction or non-fiction. HistoryMatters.com says that “Motion pictures may provide the best evidence of what it was like to walk down the streets of Paris in the 1890s, what a Japanese tea ceremony was like in the 1940s, what the World Series in 1950 looked like, or how people in factories did their work or spent a Sunday afternoon in the park.” At the Barrington, we screen a variety of films of different genres suitable for a mix of ages. Screenings take place every Monday at 2.15pm (except on Bank Holidays) in either the Conference Room or the Theatre Bar. On June 4th we are screening ‘Eat Pray Love’, a Julia Roberts film, based on Gilbert’s best-selling memoir. Ryan Murphy co-wrote and directed the film, which was a financial success, worldwide. Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) thought she had everything she wanted in life: a home, a husband and a successful career. Now newly divorced and facing a turning point, she finds that she is confused about what is important to her. Daring to step out of her comfort zone, Liz embarks on a quest of self-discovery that takes her to Italy, India and Bali. (source: Wikipedia) A
must-see for any Julia Roberts fan! On July 23rd we are screening ‘Ship of Fools’, a 1965 Stanley Kramer directed film. When an eclectic group of passengers boards a cruise ship bound for pre-war Germany, they form a microcosm of 1930s society. One passenger, a mysterious countess (Simone Signoret), is headed for a German prison camp. The charming Dr. Schumann (Oskar Werner) harbours a debilitating heart condition. Then there’s American divorcée Mary Treadwell (Vivien Leigh), who vainly attempts to outrun time itself. During their weeks at sea, the group forges bonds and rivalries, and unearths secrets. (source: Wikipedia) Finally on August 20th we are screening ‘The Shawshank Redemption’, a multiple award-nominated film, written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on the 1982 Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. It tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), who is sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for the murder of his wife and her lover, despite his claims of innocence. Over the following two decades, he befriends a fellow prisoner, contraband smuggler Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman), and becomes instrumental in a money laundering operation led by the prison warden, Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton). William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows, and James Whitmore appear in supporting roles. (source: Wikipedia) This is a must-see film which the Barrington team highly recommends viewing! We believe that film matters, that is why our films are free to come and watch, but we do ask for a small donation on the door. Enjoy the film!
Why The Little White Heart Craft Fairs work well! JESS THORNTON OF RAINBOW SCRIBBLES/BAMBOO DESIGN GIVES THE EXHIBITOR’S VIEW. As an exhibitor on many occasions at The Little White Heart Craft Fairs, I can honestly say that this is a great event in the Barrington’s calendar. We are provided with a light and airy exhibition space with a fabulous contrast of stalls displaying their handmade products. There has always been a warm, friendly welcoming atmosphere and Sam Fowler the organiser is constantly striving to make each event better than the last. The Barrington Theatre also has a lovely café where you can purchase tea and cake! There is free all day parking adjacent to the venue and easy access to bring your products to and from your table. The Little White Heart Craft Fairs are the
perfect place to come and exhibit. Take it from a regular! You can guarantee you will find a unique gift for any occasion whether it be for a friend, family member or just for yourself.
Want to take a stall? Book your place at the next event on June 23rd by emailing info@thelittlewhiteheart.com for more info. As a visitor, entry is free.

d r a o b a e m o c l e W RAVEL PramaT
Ladies and Gentlemen, friends and fellow travellers, welcome aboard Prama Travel. We ask that you fasten your seatbelts at this time and secure all baggage underneath your seat or in the overhead compartments. Get ready for an exciting ride…… it’s all change at Barrington Tours!
IN
May 2018, we received the exciting news that we are now Travel Trust Association (TTA) registered, which means we can bring you more fabulous day trips and lots more short breaks and holidays abroad. We are in the process of launching Prama Travel, which incorporates Barrington Tours, so look out for our new logo which will start to appear around the Centre.
Don’t worry, though, the Barrington Tours team (John and Sam) will remain the same, with the welcome addition of our new Travel Manager, Walid Ashour, who brings with him a long and varied career in the travel industry. We will also continue to use JFS travel as our coach provider and the ever-popular Andy as our driver, who continues to be an important part of what we offer.
Being part of TTA is great, as it is the only travel network in the UK to guarantee 100% financial protection to the consumer, ensuring total customer confidence. With over 450 members, the TTA has more than 20 years of travel industry experience, which means that it is an association our passengers can trust. We kick off our foreign trips this year with South Africa in September - an 11-day trip hosted by John
Dickson, the perfect tour guide as it’s his home country! We still have places available so why not pop in and have a chat with John for more information. It promises to be a truly once-in-a-lifetime trip! Look out for The Nile Cruise, Egypt and Morocco which will be launching later this year. The crew would like to thank you for choosing Prama Travel and hope you enjoy your holiday!
Prama gets going with new travel accolade Walid Ashour, Prama’s new Travel Manager, introduces himself and talks about the plans for Prama’s newly accredited travel agency. He is based at the Barrington Centre. I am back on track! I cannot describe how delighted I am to join the Prama community and to have been appointed Travel Manager for the unique and exciting project of Prama Travel. I would like to take this opportunity to thank CEO Steve and Operations Director Paula for entrusting me to look after the travel arrangements for their valued clients and members of the Barrington Centre. I also want to thank all the Prama staff and members who have given me such a warm welcome and made me feel like part of the family from my first day in the office. such as Thomson Holidays (TUI) and Thomas Cook. In 2011, I started working online, arranging all the travel in the UK and for UK customers. Now, I am working alongside John Dickson and Sam Fowler, the current travel team. We are looking to build on their amazing success with Barrington Tours. For those of you who have already had the pleasure, you will know that Barrington Tours has been running tailor-made tours all over the UK for some time, specifically designed to meet the needs and high standards of our customers. For those of you who have not yet enjoyed one of our trips, what are you waiting for?! Join us or give us a call and we can send you our latest day trips and short breaks brochures so that you can come along and join in the family and the fun. And now that Prama Travel is off the ground, we are looking to take you worldwide. With our membership in place with Travel Trust Association (TTA) and our T-ATOL licence, we cannot wait to create the best spiritual and historic holiday experiences to show you the world through Prama eyes. Everything we do, we do for you and so it is our customers who will ultimately decide where we go. We would like to gather your thoughts and ideas on where you would like to go and what you would like to see so that we can offer the best holiday experiences. And what’s best, we will all be travelling together as a Prama Travel group, so there will always be plenty of company and lots of laughs along the way. I am looking forward to planning our adventures together and I am sure this is just the start of many fantastic journeys.

Who will be the first to find Walid in the photo below? And tell us where he is? The first person to come into the office and point out (to Walid!) where he is, as well as confirm his location, will win a £20 travel voucher! Where will he be next time….. look out for him somewhere in the next issue!

Barrington Tours goes to Bletchley Park By contributor Freddi Colclough
5 STAR COACH TRIPS
I really enjoy my days out, as I am on my own it is nice to spend time with such a friendly team. I am so looking forward to the south Africa trip in September. – Jean The weather co-operated on our recent trip to Bletchley Park! This is always a very popular visit. Bletchley Park was the central site for British codebreakers during World War II. According to the official historian of British Intelligence, the “Ultra” intelligence produced at Bletchley shortened the war by two to four years, and that without it the outcome of the war would have been uncertain. Located in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Bletchley Park is open to the public, and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. A very interesting trip, not to be missed!
We visit Bletchley Park again on 20 September 2018.
I went along on the Longleat trip to see the festival of lights and it was a fantastic trip! Despite the cold weather everyone enjoyed themselves. I will be going on this trip again. John and the team are so friendly and helpful, I would highly recommend Barrington Tours to anyone - Samantha

Fightstar brings the
f f u t s l a ic s y h p
Ever-popular, Fightstar Pro Wrestling returned to Ferndown on May 4th and entertained an almost sold-out crowd at the Barrington Theatre. James Riley recounts the evening. The first contest saw the debuts of Symbiote and Hellmer Lo’Guennec and the young high flyer got a “roll up” victory (a kind of “pinfall” to the uninitiated!). After the bout, Hellmer attacked Symbiote and Red Eagle ran down to save his fellow student and tag team partner. The Fightstar Champion “The Original” Jay Knox made his way out to goad Red and wind the Ferndown crowd up before he gave them a gift of a picture frame with his image on it. Match two saw another debut - Miss Talia Bradstone took on the returning Rose Wilde who was accompanied by James Daniels (a manager and former MC). He interfered by distracting the referee and cost Miss Bradstone the win. In match three, Freakshow and Ricardo Borg got a victory against “The Mighty One” Kronos and Barbarian Arcadius by disqualification. The referee saw Arcadius hold a chair which Freakshow made out he was hit with, but wasn’t. The result caused tension between the titan tag team (Kronos and Arcadius) and forced the Fightstar General Manager to call for a match between the two for July 14th. He also made the audience aware that it would be a Number One Contender’s match to the Fightstar Championship.
to Ferndown
The Number One Contenders’ match, for the winner to face the Fightstar Pro wrestling champion in July, was between Mr Neat Charlie Biggs and Cadville. After a hard fought battle, Charlie Biggs emerged as the winner. His victory was short-lived as Freakshow and Ricardo Borg attacked Mr Neat before the main event, sending a message to the new number one contender for the title. The final match of the night, always the main event, was between the defending Fightstar Champion, “The Original” Jay Knox, and the Portuguese sensation Red Eagle in a Last Man Standing match. In a match that not only took place in the ring, but also outside and on the stage (where a chair, fire extinguisher, picture frame, a light sabre plus the championship belt were used), the victory was awarded to Knox when he kicked the challenger between the legs - very much like their first encounter - and floored the Eagle. Red was unable to reach his feet by the count of 10. After the match, Freakshow and Ricardo returned to the ring and attacked Red Eagle at the order of “The Original” (yes, their second attack of the night then and the third attack in total!) and Mr Neat Charlie Biggs returned to save his fellow sportsman, laying waste to the champion and his team mates before entertaining the crowd to massive cheers - sending Knox a message that he is coming for the title and is ready for whatever he throws at him.
Fightstar Pro Wrestling will return to the Barrington on Saturday July 14th at 7.30pm. Doors open at 7.00pm. Kronos will then take on Arcadius in a Number One Contenders’ match.

The Barrington
Not to be missed!
Theatre
From rock and pop, to jazz and classical music, The Barrington is buzzing with an incredible music scene. Here is a snapshot of what’s coming up... book early if something takes your fancy! The Traveling Wilburys Experience – Friday 8th June 7.30pm £22.50
National touring sensation The Traveling Wilburys Experience joins us at The Barrington Theatre on 8th June. The late 1980s saw the birth of one of the most famous and memorable supergroups of all time, The Traveling Wilburys. Featuring five individual icons in their own right, this formidable team created an album that completely rocked the music industry and sold over five million copies worldwide. Pooling the considerable talents of George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, The Wilburys were a real force to be reckoned with and created a sound and style so unique, that even to this day it still sounds fresh.
A New Flame – Simply Red Tribute – Saturday 16th June 7.30pm £20.00
With more than 30 Top 40 singles and several of the best-selling albums of the last four decades to choose from, A New Flame brings you a truly memorable evening of great music. The exceptional nine-piece band recreates every slick groove and perfect melody from Mick Hucknall’s remarkable global career in an unparalleled display of authenticity and style, guaranteed to keep the audience dancing and singing all night.
Oye Santana – Friday 22nd June 8.00pm £17.00
The best Santana tribute in the world! Join us at The Barrington on 22nd June to hear the music of Carlos Santana. Close your eyes and you can’t tell the difference, said one promoter. The best tribute I’ve seen, said another. It isn’t just authenticity and musical excellence they’re talking about. It’s the passion, the excitement. With Oye Santana, every track is a fiesta, every performance is a show.
The Tulsa Time Band – Sunday 24th June 7.30pm £15.00, Concessions £12.50 The Tulsa Time Band is the first British tribute band performing the music of Don Williams throughout the UK. Don Williams released 25 studio albums; from Don Williams Volume 1 1973 to Reflections 2014. He began touring extensively throughout the UK in the late 70s after the release of the single ‘I recall A Gypsy Woman’. He officially retired in 2016. The Tulsa Time Band performs songs from Don Williams’ extensive back catalogue with the shows including live favourites such as: ‘You’re my best friend’, ‘I recall a gypsy woman’ and of course ‘Tulsa Time’. So come along and enjoy a toe-tapping evening guaranteed to put a smile on your face. P.S Our Theatre Manager Danny Cordell put the band down as one of his favourite gigs in our last issue!
Tony Waller and his Prohibition Jazz – Friday 20th July 7.30pm £11.00
Join us for an evening of 20s and 30s music featuring a 7-piece band and David Banks on vocals. We bring you music from the great bands such as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton and Kid Ory. The Roaring 20s music also features arrangements from bands such as Paul Whiteman, Duke Ellington, and Jack Hylton.
The Vocal Fusion Choir – Wednesday 1st Aug/Thursday 2nd Aug 7.30pm £8.00 Come to the Barrington Theatre on two evenings for a different musical experience - a charity concert in aid of Societi the UK Foundation Charity established to raise awareness of Kawasaki Disease, the number one cause of acquired heart disease in UK children. The choir is a fun-loving, mixed community choir based in Ferndown. ‘The singing was great, with a wide selection of music but the most memorable part of the evening was the stories straight from the heart by some members of the choir. In their own words they each described, very movingly, the enormous contribution that membership of the choir has made to the quality of their life, the companionship, support and friendship they’ve received making the future brighter and more joyful,’ said one audience member after a recent performance.
Pop-Up Bowie - Friday 3rd August 7.30pm £11.00
In early August, The Barrington will be presenting the award winning ‘Pop-Up Bowie’ - a stunning tribute to David Bowie. Pop-Up Bowie performs the greatest hits of David Bowie, from every era of ‘the guy’s’ career from the 70s through to the nineties and beyond. Frontman Paul Antony, a huge fan of Bowie, accurately portrays the charismatic performance of his hero. His vocal and visual likeness to David is remarkable. In the words of the David Bowie Official Fan Club, ‘Amazing’.
Bon Giovi – Friday 10th August 8.00pm £20.00
Bon Giovi are known as the UK’s best look-alike and sound-alike tribute to the New Jersey rockers Bon Jovi. With over eighteen years’ touring experience as a band, and nearly three times that combined from individual members, this act is without compromise one of the best tribute acts on the circuit today. ‘Without doubt the best Bon Jovi tribute out there, the attention to detail is incredible, the band recreates and captures Bon Jovi in every possible way!’ said an audience member who had enjoyed themselves enormously.

Members’
Corner
If you have ideas of what you’d like the new membership to include, drop us an email at admin@thebarrington. org, call in at the Box Office or call us on 01202 894858. We want you to feel that the membership continues to offer value and enables you to enjoy even more at The Barrington. We’ve moved this magazine along a bit lately and the team feels that
In our next issue, we hope to bring you news of our revamped membership scheme. To quote a well-known supermarket, we want to give you “more of what you love” and our ongoing developments mean that there is a growing variety of what we could put in.
it’s starting to “come of age”. What do you think? Are there things you’d like to read more about or less about? Would you like to contribute? Let us know. Trust us, the magazine may only be quarterly, but there’s a lot of work involved in putting it together! And do remember that, although it is a glossy, it is cost neutral to The Barrington.
Barrington Health Corner Ferndown resident and Barrington volunteer Pat Stirling watched all the New Year nutrition programmes (and more!) and here are her comments. It’s everywhere. There is an obesity epidemic in the UK, but what is clear is that medical opinion is very divided about how to deal with it. Do we go low carb or low fat? Do we just count calories and be more active? Haven’t we all at some point gone “on a diet”? One of the commentators on Channel 5’s “Diet Secrets” said very wisely that there is no one size fits all. If you want or need to lose weight, you have to find what works for you and what you can stick to. And another that when you “go on a diet” you are immediately programming yourself to come off it and return to your old habits - so back goes the weight after all that time of self-denial. There has to be a permanent change in the way you eat if you want to reduce, but you still need to maintain your essential nutrients. The whole idea that there are “naughty foods” is daft in my opinion. Yes, too much sugar isn’t helpful if you are at risk of Type 2 diabetes, but your brain needs carbohydrates to function well. Your liver needs fat to synthesise vital hormones and you need protein to maintain your muscle mass. Doctor Michael Moseley on the BBC found that it makes absolutely no difference whether you have your carbs in the morning or later in the day,
throwing complete doubt on what we call “morning goods”. What also caught my attention is that too much fruit isn’t the best idea. Yes, it’s natural sugar as opposed to refined additives but you get a blood sugar spike with either, which will lead to another sugar craving later. In “Britain’s Fat Fight”, Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall found an alarming amount of sugar in some fruit smoothies, just when we had all been led to believe they are a healthy option. Chef Tom Kerridge famously lost 11 stone by giving up carbs, but that isn’t for everybody. And don’t be fooled that savoury things avoid sugar - look at food labels and you’ll be amazed! As for the “five-a-day” recommendation on fruit and veg, you might be surprised to learn that the original target was ten, but it was felt by those in the know that very few people would achieve it, especially if it represented a major change in lifestyle. Whatever you do, balance yourself with a selection of both. Be aware that low fat regimes have been implicated in depressive conditions, so always talk to your doctor if you are planning to change the way you eat. Your GP can refer you to a nutritionist to help you make sensible and sustainable changes.

Barrington at home Pat Stirling looks at what it means to be tidy.
As with many of us, I have reached the age of “downsizing” where you jettison everything you no longer use and move to a smaller, more manageable property. But is what you keep actually the best thing to do? I was fooled for a long time by everything being tidy and neatly put away. Then I found loads of things that really did just sit in cupboards and drawers. Hmm. Not everyone buys in to the Chinese art of Feng Shui, but a few tricks here and there can make a real difference. If you live in a flat you can’t start moving windows and doors but you can make a difference to the way your home feels. Oddly, my nice delivery man from Waitrose who had no idea of my project said “What have you done here? Have you been spring cleaning?” No, but I had been paying attention to my surroundings. There are lots of practical things you can do with Feng Shui before you start on the fun stuff like playing with colour schemes and accent colours.
•
Seriously, get rid of everything you don’t use and thought that one day it would come in useful. It doesn’t and it just takes up space
•
Sort out your storage and make it more logical. Maybe it’s an age thing, but putting things in categories makes them easier to find. I have found the Lakeland range of caddies to be excellent - or you can head to Wilko in Victoria Road, Ferndown and look at some very reasonably priced containers
•
Get rid of clothes that don’t fit you. Yes, that was a lovely item but how long is it since you could wear it? And actually, you won’t realise how dated it’s going to look if you ever put it on again.
I have two Feng Shui handbooks and the abiding message I have taken is about choosing the wood for your furniture. Where you have limited natural light (like in a hallway) you should go for oak. I have done this twice now and it really does change the feel of things. Also, you should consider that in your entrance (whether lobby or porch), red is your “welcome” colour. I’ve done that with vases and pictures and it makes the place quite uplifting. If you have an L-shaped room, try and put furniture at an angle to take off the corner. The Japanese believe that an L is like a chopper blade cutting through your positive energies! Take it or leave it.
Members’ corner - what do you think?
LOST PROPERTY?
When you’ve sorted out all those things you don’t need, call the Prama shop in West Moors (01202 896860) and Aaron or Kate will arrange to come and get bulky stuff to put it to good use.
We’ve been holding a number of lost property items for some time at the Barrington Centre. If it is not collected by the end of June 2018 it will be sold in our Prama shops.
Venue Hire Here is a handy reminder of the facilities The Barrington has to offer. The Centre has been providing community services for more than 30 years. There is also a reasonably priced café serving home-style food from 8.30am each day and special events can be catered for in style with our retained suppliers. THE HALL has a daytime and a night-time persona - the day sees sequence and line dancing, ballroom, conferences, soft play and craft fairs to name but a few. There is a maple-sprung floor so you can be as heavy-footed as you like. For music and drama, the room is fully functioning with sound and lighting (complete with resident technicians) and an advanced performance stage. The Hall will seat 275 and accommodate 406 standing, so plenty of room for a crowd! THE BAR has full pub facilities. It is open for shows and you can preorder drinks for the show interval to save queuing. For an event, such as a coffee morning or a funeral breakfast, it will seat 30 to 40. THE STUDIO is the second room with a maple-sprung floor for dancing and can accommodate up to 50 people. THE CONFERENCE ROOM is ideal for Clubs and has full projection facilities on to the back wall. Seating up to 64 people theatre-style it can also be set up with groups of tables for up to 44 - ideal for discussion groups or pub-style quizzes. THE HAYES ROOM is particularly useful as it can be divided into two. It is often used as a dressing room for live acts as it has facilities and mirrors to accommodate the intricacies of “getting ready”. As a theatrestyle set-up, it can seat 30 to 40. As a break-out room for the theatre or a special function it can double as a bar and buffet with a horseshoe-style flow to keep things moving in and out.
Refreshing the Centre
Even if you aren’t attending an event, PENNY’S CAFE can offer you some decent coffee and good value food.
place a fresher, cleaner feel!

Fun, hard work, diverse and charitable
! s u s ’ t a h –t Terry Holbert, Chairman of Ferndown Phoenix Musical Society, talks about the company’s workings and the next production at The Barrington Theatre. For 32 years, our amateur musical society, Phoenix, has brought and is bringing Big Musical theatre shows to a small provincial theatre, for the benefit of its members and local audience at a reasonable ticket price. The company members are working in a social and learning atmosphere to experience the fun and hard work of creating wonderful entertainment from pages of script and music hired in with the licence to perform. The membership is diverse and includes all ages. We have a good number of junior members now who we hope will become adult members, ensuring the future of the society. I have often wondered how many people have ever stopped to think how a medium-sized Amateur Society can contribute to the local and surrounding area’s economy. Looking at the information before me, it’s another article for the autumn. Phoenix supports a local charity each year and this year chose PramaLife. This wonderful charity is dear to all our hearts. They have kept the Barrington Centre and Theatre open and running successfully with their rescue package and good management. Please support the charity when you see the collecting boxes and buckets at our fundraising events and shows. Our next production is My Fair Lady from Wednesday 19th to
Saturday 22nd September at The Barrington Theatre. Shows start at 7.30pm and there will be a 2.30pm matinee on the Saturday. As I write this, we have just started rehearsals. Auditions for major parts take place on 4th June. We will spend the summer working hard to bring this clever and funny musical to its production week. Please come and support us, the theatre and the charity. If you are inspired by reading this or from watching us on stage and would like to be part of Phoenix, we are always pleased to welcome new members - both acting and behind the scenes. The Support Team is very important to ensure the smooth running of the society and its productions. And, we are always looking for MEN! (A few ladies I know would say this too!). Ladies love being on stage. The few interested men are usually in several societies and can pick and choose what they take part in. There are 43 parts in My Fair Lady, many of them small, something for everyone. Just come along on a Monday evening at 7.45pm to St Mary’s Church Hall, Ferndown and sit and watch. You never know, this could be just for you!! In future copies of The Barrington Magazine, I will be able to share some amusing behind-thescenes stories and talk about The Support Team and what they do.
I hope to see you all very soon in our audience or even as a company member.

Pat’s Ponderings
O
on later life
ne of my former colleagues, a corporate psychologist, looked into life stages and apparently there comes an “age of acceptance” where most of us no longer strive to value ourselves according to our place in the working world. It becomes about “Who you are”, rather than “What you do”. When he wrote his seminal work, this age kicked in around our early to mid-sixties. It’s a time when you start to feel that you have worked hard enough to get where you are and are now quite willing to work with what you’ve achieved. Of course, since the government moved pension ages back, our expectations may have changed too. Fewer people these days head towards a specific date called “retirement”. What tends to happen is that we gradually reduce how much we work;
30
yet go on longer because the idea of doing something for ourselves (for a change!) starts to have a growing appeal – whilst we still have the energy. If we’ve planned things sensibly – and been fortunate enough to put a little away – the early days of later life can be a pleasure and a novelty. Age groups for cruises and coach holidays bear witness to this. When we are young, we think retirement (as in “not having to work anymore”) will be a dream come true. But never let anyone fool you into thinking that it’s an easy, relaxing phase of your life! My own experience was that I found the first few years to be completely full of all the things I always meant to do and all the little jobs and such that I had never got around to whilst I was working. Then a bit of guilt crept in and I tried to make sure that each day I did
Later life comes to us all if we are lucky enough, but is it what we expected? Volunteer Pat Stirling opines again.
something I considered to be of value and something for someone else. Actually, although you may still set yourself targets as time goes on, you might find that you can enjoy choosing your priorities according to how you feel – maybe it’s even down to the weather or your general mood as you start the day! If you’ve been a worker, it’s still important to keep some structure/routine in your life when you finally stop - and the project manager in me couldn’t be without a daily list; always knowing what will be the first thing I do when I
get up in the morning. There is a book called “First make your bed” which gives ideas on how to set yourself up for a positive day. Most of us like to find new activities. Organisations like U3A, plus fitness and language clubs do quite well because of this (and don’t forget that the Barrington has plenty of regular events to choose from!). Some people even find a new job or career, but often something completely different, perhaps putting hobbies into a new context. If you are blessed with good health, of course, life trundles on – but, as we
age, things start falling off at the corners and it can be a challenge to learn to adapt to illness, reducing capacity or limited mobility. Prama believes that you shouldn’t be disadvantaged by any of these. As for me, I can’t advise because I am only just learning in later life that it’s OK to ask for help. When others offer support, they do like to have something constructive to do, even if it’s just a case of having a regular chat about the ways of the world. So by all means reflect, but don’t live in the past – enjoy the moment!
Members’ corner - What do you think? How has your experience been of entering later life? How different is life now from your working life? What are the “new” things you now value? Prama runs a number of support groups if you are a “joiner”. Details through the Barrington Box Office. And don’t forget our initiative on “Ageing without children” – not all of us have children, whether by choice or circumstance, and local support groups have been set up. If you are interested in participating, just ask and we’ll be happy to help you.
